San Jacinto College Soccer 20102

2010 Season OutlookDespite just five returning

players and a slew of newcomers on this year’s San Jac men’s soccer team, Head Coach Dr. David Santesteban expects great things from his squad. This year’s rookie class comes to San Jac with a wealth of experience under its belt, and Santesteban is excited to see how the team comes together. “This team is a very technical group, much more than last season,” said Santesteban, who is in his seventh season at the helm of the San Jac soccer program. “They are disciplined and hungry to play games.”

Santesteban expects his 2010 squad to be balanced, with contribution across the field coming from everyone on the roster. He likes their attitude and work ethic, and thinks that – coupled with talent – will take this team back to the national tournament.

Returnees Victor Ruiz and Alfonso Magaña are expected to be leaders on and off the field for San Jac. Ruiz, a midfielder, was a 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-region selection last season after recording four

assists and one goal for San Jac. “Victor should become a consistent threat in assists and goals,” noted Santesteban. Forward Magaña will be looked to for goal scoring. “He has a great shot on goal, and his experience from last year should help him to settle in and become more consistent,” added Santesteban. In addition to Ruiz and Magaña, San Jac also returns Israel Nava, Jared Munoz, and Joel Perales. These sophomores will be looked upon to bring the discipline and positive attitude that was missing from last year’s team.

Santesteban is excited about his incoming class, and feels they bring a high level of experience to the field. Three newcomers have youth national team experience – Erik Stephenson, US U-17 national team; Josh Hernandez, US U-20 MNTI; Francisco Calvo, Costa Rica U-20 MNT – while several bring talent from youth academy teams of professional clubs. Carlos Picado, a transfer from NCAA division I Virginia Commonwealth, will add depth in attack. Santesteban expects their experience to lift the level of his team, and help them return to the NJCAA national championship tournament.

In goal there will be a battle for the starting spot between Reece Clift of Houston, Rodrigo Segura from Pearland, and Bryan Medeiros from Miami. Each had solid high school and club careers, which will benefit this year’s San Jac squad.

As is the case every year, a trip to the NJCAA national tournament is the ultimate goal, and this season is no exception. Santesteban notes that the team must focus on the basics in order to achieve that goal. “There is no substitute for hard work, improving skills, following team values, and giving 100 percent,” said Santesteban. “We know we can’t control our opponent, but we can control ourselves, and that’s what we’ll focus on.”

San Jac’s schedule includes instate rival Tyler, who SJC will see twice during the season. SJC will also see Barton County, a preseason top-10 selection. In all, San Jac will play host to nine home games this season, many of them under the relatively new lights at the South campus soccer field. The Region XIV tournament will be played at the site of the top seed, and the NJCAA national tournament returns to Tyler in mid-November - a trip that Santesteban, and his team, plan to make run at.

San Jacinto College Soccer 20106

Head coach David Santesteban is entering his seventh season at the helm of the San Jacinto Col-lege soccer program. Santeteban has built San Jac into not only a well-known name in the soccer community, but a powerhouse in the junior college ranks.

A four-time Region XIV and Mid-Southwest District coach of the year, Santesteban has led his San Jacinto College teams to the Region XIV championship in five of his six years as head coach. The 2007 and 2008 seasons resulted in consecutive Mid-South District championships culminating in trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament, a tournament that is quickly becoming “home” to San Jac soccer.

The 2008 season was the most successful year for San Jac men’s soccer. Santesteban’s team finished as the national runner-up after plowing through the competition in the first two rounds of the national championship. Three players were named NJCAA and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Americans, and five others earned national recognition. Kieron Bernard, the team’s defensive MVP, signed a professional contract with the Austin Aztex FC.

In 2004 and 2005, San Jac won the Mid-South District champions and went on to respective third and fourth place finishes at the NJCAA tournament. For his efforts, Santesteban was named the Mid-South District coach of the year both seasons, and the team was honored with the Sportsmanship Award at the 2004 national championship.

Off the field, Santesteban’s teams have posted solid academic marks as well. “This is a testimony to the excellent programs at the Student Success Center and the overall support of our faculty, staff, and administration,” said Santesteban. “San Jacinto College is an excellent institution to begin the academic process.”

