William Dodd, a former factory worker, describes life for factory workers in 1841

It is said that children are so cruelly beaten by the spinners or overseers that their limbs become distorted and they grow up cripples. It is also said they are forced to work for up to 15 hours per day.

At the Bradford factory of Mr John Wood, workers looked healthy. The hours of labour are not more than eleven each day. A surgeon is provided by the firm. During the time they are off work, their wages are sent to them, as if they had been at work
