MOTORISTS using the Phalaborwa/Gravelotte road over the next few months must prepare themselves for lengthy stop-and-go’s after the contractor appointed to resurface and upgrade the road started on Monday.

That is the bad news. The good news is that

this treacherous road will now eventually be repaired and this will hopefully lead to less accidents and a safer trip between Phalaborwa and Gravelotte.

The President of the Phalaborwa Chamber of Commerce, Manie Kriel, on Monday confi rmed that the contractor was on site and

stop-and-go’s introduced. The Chamber was instrumental in joining forces with a special Forum to negotiate with Sanral on the urgent repair work required to upgrade the road.

“The stop-and-go’s will be frustrating for motorists, but it is essential and necessary to upgrade this road,” Kriel said. He also

confi rmed that the Forum is putting pressure on Sanral to also repair and upgrade the Phalaborwa/Mica road.

“Our access roads are not only critical to the economy of this area, but also poses a massive safety risk for all motorists,” Kriel added.

Give tender details, BaPM toldA LETTER demanding

details around the tender of BaPhalaborwa’s controversial property valuations was delivered by the sheriff of the court to the municipality on Friday.

According to sources the letter of demand was delivered to the Municipal Manager’s offi ce by the court offi cial on Friday. Should the municipality not reveal the requested details, legal action will be taken.

Several Phalaborwa community organisations demand details surrounding the controversial tender. Properties in and around Phalaborwa were valued at ridiculous and senseless amounts and ratepayers have been at strife with the municipality since the valuation role was made public for the fi rst time.

It is alleged that the successful tender to do the valuations was considerably higher than some of the other tenders submitted. It is also alleged that the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality ignored a directive from the Provincial government on which tender should be approved.

The Chamber scored a major coup when they secured Matthews Phosa as the guest speaker for the evening. Other celebrities in attendance will be well-known political analyst and commentator Dr Piet Croukamp and the CEO of Sacci South Africa, Alan Mukoki.

The focus will also be on several prestigious awards to be presented on the evening. It includes Phalaborwa’s Business Person of the Year, The secretary/receptionist of the year, newsmaker of the year and service excellence awards.

Here follows a brief profi le on Matthews Phosa:

Dr Mathews Phosa, an attorney by profession, is a leading fi gure in South Africa’s business and political world. Dr Phosa opened the fi rst black law practice in Nelspruit in 1981 and worked as a partner until 1985 when he was forced into exile. While in exile, he underwent political and military training, after which he became the Regional Commander for Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) the then military wing of the African National Congress (ANC) in Mozambique. He was one of four ANC members to be sent back to South Africa in 1990 to start the negotiation process with the former government where after he played a prominent role in the processes to establish a peaceful transition to a fully democratic South Africa.

Dr Phosa was appointed as the fi rst Premier of Mpumalanga Province in 1994 by the late President,

Mr Nelson Mandela. Following the

elections in 1999, he resigned his seat in parliament in favour of focusing his attention for a career in business. Dr Phosa re-entered the political arena in 2007 when he was elected Treasurer-General of the ANC until December 2012.

Dr Phosa is Chairperson of Special Olympics South Africa and Innibos Arts Festival .

Commercially Dr Phosa sits on a number of listed company boards (Value Group, Waterberg Coal Company, Jubilee Platinum, Renaissance Capital and Bauba Resources) as well as a number of unlisted entities (Mathews Phosa & Associates, SMEC South Africa, Hans Merensky Holdings and Du Toit Smuts & Mathews Phosa Attorneys – to name a few). He also sits as a trustee to the Afrikaans Handels Instituut (AHI).

Dr Phosa was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to transformation and empowerment at the 12th Oliver Empowerment Awards ceremony on 26 April 2013.

Dr Phosa attended the 25th anniversary celebrations of the signing of the Brazzaville Accord on Peace in Southern Africa in Brazaville in February 2014 where he was awarded the Congolese Order of Merit[i].

Dr Phosa attended the Congress of Vienna 2015 which saw a host of attendees from various countries around the world refl ect on global diversity – October 2015.

While in exile Dr Phosa taught Afrikaans at one of the schools in Mozambique. He has two anthologies in Afrikaans poetry to his name under the title “Deur die oog van ‘n naald” – some of which have been prescribed in the school curriculum for our national matric syllabus. Dr Phosa launched an English anthology called “Chants of Freedom” on 2 June 2015.

Non-payments on the verge of going to courtA legal battle between Foskor

and a group of contractors (as well as Foskor employees) over the alleged non-payment of bonuses is on the verge of going to the High Court of South Africa.

According to sources (who chose to remain anonymous) the group won the tender to build Foskor's Down Stream Flotation building (DSF). The building was completed ahead of time and allegedly more than R120 million under budget.

The builders then tried to claim their promised bonuses and the trouble started. "After saving them so much money one would think Foskor would be more than happy to pay out bonus money. Especially if you think that the bonus amount comes down to R2 million rand which is roughly one percent of the money saved," the source told the Herald. The disgruntled builders claim to have received only a small portion of the promised bonuses up to date.

According to a number of sources, Foskor refused to pay the bonuses as the employees and builders only applied for it after completion of the project. The Herald is in possession of several relevant documents. Firstly a document titled D-Stream Flotation Plant Replacement Project Project Staff Retention and Completion Bonus Scheme. This document clearly and in no uncertain terms, states that people

employed to work on this project can only apply for bonuses once the project has been completed.

