pReSIDenT’S FoReWoRD

There’s a lot to be proud of this season, not least of which is that we have maintained our record of No Lives Lost on the patrolled Portsea Back Beach. I congratulate all of our Active lifesavers for their continued vigilance and service at our beach. Patroller numbers and turnouts were excellent this season, a credit to Club Captain, Sophie Riddell and her Operations Sub-Committee, including Lifesaving Director, Bec Gould. We have more work to do on our patrol structures and scheduling, particularly out-side the traditional summer holiday period, however our patrolling is greatly improved from five years ago.

One of the key drivers for improving patrols is better education and training for our active lifesavers and it’s pleasing to see the progress Education Director Matt Perrott and his newly formed Education Sub-Committee have made this season. In addition to our traditional Bronze Camp, Cadet and Nipper programs, the re-introduction of the Portsea Silver Camp offers our lifesavers the opportunity to attain the more advanced awards which are critical to ensuring our patrols and our beach are adequately resourced. Up-skilling our members is so important as it not only improves our skills and performance, but also promotes retention of our volunteers, instills a sense of pride and importantly helps develop our future leaders, benefitting both our Club and the community.

Competition is another area that has witnessed terrific improvement this season. I’d like to pay special mention to Matt Mahon and his team on the success of our Nipper competitors. It’s been fabulous to watch the re-emergence of the Portsea Nipper competition team over the last three years which this season saw Portsea finish in the Top 10 Victorian Clubs at the Victorian Junior Life Saving Champion-ships at Warrnambool. This is an outstanding result and is testament to the Club’s thriving Nipper program and all the hard work that goes into it. It also bodes well for our senior Competition team who, under Comp Director Nick Tissot, is re-emerging as a competitive force, with Portsea fielding three surf boat crews for the first time in years.

The Clubhouse Redevelopment Project continues to make progress as we edge closer to being able to start the single largest capital project in our Club’s history. The Building Sub-Committee, led by Craig Evans, is working with our Project Manager and an army of expert consultants to finalise plans and secure a building permit to enable the club to put the building contract out to tender. Concurrent with that process, we have a team working with Parks Victoria and the now Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change (formerly DELWP) seeking to negotiate a new lease, while another team works to raise the capital required to fund the project. Despite the many challenges involved, all three of the key work streams continue to progress well - and while a 2016 commencement was simply not possible, the Club is striving to start as soon as possible once certainty around funding, lease and permits are achieved. Stay tuned for further regular updates.

From an administration perspective, the Club has benefitted from a year of review and consolidation. With the Committee undergoing renewal at last year’s AGM, fresh eyes have brought some new perspectives and helped address some of our more persistent challenges. Our membership database is currently undergoing a much-needed review and cleanse. Our systems, processes and governance are being reviewed and amended in line with best practices and work is progressing on the development of the Club’s By-laws. We continued with our comprehensive policy development, covering issues such as member protection, the use of social media and a code of conduct that will be available on the Club’s website later this year for all to review. This work, coupled with the palpable sense of pride in our Club’s growing list of achievements will help lay the foundations for years of future success.

I’d like to thank the entire Committee for their contributions and hard work this year. Their ideas, energy and enthusiasm have been of great support, not only to me but to the entire Club. Brevity prevents me from singing the praises of each Committee member individually, although we are fortunate to have Sophie Riddell as our Club Captain who continues to impress with her maturity and work ethic. I’d also like to thank the many others who have volunteered to serve on one of our growing group of Sub-Committees which includes Operations, Nippers, Building, Fundraising, Education and Merchandise, as well as the organising committees for our key events, the Portsea Swim Classic and Pier to Perignon which continue to enjoy a huge following among the open water swimming community. The work and time commitment can be significant, but the positive impact that has come from sharing the load is immeasurable.

Congratulations also to Tim Hart, who was recently awarded the Life Saving Victoria President’s Commendation for his contribution to life saving at Portsea over a period of 31 years. Tim has held a number of Directorial positions on the Committee since his initial service in 1985 with the pivotal periods of his service being Club Captain from 1987/1994 and Treasurer from 1995/2015.

Finally, a very special thank you to all of our sponsors, supporters and donors. It is only through their ongoing generosity and support that Portsea SLSC is not only able to continue providing our volunteer emergency service, but is also getting closer to being able to build a fabulous new facility. Finally, on a personal note, a very big thank you to my wife Georgie and our three future Nippers, Issy, Tom and Coco. for their continued love and support. May Season 2016 - 2017 bring even more success to the Worlds Greatest Surf Lifesaving Club.

