Althoughmostgekkotanlizardspecieshaveverylimitedareasofendemism,asmallnumberofspecies,includ-
ing representativesof thegekkonidgeneraHemidactylus,Lepidodactylus,Gekko,andGehyra,havebroaddistributionsthathavebeenachieved,inpart,throughhumanagency.Forthemostpart,suchintroducedgeckoshavebecomenatural-izedoutsideoftheiroriginalrangesonlyintropicalorsub-tropicalareas(Lever2003,Kraus2009).However,atleastonespecies,theMediterraneanGecko(Hemidactylus turcicus),hasbecomeestablished,albeitinverycircumscribedpockets,inareasoftheUnitedStatesthatexperiencemoreseverewin-tersthananyplaceintheirnativerange(NordenandNorden[1989]1991,Knight1993,Bauer2000). Throughthecombinationofincreasinglyrapidmove-mentofgoodsinternationallyandincreasedborderinspec-tions,evermoregeckosarebotharrivingaliveandbeingdiscoveredattemperateportsofentryaroundtheworld.InNewZealand,189recordsofexoticamphibianandreptileinterceptionsweregeneratedduringtheperiod1929–2000(119inthe1990salone),ofwhichgeckosaccountedfor101(Gilletal.2001).Manysuchstowawaystraveltrans-conti-nentallybyshipinmassivecontainersandmayeasilyescape
detection.Mostdiscoveriesoccuratorneartheirfinaldes-tination,whenshipmentsarebeingunpackedbybuyersorinspectedbycustoms,bordercontrol,orquarantineofficials.Forexample,Gekko monarchus,atropicalAsianspecies,wasfoundinafactorywarehouseinPortElizabeth,SouthAfrica(BauerandBranch2004)andaspecimenofG. hokouensiswasinterceptedbyU.S.CustomsandBorderProtectionper-sonnelatthePortofChamplain,NewYorkinashipmentofplasticlinersthatoriginated35daysearlierinQingdao,ShandongProvince,People’sRepublicofChina(BauerandBaker2008). Judgingbytheirestablishmentandnaturalizationaroundtheworld(Lever2003,Kraus2009),certainHouseGeckosofthegenusHemidactylusareamongthemostsuccessfulofallinvasivegeckospecies.Theircolonizationofextralimitalareasisassumedtohavebeenprimarilytheresultofacci-dentalintroductionsthroughgoodstransport,althoughinsomecasesreptile importersorbreedershavebeenimpli-cated(Meshakaetal.2004).IntheUnitedStates,atleastfive speciesofHemidactylushavebecomeestablished,H. turcicus,H. mabouia,H. garnotii,H. frenatus, and H. (for-merly Cosymbotus)platyurus.InsouthernFlorida,allarepres-ent,andthesegeckosinteractnotonlywiththenativefauna,butwithoneanother,withthedynamicschangingovertimeasnewerarrivalsbecomenaturalized(Meshakaetal.1994,2004;Punzo2005).WhilethesouthernstatesoftheU.S.havelongbeentherecipientsoftropicalcolonizersandareatgreatestriskfortheirestablishment,globaltradeandtransporthavemadeitpossibleforexoticspeciestousevirtuallyanyentrypointasaportalintotheUnitedStates.WeherereportontworecentrecordsofinterceptedHemidactylus spp.inthenortheasternUnitedStates. shipmentoflawnmowerparts.TheshipmentoriginatedinKaohsiung,Taiwanon18July2008andtraveledbyshipviaYantian,China(19July),HongKong(20July),Osaka,Japan(23July),andTokyo(24July)andarrivedinTacoma,Washingtonon1August2008.FromTacoma,theshipmenttraveledtoVancouver,crossingCanadabytraintoMontréal. Only three species of Hemidactylus are recorded forTaiwan(Ota1989,1991;Lueetal.1999;ShangandLin2008):H. bowringii,H. stejnegeri,andH. frenatus.Althoughsimilaringeneralappearance,onlyH. frenatuspossessesdorsaltubercles(Fig.1),whichareclearlyevidentonthespecimen. Specimen2.