The confl icted parties ended up in the Hoedspruit CCMA, where it was decided by the presiding offi cer that the CCMA did not have jurisdiction since the builders are no longer in the employ of Foskor.

Legal opinions have been taken aboard and (once again according to sources) the matter will be taken to the High Court of South Africa if Foskor does not have a change of mind.

Foskor's Abram Sibongile Ledwaba, Group Manager Corporate Affairs, responded to the Herald by way of an e-mail. "It appears that the persons referred to have embarked, or are about to embark, upon a litigation process through the High Court. Consequently, it would not be appropriate for us to discuss a sub judice matter through the media. However, it should in these circumstances, suffi ce to mention that the people concerned were paid some bonuses in or about April 2015, which the Company deemed appropriate given the prevailing circumstances at the time. It is therefore incorrect for the persons concerned to submit that they were not paid any bonuses at all. iHelix does;1) Genomic mapping (trait mapping) of game species with

novel next generation sequencing to pinpoint exotic traits and the genetic variants responsible for them. This will directly aid in targeted breeding strategies for the gaming industry to breed certain phenotypic traits and to identify their presence, absence, in newborns. This genotype by sequencing approach (GBS) is a novel approach in SA and is a new way of utilising advanced genetics to further the industry.

2) Disease Diagnostics by means of advanced quantitative PCR technology. This qPCR disease screening is completed and iHelix is fast tracking their SANAS accreditation. This will enable iHelix to provide certifi cation on both notifi able and controlled diseases endemic to the area as well as other animal diseases.

3) CE sequencing where they specialise in parentage assignments and DNA fi ngerprinting of animals. This work is being done on the nucleic genomic DNA of the animals and not the commonly used mitochondrial DNA of animals. Mitochondrial DNA from e.g. hair samples only have the mother compliment of DNA which makes parentage assignments challenging. More so, these commercial kits for assigning/and or confi rming parentage in the game industry relies on markers compiled from animal species with known

genomes such as bovine, ovine or avian, but not related to game. Here at iHelix we work solely on the animals’ in question individual genomic (nucleic) DNA and present a specie specifi c marker analyses for both parentage and individual fi ngerprinting. In so doing, customers have real time access to the raw data themselves and are informed directly on how the assignments happen. This increases confi dence in results, minimises errors and time delays.

Most recently iHelix successfully used this in house developed DNA technology to match isolated Rhino horn DNA to a variety of other biological specimens sampled from the animal. They developed a technique that can make use of biopsy darts, hair roots, tissue samples, blood samples and mouth swabs and matched it with fi ngerprint accuracy to the rhino horn DNA with as much as 400 markers per animal. This has far reaching implications as this enables iHelix to setup a fi ngerprinting database of all animals tested at the facility. The identity of any animal can be verifi ed within 24-48hrs from sampling by means of something as simple as a mouth swab. This will also be of great use at animal auctions to identify that the individual animal from seller en-route to auction, sold and upon arrival at purchasers farm, is indeed the same animal with the same identity. More so, insurers of exotic game can make use of this service to accurately verify the identity of an animal.

Limpopo MX Series kicks offWhat a great start of the Limpopo MX Series held on

February 27.This was the fi rst round of six events to take place in

Limpopo. The CRC team did an excellent job in preparing the track and with the help of extra rain helped to make the track even more technical and grippy.

"We had riders from all over Limpopo as well as Gauteng. Kassim Hassim won the 50 cc race and was smoking-fast on the junior track, CRC also introduced a Novice class for beginners and Mia Terblanche showed some real talent as well as her rival Pieter Keartland," according to Marcus Filip.

Filip says the 85 cc of Tienkie Filip was unstoppable and took the win but had to work hard as Ian Rudiger was short on his tail.

Mark Carty on his number 24 KTM came back from injuries sustained in the 2015 season, but was as fast as ever and won the Pro Mini class out right. "The 125 class

was won by Ryan Terblanche and he dug deep to win his three heats.

The Erasmus brothers Duan and Coert gave the spectators real value for money as they were battling for 3rd position and put up a great show on their new Yamaha 250's in the Mx 2 class which was won by Tyrone Beverly," added Filip.

Filip further said the old ballies had their handful as they struggled in the muddy conditions, but as always the Raubenheimer brothers came out tops in their class.

"The Mx 1 class was won by Janneman Potgieter a newcomer to the Mx1 class.

Kingfisher helps community

On Friday, March 4 , Kingfi sher Private School Intersen Phase had their community project that included the boys from Akanani, Place of Safety to come and enjoy an afternoon fi lled with fun and water play.

Every grade had an appointed task to do to make the project

a huge success. The Grade 4 learners packed the lucky packets, the Grade 5 learners helped to clean up,

the Grade 6 learners made little cards and the Grade 7 learners provided safe water play.

Each grade has a community project, each year.

Die dag het maar natterig begin, maar dit het nie die skuts gekeer om goeie tellings aan te teken nie. Daar is ook ‘n paar minder goeie tellings ingedien, maar dit is niks wat nie reg gestel kan word met ‘n bietjie oefening nie. Die langer afstande toets die skuts se vermoë om die wind en lugspieëling te lees en die nodige verstellings te doen. Die V-kol area op die rooijakkals is net 11 cm2 groot en oor ‘n afstand van 300 meter is dit baie klein. Die teikens waarop geskiet word het nie ‘n spesifi eke mikpunt nie en die skut moet die dier goed genoeg ken om te weet waar om te mik.