It has been another successful season down at Mt Levy Beach. Thank you to the Portsea Surf Life Saving Club for the opportunity to be Club Captain for the second year. I have gained so much out of this experi-ence as I continue to learn and appreciate all of the relationships I have formed and continue to form.

It takes hundreds of hours to coordinate the patrols, education programs, competition teams and the social events that the club offers. Thank you to all of the members of the Operational Sub Committee for your efforts; Bec Gould Life - Saving Director, Nick Tissot - Competition Director, Matt Perrott - Education Director, Jesse Faulkhead - Equipment Director, Max Mellor - Social Director, Sophie Yencken - Communi-cation Director and James Nola - IT Director.

The primary objective of surf lifesaving clubs is to patrol the beach and keep beach patrons safe. Under Bec Gould’s direction, our incredible patrol captains and vice captains have provided a high standard of service. Congratulations to Bec and her team on their performance, we are proud to state No Lives Lost between the flags since 1949.

Education was a huge focus this season in the second year of a three year process of change in the education structure. The Educational Sub-committee, which was set up by Emily Mellor, our previous Education Director and brought to fruition by our current Education Director Matthew Perrott, has assisted the club in unifying its education program. I would like to give a huge thank you to Matthew Perrott, this year’s John Wishart Medallist, who stepped up into the Education Director role this year.

Henry Kiss organised another year of the popular part-time Bronze Medallion course. It is such an excellent initiative and great to see all of the part time Bronzies on the beach on patrol. Jim Unkles coordinated a successful Bronze Camp, and we will be sad to see him step down from his role this year following 3 highly successful Bronze camps. James Tissot, for a second time, ran our Cadet Camp. This year we endeavoured to run a senior first aid course, but as the camp progressed, we realised the didactic nature of the teaching was not suitable for the young audience, requiring us to amend the program to include more physical activity sessions. Congratulations to James in handling the change in timetabling with maturity. We were encouraged to see the majority of the Cadets return to complete their Senior First Aid Certificate outside of Cadet Camp. We plan to move to a more water based and active Cadet Camp next year.

It was our second successful year of running the Surf Rescue Certificate for Under 14 Nippers, this year under the management of Andrew Theodosi. Sas McNamara, winner of the Lifesaver of the Year award and the final member of our Education Sub-Committee coordinated the junior members of the club to assist during the Nipper program. Sas did an excellent job in her role this year.

Equipment Director Jesse Faulkhead has become the guru of our lifesaving equipment, in particular the huge task of coordinating the water safety for the Portsea Swim Classic and Pier to Perignon special events.

President’s Club events continued throughout the season with record turnouts. Social Director Max Mellor did a sensational job creating a fun, family-focused environment, and it was great to see families self-catering on the barbecues while sharing a drink and a laugh amongst friends. Congratulations in particular to the excellent presentation night which Max organised with over 125 people in attendance.

On the competition front, under the coordination of Nick Tissot our Competition Director, we have seen the addition of three surf boat crews and the continued success of the Senior Competition, IRB and Masters teams. Our Nipper Competition team lead by Matt Mahon and his Nipper Sub Committee must be congratulated on their extraordinary efforts to take over 50 Nippers to the Victorian State Titles and returned with multiple medals which ranked Portsea in the top 10 teams. The effort Matt and his team have put into developing the Nipper competition team cannot be underestimated.

Sophie Yencken has done an excellent job designing and coordinating the pre- and post-season Boomers, invitations to events and our online social media. We now have over one thousand followers of our Portsea Instagram page.

James Nola has refurbished the clubs website and assisted with many behind the scenes IT issues which has been a huge assistance to the organisation.

Sam Paynter, Charlie Schall and the Nipper Sub-Committee should be congratulated on another successful Nipper season. I would like to make special mention of Sarah Cox and Sam Kerr, joint recipients of the Junior Development Managers Award in recognition of their administrative work for the enormous Nipper program. It certainly would not function without their hard work. The program now hosts over 570 Nippers and the positive influence this has on our community cannot be underestimated.

As always, we delivered successful community events with the Pier to Perignon and Portsea Swim Classic, with 800 and 1200 swimmers respectively. Darren “Spot” Kerr did an excellent job organising the Swim Classic and Peter Wilson led the Pier to Perignon - with both events running smoothly.

The clubhouse rebuilding project continues to create a sense of excitement around the club. A huge thanks to Craig Evans and the Building sub-committee for their ongoing efforts.

Working with the committee this year has been a pleasure. Thank you to Andrew Hewitt, Angelo Biviano, Rob Mellor and Tim Clark who were new to the committee and a great support to me in my role.

