NEWTON, Iowa – That Mother Na-ture has a cheeky sense of humor, doesn’t she? Throughout the week lead-ing up to the Iowa 300, we heard from somany members of the NTT IndyCar Se-ries community lamenting the sched-uled start time of Saturday’s “night”race — about how starting at 7:30 ETwould allow the setting sun to scorchdrivers’ vision, along with the fans inthe stands.

Mother Nature chuckled. Oh, youwant a night race? I’ll give you a nightrace.

Though no rain had fallen in Iowa forweeks, just minutes before green flagtime, Mother Nature opened up theskies and let forth a wicked thunder-storm and torrential downpour thatsoaked the track and delayed the start ofthe Iowa 300 for more than four hoursuntil the event became a twilight affair, with the green flag flying 10 minutes be-fore the stroke of midnight.

Despite the obvious headaches a de-lay of that caliber causes – i.e. dryingthe track, keeping fans safe/entertainedand IndyCar teams’ mad dash to booklocal hotel rooms and flights for theircrews in case the race was pushed toSunday – it all worked out for the best.

Well, maybe not for everyone. Surelythere were fans who couldn’t waitaround all night for the race to begin andleft disappointed. But those who didstay – and there were plenty (bravo,

Iowa fans) – were treated to one of thebest IndyCar races of the season.

“For all the fans who stayed out, weathered the storm literally, huge, huge thanks,” said third-place finisherJames Hinchcliffe. “I think it was wellworth the wait. Hopefully everybodythat did come and stayed for the raceenjoyed the show. Felt pretty excitingfrom where we were sitting. Imaginefrom the outside, too.”

From the outside, the race was thrill-ing.

Though the numbers, highlighted byhis 245 laps led, indicate Josef Newgar-den’s eventual victory was a foregoneconclusion, a slew of contendersemerged throughout the night lookingas if they might challenge him for thetop spot on the podium.

Dale Coyne Racing rookie SantinoFerrucci grabbed the early headlines byblitzing the field at the start, jumping upsix spots (12th to sixth) and appearing asif he might ambush the front-runners.

Newgarden’s Penske teammates,Will Power and pole-sitter Simon Page-naud, each looked strong as the threeran up front together early on. Ed Car-penter and his teammate Spencer Pigotquickly made a case that they were theclass of the pack, as they bounded upthe field into the top 10 in a heartbeat.

Hinchcliffe delivered a little deja vu,as he and his car seemed to grow strong-er and stronger as the race went on,making it seem like he might have a shotat going back-to-back at Iowa.

Finally there was Scott Dixon, whothrough some combination of sorceryand strategy managed to go from beinga back marker all race to closing the gap

to Newgarden in the final stint and fin-ishing second.

All in all, it was a thrilling race, andone fans who stayed up to watch on TVor stayed at the speedway to watch inperson deserved to see.

Did it make a significant differencethat it was truly a night race? I bet thefans – not sweating through theirclothes in the stands – thought so. Iknow Newgarden and Zach Veach did.

As we’ve learned through the firsttwo years of the universal aero kit, thehotter the temperatures, the tougher itis for drivers to hang on to these cars. With track temperatures down, Veachsaid, they were able to put on a showwith nearly 600 on-track passes.

“I think it would have been a much

worse race if it was in the day like it wassupposed to be,” said the young AndrettiAutosport driver, who picked up his bestfinish of the season (seventh). “With theconditions that we had, we gainedabout 200 pounds of downforce. Andhonestly, I think it was just right.

“It was still just low enough that wewere sliding around and we’re strug-gling and we can’t run in a pack at all.But it’s good enough that you can feelconfident to try and charge and passpeople. I felt like we had a good balance,so I’m thankful for Mother Nature forpushing things back.”

For Newgarden, it wasn’t so muchabout the quality of racing as it wasabout the majesty. There’s simplysomething special about Indy cars rac-ing at night, he said.

“I think night is better just becauseit’s always more exhilarating,” Newgar-den said. “The more races we can haveunder the lights with IndyCar would bebetter. They look better. It’s obviouslycooler in the summertime, easier on thefans, easier on us. I think it’s just a lotmore fun. It really brings the atmos-phere out and makes it exciting.”

I’d wager few fans disagree. Hopeful-ly, that means in the coming years wecan expect more of what we saw lateSaturday night and early Sunday morn-ing. Hopefully it won’t be left to MotherNature to make it so.

