Souks and markets have been around in the Middle East for centuries. Most major souks generally started as informal meeting areas for merchants in open places, slowly developing into more formal markets.

Sharjah city has several interesting traditional souks overflowing with individual stalls. The famous souks of the region include the Central Souk, known locally as the Blue souk, Sharjah Gold Centre, Souk Al Arsah, Souk Al Bahar and Souk Saqer. These bazaars provide a wide variety of goods and a tour around the area offers a great opportunity to study the ethnic culture of an Arabian market. These markets are preserved and renovated carefully by the authorities of Sharjah to retain their long-established charm and yet encompass the comforts of modern life.

Souks in Sharjah

Souk Al Arsah

Souk Al Arsah is one of the oldest and most popular souks in the UAE. The souk is located between Sharjah Heritage Museum and Ibrahim Al Midfa house. The old souk dates back more than half a century and was originally a well-known station for commercial ships and boats from Persia, India and the Arabian Peninsula. The souk, which was reopened in 1995, comprises of some 87 shops of varying sizes.

These shops stock a varied array of items including brass, silver and handicrafts, as well as jewellery, local garments, medical herbs, traditional articles made of wood and other collections made of ivory. There are also the traditional weapons available such as swords and daggers. In addition to this, coins and small samples of the ships and boats used in the past are also on display.

Souk Al Arsah, Sharjah

Central Souk

The Central Souk is one of the best-loved and largest souks in the UAE. Adding to the beauty and magnificence of the market it is located in the heart of Sharjah city in the Khalid Lagoon region.

The Souk consists of two buildings housing approximately 600 shops occupying two wings that are connected by bridges. The market is a fascinating place to explore. One wing is dedicated to goods, gifts and electronics, while the other is where gold, gems and jewellery shops can be found.

Bargains can be found in the exotic shops on the upstairs balconies, specialising in carpets from Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey, Kashmiri pashminas, and silver Bedouin jewellery from Oman, Yemen, Afghanistan and India.

The Sharjah Gold Centre is another popular place in Al Wahda Street with a vast collection of designs and craftsmanship available. It houses 44 gold jewellery shops, which include both locally owned stores and internationally famous store brands. Regardless of which store you choose to shop in Sharjah’s Gold Centre, the prices are very reasonable and they meet different budgets. Copious racks of gold hang inside shop windows, luring passers-by to convert savings into solid gold.

Central Souk, Sharjah

Open since 1979, the legendary Central Souk is the most famous souk in Sharjah and is a definite destination for all shoppers.

One of the main attractions that attract visitors to the emirate of Sharjah is the variety of souks in the city centre, such as fish market, fruit and vegetable market, sapling and flowers market, as well as birds and livestock market in Al Jubail area.

Fish Market

This market is the first destination in the region for different kinds of fresh fish, and all other sea species that fishermen bring to shore at dawn. The market includes 44 shops selling fish and 9 stores to get it cut and cleaned.

Birds & Livestock Market

This market is particularly specialized in the sale of pet birds, hawks, and consists of fixed buildings, internally divided into 42 stores, in addition to 18 other stores to sell fresh poultry. It also includes 52 shops selling live sheep and cattle.

Sapling & Flowers Market

Of the most famous markets frequently visited by locals and residents. The area of this market, which is located directly opposite the fish market, is 3400 square meters, and consists of 11 simple wooden booths.

Fruit & Vegetable Market

Featuring unique Islamic architecture style which quickly draws the attention of visitors. Consisting of 118 independent shops, in front of each of them a platform to showcase local fruit and vegetables imported from all over the world.

Sharjah City Centre

Sharjah City Centre is a well known shopping and entertainment centre. It is located in the heart of Sharjah, along Al Wahda Street. The centre houses a number of garment, perfume, cosmetic and jewellery stores with both local and international brands, and a food court which can seat 300 people.

In addition, Magic Planet is a unique entertainment complex designed for children up to nine years and makes the centre an ideal destination for families and children.
