Through the William Orovan Leadership Fund, we were especially honoured to be able to invite Mr. Gerald Huesch, Chairman and CEO of the Global Leadership School to McMaster University on March 7 and 8, 2013 for a 2 day workshop on Evidence-Based Leadership. The audience was fully engaged in a myriad of team building exercises and Mr. Huesch offered key insights into leadership tools, communication skills and emotional intelligence.

Order of Ontario

On January 22nd, 2014, Dr. Mohit Bhandari was invested with the Order of Ontario for his work on intimate partner violence prevention by Lieutenant-Governor David Onley.

The Order of Ontario is the province's highest official honour which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a high level of individual excellence and achievement in any field benefiting the people of Ontario or anywhere in the world.

The Prevalence of Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence Surgical Evaluation (PRAISE) study led by Dr. Bhandari reported that one in six women that visited a fracture clinic had been a victim of domestic violence and one in fifty were there as a direct result of that violence.

In response, Dr. Bhandari and his team are spearheading the development of an Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) tool kit for surgeons with the help of the Public Health Agency of Canada. This toolkit will provide surgeons with the tools they need to help women who are victims of abuse by referring them to resources and support programs.

When asked what this honour meant to him, Dr. Bhandari stated, “I'm deeply touched by this honour, particularly because it honours those Ontarians who have been recognized for their contributions to the lives of citizens. The fundamental tenet of the work we have been doing in orthopaedic surgery over the past decade had its vision in helping people and making their lives better. For me, induction into the Order of Ontario is a profound recognition that our research may have transformed the lives of men and women suffering from injuries.”

Dr. Michelle Ghert was awarded an Innovation grant from the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Prophylactic antibiotic regimens in tumour surgery (PARITY) trial is designed to compare two different antibiotic regimens on infection rates in patients who receive a lower limb prosthetic as a result of a lower extremity bone tumor.

Dr. Mohit Bhandari received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant.

The Hip Fracture Evaluation with Alternatives of Total Hip Arthroplasty Versus Hemi-Arthroplasty (HEALTH) trial compares revision surgery rates in patients over 50 years of age who are treated with either total hip arthroplasty or hemi-arthroplasty.

On March 21, 2014, the McMaster Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Education Program was awarded the PARO Residency Program Excellence Award. This award recognizes residency programs that consistenly offer exceptionally positive and rewarding experience to their residents, while producing physicians who are expertly trained to deal with the challenges in their upcoming careers.

The orthopaedic residency program continues to grow in the realms of education and research. Our involvement with the surgical scientist program continues to thrive and we have had a number of residents see it through to completion, obtaining their graduate degree and valuable research experience. Our residents continue to present their research at national and international venues with thanks to our faculty for their support. This year we were the first orthopaedic program in Canada to assess the use of the computer based assessment of personal characteristics (CASPer) for this years CARMs residency match. This tool was implemented by McMaster’s medical school for the preselection of applicants for interview. Over 200 applicants completed this assessment both nationally and internationally.

As well, we have had a number of residents building ties with international work in India, Uganda and Guyana representing MacOrtho abroad.

We wish good luck to our graduating residents as they move into their fellowships and practice and look forward to getting to know our excellent group of incoming PGY1’s. The cycle continues, thank-you to the faculty and alumni for their continued support of the program as we continue to train the orthopaedic surgeons of tomorrow.

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University has graduated over 190 surgeons since it's inaugural class in 1982. The MacOrtho Society was founded in 2011 with the goal of promoting alumni relationships and enhancing the Division by creating a culture of collaboration. We, at MacOrtho, continuously strive to improve the lives of patients with musculoskeletal disease through the paradigm of evidence-based orthopaedics.
