+Survey ResearchAsk Representative Population
Strengths: Supplies information about large populations
Weakness: representative sample may not be accurate; little to no control; cause and effect not determined; participant biases
+Naturalistic Observation
Strengths: good for forming initial hypothesis; little preparation needed
Weaknesses: No control; behavior may be altered by presence of observer, biased, no proof, not applicable to large populations
+Case Studies Study special case, hard to find
Strengths: Might be a very rare condition and so cannot study using quantitative methods; good for building hypotheses.
Weaknesses: Rare, not repeatable, no solid proof
Describe how research design drives the reasonable conclusions that can be drawn (e.g., experiments are useful for determining cause and effect; the use of experimental controls reduces alternative explanations).
Predict the validity of behavioral explanations based on the quality of research design (e .g ., confounding variables limit confidence in research conclusions).