These continue to be very exciting times for our club with the new clubhouse edging closer and a range of other new initiatives under way to continue to develop the club. The clubhouse redevelopment project has dominated clubhouse conversations for the past couple of seasons as the excitement around the project continues to build. It is now more important than ever that all members assist the building project in whatever way possible as the project approaches critical milestones over the next few months.

While the building project has demanded its share of attention, it has not curtailed our ongoing efforts to evolve Portsea as a premier Victorian SLSC. As you will read in this Annual Report, we are now close to being fully self-sufficient in assessing our active members; our Nipper Program continues to go from strength to strength; Bronze, Silver and Cadet Camp places are in hot demand; our competition participation and results are resurgent; and our major events - the Portsea Swim Classic and the Pier to Perignon are thriving. The success of our social events has helped to cultivate a positive feeling around the club for all members.

Most importantly, we have maintained our excellent public safety record and patrol performance on the beach.

In the “back office”, we have seen several changes in the structure and composition of the Committee this year. The separation of the Building Sub-Committee from the general Committee has been a clear success and has enabled both groups to concentrate on their respective portfolios of activity in a more efficient and focused way. I congratulate the Building Sub-Committee for their perseverance in what has been a tedious and frustrating process at times.

We are acutely conscious of the loss of so many years of club experience brought by the changes to the Committee composition. I am sure that I speak for all new Committee members in thanking both the existing and previous Committee members for their patience and assistance in working with the newcomers through the transition. The new Committee has developed a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration and it is pleasing to see that all currently serving Committee members have offered to stand again.

This year saw the appointment of Sam Paynter to the formal role of Member Protection Officer (MPO) for the Club. The MPO role is now mandated for all clubs by LSV and Portsea SLSC strongly supports the

initiative. Sam’s contact details are available on the Club website and LSV member protection policies and grievance processes are available on the LSV website. I encourage all members to be aware of how to access our MPO should assistance ever be required. Related to the protection of our members and the public, we are conscious that our members compliance with Working With Children (WWC) requirements is below expected standards. Tim Clark will be leading an initiative to improve our WWC compliance over the coming months.

Under our new Treasurer, Angelo Biviano, we have streamlined the clubs financial reporting and payment processes and thanks largely to the efforts of Tim Hart, David Paterson and Angelo we have completed all outstanding audit requirements relating to prior year financial accounts.

As I near the end of my first year as Club Secretary, I would like to thank the people who have helped to make my transition into the role as smooth as possible. David Paterson has been generous with his time to help me understand the rich history of the role, as has Tim Hart. It has been a pleasure working with all members of the current Committee, led by Stu Rayner and Andrew Hewitt. I continue to be impressed by the talent of our younger committee members and the Operating Committee, led by the indefatigable Sophie Riddell. Emmaline Paterson keeps a low profile but has been tireless in performing the Club Administrator role and James Nola’s diligent contribution has been extremely valuable as IT Director. A special note of thanks goes to Ian Campbell for his work in preparing the Annual Report and also for taking on the role of Club Historian. Ian has negotiated space for Portsea SLSC in the LSV Archive in Port Melbourne and has made quick progress in building a collection of suitable club memorabilia.

With so much energy going into the ongoing development of the club I am very optimistic about our direction and like everyone I am looking forward to the coming season.

Thank you to everyone who put in time on the beach or behind the scenes this season. Yet again another successful season with No Lives Lost - it isn’t possible without your help. A massive thank you to all of the wonderful Patrol Captains and Vice Captains for ensuring patrols ran smoothly. It was so nice to see so many new and smiling faces on the beach this summer. I would also like to thank the committee and operational subcommittee for all their help.

This season saw another fantastic effort improving on the previous one. We completed two high scoring external patrol inspections, patrol numbers throughout the season were strong and the enthusiasm levels were high. We saw a late spike in warm weather, warm water and some crazy surf conditions which saw lots of people down on the beach over the Easter weekend and it was fantastic to see so many members celebrating the end of another season.

To be eligible for the Bronze Award, an Active Member must be financial, re-qualified and attend all rostered patrols in any season. Patrol Captains and Vice Captains are awarded the Silver Award for 100% attendance. The Gold Award is presented to an active member who has achieved Bronze or Silver awards for five consecutive years. My congratulations to all the 100% patrol attendance award recipients.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Without you we would not be the great lifesaving club that we are today. Patrolling is not always easy work but your efforts do not go unnoticed. Again, I would like to thank every single person who helps to patrol our beach. I have already started to plan for next season and I hope to see you all back again, ready for another fantastic season.