—AhatchlingHemidactylus(CAS250103;18.85mmSVL)wasfounddeadandpartlydehydratedbyanAgricultureSpecialist(U.S.CustomsandBorderProtection)atthePortofChamplain,NewYorkon4September2008.IthadenteredtheU.S.viatruckfromCanadainashipmentoftoysfromthePeoplesRepublicofChina.Detailsoftheship-ment’sportoforiginandsubsequentmovementsareunavail-able,butlikethefirstspecimen,itisbelievedtohavecrossedCanadabytrainfromVancouvertoMontréalbeforebeingtruckedacrosstheAmericanborder. MainlandChinasupportsfivespeciesofHemidactylus:H. frenatus,H. bowringii,H. aquilonius,H. stejnegeri,andH. brookii(Zhaoetal.1999,Zugetal.2007,McMahanandZug2007),thelastoftheseprobablyintroduced(ZhaoandAdler1993,Baueretal.2010).Theinterceptedspeci-menisatuberculate,aconditionseeninH. bowringii (Figs.2&3),H. aquilonius,andH. stejnegeri,buttheconfigura-tionofthechinshieldsexcludesthelastofthesespecies.Theothertwoareextremelysimilarinmorphology(McMahanandZug2007), and thedesiccated state of preservationof animal precludes unambiguous species identification.However,H. bowringiiisdistributedfromeasternIndochinathroughtheindustrializedregionsofsoutheasternChinaand
intoTaiwanandtheRyukyus(McMahanandZug2007),whereastherecentlydescribedH. aquiloniusoccurswestwardfromYunnanthroughBurmatoAssam,innortheasternIndia(Purkayasthaetal.2010).Basedonthecircumstancesofitstranslocation,weareconfidentthatthespecimenrepresentsH. bowringii.HatchlingsofH. bowringiimeasure18.5–19.8mmSVL(Lazell2002),thusgivenatransittimeofapproxi-mately30–35days,thespecimenprobablyhatchedfromaneggenroute,possiblyevenanegglaidenroute,givenanincubationperiodofapproximatelyonemonth(Karsenetal.1998,Lazell2002). AlthoughtheseverewintersofnorthernNewYorkStateorVermontwouldpreventestablishmentofthesetropicalspecies,otherAmericanportsofentry,particularlyalongtheGulfCoast,couldconceivablysupporttheestablishmentofeitherofthesegeckospecies. Hemidactylus frenatus hasalreadybeenestablished inmanyareasoftheword,includingmuchofthetropicalPacific,partsofSouthAmerica,andsouthernFlorida,oftenarrivingasacargostowaway(seeKraus2009andreferencestherein).Climate-envelopemodelingpredictsthatportionsofthesoutheasternUnitedStatescouldprovidesuitableconditionsforthisspecies,particularlyunderpre-dictedfutureclimate-changescenarios(Rödderetal.2008).Hemidactylus bowringiihasnotthusfarbeenidentifiedasaninvasivespeciesandhasnotbecomenaturalizedoutsideofitsnativerange,butitsabilitytothriveinadiversityofhabitats,fromwoodlandstourbansettings(Lazell2002),suggestsapotentialforestablishmentunderthecorrectconditions.ThenatureoftheinteractionsbetweenthesetwoHemidactylusareunknown,butH. frenatushasbeenknowntocompetitivelyexcludeavarietyofothergeckospecies,chieflyparthenoge-neticforms,inareaswheretheyhavebeenintroduced(Petrenetal.1993,PetrenandCase1996,BauerandSadlier2000,Rivasetal.2005),andthusmightbedetrimentalundersome

circumstances.AlthoughneitheroftheseHemidactylusspeciesisofcurrentconservationconcern,bothareusedasingre-dientsintraditionalmedicine(Jiang1983,Nguyen1993,Alvesetal.2008),andgiventhepopularityofthispractice(inbothdevelopedanddevelopingnations)andthemagnitudeofinternationaltradeinothergeckossoused(Bauer2009),prospectsexistforincreasedtrans-bordertraffickinginbothspecies. Thetwospecimensreportedhere,alongwithathirdpre-viouslydiscussedbyus(BauerandBaker2008)fromtheLakeChamplainregion,indicatethatthisareaservesasapoten-tialportalforaccidentallyintroducedgeckosintotheUnitedStates.Althoughcertainlynotasimportantarouteofentryasmuchlargerportsthatreceivedirectimportsfromaroundtheworld,theregionhasrecentlybecomeaconcernforalienreptilesfromtheAsia-Pacificregionduetofasterandmoreefficientglobaltransportationandtransshipment.Continuedmonitoringofthisandotherpotentialinvasionpathwaysisneedednotonlytopreventtheestablishmentofnewcoloniesofinvasivespecies,likeH. frenatus,butalsotoidentifythearrivalofspecies,suchasH. bowringii,which,althoughnotnowestablishedintheUnitedStates,havethepotentialtobecomeinvasive.
