We are excited to launch our 2017-2018 season ofBach+, co-sponsored by St. Anne's Episcopal Churchand Live Arts Maryland. This year's program celebratestwo anniversaries-the 500th anniversary of the LutheranReformation and the 325th anniversary of St. Anne'sParish-with a "musical offering" that features J.S. Bach'sB Minor Mass, the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), TheArt of Fugue, Musical Offering, and also includesHandel's immortal Messiah. The Bach+ season launched on September 24, with thefirst in a series of eight hour-long Organ Vespers that aredesigned to show off St. Anne's newly-refurbishedFreiburger organ as well as the organ works of J.S.Bach. Throughout his entire career, Bach was regardedas the "prince of all clavier players" (as a colleague oncecalled him). This first Organ Vespers program featuressome of the virtuosic "foundational" works that Bachwrote before his years in Leipzig. The program showshow Bach incorporated the styles of the previousgeneration of German masters along with Italian andFrench styles into his compositions. Works, performedby organist Larry Molinaro, include chorales from theOrgelbchlein as well as the famous Passacaglia andFugue in C minor, BWV 582. KAIROS Prison Ministry

The Kairos Prison Ministry needs your support. Thisecumenical ministry helps men and women who areincarcerated and their families. It has a remarkablerecord of transforming lives, reducing violence, andhelping those released back into society.

St. Anne's Church helped launch this ministry inMaryland. We have supported this ministry for over adecade. KAIROS is now in seven prisons in Marylandand more than 300 worldwide.

The program is based on the Cursillo model which startswith a three-day weekend "short course," and includesmonthly reunions and weekly prayer and sharemeetings.

The most immediate need is for men to volunteer in thenext short course in the men's prison, JessupCorrectional Institution. The training dates are Saturdays(October 7, 21, November 11) and the weekend(November 16-19). If you can attend on these dates itwould be very helpful. We have 30 volunteers and needten more.

Men volunteer in men's prison and women in thewomen's prison in Jessup. The next women's weekendis November 2 and the team is already forming. Moreinformation is available at www.marylandkairos.org

There are multiple ways you can help in addition tovolunteering inside the prisons. Prayer vigils occuraround the clock during weekends and we are alwayslooking for persons to volunteer to pray. We write lettersof support for inmates who are attending weekends.Over the years, St. Anne's parishioners have writtenmore than one thousand letters. We offer weekendcourses outside prison for mothers, daughters and wivesof men who are incarcerated. We offer courses foryouths called "Torch." We have also initiated a re-entryprogram in Maryland.

An invitation to meet twowonderful people from Kasese,Uganda at St. Anne's ParishHall, Sunday, October 8, 3:30-5:30 PM, 199 Duke ofGloucester, Annapolis, MD.

Scott Gregory and MikeCreighton are on the U.S. Boardthat supports education

sponsorships for orphans and a clinic in a ruralsouthwest part of Uganda that borders Rwanda and theCongo. Two Ugandans from that wonderful work,Veronica Ndagano and Mbababazi Aidaloi, are in theU.S. to attend the U.S. Board Meeting and will be visitingSt. Anne's.

The mission in Uganda enables nearly 300 orphanchildren, who otherwise would not be able, go to school. Their clinic addresses HIV/AIDS, malaria and generalcare. The clinic sees over 2,000 patients and has over300 babies safely born there each year.

This is an opportunity to meet these wonderful people, hear their story, and ask questions. The U.S. Board iscalled CHERA (Community Health and Education inRural Africa) and you can learn much more at:cherahealth.org, or visit them on Facebook. Scott andMike deeply hope you can come.

Light House Food Pantry

Thank you everyone who has donated to the Light Housefood pantry food drive so far. During September, wepassed out 164 Graul's grocery bags with a St. Anne'slogo pasted on the side. As of Sunday, September 24,we had taken 93 bags of food to the shelter from thechurch and parish house. Eight individuals told me theyhad taken bags directly to the shelter for a total of 20bags. In addition, someone took 150 pounds of food tothe shelter which I figure would be equal to about 21bags. So, we have contributed about 134 bags of food. Also, $175 has been donated which we will use duringthe fall to purchase food when needed.

Food is always needed. If you have not had a chance topurchase food for the Light House, you can bring indonations to the church or take them directly to theshelter any time.

The food donated is not for the residents of the LightHouse but for our neighbors right here in Annapolis whohave homes but lack the funds to purchase food.

Individuals may go to the Light House once a month andreceive 2 bags of food to make 3 meals a day for 3 daysplus a few extra staples. For many, this is a one-timehelping hand in a time of need. Others come more oftento get them through until payday.

A Year of Getting to Know God through the Bible

A new series has begun at our Sunday 5:30 PM service: A Year of Getting to Know God through the Bible. Over

the course of the next year, we'll base the music, readings, prayers, and message of our service on thestory of the Bible and the God revealed there. Thismeans that in thirty minutes a week you can get to knowGod and the Bible better. In the course of a year, you willcome away with an understanding of who God is, whatthe Bible really says, and why the Bible is so important tous as a source for understanding who we are too. Inaddition to the Sunday evening 30-minute service, we'llbe building a webpage that contains additional resourcesfor deeper exploration and understanding. We'll take some breaks here and there, for example, when Amy and Joe are on vacation, or when some othercelebration takes precedence, and don't worry, if youcan't come every Sunday evening, you won't feel lostwhen you do come. But making the commitment toattend regularly is one way to learn and grow over time. If you already love our 5:30 Sunday evening service, ourformat and style isn't changing at all-you'll just notice asustained theme over time-a crucial, exciting, enriching,life-giving theme. We began on March 5-the first Sunday of Lent. Tryingout this service and a Year of Getting to Know Godthrough the Bible will make a wonderful Lentendiscipline. We hope to see you there!