Portsea’s education program continues to grow with a record 392 new awards processed this season. All credit to the newly formed Education Sub Committee (ESC) for a remarkable result. Here’s a summary of the 2015-16 season’s education program:

Silver CampWe had great feedback from the reintroduction of the Development Camp rebranded as the Silver Camp, so we are already planning on making it bigger and better next year. Participants have the opportunity to gain their Advanced Resuscitation, Spinal Management and IRB Crew/Driver awards. Huge thanks to Elena Parker as Chief Instructor, Nick Tissot for driving the IRB all week, Simon Wilson for assessing and all the instructors for their efforts. Next season the IRB component will be held on a weekend and open to all club members.

Bronze CampJim Unkles ran Bronze Camp for the third year in a row and he tackled the challenge of sleeping half the camp off-site with ease. Entry into the Bronze Camp is highly competitive so special thanks to our Registrations Officer, Janine McDonald who tightly managed the process. Another special mention to whoever organised the cracking weather!

u/14 Surf Rescue CertificateU/14 Nippers get their Surf Rescue Certificate and this means they can compete with our ever growing competition team. The SRC Chief Instructor, Andrew Theodosi, did a fantastic job keeping the program to a tight schedule and motivating the kids. We may look into extending the hours next year to incorporate more skills-based activities and water time on top of the theory.

CadetsThanks to our Chief Instructor James Tissot, and also to Bec Gould, who did a great job with the Cadet Camp. We have reviewed the results from the camp and have made several changes to the format for next year which we believe will result in a truly excellent experience for participants and instructors.

part-time BronzeHenry Kiss runs a fantastic part-time Bronze course over October/November and this season’s course was no exception. The course is open to all ages, so if you missed out on Bronze camp or you’re a parent who’s keen to get more involved, this is a great opportunity. Well done to the Part-time Bronzies from this season!

RequalsAnother important part of our education program is the process of requalifying all your awards and Nick Nola did a superb job organising requalifications this year. We encourage all members to attend a Portsea requal, not only to go over the important skill updates, but because it is also a great opportunity to learn about changes to patrolling at Portsea specifically. Dr Sophie Riddell and Dr Natalie Hood put together a fascinating presentation on changes to life saving practices especially in relation to drowning and CPR.

As we patrol one of the most dangerous beaches in Australia, it’s crucial that we’re the best life savers!

Two other special mentions go to our Senior Education Officer, Piers Martin, and our Nippers Officer, Sas McNamara, who contributed greatly to the ESC this year. Piers organised all the extra training we do over summer, such as the three first aid courses we ran, while Sas organised all the instructors for the ever-increasing Nipper program. I’d also like to thank Education gurus, Sophie Riddell and Emily Mellor for helping out with the paperwork load!

Our education program has grown exponentially, as has the number of volunteers required to make it happen, full credit to the leaders on our ESC. Thanks to all the committee members, instructors and participants involved this year.

Since taking over as Social Director partway through the season I have had an incredibly rewarding experience organising the Clubs social events. Collectively we had an immeasurable amount of fun this season and with the help of the Operational Committee and many others we have, without a doubt, managed to host some truly memorable events.

It all started way back in November last year, with the Portsea SLSC Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course, which we organised to qualify more of our members to work behind the bar. We successfully gained 14 new RSA certificate holders and I am very grateful for their assistance at social events this season. It’s always nice seeing new faces behind the bar and I encourage everyone to help out where they can - it’s great fun!

We began the social proceedings with a Season Opener on the first day of Patrols in late November 2015. Preparation was well under way for our peak season of Presidents Clubs and we decided to encourage BYO meat to cook on the barbecues which turned out to be a great success. There’s nothing better than enjoying a cold drink with a steak fresh off the BBQ on a warm Saturday night in January.

Our first President’s Club on Boxing Day set the scene with impressive attendances. Lewis Hosie dropped an outstanding DJ set on our second Presi-dents Club, shining as the first of our musical acts for the season. Hottest Rock and Roll Group in the Country, “The Sacred Cows” took to the stage at Presidents Club number three, putting on a show to remember and the young talent of ”Brunga’s Band” performed at our fifth President’s Club. The live music really drew some massive crowds and it was awesome to see so many members and their guests at our Saturday night functions. Thanks again to the bar staff and kitchen helpers for their outstanding work. We’ve really tried to include and welcome members of all ages to our functions and having more family groups at our events this season has been really positive.

Communications Director Sophie Yencken and I organised the 2016 Portsea SLSC Door Knock in Portsea and Sorrento to raise money for the Club. Thank you to all the enthusiastic helpers who came along! Together we raised over $5,000 so congratulations to everyone involved. I also want to thank all our helpers who supported the barbecue stand at the Water Polo Victoria’s Polo by the Pier event in December. Nick Tissot managed a stall selling sausages and drinks and it was a fun day despite some chilly weather.

