...to our autumn edition of CARE in Action.

Inside, we share with you the stories of some of the people you’ve helped. Your generosity is reaching families around the world, from Turkey (page 7) to Rwanda (pages 8-9). Without you, none of this would be possible so I want to thank you for your ongoing support.

I particularly want to thank you for supporting our Help Her Live, Learn and Earn campaign earlier this year. As the project kicks off in northern Tanzania, I’ll make sure to share with you just how much your support is making a difference.

As always, I hope you can see just what a difference your support is making. You are the reason we can help people when they need us the most.

Best wishes

Caroline Tatum Senior Supporter Care Officer

On the cover: Eric and Olive are married farmers living in Northern Province, Rwanda, with their four children. As part of CARE’s Indashyikirwa project - which is funded by UK taxpayers through UK aid, and focuses on preventing gender-based violence - they received couples’ training. Eric said: “There’s a lot we have done together since we started sharing roles and responsibilities. We wish we had known this before, as things are looking much better.” (Image front cover ©CARE/Peter Caton)

Thanks to supporters like you, we can provide women in Jordan with vocational and business skills training. We’ve helped 2,000 women, all of whom have been affected by conflict, poverty and discrimination, with the knowledge and expertise they need to start their own business or improve existing ones.

CARE around the world

3. Bangladesh On the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar, a refugee camp has become the site of the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. Over 700,000 refugees have fled violence in Myanmar, seeking safety in Bangladesh. Thanks to you, we’ve been working in the refugee camp since the beginning of the crisis providing emergency assistance including shelter, medical support, clean water and food. 1. Uganda

Since violence erupted in South Sudan in 2016, over one million people have fled to safety in Uganda, including Joyce. Despite being forced to leave her home, Joyce looks to the future with hope. With CARE’s support, Joyce formed a women’s group in a refugee camp. The group has now started an embroidery business. Joyce said: “Over the past year, we have worked together and now we stand upright because of the support CARE has given us. Together, we’re moving on... to a better day.”

In the past year, you’ve helped support vulnerable families during some of the world’s worst crises. Some of these crises go under-reported but your support shows families that they’re not alone and they’re not being forgotten.

2. Yemen In Yemen, CARE is rehabilitating water sources and building durable water tanks as well as giving advice on hygiene. One mother (pictured left with her children), told us: “Before the water well was built in our village, my children had only half a glass of water a day. Now I can give them enough to drink and use the water for daily hygiene routines. CARE taught us how important it is to wash hands regularly and provided us with a CARE package including hygiene items. Now we have soap, sanitary pads, diapers and much more.”

Help Her Live, Learn and Earn in northern Tanzania CARE organises festival for refugee children

Our Help Her Live, Learn and Earn campaign was an incredible

opportunity to ensure women and girls have the chance to live up to their full potential. With your fantastic support, we raised over £540,000 which will be doubled by the UK government as part of UK Aid Match.

The matched funds will support women farmers in the Same District in northern Tanzania, where frequent droughts are making it increasingly difficult to grow crops and earn a living. But thanks to you, we will support 2,460 small-scale farmers and their families by giving them the training they need to improve their farming and increase their resilience to climate change.

Kate Dresser, CARE International’s Programme Management Coordinator for Africa, said: “We’re so excited to start this project. We’ll be helping farmers increase their farming yields by 20%, giving them more food to eat with better nutritional value and a surplus to sell.”

CARE organised the first Kilis Children’s Festival, along with the local municipality, where more than

1,000 children and parents from Syria and Turkey came together. In a city that currently has more Syrian refugees than Turkish nationals, integration with the host community is extremely important.

Hassan, a 10-year-old Syrian refugee, said: “This afternoon has been great fun. I have been painted as a cat, and I went on the slides and played with everyone.

I do have Turkish friends. I go to school with Syrian children and Turkish children and I am learning Turkish. It’s good to live here in Kilis, and to play with my friends.”

With your help, since 2014 we have offered emergency assistance to Syrian refugees in Turkey, including food and supplies to families as well as helping women to be treated more fairly within their communities.

Creating safe women’s spaces in Rwanda

Consolee lives in Muzane District, Northern

Province, Rwanda with her husband.

She was trained as part of the CARE’s Indashyikirwa project, which is funded by UK taxpayers through UK aid and focuses on preventing gender-based violence (GBV). For the last three years Consolee has been part of the CARE team, working in one of the project’s women’s spaces. She offers support and advice to women experiencing GBV and runs dialogue sessions where men and women can discuss gender and relationship issues.

Consolee said: “The space is a place for women to come and record GBV – that wasn’t happening in the past. Women would get raped or sexually abused, but they wouldn’t talk about it. Ever since they started being vocal about

these issues, people are now more open to reporting GBV. They understand it is not something they should keep quiet about. I enjoy seeing people benefitting from the advice they get when they come to us, and seeing families solve their conflicts.”

It also helped Consolee in her personal life. Her husband attended a session to understand the work his wife would be doing and learnt what impact his excessive drinking was having on Consolee. Since then, their relationship has improved; they’ve been able to buy a plot of farming land and send their children to school.

“I am very proud of what I do. It has changed my life and my relationship with my husband. I like interacting with different people in my community. I feel proud that people are free to come and talk to me.”

Robert and Jean Newton supported CARE for over 25

years. Here, with the words of their son, Paul, we remember and thank them for the difference they made to the lives of people in some of the world’s poorest countries.

“Robert and Jean Newton were married in 1957 and their story was a fairytale. From a young age, they only had eyes for each other and were extremely happy together. They were keen supporters of various charities and became regular donors to CARE International in 1992. When Robert passed away in 2008, Jean continued her support. In early 2018, when Jean followed Robert, we’re sure

she would have been pleased to know that donations to CARE International were invited at her remembrance service to supplement her own contributions to this fabulous cause.”

Next September we will be taking our first all-women cycle group across Vietnam and Cambodia and we want you to join us! We’ll cycle 450km from the metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City to the spectacular Angkor Wat, taking in incredible scenery along the way. You’ll find out about CARE’s approach to tackling sexual harassment and violence against women at work and spend an afternoon in Phnom Penh meeting a group of women who have been supported by this project.
