President’s Note June 28, 2017 We returned from North Bend NW Regional Meet Monday afternoon after very enjoyable five days of great weather and Model A events, some better than others considering minor breakdowns. Tom Ryan organized a driving poker game with prizes awarded at the end. The prizes were $50, $25, $25 gift certificates donated by Benny’s and $20 cash from entry fees. As we were leaving ODOT two cars were lost at the first turn, hard to explain, something about automatic pilot controls. After an hour, all was fine as we were a group again near Hwy 26. We traveled Hwy 99W and Hwy126 to Florence. As we approached Mapleton in a very wooded area two cars flamed out, mine and Bill Peden’s. My reserve gas can brought our car to Mapleton – about 26 miles, Bill not so lucky with no reserve can, so Roger returned with fuel. When we reached Florence at Corley & Nancy’s I discovered my alternator wasn’t charging my battery due to a wiring problem. We left the car there for the night on a charger and Mike Blick and I returned the next morning and found Corley had corrected the wiring problem. Thursday afternoon was spent at the Raffle and Hospitality rooms, those homemade cookies were very good. Friday was Swap Meet, Car Games and NWRG Meeting. After dinner, we completed our poker game, the winners were Leonard $50, Ron $25, Mike La Fleur $25 and Bob $20, thank you Tom & Benny. Saturday was a scenic drive and farewell dinner. Sunday, we traveled Hwy 101 North along the coast enjoying the scenery and our experiences. Somewhere North of Lakeside Leonard lost his exhaust pipe at the manifold, something about the brass nuts coming loose. Sunday night we stayed in Lincoln City and Monday morning drove Hwy 101 to Nehalem then Hwy 53 to Hwy 26 then stopped at Camp 18 for lunch, very enjoyable as our trip was coming to the end. Don’t forget the 4th of July starting at Roger Green’s.

Technical Notes

Model A Spark Rod Movement By Lynn Sondenaa

The spark control rod on the Model A is somewhat misunderstood. Today modern cars have computers that control the spark setting automatically. Before the computer, vacuum and centrifugal weights were used both individually and together to advance the spark. The Model A relies on the driver to control the spark advance. One must know why there is a spark control on cars. Here is a quick lesson on four stroke gasoline engines. (1) Intake – The piston moves down creating a vacuum. The intake valve opens allowing the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder. (2) Compression – The air/fuel mixture is compressed as the piston travels upward with both valves closed. (3) Power – The air/fuel mixture explodes forcing the piston downward with both valves closed. This is where the energy in the engine is created. This is also what the spark rod controls. Ideally the full force of the explosion needs to be pushing on a piston traveling in a downward direction. If not, you could get backfiring or excessive pressure on the top of the piston, rings, rod bearings and even the crankshaft bearings. So you want the spark timed to the downward direction. (4) Exhaust – The piston moves upward with the exhaust valve open forcing the burnt gases out of the combustion chamber. Here are some points to consider when advancing or retarding the spark control lever:

• A cold engine has slow combustion so more spark advance is needed. • A hot engine the combustion is faster so less spark advance is needed. • In a stock bore the combustion is faster (smaller space) so less spark advance is needed. • In a large bore the combustion is slower (larger space) so more spark advance is needed. • A stock cylinder head the combustion is slower (larger space) so more spark advance is needed. • A high compression head 5.5 or 6.0 combustion is faster (smaller space) so less spark advance is

needed. • At low speeds combustion is slower so more spark advance is needed. • At high speeds the combustion is faster so less spark advance is needed. • Heavy loads the combustion is faster so less spark advance is needed. • Old gasoline has lower volatility so combustion is slower and more spark advance is needed. • New fresh gasoline has high volatility so combustion is faster and less spark advance is needed. • If the spark lever is retarded too much it will cause the engine to overheat. • If the spark lever is advanced too much it will cause ignition knock. Fuel ignition too soon. • Climbing steep hills or grades less spark advance is needed. • Fully retard the spark lever when starting a cold engine. • Advance the spark lever 2 notches when starting a warm engine. • Fully retard the spark lever when setting the carburetor idling adjustment.

For normal driving, the spark lever should be ½ to ¾ the way down the quadrant. High speeds or flat driving the spark lever can be 7/8 to the full range of the quadrant, but as soon as hills arrive the spark lever must be retarded some to prevent power loss and ignition knocking. In conclusion, there are many factors that affect the spark control setting on the Model A. They are also interrelated. Do not be afraid to experiment with the spark control setting. You might discover more power and less overheating! Listen to your Model A, they usually tell you if something is not quite right.