The Portsea Swim Classic after-party has always been a big night for our Club. We formally thanked the Swim Classic organisers for their efforts and also Tim Hart for his contribution to the Portsea SLSC over many years. We unveiled a new IRB named after the late Rick Berry, to commemorate his life and remember his dedication to the club. The Rick Berry IRB was christened by Rick’s mother Kaye in what was quite an emotional event. Thanks to Jimmy Unkles and the rest of the Lifeguard team for cooking up a storm to feed the hungry masses after a long day helping out at the Swim Classic.

The Pier to Perignon After Party took place following the successful 28th running of this epic Victorian event in early March. The swim itself was run extraordinarily well and we had a great night celebrating with the organisers and helpers.

Our annual end of patrolling season party “Captain’s Barrel” was certainly one to remember this year. Club Captain Sophie Riddell organised the incredible night, with decorations, delicious Paella from our friends at Peninsula Paella and even a photo booth. Resident DJ Lewis Hosie was on the decks again turning the entire Wishart Room into a dance floor and keeping the crowds happy with some great music. Thanks Sophie for an awesome night, it was a great way to conclude a fantastic season of Patrols.

Presentation Night was held at Beer Deluxe in Hawthorn and with so many amazing awards and a record attendance from all ages it was a great way finish to the season. Congratulations to all our award winners and for those who missed out, there’s always next year!

Thank you to everyone who has helped out, and if you’ve loved attending our events as much as I have, I’d like to hear your thoughts on how we could improve them. Make sure you’re in our Facebook group (PSLS Social) to stay in the loop for future events. Thanks for an unforgettable season!

2015/16 has been a fantastic season from an equipment perspective, with our gear being used more and more. Even with this increased use our repair bills are at an all-time low. This is mainly due to the high standard of training and greater respect everyone has developed for our gear. January was a massive month in particular with the addition of a new defibrillator, two new Tohatsu outboard motors and a new IRB, the “Rick Berry”, which was christened at the Portsea Swim Classic after-party by Rick’s mother, Kaye Berry.

Thanks to the many members who assisted me in my role this season, in particular Sophie Riddell, Nick Tissot, Darcy Cummins and Hamish McKendrick. Your guidance and assistance makes my job much easier. I would also like to acknowledge Brighton LSC, Sorrento SLSC and Williamstown LSC who assist us by generously loaning lifesaving equipment and crew for our major events. Finally I would like to acknowledge all the members who patrolled this season, thank you for your respect for our vital rescue equipment and remember, in our line of work gear does get damaged. When it does, please just make sure you tell someone so it can be repaired quickly.

There has been an enormous amount of work done by a large group of people on the new building project in order to turn a club dream into a reality.

We have now engaged Nash Management as the independent project manager to work with the Building Sub Committee (BSC) to oversee the project. The clubhouse has now moved into the documentation stage, with all of the main consultants on the project having being engaged.

The BSC has been working throughout the season and this work now continues through the winter in order to address all of the requirements that a project of this size and complexity invariably throws up. We are working across several areas including: Lease negotiations, Engagement of consultantsBuilding design finalisation, Funding, Site constraints,Stakeholder engagement,

Several areas of concern have become apparent during the process, requiring decisions to be made by the

Page 11: PORTSEAportseasurf.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/portsea-2015-2016 … · Senior First Aid Certificate outside of Cadet Camp. We plan to move to a more water based and active

club. These decisions have had to ensure that the new clubhouse not only blends effectively into the environment but doesn’t adversely affect it. This has had to be achieved whilst also maintaining the long-term stability and security of the facility. Due to these requirements the club has taken a very pragmatic approach to the issues faced and feels com-fortable with the solutions that have been adopted.

A major issue, which came very much into focus, was how to combat the longer term coastal erosion issues that the new planning guidelines cited, whilst minimising the effect on the very pristine environment and very fragile ecology that the club is so lucky to be a part of. The main area of concern has been the design of the foundations that will be required to ensure the stability of the building in the event of a major storm that has the potential to cause major coastal erosion similar to that experienced in NSW earlier this year. This was required as the alternative was to protect the beach itself using environmentally unsympathetic methods such as that used on the Portsea front beach.

The projects scale and the complexities that the site has thrown up have certainly had an effect on our budget. We continue to work on this, but would stress the need for those people who have not already got involved in the Clubhouse Rebuild Appeal to get involved. This can be done in a number of ways including a financial commitment as cash or in-kind donations of materials or equipment. Please feel free to approach Nick Martin or anyone on the BSC if you believe you can be of assistance. Everything, no matter how small, makes the job that much easier and brings the start date forward.

