The One of the grandest of mountain lakes isTahoe Tahoe . Its size

,its elevation

,its great

Country depth, the splendid color and purity ofit

'

s waters and its setting among the peaks of theS ierra Range make it conspicuous among the lakesof the world . But it is not alone in its glory in thesehighlands

,shining on in solitary splendor ! it has a

hundred satell ites in the forests and canyons roundabout, and it is at once the big lake and the smallerlakes around it that make the Tahoe country . Theymake it an ideal vacation region

,easi ly accessible,

at the right elevation, varied in attractions of stream

and meadow, peak and canyon and unmatched in any

country for the serenity and comfort of its mid-summerweather and the general freedom from insect pests .

Tahoe with its great indented shore line is a worldof charm in itself

,but the hi lls and slopes adj acent hold

many surprises in the number and character of thelakes embosomed in forest and canyon

,or set in granite

cups on Wide tablelands over which once passed theplowshare of the glacier . Some of these glacial lakesare threaded l ike beads of silver on little feedingstreams! others are supplied by invisible springs , _or keptfresh and cold by veins of i ce water trickling underground from sn owy peaks

,and all are beautiful and

romantic in their surroundings .

1,

This lake belt almost encircles Tahoe, and these

shining waters in the midst of rock and forest aredelightful places to tramp to or to camp beside, placesfor a day ’s excursion or a week ’s camp fire, places tofish

,to rest

,to loaf and enj oy the piney air and the

outlook from the peaks that rise on every hand .

In the Tahoe region are a hundred streams, greatand small . Some of these , notably the Truckee, theUpper Truckee

,the American and the Yuba rivers are

famous for their beauty and their trout . Some aretorrents dropping down from the snow peaks andsupplying great cities with power and light . Someare murmuring brooks, slow-winding through grassymeadows

,but all are alive with trout and are beloved

of the angler .

Lake This splendid mountain l ake is twenty—threeTahoe miles long by about thirteen miles wide . Itsdepth near Rubicon Point approximates feet, andits elevation above the sea is feet . It lies in a depression between the summit ridges or crests of the Sierra, and here also are gathered

-the smaller glacial lakes whichconstitute the shining girdle of unmatched Tahoe . Tothe west and south there are places where the landscapeseems to be sown broadcast w ith them . They are

reminders of the Age of I ce,these cups or basins having

been scooped out of the granite by the glacial plow .

Donn er Lake. near Truckee ,see

Tahoe was first seen by the white man on February14

,1844, when John C . Fremont and a companion saw

it from a peak which they had climbed . They thoughtit one of the sources of the American River

,and the ex

plorer so marked it on his first maps . In the early fiftiesthe lake was named Bigler after a California governor

,

but it was subsequently and sensibly cal led by its Indianname

,Tahoe

,meaning ! Big Water ! or ! High Water . !

It is easi ly reached by the Southern Pacific fromTruckee

,on the Ogden Route

, and whether you comeup from the Bay region and the valleys of California

,

along the ridges and beside the canyons of the long

western slope of the S ierra, or from Nevada up theyvild gorge of the Truckee River, the j ourney isattractive because constantly in the midst of finemountain scenery .

From Truckee to the lake is fifteen miles by the narrow gauge of the Lake Tahoe Railway TransportationCompany

,which operates a daily train service from

May 15th unti l October 3 lst or later if weather condit ions permit . This short trip beside the TruckeeRiver to its outlet at the lake is most attractive .

Stopover is permitted at Truckee on both railroadand Pullman tickets

,which privilege will enable those

who desire to pleasantly break an east or westboundj ourney by a visit to this charming region .

The colors of Tahoe’s waters are sharply contrasted ,

a ring of emerald with a heart of dark blue . It ismagnificently set among mountain peaks , has everyvariety of shore line and is fed by many streams . This

gives variety for the angler, trolling from a boat!with

bait or spinner for big trout in deep water, or whippingthe tributary brooks .

There are many varieties of trout—the Rainbow,

Eastern brook, Loch Leven , and Mackinaw . TheCutthroat—the trout with a dash of scarlet on eachside of its gul let —is the one native trout common toTahoe and its waters, and the most abundant of theintroduced varieties are the Loch Leven and the Easternbrook trout .

The Lake Scores of lakes are accessible from LakeCountry Tahoe

,or reached from Truckee or

Roundabout other points on the Ogden Route .

They are shown on the map in this folder and are

distant but a few hours at most from various resortcenters . Many of them are very inviting, and willtempt you to pitch a tent for a few days while youexplore the lakes close at hand . They wil l introduce you to new fields , to new beauty, to canyons andcrystal pools set in the granite— ! tarns ! they wouldbe called in Scotland—amid rocks and pines , isolated ,and the haunt of squirrel

,grouse and deer . Information