MAFCA President's Page – Happy Begg June 2017

I recently came across a Ford Motor Company advertisement from a Good Housekeeping magazine, dated August 1930. It features a photo of a 1930 Roadster on a dock near the sea. Its caption was, “A joyous car for golden summer days.” It goes further to say, “Many are the delights of the Ford Roadster these golden summer days. Short the miles and pleasant because of its alert and sprightly performance, its safety and its easy-riding comfort. And what a joy it is to travel along the way with the top down, the blue sky overhead and the fresh, cool air brushing a rosy glow upon your cheeks... Many months of glorious motoring await your beckoning.” Wow, I’m sold! Let’s take out our Model A’s and go for a ride! Don’t forget to keep track of your miles for the 100K Miles in A Day Challenge! Travel with your Chapter or on your own - you pick the day! Send your mileage to Garth

Shreading, Membership Director, [email protected]. The long awaited Model A Coupe Book is now available for purchase, $24.95, through the MAFCA Store and online at www.mafca.com. This book was put together by some of our most dedicated members, Alex and Ruth Janke, Les Andrews and Garth Shreading, with assistance from many others. This is a superior compilation of all of the articles ever published in The Restorer on Model A Coupes, plus some written by Les Andrews and never before published, until now! The book has a terrific introduction written by Alex Janke, which includes all of the data sheets with the original fabric, paint, and stripe combinations available on the various Coupes. This book is a must for the Model A hobbyist! It is only available from MAFCA and our vendors, order yours, today! Over the years, the Model A Ford Club of America and your Board of Directors has been very successful in giving you, our membership the best that can be offered in the antique car hobby. Our membership is the largest of any single marque. I believe this is because we have many great membership benefits such as our award-winning magazine, The Restorer. Our magazine went from a fledgling cut and paste, black and white newsletter in 1957 to a sixty-six page, full color magazine today. Published six times a year, The Restorer, features articles about the Model A Ford, news of Chapters and activities, and other interesting articles. Along with The Restorer, MAFCA’s Directors, especially the Technical Director, are available to you via telephone, mail and email to answer your questions and guide you in the repair and restoration of your cars. Each year, MAFCA recognizes our members who have contributed their talents to MAFCA and the Model A hobby at the National Awards Banquet. Every even numbered year, we hold a National Convention, hosted by one or more Host Chapters in different places, gathering more than 1,000 members, and every odd numbered year, one or more Chapters host a National Tour for our members. We help to bring you together with others who have the same great love for the Model A Ford. The Board of Directors has always been prudent in the expenditure of our membership’s money, carefully investing along the way. As everyone is aware, the cost of doing business is an ever- increasing number, and we have arrived at an economic squeeze point. We have done the very best to give you the most for your dues that we could, cutting out non-essential expenditures and reducing costs of doing business where possible, yet offering great membership programs. It has been ten years since MAFCA has had a dues increase. In order to maintain and continue our great club, it is necessary to have one. Beginning with renewals for the 2018 calendar year, dues will be $50 for US membership, $60 for Mexico/Canada, and $68 for International memberships. Along with this increase, we will be including a bonus, the online edition of The Restorer with every membership. For our International members, we are offering a $50 membership for the online edition only. The online edition of The Restorer is a very valuable premium, as it is readable on your desktop and laptop computers, your tablets, and your smart phone - no matter where, around the world, you are! Up to three years, once online, will be available for your reference. Along with the First Fifty Years of The Restorer, available on flash drive, you will have a huge digital library of Model A articles available anywhere you travel! Remember, as a member of MAFCA, you are always welcome to attend any Board of Directors meeting, whether it is held in La Habra or elsewhere. Our next meeting will be held at The Gilmore Museum, home of the Model A Ford Museum, in Hickory Corners, Michigan, on September 15th beginning at 8am. I hope to see you there!

Northwest Regional Meet – Coos Bay, OR - Pictures

Here are some of the fun photos taken during the meet. On the journey to the Regional Meet, we experienced delays with some members getting lost, cars running out of gas, over-drives going out of service, a muffler coming loose, and finally a flat tire just two blocks from home. For those who were not able to attend this event, you missed a great time meeting new friends and enjoying fabulous weather on the coast.

Busy New Car Dealership Repair and Car Storage Department

Part of operating a new car dealership has always included having an up-to-date service department manned by expert mechanics, and back in time, indoor storage for new autos. The left-hand side of this staged image shows a service bay filled with a variety of different makes of automobiles and one truck in for service.

Back in the late-1920s, it was common to overhaul a vehicle’s engine, clutch, and transmission and some of the cars in the line-up here are apparently having this sort of service work performed on them. The roadster in the foreground is a circa-1925 Buick Six equipped with overhead valves and four-wheel brakes.

In the background is a number of new late-1920s touring cars which are stored in an interesting double stacked arrangement to save on floor space. Note that at least three of the cars have whitewall tires and the first car in the upper row has double wide whites. If any of our readers can positively identify these new automobiles, then the make of cars handled at this sales agency will be known.