I would like to thank all of the people who have been actively involved over the season, including those involved in the discussion groups that have been conducted, coming up to us through the season to give advice, suggestions, support or to help open doors where required.

I would like to make special mention of the members of the BSC committee: Andrew Cox, Brett Croft, Cameron Hunter, Matthew Mahon, Fiona McLean, Ashley Murdoch, Matthew Perrott, Andrew Regan and Nick Tissot who have kindly donated and continue to donate a great deal of their time to this great project and to Nick Martin who is working hard behind the scenes fundraising for this project.

Congratulations to all Portsea Competitors on their outstanding effort throughout the 2015 / 2016 competition season, with a spectacular display of participation shown from our Nippers, Seniors, Boaties, IRB and Masters teams.

Whether you competed in a team or solo, I know that you wore the red and white Portsea Competition cap

with pride and competed to the best of your abilities. It’s great to see Portsea competitors showing respect for their opponents while displaying a healthy dose of determination and drive to win. I look forward to bigger and better results next year!

Congratulations to all our state medal winners! It is no small feat to battle your way through numerous rounds of beach or water races and end up in the finals, only to clash against the quickest and fittest in Victoria. You’ve done yourself and Portsea SLSC proud!

Finally, although we see the results from our competitors, we cannot overlook the tremendous behind-the-scenes work from our competition managers, captains, team leaders, age group leaders, officials, support staff and countless parents that willingly give their time to ensure everything runs smoothly. Without your input, the Portsea Competition Team would not have grown to the size that is has, and would not operate at the high level it does today.

Surf Boat Competition ReportWith the very generous assistance of the Committee and also from new sponsor, Dominic Lamattina of DLC Property Group, the club embarked on a reincarnation of the Portsea Surf Boat Team.

Surf boat competition activities commenced in April of 2015 with an Open Men’s Crew comprising Jack Perkin, Peter Considine, Sam Troon, Will Blewett and sweep Stephen Blewett. Sadly, a short time into the pre-season preparation, Peter ruled himself out of further participation as a consequence of a chronic back injury. Rhys Cranney was promptly recruited and the crew (The “Portsea Cannons”) saw out the season without further change.

During August James Tissot put together an Under 23 crew consisting of himself, Pat Spinazollo, Hamish Molnar, Charles Forbes and Nick Waddell. Unfortunately, despite putting in some very good training sessions prior commitments stood in the way of training beyond Christmas and competition for the season. We have great expectations of these fellows for the future.

In September we were approached by Mel von Moger to create a crew, the Portsea Gulls, of herself, Em von Moger, Ellen McNamara and Jacqui Forbes.

In October we commenced putting together a further Open Womens crew, the Portsea Darlings, consisting, ultimately, of Sophie Klopper, Simone Roszbach, Laura Gray and Scarlett Blewett.

The domestic season saw some promising devel-opments and results however a lack of surf work compromised our racing endeavours. At the State Championships the 2 womens crews just missed the Finals while the Open Mens crew went on to win the silver medal. During November, December, January and February the Open Men competed in the Ocean Thunder series conducted at Dee Why in Sydney.

This series of 4 events brings together most of the fastest crews in the land. We enjoyed mixed results but once again, lack of surf work compromised our program and we finished at the lower end of the ladder rather than the mid-table finish of our ambitions.

Over the many years of my involvement in surf boat competition I have always regarded two thresholds as measures of the success or otherwise of a seasons endeavours. First, winning the respect of fellow competitors Australia wide and secondly achieving the Quarter-finals of the Australian Championships (that is, the top 24 crews in the land). To achieve those marks with a new combination has always augured well for the future prospects of a clubs development.

In our case the Open Men’s crew reached the Quarter-finals and, from a very unfair “alley”, were very narrowly eliminated by Austinmer who reached the top 8 and Coogee who won the Bronze medal in the Final.

In the Open Womens event the Portsea Gulls finished 27th and the Portsea Darlings finished 35th. In each case these were remarkable results following various compromises to their respective preparations for the Championships. The Gulls training suffered with work commitments limiting their time in the boat and the Darlings made their way with 2 novice surf rowers in the crew. In each case we expect great things from these crews in the future.

Despite a season marked by many difficulties associated with a newly formed Boat Team we have well and truly established the basis for a successful future for our club. Once again, I thank the club and our fellow members for their assistance and support - and a very grateful nod of appreciation for Dominic Lamattina, of DLC Property Group who has enabled us to set up the Boat Team with the foundation of sufficient gear to take the club into the next phase of our development.

At the time of writing this report we have an Open Men’s crew and an Open Women’s crew in training with an expectation of those crews being joined by another women’s combination and an Under 23 Men’s combination. We are also looking at various options to become even better equipped to pursue our objectives.