Along those lines, Santesteban feels a dedication to his players in and out of the classroom. “First and foremost, we want to help develop the student-athletes who come to San Jacinto College with the desire to use our path as a stepping stone to a four-year de-gree,” he said. “To see these young players come into the program, mature as young men and eventually get a degree, is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of my coaching role. While we strive for excellence and set our sights on the national tourna-ment each year, earning a solid education is far more valuable than any championship.”

Prior to coming to San Jacinto College, Santesteban was the head coach at Southwest Oregon Community College from 2000 to 2003, where the Lakers boasted an overall mark of 33-22-10 and made two playoff appearances.

From 1996 to 1999 Santesteban was the assistant coach at the University of New Mexico where he helped the Lobos earn its first-ever NCAA Division I top-20 rankings.

As a player, Santesteban was a member of the nationally ranked Fresno State Bulldogs (1989-1990). During his career, Fresno State advanced to two Big West Championship title games, and made two NCAA playoff appearances. He also played for Fresno City College, where he was awarded all-conference first-team honors in two consecutive seasons (1987-1988). His professional experi-ence includes the San Francisco Bay Diablos and Santa Cruz Surf of the USISL. He was also a member of the semi-professional San Jose Oaks (National Open Cup Champion). From 1996-1997, Santesteban trained with Club Atletico Osasuna of the Spanish second division in Pamplona, Spain, and also worked in the front office under the director of the soccer school, Manolo Los Arcos Zaratiegui.

In 2007, Santesteban earned his doctorate degree in sports administration from the University of New Mexico. He also holds bach-elor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Fresno State University.

Santesteban and his wife, Michelle, reside in Houston with their three daughters Gabriele, Mikaela and Eliana.

Ian Spooner is in his third season as an assistant coach with the San Jacinto College soccer team. A former goalkeeper in college, Spooner works mainly with the San Jac keepers, continuing the tradition of excellence of past SJC goalies. Spooner spent the 2005-06 season as the assistant coach at Cumberland University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He has also spent the last three years as a professional staff coach for Space City Soccer Club.

Spooner hails from Houston, but played collegiately at Western Michigan from 2001-2005. As a keeper for the Broncos, he was named the Mid-American Conference player of the week in September of 2003. He was the 2004 Western Michigan Most Valuable Player.

Spooner holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Western Michigan.

Troy Rabon, MAT, ATC, LAT, is in his fourth year as an athletic trainer at San Jacinto College. He works primarily with softball, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and the San Jac cheer squad.

Rabon enjoys working at San Jacinto College because of the relationships he is able to build with coaches and student-athletes. “It’s easier to develop strong and trusting relationships,” he says. As for his philosophy on athletic training, Rabon states, “I just try to instill in all of my student-athletes that I’m always here to help them.”

Rabon enjoys athletic training because he loves helping people and sports equally. For him, it was the perfect fit.

Prior to coming to San Jacinto College, Rabon worked on the collegiate level at the University of Texas, Texas Tech University, and Florida A&M University. He has also worked for the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Braves, in addition to a private position as a trainer for US Olympic track and field athletes.

Rabon holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas, and a master’s in athletic training from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He resides in League City.

Dane Richards (right)

Soccer players of any age can gain inspiration from the tale of Dane Richards and Kieron Bernard, former soccer stars at San Jacinto College who have taken their game to the next level. There is little doubt that the Jamaican-born players, and many of their peers, dreamed one day of making it to the big stage. Well, Richards and Bernard have done just that.

Prior to the 2003 season, Richards might not have known exactly where Houston was on the map, but former San Jacinto College head coach Ben Hunter knew him. Hunter, who had developed quite a knack for recruiting players from Jamaica, brought Richards to San Jacinto College that season. The rest, as they say, is history.

The 2003 team, the last to play for the now retired Hunter, won 17 straight games before falling to Tyler in the Region XIV title game. Richards, displaying remarkable speed and ball handling skills, scored 20 goals that season. Playing for current head coach Dr. David Santesteban the following season, Richards scored 25 times, becoming the all-time career scorer at San Jac. Along the way, Richards guided the team to a third-place finish at the national tournament.

