erplants, this trend will

be the one to shape the

future of performance

products in our industry. The number

of turbocharged cars is also growing in

domestic drag racing. While professional

road racing is no stranger to the turbo

setup, the trend is definitely making its

way down through the grassroots levels.

Street performance is moving away from

bolt-on applications and is trending into

more serious upgrades. The economic

downturn has shaken out the casual

enthusiast and left the industry with the

hardcore performance buyer. This phe-

nomenon is evident in all segments. The

market for performance exhaust systems

has changed dramatically. Where mufflers

and straight pipes once topped the modifi-

cations list, enthusiasts are having to com-

promise and adhere to tougher emissions

and exhaust-noise legislation. Retailers

should become very focused. Sales have

increased dramatically for those businesses

that have developed reputations for expert

service or knowledge in a given plat-

form or brand. Niche businesses succeed

because of this, and so I stress education

and movement toward proficiencies in

electronics and forced induction. I would

recommend that retailers guard against

being “all things to all people.”

People want a little

bit of everything right

make an educated decision on what

to purchase and why. I would say that

98% of the industry is not organized.

We get a lot of customers who are

weekend racers, who want to go the

dragstrip one weekend and a road

course the next weekend with their

daily cars.

Retailers should find a niche mar-

ket that they know about and enjoy

helping with and getting involved in.

But always buy quality parts that you

know the manufacturer will support.

Stay away from the knock-off stuff, as a

lot of those manufactures won’t support

the product or be able to help with tech.

Retailers will have good sales based on

their knowledge of their markets. You

just need to find your niche and stick

with it. There are tons of untapped mar-

kets out there. Finding one is the best

way to make your company stand out.

most of our customers

are going. Our cus-

tomers want depend-

able, +500hp cars,

but that is hard to achieve in the four-

cylinder engines we deal with. Shops

like ours are working to develop niche

parts to help, and I am also seeing a

major rebirth in sport-compact drag

racing. Our shop is directly involved

with four cars, and we’re also working

with local race tracks to put together

events to get more people racing and

more spectators seeing how fast these

cars really are. The fan base is growing

again. Any business that sticks with its

core customers and treats them well will

find the greatest opportunities, but stay

away from dropping price as a way to

try to steal customers from other busi-

nesses. Not all customers are about

price alone, and most are willing to

pay for your time and knowledge. The

customers who are all about price prob-

ably won’t be loyal. Don’t be afraid to

make money, charge what a product is

really worth, and earn your customers

through hard work.

Years ago, we were able

to repair and modify

our own cars. A lot of

people now simply buy

performance. We used

to start with a stock

Chevrolet or Ford

block and outfit it with aftermarket parts,

but we just got an engine into my shop

that doesn’t have a single OEM part in it.

We call it a Chevrolet because it’s based on

that design, but there aren’t any Chevrolet

parts in it. The aftermarket is able to figure

out how the factory parts can be improved

and then builds in more efficiency. The

factory continually makes refinements,

too, but the factory can’t do it as quickly

as the aftermarket. There are also a lot of

aftermarket parts now that are designed to

work with other aftermarket parts without

any modifications—for instance, a set of

Dart cylinder heads that are designed to

work with a specific Jesel rocker system.

If you called Jesel to order a set of rocker

arms and told them what cylinder head

you were using, they could send you parts

that were designed for that head. Retailers

need to look at those combinations and

be educated in what they’re selling.

relationship with a warehouse distribu-

tor (WD) that will give them access to

lines that they don’t buy direct. The few

points given up on margin will be more

than made up in a more efficient and

between a manufacturer and retailer is a

thing of beauty.

tune electronic injec-

need to be aware of emissions regulations,

and they should also look at the hybrid cars

that are coming into the market and what

them. Some of the OEM and aftermarket

manufacturers are also talking about E85

fuel. Stay on top of where the OEMs

are going. On the traditional business

side, it’s all about quality. People are tired

of buying cheap parts that don’t last, so

instead of buying a $99 turbo kit on eBay,

they’re going to spend the money to do it

right. In racing, drifting has crossed over

from the import to the domestic market,

and a lot of grassroots sanctioning bodies

are supporting that sport. When it started,

the professional drivers and sponsored cars

took the fun out of it for the local guys.

