Brothers and Sisters: “Everything is lawful for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is lawful for me,” but I will not let myself be dominated by anything. “Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food,” but God will do away with both the one and the other. The body, however, is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also

raise us by His power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take Christ's members and make them the members of a prostitute? Of course not! Or do you not know that anyone who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, “the two,” it says, “will become one flesh.” But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. Avoid immorality. The Lord told this parable, “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more

than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. ANNUAL KofC FAMILY PANCAKE BREAKFAST-The Father Dydyk Council Annual Family Pancake Breakfast will take place on Sunday February 22, following both the 9:30 am and 11:00 am Liturgies. THE GREAT FAST will officially begin with Forgiveness Vespers on Sunday evening, February 15, at 6 PM. On the first day of the Great Fast (Mon. Feb. 16) – fasting and strict abstinence from meat and dairy products.

PRAYERS FOR THE LIVING & THE DEPARTED – During the Great Fast, we will be praying for all the departed (SOROKOUSTY) at weekday services, and most intensely on Friday evenings and at the 8am Divine Liturgy offered on Saturdays. Prayers for the intentions of the living will be offered at all Sunday Divine Liturgies (Sat. Vigil included). Please update your “Sorokousty List of the Departed” through the parish office as soon as possible. The first Liturgy to be offered for all the deceased (with reading of names) will take place on the first “ALL-SOULS SATURDAY,” February 7th, at 8 am.

APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER GROUP – WE NEED YOU! As members of St. Josaphat Cathedral we are all part of one extended family which loves, supports and prays for one another. The Apostleship of Prayer Group is a group of parishioners which as part of their daily prayers prays for all of us that need prayer support. All parishioners are invited to join this prayer group. LENTEN MISSIONS – The Mission in Ukrainian, led by Fr. Julian Bilyj will take place on March 8-10th; and the Mission in English, led by Fr. Terry Cherwick, will take place on March 15-18. Please plan to attend!

HISTORICAL DESIGNATION – On Tuesday, January 27th, Edmonton City Council passed a motion to grant heritage designation to St. Josaphat Cathedral. The Cathedral is now a recognized heritage site and cultural landmark on both provincial and municipal levels of government. Edmonton City Council has also approved funding towards the restoration of the Cathedral in the amount of $500,000 dollars (matching contibution for $500,000 collected in fundraising), to be used for repairs

and restoration work in the next five years. An article on this topic titled Edmonton Needs New Tools to Save Past by Paula Simons appeared in the Edmonton Journal last Saturday, January 24th, 2015. Copies are available for pick-up in the south entrance vestibule.

RESTORATION WORK REQUIRED – Based on a recent architectural report assessing the condition of the Cathedral building, the following is some of the work that needs to be done:

Masonry Repair Work (deterioration of exterior masonry and cast-in-place decorative details;

Restoration of Windows (numerous wood framed windows are in poor condition);

Exterior Painting (paint on many of the building features has seriously deteriorated);

Roofing Work (after 40 years, the condition of shingles and other roofing materials have deteriorated and need replacement);

Furnace Upgrade – although not critical at this time, the furnace will eventually need to be upgraded for higher efficiency and reduced fuel costs.

Further information will be provided in the bulletin and the basement auditorium in the next few weeks, and also at our upcoming General Annual Meeting. Thank you for your contributions to the Restoration Fund!

The Observation of Great Lent THE CHURCH has specially provided the time of GREAT LENT so we can gather our thoughts, so we can focus, and so we can prepare ourselves to greet the day of Pascha (Easter). By way of Great Lent, we must try to grow in what is lacking and to fill in the blanks within our spiritual lives, which have suffered so much due to life’s messes, distractions, and laziness.

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS

1. Abstain from meat. In addition to Fridays, consider abstaining from meat two days (Wed/Fri) or even three days (Mon/Wed/Fri) a week. Some Christians abstain from meat throughout Lent, from Meatfare Sunday to Holy Pascha. In addition, it is good to choose a particular everyday or occasional thing from which to abstain during the 40 days of Lent and Holy Week, i.e. coffee, milk, cheese, eggs, alcohol, sweets, T.V., music, movies, etc.

2. Fast. To fast means to reduce our intake of food and to simplify meals, to the point that we still experience hunger. At least on Fridays, eat only once or twice per day. Replace heavy meals with a light menu: soup, salad or fruit, bread and water.

3. Read the Four Gospels. During Great Lent, read all four Gospels.

4. Refrain from superfluous meetings and activities – from all that distracts. This includes social parties with dancing. You do not need to abandon relaxation, of course, but you should choose such forms of relaxation that do not disturb

the peace in your soul. Good examples would be walks and trips to the countryside, mountains, etc.

5. Read the Prayer of Saint Ephrem everyday – preferably in a medidative fashion by which you concentrate on the meaning of the words. You should medidate mainly on one part of the prayer. For example, you could focus on the phrase “Lord and Master of my Life” or on Christ as the Alpha and Omega of your life – its purpose, love and goal. Feel this section of the prayer for at least a short moment.

6. Pray and Spend Time in Silence – In addition to the Prayer of Saint Ephrem, dedicate at least 10 minutes for further prayer, using a prayerbook, Akathist, Way of the Cross or rosary. This is a minimum, 30 minutes total would be better (15 in the morning, 15 in the evening). It is important not to miss even one day throughout Great Lent. Select a comfortable place and a comfortable position for prayer. At the end of your prayer time, sit or stand silently and attentively, as if you were listening to silence. Let the silence penetrate your heart. Conclude by praying spontaneously to God with whatever words come to you. Then, with silence in your heart, return to work, trying to preserve this ‘sound’ as long as possible.

