There’s nothing nicer than buying someone a unique, handcrafted gift that has been made with great thought and care. We’ve taken our commitment to supporting local suppliers to a whole new level by stocking the work of a number of talented craftsmen and women in our Luxuries department, where you’ll find a beautiful selection of gifts, cards and items for the home. If you’re looking for inspiration for Mother’s Day and Easter gifts, you’ll find lots of gorgeous ideas.

Among the items produced by local crafts people, you’ll find kitchenware and homeware, including aprons, tea towels and mugs, by Vicky Brook and The Shed; beautiful cushions by Caroline Aitken and Simply Interiors; landscape photography by David Marshall; original water colour illustrations by Mary Spink; framed water colour prints by David Smith; photography of local bird life by Michael

Ashforth; woodturning by Paddy Hall; handmade pottery and kitchenware by Pat Kay and The Old Milking Parlour; handmade soaps from The Village Soap Co.; and walking sticks, key rings and whips by Steve Kirk, which are sold in aid of Leeds Lymphoedema Service.

There’s also a lovely range of traditional children’s toys and games, as well as cards, gifts and seasonal decorations, including lots of pretty little items for Easter. Don’t forget we also sell Drewton’s vouchers and can even personalise vouchers for your occasion.

MaySaturday 25: Scarecrow Ball: To coincide with this year’s Scarecrow Festival,

when customers are encouraged to come up with their own scarecrow design

and enter it in our competition, we’re also staging our first ever Scarecrow

Ball. This will take the form of a family BBQ to tie in with National BBQ Week,

which begins on Monday 28 May, with entertainment and a raffle in aid of

local good causes. Fancy dress is a must! Tickets are priced at £30 for adults

and £15 for ten to 16 year olds. They include a three-course meal, including a

buffet-style BBQ for the main course. A limited number are available and they

must be booked in advance. Telephone us on 01430 425079 for details.

If you’d like to enter a scarecrow in the festival, you’ll need to deliver it to the

Farm Shop before Saturday 25. We’re happy to receive entries throughout the

week leading up to the event. Judging will be carried out by customers.

AprilSaturday 6 and 27: Come Dine With Me, Drewton’s-style’: Join us for an evening of fine food and the chance to meet our fantastic producers. We’ll be serving a sumptuous six-course set menu showcasing the array of local produce available to us here in Yorkshire. Customers will be given a rare opportunity to dine with our producers, who will swap tables midway through the meal so that everyone has an opportunity to chat to them. Tickets are priced at £38 per person, and include wines and beers, and these events will run alongside the usual Saturday night Supper Club. Telephone 01430 425079 to book.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up at Drewton’s:

MarchSaturday 9: Meet the Producer day: Come and meet some of the

food and drink growers and producers, and local crafts people, who

supply Drewton’s Farm Shop.

Sunday 10: Mother’s day: Why not treat Mum to breakfast, lunch or

afternoon tea? Spend £25 or more on food and drink, and Mum will

receive a free glass of fizz and some chocolate.

Monday 4 to Sunday 10: National Butcher’s week 2013: Come in and meet the friendly team in

our in-house Butcher department, who source only the highest quality meat from local farms.

They’re always happy to prepare meat to your exact requirements and offer suggestions on how

best to cook it and what to serve it with. (See our feature overleaf).

Saturday 16: St Patrick’s day: Come and celebrate with us; our popular Saturday evening Supper

Club menu will have an Irish theme this week. To book a table, call 01430 425079.

Sunday 31: Easter Sunday: Be sure to enter our Easter art competition; there are three different

age categories (up to ten years; ten to 18 years and 18 and over) and there’ll be prizes for the

winners in each. You can opt to buy a plain Easter bonnet to decorate or get creative by decorating

a picture of an egg. You simply need to return your entries to the Farm Shop no later than Friday 5

April to take part. Entries will go on display in the café area.

We are extending our Drewton’s own-brand

range. Look out for new products hitting

the shelves soon!

We’ve even produced a ‘Food Map of Yorkshire’ showing exactly where our network of around 250 farmers, growers and suppliers are based, as well as

a series of ‘story boards’ that give our customers a further insight into the provenance of the goods they’re buying.

Our local meat suppliers include John Penny, who supplies high quality beef and lamb from Yorkshire farms; Anna’s Happy Trotters, which supplies pork;

Yorkshire Game, which supplies venison and other game; Yorkshire Ducks and Geese; T. Soanes, which supplies barn chickens; Langthorne’s,

which supplies buffalo; Loose Birds, which supplies free-range chicken; V. L. Rookes, which supplies ham; and John

Wright Turkeys. Pheasant and partridge comes from The Drewton Estate. You can’t get more local than that!

For more details or for advice, telephone us on 01430 425079 or ask at the butchers’ counter.

Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton’s Farm Shop, said:

“We’re extremely proud of the fact that all of our meat comes from Yorkshire farmers and suppliers. our sausages, burgers and range of ready meals are all made on site, so customers can rest assured that if they buy from us they’ll only ever be eating the very highest quality, high welfare, locally-sourced meat.

“i think that, in response to the shocking stories we’re seeing in the news on a daily basis, people are seeking assurances about the origins of the meat they’re buying. We’ve seen a 25 per cent increase in butchery sales since the horsemeat scandal hit the headlines. I’m pleased to confirm that you certainly won’t find any nasty surprises lurking in our pies, sausages or ready meals! i think customers are aware of this and are now being much more careful about where they buy their meat from.”

We’ve seen a surge in demand for meat from our in-house Butcher department in the wake of the national scandal surrounding the discovery of horse meat in beef products on sale in some supermarkets.

All of the meat on offer here at Drewton’s Farm Shop is sourced from Yorkshire farms and is butchered in-house by John Lund, the head butcher, and his team. This meat is also used in the dishes served in the café and restaurant, and in our range of quality, homemade ready meals.

Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton’s Farm Shop, has become a well known champion of the ‘eat local’ movement and was recently asked to join the Board of the East Yorkshire Local Food Network.

Last month she addressed delegates at an annual conference organized by FARMA, which is a co-operative of farmers and producers selling their goods at a local level, and has also been asked to speak at the annual Farm Shop and Deli Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in April.

This is further recognition for Katie’s commitment to supporting Yorkshire-based food and drink producers, and encouraging consumers to think about where the produce they buy comes from.

Katie said: “I’m passionate about locally-sourced food and drink; at Drewton’s Farm Shop around 80 per cent of the goods we sell are sourced from Yorkshire-based farmers and growers. We buy from a network of more than 250 local food and drink producers.”

we’ve recently positioned a couple of picnic benches on the grassed area next to the car park for the use of customers dropping in for one of our ‘Grab ‘n’ Go’ lunch deals, or for walkers and cyclists who want to take a pit-stop and enjoy the view. the benches are for the use of customers buying food and drink from the Farm shop to take away.during the summer months, we provide a table service to customers who want to choose food and drink from the menu and dine al fresco in the courtyard area.

WE’RE SHORTLISTED FOR 4 REYTA’S!!!After scooping a series of top awards in 2012, we’ve started 2013 on a high note too, having been shortlisted in no less than four different categories in Visit Hull and East Yorkshire’s annual Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTAs).We’ve been shortlisted in the Remarkable Self-catering category for our two five-star rated luxury holiday cottages; in the Remarkable Fayre category for our commitment to championing local, seasonal food and drink; in the Remarkable Cuppa category for the quality of our afternoon tea offering; and in the Remarkable Sustainable category for our commitment to minimising the impact of our activities on the environment.Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton’s Farm Shop, said: “the business was just two years old in october, but we’ve come such a long way since we first opened. 2012 was a phenomenal year for us; we were recognised in a host of regional and national award schemes for our commitment to championing food and drink from Yorkshire-based growers and suppliers, and for the quality of the shopping, dining and self-catering facilities that we offer. “to start 2013 by being shortlisted for four different reYtA awards is terribly exciting and we’re absolutely thrilled.”The Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards aim to recognise the very best of the region’s tourism offering and the winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on 14 March at the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel. MEET THE PRODUCERWe recently held two ‘Come Dine With Me Drewton’s-style’ events, which involved some of the suppliers whose food and drink are on sale in the Farm Shop joining diners to chat to them about the provenance of their goods. A delicious six-course meal - made using their ingredients - was served to guests. We’ve become increasingly aware that our customers are keen to hear the story behind how their food is produced and want to understand its journey from farm to fork.Guests at one of our ‘Come Dine With Me’ evenings included a local group known as the ‘online critics’ circle’, which is made up of people from East Yorkshire’s business, arts and media communities. They regularly stage ‘Eat and Tweet’ events and they ‘tweeted’ throughout their dining experience, interacting with their thousands of online ‘followers’.

We received a great response to the events, with comments including…

Fiona and I really enjoyed an excellent evening in the company of Producers and the staff of Drewton’s; great food, drink and company with a passion for local produce!” Mark Ronan, headmaster of Pocklington School

Thank you for the dinner on Saturday evening. We really enjoyed it and the message certainly seems to be reaching people via the tweets!”Tom and Gill Mellor from Wold Top Brewery

Just a brief thank you to you and your staff for a lovely dinner last night, looked good and tasted excellent.” David Hider from Hider Foods.

Due to the popularity of the ‘Come Dine With Me’ events, we have a couple more dates for your diary – Saturday 6 and Saturday 27 April. Book early to avoid disappointment. Telephone us on 01430 425079.