IRB Competition ReportIn the modern era of life saving, the rescue tool of choice is the inflatable rescue boat. Like other modes of rescue racing our craft is part of the annual calendar of life saving events.

After months of training in decreasing water temperature and increasing wind and rain, the season got off to a start at Dromana in early May. We set up our boats early in the morning, only to be told 30 minutes later to pack up again due to the weather. Despite this early close of the carnival we won both races that day.

Fresh from our unpacking and packing victories we headed to 13th beach for the second carnival of the season. Each of our teams was able to get wet before the Westerly wind started flipping boats as they reached the crest of the waves. Unfortunately another day ended early with no real results.

A fortnight later we raced at Lorne. Despite the wind and rain, with a sheltered beach and small waves, the carnival was able to proceed from start to finish. It was the first real test of our newly configured teams who all raced well. No doubt the main race of the day for Portsea was the Tube Rescue event. The final had Darcy & Sean Cummins in a swim off for family glory. Darcy’s team just snuck over the line in front of Sean’s team, who was doing the event for the first time. Our teams featured well in the Mens Rescue and Women’s Teams, but finished just short of pennants.

The fourth carnival was on the Queens Birthday long weekend at Portland. The weather gods, with no explanation, again struck down any chance of finishing the carnival.

Undeterred by the fact that all our training has only seen one full carnival, we continue on with determination and a bouncy attitude.

The team would like to thank our greatest supporters, our officials - Gayle Morris, Michael Morris, Alan Hailes and Mick Cummins for turning up to stand on a freezing beach to allow us to compete.

The local season culminated in the Victorian Championships at Lorne with a Gold medal to Portsea in the Mens Tube Rescue. Congratulations to Darcy Cummins, Jesse Faulkhead and David Morris. The SLSA IRB National Titles were held at Mollymook Beach, NSW in late July 2016. Portsea competed with the best in Australia, making it to the semi finals in Open Female IRB Team event.

nipper Competition ReportThe 2016 Nipper Competition Season went out on a high with Portsea recording its best ever result at a State Titles. Fifty-five of our Nippers donned the Red and White and headed to Warrnambool for the two day event held over the Labour Day long weekend.

The highlight of the Championships was Portsea finishing 10th in the Overall Club Championship, which ranks the 40-odd Clubs in attendance. The rise reflects the development of this reasonably new team, and is testament to the work done by our coaches and Nippers to improve their lifesaving skills.

We had a further 7 teams or individuals who finished in fourth place, the closest being the U11 Girls Wade Relay team (Milla Richardson, Holly Grainger, Tiffany Crosthwaite and Charlotte Mahon) who lost in a photo finish. The team was capably led at the State Titles by our inaugural Team Captains, Ruby Richardson and Charlie Flockart. Both did a fantastic job! Overall it was a great season, with more than 70 Nippers representing Portsea at carnivals.

Season highlights included:Pre-season camp at Lorne Portsea presence at carnivals at Mount Martha, Point Leo, Elwood, Ocean Grove and LorneA solid program of well-attended Nipper competition team training sessionsTwo special appearances from Iron woman Harriet Brown, supporting our great panel of coachesA great club dinner attended by more than 120 people at the State Titles at Warrnambool.A special thanks to all who competed, assisted as age managers, officiated, provided water safety, coached, lugged gear and drove tired kids all over Victoria for the Club. Thanks must also be extended to the Club for all of its support, and to Nipper Competition Team sponsors for 2016, Winnett Specialist Group and EY.

Victorian Masters Championships ReportThat One Day In February rolls around quickly as a great group of Portseaís finest seniors made their way to Lorne for the annual Masters Titles.

The team, comprising Julian (Bona) Grainger, Andreas (Charlie) Schall-Riaucour, Dwight (Derwite) Harrison, Andrew (Henry) Kiss, Michael (Whippy) Wilson), Steve Daniels, Angelo Biviano and Wayne (Stolfa) Stoll arrived to an overcast morning that turned into a glorious sunny day with a pleasant 3ft typical Lorne surf with a gentle onshore zephyr keeping the team cool between events.

The highlight of the day was the magnificent effort by 150+ year Ski Team with the Gold Medal winning combination of Michael Wilson, Charlie Schall and Julian Grainger who live by the adage: “a champion team will always beat a team of champions”!

Steve Daniel summed-up his Silver medal in the Flags as ìsurprisingî. Not so, Steve. Portsea are legendary in flags at Masters. Special mention to Michael Wilson who was forced to race against the 60-64 “kids” as there doesnít appear to be anyone else in the 65+ category. Wayne Stoll’s success in winning medals in both beach and water activities made him the most versatile and successful athlete of the day!

