RE JIMMY RAY
by Herbert Kurtin
In 1935 at the age of 12, I first heard and soon became a young radio
fan of a new singing discovery who was then featured on a morning
variety-show over the local N. Y, C. station WINS. As an avid listener
and admirer I was so deeply impressed with this vocalist's rich and
smooth baritone voice and style that I attended a studio broadcast of the
program called "Jack Douglas* Relatives" to see as well as hear him in
person. Now, 33 years later in August 1968, I sat in the small, neat
waiting room of a podiatrist's office to meet once again the singer I hadidolized in my youth . . , today known as Dr. James Genovese.
At the moment of his appearance, still a dapper, slender figure with a
thin neatly- trimmed moustache framing a warm pearly smile, mymemory's image and the clear recognition of the man came into focus.
In the July 1968 issue of Record Research Frank Kelly's column "WhereAre They" carried my request for information as to the whereabouts of
Jimmy Ray, the Bluebird recording artist of the 1930's. Although myprimary aim in locating him was motivated by the above bit of personal
nostalgic history there was another more objective reason concerning myinterest in him. For I had not only wondered about what had happenedto him but whether others remembered and shared my enthusiasm for myboyhood singing idol. In any case the following brief sketch of his vocal
career may be of interest to readers.
The late Russ Columbo, who died in an accidental shooting in 1934, has
always been considered Bing Crosby's greatest rival among the nation's
male popular vocalists of the early 1930's. A year after Columbo'stragic death a young Connecticut crooner named Jimmy Ray (nee
Genovese) was being heralded as his successor. Like Columbo Jimmystarted out at an early age as a violinist (at 13 he played with the Stam-ford Symphony Orchestra) but switched to the tenor sax and the popular
field in his late teens. While playing for Wharton Ford, Ed Buchananand other local dance bands in Connecticut and at exclusive Westchester
County society clubs Jimmy's vocal talents were first discovered; and in
1934 he began as a full-time vocalist over radio station WICC in Bridge-
port, A few months later, in the fall of 1934, he became a featured
singer on WINS in New York, where he was soon heard and engaged by
the late Victor Young, then musical director and conductor of DeccaRecords for some recording work. The following year, in Sept, 1935,
on the basis of a special memorial broadcast in tribute to Columbo over
WINS, Jimmy was signed to an RCA Victor recording contract because
of "the marked similarity of the singer's voice to that of the late enter-
tainer" as reviewed by Variety.
In my opinion, however, Jimmy Ray was not merely one of the manyColumbo imitators during that period. For although his vocal style was
undoubtedly Influenced by the Columbo- Crosby school he had a special
quality of voice and' distinctive sound and phrasing of his own. Indeed,
I believe he had enormous potential as a romantic ballad singer; and
except for poor professional management Jimmy Ray should have reached
vocal stardom.
During the next few years (1936-1939) Jimmy's singing career was high-
lighted by engagements with Xavier Cugat's Orchestra at the Empire
Room of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel; with Harry Salter's Orch. at the
once- famous N. Y. C. Cocoanut Grove of the former Park Central Hotel;
many radio commercial musical shows over WEAF, WMCA & WINS; and
a series of recordings with the Old- Timers' Orch, for Bluebird Records,
By 1940 however, Jimmy had decided to make a complete break awayfrom the world of popular singing and turned to another more secure
profession.
Through the years Jimmy Ray's mellow voice haunted my memory and
my long quest to find him finally ended with a visit to his former hometown of Stamford, Conn, From his relatives still living there I learned
that Jimmy now resides in East Williston, L. I, and has a highly success-
ful practice as a podiatrist. Ironically enough for the past 28 years his
office has been located in Brooklyn, just a short subway ride from myhome.

page devoted to Negro events) of a man named Gibson, and Cleo Scphus
Gibson, possibly his wife, perhaps maiden name Cleo Sephus, who did sing
at least some blues.
Interested persons should also read article on trumpeter Henry Mason in
JAZZ JOURNAL, , Feb. I968 p. 13. Mason is quoted as having recalled
recording in Atlanta with an obscure blues singer, and the authors seem to
have no doubt that this is the record.

1927 personnel of 'Neal Montgomery's Collegiate Ramblers'was given in the Chicago DEFENDER, April 9, 192 7, p, 6. I seem to recall
that Montgomery went,, like Fletcher Henderson, to Atlanta University, but
was at leg. st s couple of years later than Henderson. Perhaps the 'college 1

1. rien). instruments were not named. Only familiar name is WaymanCarver, who played saxes and flute with Chick Webb band, and who died
not so long ago. Peter Clark MIGHT be Pete Clark, sax, who played with
several big bands.
The DEFENDER of March 30, 1929, p. 6, had a brief note that J. Neal Mont-gomery had a ten-piece orch. in Atlanta. The April 13, 1929 issue, p.
reported that J. Neal Montgormerv's orch had recorded two sides for OKeh,
both composed by Henry Mason, trombone (sic) with the band. (Actually, Masonplayed trumpet).
BILLBOARD of Aug. 17, 1929, p.. 26 reported that Montgomery's orch fromAtlanta was playing at Playland, at Rockaway Beach, N. Y. and at Atlantic

