You’re new to the FM business…
You’re at a party…
You’re casually talking to some people you have never met before who you are hoping to tell about FM, when someone turns around to you and says,
“So tell me, what do YOU do for a living?”

Did you notice how your heart suddenly started banging so hard it made you feel faint?
Did you feel a hot flush coming on?
Did you notice that odd feeling in your stomach?

Did you notice that everyone seems to have stopped talking and are now looking at you?
Did you notice that your mouth has gone so dry your tongue has stuck to the roof of your mouth?

Do you say …
“Excuse me, I need the loo” and then leave the building!
“I am with FM Group …” and then spend the next 30 minutes doing a full-blown presentation on the company history, pay plan, product & pricing benefits, the network marketing industry, etc.

Do you say …
“I’m in MLM”, or
“I sell perfumes“, or
“I recruit people who recruit people who recruit people… and I earn money from all of them. Want to join?”
None of these do you justice and will certainly not create interest
© Stephen Bourne 2009 What Do You Do For A Living v1 1-10
What you need is a short, informative, honest and well-rehearsed response that will create interest
Your reply should be no longer than 10-15 seconds otherwise it will look like a speech!
… here are a couple of examples of what people in other non-MLM businesses might say:

If you are a carpenter that specialises in taking painstaking months or even years to restore antique pieces of furniture that have been damaged by age, fire or accident … you wouldn’t say,
“I’m a chippie”
That’s uninteresting and belittles what you actually do. You would say,
“I am a carpenter specializing in the restoration of antique pieces of furniture that have been damaged”.
That’s interesting

If you are the Personal Secretary to the billionaire owner of a giant, multinational corporation and spend your time meeting clients with your boss, organising and attending meetings around the world, arranging for reports to be commissioned … you wouldn’t say,
“I’m a gopher for a guy in the city”
That’s uninteresting and belittles what you actually do. You would say something like,
“I am the Personal Secretary to the head of a multinational corporation based in London and my job is to ensure the smooth running of its operations”.
That’s interesting

Going back to the basics of Network Marketing, it is important to remember that this industry is NOT all about `you’
… it’s all about `your prospective new team members’ and getting to know them

When meeting new people … be the first to ask questions such as:
“How do you know the host and hostess?”
“Have you known them long?”
““WHAT WORK DO YOU DO?”WHAT WORK DO YOU DO?”
“How long have you been doing that?”
“Sounds interesting… do you enjoy it?”
© Stephen Bourne 2009 What Do You Do For A Living v1 1-10
“Did you always want to do that when you were younger?”
“Are you married?”
“Do you have kids?”
“How old are they?”
DO NOT make it an interrogation … just show interest in them

You should now have built a rough picture of that person … enough to be able to help you answer effectively when that person asks you,
“So tell me, what do YOU do for a living?”

What you need is a short, informative, honest and well-rehearsed response that will make the other person ask at least one question
Your reply should be no longer than 10-15 seconds otherwise it will look like a speech
As I have already said …
So, what DO you do for a living?

The following is a ONLY A GUIDE of what to say …

IMPORTANT RULESIMPORTANT RULES
Think about the important KEYWORDS that you want to use:
`I SHOW’ does not imply that you need to be a teacher
The part shown in RED is targeted directly at that person
You have used THEIR NAME – which makes it personal

IMPORTANT RULESIMPORTANT RULES
Think about the important KEYWORDS that you want to use:
You used the word `ENJOYABLY’ – most people do not enjoy their work
You used the expression `EARN A LOT MORE MONEY BY WORKING LESS HOURS’ – this is most people’s dream deal!

Always end up with a question
“ - do you think this might be of interest to you?”
It shows you immediately if there could be some interest

they ask you FIRST …

Short statements with KEYWORDS are always the best

Find something to say that you feel comfortable saying – and be imaginative!
Always add a question at the end of your replies
