The Impact of Racism on the Student Affairs Professional: Updates from an In-Progress Mixed Methods Dissertation Study Suite 15 Trent Pinto, Director of Residence Education and Development, University of Cincinnati Racism on campus has far reaching implications. We know of the many effects on students and faculty, but very few studies have looked at how these incidents impact the personal and professional lives of student affairs professionals. How do SA pros respond? How supported do they feel by their institution? How do they support one another as well as students through activism? How are student affairs professionals persisting in their work when these types of incidents occur? What can and should be done by the SA pro community to improve the lives of one another? This research is in-progress so updates on data collected will be shared along with the roadmap for completion. Recommended Audience: Entry Level Professionals

Exploring the Relationship between Self-Efficacy and Dissent among Student Organizational Members Suite 8 Vicka Bell-Robinson, Director of Residence Life, Miami University This research project explored two very different constructs, self-efficacy and organizational dissent. Self-efficacy is the belief that one has in one’s ability to control or influence the events that occur in one’s life (Bandura, 1997). Dissent is communication of disagreement with the majority opinion or a specific individual who has more power than the individual communicating dissent (Stitzlein, 2014). Specifically, this project sought answer to three research questions. (1) What is the correlation between an individual’s level of self-efficacy and an individual’s experiences in offering dissent to a person in authority? (2) Does the correlation differ based upon which role a participant holds in their student organization? (3) Does experience with dissenting in one space correspond with one’s expression of dissent in a variety of different context? The result of the study was that there is a negative correlation between self-efficacy and organizational dissent. The presenter will go over the details of the study and provide ample opportunity for audience questions, small group and large group discussion, as well as a time for individuals to reflect on the impact of this research on their work with students. This isn’t your typical session, so be ready for honest advice combined with a healthy dose of humor and snark from two mid-level professionals. Recommended Audience: Entry Level Professionals