7. Holy Eucharist – Every Sunday during Great Lent, attend the Divine Liturgy and be on time for the service. If possible, receive Holy Communion with renewed devotion twice (or three times) a week: at the Sunday Divine Liturgy and at weekday Pre-Sanctified Services.

8. Attend the Lenten Mission and Services – mark your calendar and plan to attend

the parish Lenten Mission – whether in English or Ukrainian. Also, plan to attend some of the Lenten Services offered at the parish: Vespers, Presanctified, Liturgy for the Departed, Way of the Cross, Lenten Sixth Hour, etc.

9. Do something good for others. Prayer for others – those who are suffering illness or trial, and those who have fallen asleep. Visit someone who is a shut-in, in a care facility or in hospital. Do soemething special for the church (cleaning, singing, volunteering, serving, teaching, or something else).

10. Make a Good Confession – Take the time to make a good examination of conscience. Decide to do better. Identify concretely how you will alter your lifestyle. Make a good Confession and remember to do your penance!

DEEPEN YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD by making a commitment to the following four things:

1. DAILY PRAYER. A minimum of TEN minutes per day of prayers from my prayer book, which I will read regardless of my mood.

2. HOLY SCRIPTURES. The same amount of time for the reading of the Gospels and the Holy Scriptures.

3. THE EUCHARIST. Holy Communion every Sunday, and if possible, even on some weekdays.

4. PRAYERFUL FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD. Sincere prayer or conversation with God using my own words; spontaneous prayer; meditation; taking time to sit silently in God’s Presence, at the feet of Jesus, whether at home, in church, or amidst nature.

МОЛИТВА ЗА ЖИВИХ ТА ПОМЕРШИХ – Протягом Великого Посту, молитимемося за всіх померших (сорокоусти) підчас всіх відправ у будні, та особливо в п’ятницю ввечір (6:00 веч) та в суботу рано (8:00 рано). В суботу ввечір та на всіх недільних Служб – молитва відбуватиметься за всіх парафіян та в наміренні всіх живих. 3. ПРЕСВЯТА ЄВХАРИСТІЯ. Святе Причастя щонеділі, і якщо можливо, навіть в будні.

4. СПОНТАННА РОЗМОВА З БОГОМ (в тишині). Щира розмова з Богом, своїми словами; молитовне роздумивання при ногах Ісуса – вдома, в церкві або надворі.

Пастирське послання Блаженнішого Святослава з нагоди Року пам’яті

митр. Андрея Шептицького

- Продовження з минулого тижня -

Найкращим засобом, який припиняє зневірені роздори і створює умови для позитивної праці, є національна єдність. Митрополит Шептицький бачив, що в суспільному житті українців раз у раз відтворюється їхня фатальна схильність до взаємної ворожнечі, і невтомно боровся за примноження єдності. Цим своїм словом він промовляє до нас і сьогодні:

До осягнення наших національних ідеалів треба нам єдности… Треба нам, оскільки це тільки можливе, усунути всякі роздори і все, що ділить, і всіма силами змагати до осягнення, по змозі, якнайбільшої єдности (Лист до православних архиєреїв в Україні).

Як довго не буде між нами християнської єдности, так довго й найслабший противник буде від нас сильніший (Не убий). Найбільшою небезпекою є внутрішні роздори, поборювання себе взаїмно і випливаюча з роздорів атаманщина, котра вже так дуже много причинилася до руїни і упадку усіх наших подій при першій нашій пробі побудувати Українську] Державу (Про організацію парохій і громади).

Для нас, що зовсім недавно пережили зародження української політичної нації, в якій поєдналися серця представників багатьох етнічних груп, особливо значущим буде знайти в писаннях митрополита Шептицького таку фразу, ніби списану із сьогодення:

Між вами були люди і іншої національности, які одначе з таким пожертвуванням працювали для нашого народу, що стались в повному значенні

того слова нашими найближчими й найдорожчими співробітниками у винограді Христовому (Послання до монаших Чинів і Згромаджень).

Учасникам ненасильницького протесту на Майдані не раз здавалося, що митрополит Андрей є поміж ними. Чому? Та тому, що Майдан молився. Українська Революція гідності не була б такою успішною, якби не молитва. Про це значення молитви нам треба пам’ятати і сьогодні, коли на Cході України точиться війна з російськими військовими угрупованнями. Ось чому ті з нас, хто самовіддано формував молитовний Майдан, напевно, відчують свою душевну суголосність із такими висновками Андрея Шептицького:

Ми є свідками історичних подій, які на всі часи стануть ясним доказом, чим є молитва для людства (Пастирське послання до духовенства про церковне правило та розпорядження для духовенства про обов’язок священика відмовлювати церковне правило). Все те, – що видавалося неможливе і нездійсниме, виявилось можливе, бо й найбільші перешкоди усуваються тоді, коли Бог якесь діло благословить і хоче його довести до кінця (Звернення з приводу завершення ІV Архиєпархія-льного Собору).

Таємниця такого дивовижного пророчого слова митрополита Андрея проста: його найбільше багатство було не від цього світу, бо він посідав Божу Мудрість і Божий мир. З усіх видів діяльності цього слуги Божого, його праць, молитов і повчань, мрій і страждань, заповітів і завдань, що їх він нам залишив, і сьогодні випромінює Божественна благодать. Це й визначило калібр його особи: «Велетень Свято-Юрської гори» був передусім велетнем духу.