Major eventsportsea Swim ClassicThe 2016 Portsea Swim Classic was another fantastic event with over 3,500 people descending on Point Nepean National Park to celebrate the 30th anniversary of everyoneís favourite open water race on Saturday 16th January. Thanks to the glorious sunshine and weather conditions we saw a record number of on-day entries and a total of 1,650 swimmers in the main 1.5km event ñ an amazing turn out! 2016 also saw the introduction of the Portsea Swim Classic Gold ñ a 2.5km swim course for those competitors looking for a greater challenge. Capped at 200 entrants, the Gold sold out quickly and is set to grow over the next few years. All our swimmers were supported and cheered on by close to 2,000 family members and friends.

The day commenced with the Nipper Swim Classic and in addition to the hundreds of Portsea Nippers who competed, we also welcomed Nippers from many other surf clubs who participated in the event. The Nippers are to be congratulated for the spirit in which they competed and the encouragement shown to their fellow Nipper competitors ñ well done to all.

Congratulations to Harry Molnar & Ebony Ebenwalder on winning the inaugural Portsea Swim Classic Gold

The 1.5km Portsea Swim Classic was taken out by regulars to the Swim Classic podium, Zac Charlton and Kelly Stubbins.

The highly anticipated, hotly contested Hahn SuperDry Dash 4 Cash drew a large crowd and was enjoyed by all. Many tried, but no one could overcome our dual champions of the day, Zac Charlton and Kelly Stubbins.

We simply could not run the event without the support of our generous sponsors and partners. We’d like to say a BIG THANK YOU to our 2016 team: naming rights sponsor Blazer Clothing; Portsea Swim Classic Gold sponsor and Dash for Cash sponsor Hahn SuperDry; Swim cap sponsors Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and Walnut Melbourne; and event sponsors and partners Splitrock Tiro, Australian Bananas, Orca, Bulla Family Dairy, Simone Perele, Minor Figures Iced Coffee, Amanzi Swimwear, Just Fine Food Sorrento, Scicluna’s of Sorrento and Carman’s Kitchen. Thanks also to Sorrento Rotary, Sorrento CFA and Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad for their logistics support on the day. Thanks must also be given to the many Portsea volunteers who gave their time not only on the day, but in the days, weeks and months leading up to the event. Thank you for all your hard work, it is greatly appreciated!

Later that evening volunteers and their families enjoyed a much-deserved BBQ and drinks at the Swim Classic after-part. Held at the clubhouse, it was an extra special occasion with the unveiling of our newest IRB, the “Rick Berry”. Darren Kerr pippa SkinnerSwim Classic Director Swim Classic Sponsorship Manager

The club members gathered at Sorrento on an overcast chilly morning to start the registration area setup. Liz Jensen, Director of the Portsea ñ Sorrento branch of Kay & Burton real estate agents, who are the long-time major sponsor of this great event, along with her sales team of David, Rob, Lorna and Jan who together assisted in setting-up the registration area before all de-camping to Portsea to further assist at the finish line. The Club greatly values the ongoing support of Kay & Burton who have sponsored the P2P since 2004. Their hands-on approach is a great local support for the club.

Thanks to Baked in Portsea, the Sorrento Meat Company, Scicluna’s of Sorrento, Aegir Divers, Splitrock Natural Spring Water and of course Moet Hennessy for their continued support with post-race goodies and funding. Local businesses supporting your lifesavers!

Club water safety leader Jesse Faulkhead was well supported by his team of IRB crews and board paddlers. These members are a vital part of the safety of all our swimmers as they spread-out along the coast heading for Portsea.

The club also depends on long-time members of Port-sea who manage the various areas of the event: Peter Wilson is in his 3rd year as P2P Director; Andrew Perkins and Henry Kiss Finish Area Coordinators, Craig Evans, Registration Coordinator and Ian Campbell who manages the website and entries. A special mention to our event announcer Graham Wells, who advises, supports and entertains us in the registration area.

The ranks of our 20 Year swimmers were added to with presentations to Graham Chapman, Paul Doherty, Gary Stockton and Justin McNamara. Regrettably 19 year swimmers Peter Moore and John Williams were late withdrawals and will have to wait another year to hit the 20 year mark.

First across the line was Sam Sheppard in a time of 33.53 and first female and 11th overall Georgia Stott in 38.42.

The traditional Humble Founders crown goes to Ted in a respectable time of 50:07 with Robbie wading ashore in 53:25.

The club values highly the income derived from this event and all funds are channelled into equipment for the protection of swimmers on the iconic Portsea Back Beach.
