Lent continues until the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy
Thursday, April 9. During Lent, the decoration of the altar with flow-
ers is not permitted, and musical instruments may be played only to
give necessary support to the singing. Exceptions include Laetare
Sunday, solemnities and feasts.

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu:
(1) Beginning this Sunday and for the next two
weeks, those preparing for baptism at the Easter
Vigil (“the elect”) undergo the scrutinies. These
rites for selfsearching and repentance are meant to
uncover, then heal, all that is weak or sinful in the
hearts of the elect; and to bring out, then strengthen
all that is good in them. The scrutinies are celebrated
in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan so the
priest includes a prayer of exorcism each week; this is to protect the
elect against temptation and to give them strength. These rites should
complete the conversion of the elect from their old way of life to a
new way of life life in Christ. Let us pray as a parish that our elect,
Penelopi Susan Berry and Emily Sue Brassley, may be given a spirit
of repentance, a sense of sin and the true freedom of the children of
God. The First Scrutiny is being celebrated this Sunday morning at
the 10:30am St. Margaret Church Mass. (2) Special events at Maine
parishes will highlight the Diocese of Portland’s celebration of the
Feast Day of Saint Patrick. The feast day holds special significance
in the diocese as Saint Patrick, along with Saint Jean Baptiste, is a
secondary patron of the diocese. In addition, Saint Patrick Church in
Newcastle was the first church in the country named for Saint Pat-
rick. Bishop Robert P. Deeley, whose parents immigrated to the U.S.
from Ireland, will celebrate Mass at 12:15pm March 17, at the Cathe-
dral. To view details on other gatherings planned to celebrate the
Feast Day of Saint Patrick around Maine, visit
www.portlanddiocese.org/feastsaintpatrick. (3) The bishop has set
into place seasonal protocols intended to insure the good health of
everyone during this flu and cold season. These continue to be in
effect until further notice. To summarize: parishioners who are sick
with any type of cold or flulike symptoms should stay home; all
ministers should make liberal use of antibacterial sanitizers; shaking
hands by hospitality ministers and by all is discouraged during the
Our Father and the Sign of Peace; the faithful are urged but not re-
quired to receive the Eucharist on the hand rather than on the tongue;
distribution of the Precious Blood is suspended. (4) Thirtytwo weeks
into our 5year Shepherds of Hope capital campaign, the amount
pledged/donated continues to grow weekly. Thus far, we have re-
ceived 742 gifts and pledges amounting to $1,440,166 as of March
10, or some 72% of our $2,000,000 goal. I am happy to report that
pledges or gifts have been recorded every week since the start of our
5year campaign. Please complete only one pledge card per donor,
even if you happen to give more than originally planned. Clearly
distinguish any donation to the campaign separately from other dona-
tions to the parish, perhaps by writing SOH (for Shepherds of Hope)
and simply noting your campaign ID or even your envelope number
on your envelope or check memo line. (5) A Reminder: In last
week’s bulletin, we printed in its entirety a letter from Bishop Dee-
ley to Maine Catholics. The letter concerns proposed legislation in
Augusta, LD 1613, that would have Maine taxpayers cover the cost
of abortions not covered by federal funds. The bishop wrote: “Maine
Family Planning (MFP) is asking for reimbursement of over $3 mil-
lion in Maine tax funds ($2 million of it on an ongoing basis) to pay
for MFP's refusal to comply with the Protect Life Rule which stops
federal funding to organizations that perform or promote abortions.
Maine abortion providers were the first in the nation to announce
they would not comply with the Protect Life Rule and now demand
that the Maine taxpayers pay instead. LD 1613 is an outrageous af-
front. Affordable, lifeaffirming health care is still available to all
women from Kittery to Fort Kent at federally qualified health care
centers.” Bishop Deeley concluded his letter with this call to action:
“I urge you to call your state senator at (207) 2871540 and your
state representative at (207) 2871400. State your name, where you
live and that you oppose LD 1613. If you do not know who your
senator or representative is, visit www.faithfulcitizenme.org to dis-
cover who they are. Speak out against these actions and let your
voice be heard before it is too late. Join me in praying that our oppo-
sition will stir the consciences of our elected officials into a more
active promotion of the defense of human life. (6) Below my weekly
message on this page of the bulletin, find a calendar of Lenten
events in Good Shepherd Parish. It is updated weekly. (7) Thank
You of the Week: To the sponsors and godparents who are accom-
panying our candidates for the Easter sacraments on their journey of
faith. Thank you!

Jokes Priests Can Tell: Volume 2 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: A
fellow came home from work to find his wife’s head bristling with
bright plastic curlers. In mock surprise he shouted: “What happened
to your head?” “Dummy,” she replied, “I set it.” He came back with
this wisecrack: “What time does it go off?”

Shepherds of Hope pledges ǀ For parishioners
who have not made a pledge, we need your help.
Please pray about taking that step. There are cards
at each church or the parish office to fill out or
take home for prayerful consideration. Bring
pledge to the office or mail to: Good Shepherd
Parish, 271 Main St, Saco.
Note ǀ Any checks/cash can be dropped in
collection basket, inside a blank envelope and must have a name and
ID number to receive credit. Check payments should be made out to:
Good Shepherd Parish; “Shepherds Of Hope” in memo line.

We have created a link with the Shepherds of Hope logo at
goodshepherdparish.us/. For assistance, call Amy Loring at 2823321,
ext. 105. WESHARE charges a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account: Fee is 10 cents per
transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50
donation will include a 50cent charge, plus 10 cents, for a total fee
of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of
$49.40.
* Credit, Debit Card Transactions: Fee is 3.25%, calculated as
follows: A $50 donation will include a 3.25% transaction fee and
amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net
donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the credit/debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we
prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding your source of
payment. Thank you for your generosity.
Shepherds of Hope Pledge Payments ǀ Please note that if you intend
to use ACH or credit card for payment and/or installments on pledge,
you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service,
WESHARE. Please do not include bank account information or cred-
it card number on pledge card. Go to the parish website to sign up
and make a payment or set up a recurring payment schedule. If you
decide to use WESHARE, mark that on your pledge card so we han-
dle the pledge properly.

donations in our Parish database when you use Offertory Envelopes.
All donations received through your envelopes are recorded to your
member account. We are happy to provide a donation record if
requested, however, we prefer handling these via email to reduce
administrative costs to the parish. Requests can be made as follows: ·

complete the information requested (most preferred way) or
*Email [email protected] with “2019 GSP
Contribution Statement” in the subject line. Also, include name,

WESHARE donors may selfserve from their account to obtain
giving/donation records directly without parish assistance. We will
do our very best to respond as quickly as possible. Be advised: All
Souls donations are nondeductible since a Mass is given for those
intentions.
To receive envelopes, please contact Amy (information above).
THANK YOU ALL in advance for your cooperation and generosity