Althoug the personnel given by Mr Demeusy is from a photo and undoubtedly
from the same general period., it does not necessarily apply to the record

Lois Deppe- about the trip, and the recording session, and giving the personnel
of the band on the recording session itself. This differs in a few details fromthe one given by Demeusy, (This article must be the first detailed description

in 1927, pianist Eddie Heywood of Atlanta, father of the present-day EddieHeywood (Jr) who recorded for Commodore, was the leader of the jazz bandtouring with the Jimmie Cooper Revue. Singers Butterbeans and Susie werealso with the Revue, and Heywood and some of his men recorded some titles
with them for OKeh too. The Chicago DEFENDER of Oct. 30, 1926 p. 6 re-
ported that the Meywood band was recording for OKeh, The personnel was :

Except for the bass sax mentioned by Rust (who might after all be Alexander, doubling) the instrumentation checks with what Rust gives.
This identical personnel was also given in the Pittsburgh COURIER of Feb. 12,
1927, the band still being on tour with Jimmie Cooper's Revue. By Decem-ber, 1927, still on tour with Cooper, the band's personnel was now ;

(from Pittsburgh COURIER Dec, 17, 1927).
The MAY correspond to the personnel for the two unissued OKeh sessions
of September 1927, listed by Rust.

For the first Columbia coupling, 14086 -D, under this band name, Rustnames Bubber Miley as cornetist, but does not divulge his source. Now,from the Chicago DEFENDER of Sept. X, 1925, p. 10, we learn that

^our article on genuine folk material versus pseudo-folk was most interesting
(RR #92). Aa to the question of whether Cal Stewarts material and accent
*'Ould be considered genuine or not, may I make two observations which may
support the latter contention? The first is that Stewart waa not a native
of New England, He waa born in Virginia in 1856 on a farm which, he later
lamented , was "so poor, we had to fertilize it to make brick 1" (Source: Jim
Walsh.) Tfalsh also relates an oooesion in which Stewart went to a recording
studio and handed h written copy of a atory he intended to record, to one of
the employees of the studio. Stewart asked for the man's opinion of the
atory. Told that it wasn't aueh 7 Stewart agreed. But he said it would be
improved once he injected hia par^oaality into. The employee agreed
afterward that it was. My otlher observation is that Stewart was a very
good dialebtition. In "Uncle Josh Takes the Census, fl hef spoke both Swedish
and Irish dialects, and in "Last Day of School at Punkin Centre," hia
impression of the Gerronn oommencement apeaker was truly remarkable. The
genuine rustic would not be expected to take on many dialects and handle
them as well as Stewart did e „_jX

his more wa,eent Dot LP work and wonder if you already have Information

At age 67, Peabody is still a performing banjoist and I get to
see him occasionally In banjo sessions when he's playing in Minnesota.

ABOUT THE WORLD BROADCASTING SYSTEM. .
.
(Introduction repeated from issue B9>
Although Woild triUfeC'Ipilons, like most olhtr ratlio u.inj-
enpiionj, are npi available to Uic general public (tlicy ore
licensed for lire by, and tented to radio ilstiorn fur broadcast
purpose* onlyi, the music and cnteftalnmeurt on them certainly

In music. Through tin ft uecadci Hie World iSroideasrlng Sytwrn,
If*c, ha* presumed a cavalcade of the Fintst orchestras, vocalists,
and efilettaintrs. There are very few famous recording Artists
wlio have not recgrded for World I Over the yens tills iranscrlp-
tion company has been independently owned and has been
affiliated with Pccca lleeotds and the nedetic W, Ziv Company,
At lait tepotl, the Company is still actively producing transcrip-
tions.
This reaeatch hat been produced to reveal ilie fabulous line-
up of artists who recorded for Wot Id over a 30-yotr penod. The
listing* arc artanged in numetical si que nee, starting with
transcri prion 81/8, made in 1933. Hie project ends wuli Disc