You’d have to believe that IndyCar,NBC and the speedway want to put thebest possible product in front of theirfans. At Iowa that means night racing.True night racing.

We saw its splendor Saturday night. Here’s hoping we see it again next year.

Believe it or not, Kevin Harvick en-tered the Monster Energy NASCAR CupSeries weekend winless in 2019. TheStewart-Haas Racing driver who woneight times last year and finished thirdin the championship race had opportu-nities to win but could never live up tohis nickname of “The Closer.”

Harvick made sure he closed out therace Sunday at New Hampshire MotorSpeedway, holding off Denny Hamlin, who caught him in the final two laps andbumped him twice before Harvickedged him at the line to win the Fox-woods Resort Casino 301.

“(Hamlin) got to me and tried to moveme out the way,” a relieved Harvick saidafter climbing out of his car. “I knew thatwas coming as close as he was. But I justhit the throttle down the back straight-away and I’m like, ‘You’re not getting un-der me again.’ He drove to the outside, and I waited until he got near me thenput a wheel on him.”

The victory was Harvick’s first in 21races since he took the checkered flag atTexas Motor Speedway in November.

Hamlin saw the battle the same wayHarvick did. “I wanted to just tap himthere,” Hamlin said, “but I didn’t want tocompletely screw him, I wanted to givehim a fair shot. Then he turned right andcame up on me coming out of the corner.I don’t know, I would have done thesame thing. ... It was a great race.”

Harvick, who won this race last year, benefited from a call by his crew chief. When many of the drivers brought theircars down pit road with 35 laps left fortires, Rodney Childers told Harvick tostay out. “It was really questionablewith how that was going to go,” Harvicksaid in victory lane. “It was a heck of afinish, closer than we wanted. Like Isaid, I would never have (made the call),but that’s why he’s the one on the box.”

Harvick earned his 46th Cup Serieswin and locked himself into the playoffs.

Erik Jones finished third, Ryan Bla-ney fourth and Matt DiBenedetto fifthfor his second top-five of 2019. MartinTruex Jr., Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch,Joey Logano and Brad Keselowskirounded out the top 10.

Larson’s woes: With 37 laps left, KyleLarson hit the wall for a second time.Larson brought his car to the garage.

Back-to-back yellows: Kyle Busch, who led 118 laps, got loose on lap 214 andslid into the wall, bringing out the cau-tion. On the ensuing restart, Larsontried to pass Alex Bowman on the insidebut spun out with the rear of his No. 42Chevrolet backing into the wall.

Stage 2: Aric Almirola, who stayed onthe track after a late-stage caution, wonthe segment ahead of Logano, Newmanand William Byron, who also didn’t pit.Kyle Busch, who took tires, was fifth.

Costly crash: Clint Bowyer got looseas cars raced three-wide on a restartwith six laps left in the second segmentand careened into Truex, sending Truex

into the wall and his No. 19 Toyota intoBowyer’s No. 14 Ford. Bowyer was eightpoints above the playoff cut line enter-ing the race. Both cars were able to fin-ish the second stage on the lead lap.

Wall banger: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.slammed hard into the Turn 2 wall onlap 136, ending his day. He cut his leftfront tire after side-by-side contactwith Erik Jones, and when the tire blew,Stenhouse lost control of his No. 17 Ford.Stenhouse, who is winless this year, wasone of a handful of drivers trying tocreep up into the 16th and final playoffposition. The Roush Fenway Racingdriver faces a likely must-win situation.“The 20 (of Jones) ran over us,” Sten-house said. “He’s been known to do thatto us a couple times now lately. He’ll getone coming his way before it’s over with,or at least before I’m through with it.”

Making contact: Daniel Suarez gotloose and made contact with DanielHemric in Turn 2, sending Hemric’sNo. 8 Chevy into the wall and the No. 41Ford of Suarez spinning. NASCARwaved the caution flag on lap 110, andthe field headed back down pit road.Jones and Alex Bowman made contacton pit road when Jones was pulling outof his pit box and Bowman was trying topull into his. Chase Elliott also had an is-sue on the pit stop. The No. 9 HendrickMotorsports crew was forced to lift thehood and replace a belt.

First stage: Kyle Busch won his sev-enth stage of 2019 after taking the leadon a restart following the first caution.
