The audience is new and existing estimators and others who are involved with Ellipse estimating. This document covers estimating for major projects, not estimating for distribution work.

1 SET UP WORK PLANNER 1.1 Introduction to Work Planner Work Planner is used to set dates in an Estimate, quicker and easier than changing the dates using Ellipse Estimating. That is because Work Planner can “bulk update” the dates for all items.

Shared Database Work Planner is an interface to the estimate database in Ellipse. Work Planner and the Ellipse Estimating module both access the same Ellipse database.

That means you can change the estimate data using either program. But, close the Estimate in Ellipse before changing and saving. Then when you open the Estimate, the dates will be updated.

Important: Close the estimate in Ellipse before changing dates using Work Planner.

If you leave the Estimate open while changing dates in Work Planner, the changes will get made to the Ellipse database, but won’t show in the open Estimate. That is because your local Estimate copy has not been updated until it is closed then opened again (refreshed).

Work Planner is a Program in Ellipse. It is also called Mincom Work Planner or Ventyx Work Planner. These are company names that are owned by ABB, who also owns Ellipse.



1.2 Logon to Work Planner

Work Planner is a Program in Ellipse. It is also called Mincom Work Planner or Ventyx Work Planner. These are company names that are owned by ABB, who also owns Ellipse. Versions vary in Prod, Test and UAT. Mincom will become Ventex when the software version is updated.

Type in your PC Login and Password, then press Login.

UAT or TEST Click to launch Work Planner in UAT or TEST: http://appintra/info/.

The login page appears. Click “UAT” or “TEST”.

After Logging in – select Estimate Scheduling Search The “Job Search” page appears.

Click on the “Work Planner” drop down and select “Estimate Scheduling”.

Note: If you can’t see Estimate Scheduling but you have requested it, contact SPARQ. Request SPARQ to provide “Estimate Scheduling” when requesting Work Planner access.

The “Estimate Scheduling Search” page appears.



1.3 Open an Estimate Important: Close the estimate in Ellipse before changing dates using Work Planner.

Type in the estimate number.

Click the box: “hide auto-consolidated items”.

Search requires an exact and full number, not a partial number. Leading zeroes are optional.

A list of similar numbers will not be provided after pressing Search.

Press “Search” . If the number is invalid, press “New Search” and try another number.

If the estimate number is invalid, a warning appears. You cannot just change the number and press “Search” again. Press “New Search” which will clear the search number.

Need an exact and full number, not a partial match.

Leading zeroes are optional.

Instead, you could type in a Work Request to view all estimates in the WR. It would include rejected estimates and the latest versions of estimates, but it wouldn’t include packaged estimates.



The estimate appears. Then click to make sure all lines of the estimate are visible.

Important: Work Planner initially displays the first 1000 lines of an estimate. It does not warn there are missing lines, or indicate the number of lines displayed. To make sure all lines in the estimate are visible, click here:



1.4 Set the Work Planner Preferences Once an estimate is open, you can set your preferences and save them.

Column View Settings This is to set the columns that appear here:

There will be many already selected by default, but we only need a few. Press “Unset All” first

Tick these: Reference, Icon, Job Description, Planned Start Date, Planned Finish Date, and Work Group.

You can reorder them as they appear in the window from left to right (top to bottom on the list below). Click the radio button “ ” of the item to be moved then press

Press “Apply” when done to save the Column Settings.



Period Settings

Set the Period Settings to “Yearly”. Press “Apply” .

Save Preferences

Save your Preferences with a Name for next time you login. Press “Save” .

Load Preferences

Set to Load Preferences. Press “OK” .

After setting your preferences, press “Back” .

Wait a few seconds for the refresh.

1.5 Adjust the View

Column Window To see more columns at once, drag the divider to expand the window:

But Work Planner does not remember the “columns widths” and will reset them all after you change screens or log in again.

1.6 Functions and Window Size It’s best to maximise the window otherwise some functions can be hidden.

Some function icons are hidden on small screens/windows and are shown below:



1.7 Date View There are two ways to change the view of the bar chart. For large duration projects, it’s usually best to set it to “1 Day”.

Secondary method to change the view (same function as primary method): Click on “compress” or “expand” .

Primary method to change the view:

Click on . Set to “1 day”.

Can’t see the bars? After making adjustments, the project may move off panel.

Rollover a Reference and the project scrolls automatically into the panel. Note that the Phase, Product, Work Orders and CUs align with the bars.



1.8 Export Data from Work Planner Open an Estimate in Work Planner in Scheduling.

Click on “Excel” to open or save the Estimate.

Two choices will be presented: “Open” in a Web Browser then save as an HTML file, or “Save” as an Excel file.
