Shakespeare’s Life
Shakespeare was born on April
23rd, 1564 in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England.
His parents were John Shakespeare, who was a leather merchant, and Mary Arden, who was a landed local heiress.
He had seven other siblings: Joan, Gilbert, Richard, Edmund, Anne, and Margaret.
He married Anne Hathaway on November 28th, 1582.
Family
One of Shakespeare’s famous
works, this tragedy was written in the 1590s.
The story of Romeo & Juliet follows 13 year-old Juliet of Capulet and Romeo of Montague as they try to form a relationship while their families drive them apart.
This play reflects the Renaissance because wealthy women (i.e. Juliet) during the Renaissance were expected to marry young.
Romeo and Juliet
Julius Caesar was believed to be
written in 1599. This play follows the 44 BC
conspiracy against the Roman dictator, Julius Caesar, his assassination, and the triumph of the conspirators in the Battle of Philippi.
The play contains many elements of the Elizabethan period of the Renaissance. (The characters mention hats and doublets, which did not exist in ancient Rome.)
Julius Caesar
Another famous tragedy, the
play was written in mid-1599. The story follows Prince Hamlet
as he tries to enact revenge on his uncle Claudius for murdering his father, King Hamlet.
The play reflects the Renaissance because Hamlet is a protestant, a major branch of Christianity.
Hamlet
Shakespeare was a very
modest actor, and a excellent writer.
He was also a very talented playwright, as seen in his plays. (Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, Henry IV)
Talents
Not much is known about Shakespeare’s
religious beliefs, but since he was born under the rule of Elizabeth I, (She was Protestant and outlawed Christianity) he was believed to be Protestant.
Beliefs
Shakespeare was very
interested in sports and music at a young age.
He also liked reading and fishing.