Richards went on to lead Clemson University to the NCAA College Cup, earning second-team NSCAA All-American honors after scoring 11 goals and nine assists in 20 games as a senior. He was a Hermann Award Finalist that year, and also garnered a NSCAA All-South first team selection as well as a first-team All-ACC selection. After graduation, the New York Red Bulls drafted Richards in the second round of the 2007 amateur draft. Now, the Montego Bay na-tive is living his dream and playing the sport professionally. The Red Bulls’ midfielder made his first professional start in April 2007 at Columbus and notched his first MLS point when he assisted on Clint Mathis’ goal on April 15 against FC Dallas. Richards scored his first career MLS goal on May 5, 2007, against Real Salt Lake. He was a finalist for the 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year.

“I knew Dane could do this,” Santesteban said. “In 2004, it didn’t take me long to see what type of player he was and what he could become. It’s a credit to his work ethic. It proves that if you do things right and believe, you have a chance to do whatever you like.”

Bernard, who Santesteban recruited, followed much of the same path as Richards. He came to San Jac from Spanish Town, Jamaica, and quickly made his mark on the SJC program. A crafty defender, Bernard quickly estab-lished himself as a premier collegiate player. He captained the San Jac men’s soccer team to a second place national finish in 2008, and also played for Portmore United in the Jamaican National Premier League in the 2008-09 season.

“I’m very excited for Kieron,” said Santesteban. “He’s a tremendous player and has a bright future ahead of him as a professional player. I would expect that it won’t take too long before he’s playing in the MLS (Major League Soc-cer) or possibly even in England.”

Bernard was a two-time NJCAA and NSCAA All-American.

Where have they gone?

The opportunity for San Jacinto College soccer players to continue their education and playing careers at four-year institutions is real. San Jacinto college Your Goals. Your College.

Surrounded by the monuments of history, industries, and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age of tomorrow, San Jacinto College has been serving the citizens of East Harris County, Texas for nearly 50 years. The College’s service area includes the Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, La Porte, Pasadena and Sheldon Independent School Districts, as well as portions of the Humble, Pearland, and Clear Creek school districts.

College roots date back to May of 1960 when voters in the district approved the creation of East Harris County Union Junior College, and a seven-member Board of Regents was established. The name was changed a few times over its history to its current San Jacinto Community College District, although it has always been informally referred to as San Jacinto College. In September of 1961, 876 students attended the College at its location in Pasadena. Since then, the College has grown to include three campuses, nine extension centers, a continuing and professional development division, distance learning, a dual credit program with local high schools, an early college high school in cooperation with Clear Creek ISD, and an enrollment of more than 29,000 students each semester.

San Jacinto College is committed to the citizens of East Harris County. At the core of our values is student success… the reason for our being. Our comprehensive community college mission is to empower students who come with a wide variety of goals to find the assistance they need at their college – San Jacinto College. Our commitment to the community is to assist in developing a skilled and trained work force through the Continuing & Professional Development (CPD) division, which offers programs and courses for individuals to retain or advance in their jobs, or make career transitions.

We have made a strong commitment to academic excellence. Our students choose from more than 140 degrees and certificates in a variety of fields including academic transfer to four-year institutions, and a wide variety of technical and work force training programs. Our award-winning faculty members are passionate about teaching.

The College has placed an emphasis on upgrading facilities and technology to support student learning.

From the 1999 bond election, the College’s three campuses have a state-of-the-art Interactive Learning Center and Fine Arts Centers.

In May 2008, the College passed a $295 million bond referendum to further enhance student success. Through these funds, San Jacinto College will continue to upgrade facilities, especially in the areas of science and allied health. We are committed to upgrading our libraries and will create student one-stop shop resources so students have one place to go to get the services they need to be successful in college.

Students who attend San Jacinto College are offered a wide array of services, ranging from tutoring and advising at the Student Success Centers, to financial aid assistance from knowledgeable and well-trained financial aid advisors. Students are also provided career assessment testing and assistance with résumés and interviews for employment. San Jacinto College offers assistance with enrollment, and the special populations office provides assistance for students with certain disabilities and / or impairments.

Students come to San Jacinto College with various goals and aspirations, and we remain committed to their success.
