strategy for reducing the carbon footprint in the food industry sector
National TechnicalUniversity of Athens
On behalf of the Scientic and Organising Committee, I am pleased to welcome you in Athens, Greece and to the ATHENS2017 5th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management http://www.athens2017.uest.gr
As in the cases of the previous international conferences:
ATHENS 2012 (http://athens2012.uest.gr), ATHENS 2014 (http://www.athens2014.biowaste.gr), TINOS 2015 (http://www.tinos2015.uest.gr) & CYPRUS 2016 (http://www.cyprus2016.uest.gr),
the ATHENS 2017 5th International Conference aims to make a step forward in the eld of solid waste management through the promotion of innovative technologies and eective practices.
We are happy to announce that the series of our conferences keeps attract-ing the attention of the academics, private and public sector local authorities and businesses. This is demonstrated by the gradual increase in the numbers of participants, the participating countries and the
abstracts received and papers presented during the conference.
Signicant eort is made to improve the quality of the papers and keep high standards, shown by the increase of the papers nally published in the collaborating high reputation journals. At the same time, eorts are continu-ous in order to achieve high quality services for the conference participants.
The ATHENS2017 Conference aims to stimulate the interest of the scien-tic community, competent authorities of the public and private sector and inform them about the latest developments and achievements in the eld of solid waste management with special emphasis on municipal solid waste.
Biological Treatment (composting & anaerobic digestion), the treatment at central facilities, waste prevention, separation at source & recycling also constitute priority subjects of the conference agenda. The new concept of this conference is the attempt to strengthen the links with industry. Emphasis will be given to Food Industry, Circular economy, symbiosis networks, energy consumption and saving, carbon footprint and water footprint, zero-waste initiatives, marine litter, energy-land-food-water nexus.
The Conference will provide an opportunity to bring together scientists & professionals from government departments, Municipalities, private institu-tions, research & education institutions, industry, being a forum for the exchange of the most recent ideas, techniques & experiences in all areas of solid waste management.
A special Session will focus on solid waste management and the role of Local Authorities & Municipalities for taking advantage of both recyclable materials and biowaste. Last but not least, the intention of the Conference is to seek and promote networking opportunities through a session devoted to Environment-related Competitive EU Programmes.
The Conference celebrates the 25th Anniversary of LIFE, the nancial tool of the European Commission for the Environment and is organized within the LIFE FOODPRINT project (LIFE13 ENV/GR/000958) (www.foodprint.gr), aiming to identify, quantify and implement measures to reduce the carbon footprint of the food industry sector including waste management.
The Conference agenda is dense and rich, oering a considerable variety of topics presented through almost 350 presenta-tions within the twenty six dierent oral sessions and an extensive poster session throughout the conference duration at Aegli Zappiou in Athens. Also, visits will take place to waste management facilities.
We hope you will nd the ATHENS 2017 Conference useful and up to your expectations and enjoy Athens at the same time.

Conference Venue
Location of the Event – Athens
The Conference Venue will take place at Aegli Zappiou. It is located in the very centre of Athens, in the Zappeio Gardens and next to the Zappeion Megaron (the rst building designed to serve the needs of the Olympic Games). Aegli Zappiou multiplex includes the café restaurant Aegli Café, the Greek cuisine restaurant “Aegli Estiatorio”, Cine Aegli open air cinema, Aegli Garden summer bar and the events halls Olympia, Proteas, Prive. Aegli is also facing the Acropolis and the Lycabettus Hill, is right next to the Kallimarmaro Stadium and adjacent to Syntagma square and the Greek parliament.
Athens is the largest city and capital of Greece. The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) has a population of approximately 4 million over an area of 412 km2. Athens is the most important commercial and economic centre of the country and the main Greek port, Piraeus, is one of the biggest and more important of the Mediterranean. Athens international airport is well connected with the city centre with a train that runs every 30 minutes (blue line), while there is also a bus service (express bus X95 to Syntagma square). The city centre has many neoclassical buildings which are found in Plaka, Panepistimiou Avenue, Thissio Area and Monastiraki. Athens has a very long history and as expected hosts several important museums, including the National Archaeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, the Byzantine and Christian Museum and the Acropolis Museum. The city oers a range of public transportation which includes the metro and train (3 lines), tram and buses. Furthermore, taxis are relatively cheap when used within the city. The temperature in Athens during June is usually pleasant & warm ranging from 21-33oC.