Now people are putting their extra money

into their cars and then getting together at

local drift events all across the nation. You

only have to open your eyes to see how the

market is changing.

I hear lots of consumers complaining

about tech and customer service support

at both the manufacturer and jobber

levels. Consumers have less disposable

cash and are more careful where they

spend it; therefore, good tech and cus-

tomer support are often the deciding

factors in what and where to buy. We

also need to be concerned about the

exodus of youth from our industry. An

overwhelming number of products and

services are competing for their atten-

tion. It has been common practice in our

hobby for the older generation to look

down on and ignore younger hobbyists.

We need to embrace them. Encourage

them. Get them involved. As the aver-

age age of our older customers increases,

they will die off and not be replaced by

younger enthusiasts.

The continued devel-

opment of LS- and

late-model-based per-

formance equipment

and the rapid growth of

what started out as the

“rat rod” market has

developed a whole new generation of do-

it-yourself hot rodders. In addition to the

late-model Camaro, Mustang and Chal-

lenger enthusiasts, there is also this retro-

rod movement that is looking to build cars

and recreate the lifestyle of the ’50s and

’60s. We went through a generation of

people who would take their vehicles to a

shop if they wanted a turbo or an exhaust

fitted. These new people, who are in their

late teens to early 30s, are more like the

earlier generation, where we worked on the

cars ourselves. There are now even a couple

of magazines dedicated to the movement,

including Hot Rod Deluxe and Car Kulture Deluxe. We have also seen very positive

growth in the nostalgia racing market

and the late-model circle track racing

market. A more troubling development

is the ever-decreasing market share for the

three-step distribution process. It’s a very

real challenge for the entire industry, and so

is the continued pressure of overseas manu-

facturing and importation of parts on local

ing up almost daily for

these cars, just as they did for the old

Fox-body 5.0L. The LS engine platform

continues to grow from street rods and is

gaining acceptance in some forms of racing

as well. The interesting thing is that most

Ford enthusiasts stick with the factory

EFI and modify the engine and program

together. The LS family is also used with

factory EFI, yet there are many applica-

tions where a carburetor is used! Bolt-on

products are required due to the influx of

late-model performance. Items that can

be added without modifying any wiring

or other parts of the car are welcomed

by enthusiasts who either don’t want to

modify their cars too much or are in the

do-it-for-me group. Technology and com-

puters are being accepted more and more

by racers. That said, retailers need to be

up-to-speed on products that require PC

programming or a handheld controller.

The new generation

centration with all of these vehicles is on

ability. The challenge for aftermarket

companies is to create parts that truly

add performance and power to these

advanced powerplants and won’t “crash”

their engine-management systems. We’re

also going to see more mobile-electronics

interfacing and that is something we all

need to learn to work with and capitalize

on. Retailers must embrace information to

help them sell the right parts and reinforce

their customers’ buying decision. Retailers

need to bone up on their tech and product

knowledge and hire salespeople who know

the products, cars, customers and pitfalls.

The economy has

changed how businesses

operate. I find more

businesses are doing

more with less and have

measured the results

of their spending and

return on investment. If the numbers don’t

make sense, a project is no longer supported

by the company. Many companies are

also approaching sales with a whole new

level of service and relationship building.

Retailers should embrace the changes in

the industry but guard against assuming

the customer is only interested in price. I

believe the consumer will have information

overload at a certain point. That is when a

competent salesperson can really shine and

make the sale. The accuracy of a manufac-

turer’s data will continue to be an issue for

the manufacturer and each part of the selling

channel. Without accurate data, a new sales-

man (even using a computer database) will

not be able to keep up with the changes in

our industry. Traditional mediums of print

magazines and catalogs are only one way

to reach the consumer. Recognizing that a

larger number of consumers only search for

parts in an electronic fashion should illus-

trate how important accurate manufacturer

data has become.