Of Information was made Train early and recent World catalogs,
villa to radio stations subscribing to die World frog ram Service
library,' and data supplied by people who have been associated
with these transcriptions over the years. This reJeareliet shot! Id

information is requested (such ai song titles, etc.!, every effort
will be made to supply suth data, This research has been sub-
mitted and published solely for the purpose of statistics and infor-
mation.
PSEUDONYMS . ,
,
Well- known artists, under contract with commercial recording
companies, were not permitted to use their real names on early
radio transcriptions. Hi ere fore, pseudonyms have been used for
many of the early World artists. In some cases - the same
initials have been used (example: Hall Keene is Hal KcmpS, In
other situations - ihe initials are different {example: Dick
Reynolds is Will Osborne). Quite often, two or more pseudonyms
have been used fot the same artist (example: FUlph M ait in A
Reed Murray are both Rusj Morgan), Real names (where known)
follow the pseudonyms (in parenthesis and in capital letters) in
the listing.
NUMBERING SYSTEM, , .
From ihe beginning, and for many years, each song (or
medley of songs), was assigned a unit number. (These unit
number* run consecutively from #1 to #11266). Theic wetc 8
unit* to each tranicri prion (4 to each side), for example,
transcription ft 1/3 would have units 1, 2, 3, &. 4 on Side l and
&, a, % & a on Side 2, The next record in sequence (#8/185
would have units 9, 10, 11, 12 on Side 1. and 13, 14, IS, 16
on Side S. (Lengthy songs were assigned 2, 3, Of more unit
numbers, while very short pieces, such as interludes, etc. would
be assigned sub-units - example: 661 A, 661 B, 6fil C, etc,
A medley is regarded as one unit In most cases}. This number-
ing pattern (8 units to a disc) continues through transcription
#4141/4446. Beginning with #444^/4456 through H 1256/ 1 1268,
there are 10 units to each transcription (5 to a side). A change
In numbering took place after unit #1 1288, At that point the
numbering sequence was changed to begin with Disc 1.0 1, Disc
102, Disc 103, etc. Tilis numbering pattern continues' for the.
balance of thil research, (each cut marked A, B, C, D, .etc.).

LABELS AND "PRIiFLX" NUMBERS, , .
The very e.irly transcriptions contained labels widiout srnst's
names or song lilies. A catalog was used in conjunction witb the
dLsi-i to find desired material fo: bfixidtast. The labels contained
only the unit numbers plus a "prefix" number (in front of each
unit number) to indicate the general type of selection, (Fxarnple:
30O-4U. 200-53, etc,). The "'prefix" numbers were used Irom
the beginning (frl/8}, up to, and including 9iH39/$?4tT, The
"prefix" numbers ranged in hundreds from HJu> to hJ0u. The
general categories are as follows , >
.
100 - Concert and Salon
200 - Popular Dance Orchestra
300 « Populai Dance Orchestra
400 - latin American & Spanish
500 - Standard Vocal
6QQ - Standard Vocal
7 (JO - Concert and Salon
800 - Novelty Dance, Hillbilly,
SJ00 - i'Saud, Patriotic, College, and i'ipe Organ
The "prefix" numbers ate not used in this research.
Un-iltled labels gave way to titled ones in the late H*H0's,
All early discs that still remained in the "active"' library {those
which bad not been deleted or wmh-dtawri;, by tins time received
titled labels along with the new releases of the period,
VERTICAL OR LATERAL? 16" or 12"
From the beginning (l h3:H;i> until the releases of Sept. /Oct.
IUS9, all World transcriptions were originally issued as IS"
Vertical (Hill and dale). LVgi lining with Disc SOtt, I lie disci
became 16" Lateral, Any of the earliei discs (old series; up to
H\ 126 Bhand Disc Series up to 'tftuJV), which still remained in the
"active" catalog were re-nsued as Id" Lateral, Therefore, manyof me older transcriptions were iater available as Literal discs.
Beginning with Disc D-55R (Feb, /Mar, Iftil), all traiisctiplions
arc 12" LP {Mjcrogroove), The transcriptions front D-5.!>6 on
are prefixed with a "D" tot discs containing jingles, Sound effects,
etc,, and "R" for the ones containing -music. All world transcrip-
tions ate 33 1/3 rput.
WITHDRAWN OR "RESTRICTED" DISCS, . .
At least once a year, radio stations renting the World
library wet e sent a hit of discs that wetc to be removed from
their libraries and returned. An explanation of this is that the
withdrawn discs contain songs and materials which arc out-
moded and no longer are being programmed in continuity
Series. Most of these "wJthdiawn" discs were of the popular
music eategoty, which en plants why most of the early popular
transctiptions wetc short- lived, Hy contrast, much of the
Conectt. Salon, Military Hand, etc. type has remained in the
libraties down through the years,
SEVERAL NOTES CONCERNING THIS RESEARCH.
Each transcription listed Is given at least two lints - one for
eactl side. Where one line is not enough, additional indented
lines are used. The number in parenthesis hehind each irtist
indicate* the number of cuts by that artut L (A nice ley is regarded
as one cut}. This is especially helpful In cases where more than
one atlist appears on one side of a disc,
[n the case where vocalists are known (they are noi always
revealed on labels and in catalogs), they are included with the
listings. If they use a pjnudonym - this is also revealed, if known.
If only one jong of a group has a vocal it will be indicated by
"Vocal", "Voc." or "Vo. ". If there ore two or mote vocals,
it will be indicated by "Vocals",HVocs.", or "Vs.".
