  •   Project Steps

    1. Gather your materials.

    2. Print & cut pattern pieces provided - Pages 1 thru 3. a. Pages 2 & 3 should be cut out to 3 total pieces. Line up the A’s & the B’s on the

dotted lines. From the three pattern pieces, you should end up with one long pattern piece that will be placed on the fold of the fabric.

    3. Place the pattern pieces on your fabric & mark around each. You’ll cut one piece with your main fabric & one with your coordinating lining fabric.

Pro-Tip: Be aware of how you place your pattern pieces and your fabric to trace, if you have a directionally based fabric.

    4. Sew a basting stitch with a ⅜” seam allowance along one long side of each of the side cap pieces. (Please reference the pattern piece for where the basting stitch ends)

    a. Basting stitch length set at 4.5. Pro-Tip: Basting Stitch: A straight stitch, sewn with long stitches & unfinished ends. A basting stitch is temporarily placed & is removed after your project is complete.

    5. Fold the side cap piece in half to find the center & mark with a pin or marking pen.

    6. Fold the top cap piece in half lengthwise to find the center at the top of the curve & mark with a pin or marking pen.

    7. Pin both of the center points together.

    8. Line up the flat edge corner of the top cap piece to the point of the side cap piece where your basting stitch starts & ends. Hold in place with pins. Work your way around from one pic to the other lining up your raw edges & pinning in place.

    a. As you work your way around, you’ll need to pull the bobbin thread from your basting stitch to have the curve line up without having excess fabric & wrinkles along your raw edge that is pinned in place.

    9. Sew around the edge you just pinned using a ⅜” seam allowance.  ● Pro-Tip: Back stitch at the beginning & end to lock your stitches in.  ● Pro-Tip: Remember to remove your pins prior to sewing over them to avoid

breaking a needle or having the needle no longer being aligned to the center.

  •

     10. Snip around the edge of the curve to have smoother edge seams when flipped right

    side out.

    11. Repeat steps 4 through 9 for the lining piece.

    12. Once complete, turn the outer cap piece right side out. Line up the outer cap lining & the inner cap lining raw edges with the right side of the fabric touching.

    ● Pro-Tip: When lining up your seamed edges make sure that the seams allowances go in opposite directions for ease of sewing over them.

     13. Use your marking pen to mark a 3” opening that you will leave unsewn for flipping right

    sides out.

    14. Sew around the edges of the entire cap starting & stopping at the marked line. ● Pro-Tip: Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end to lock the

stitches in. This also helps when turning your fabric, so that you don’t accidentally rip the stitches out.

    15. Snip around the edges of the cap seam to have smoother seam edges when flipping right side out.

    16. Flip the cap right side out through the 3” opening left unsewn.  ● Pro-Tip: A chopstick is great to help push out the tight edges & points of the

    ties.

    17. Take the cap to your ironing pad & press the seams at the edge. This will give the cap a crisp edge to topstitch around.

    ● Pro-Tip: You also have the opportunity at this time to press the open hole seam edges towards the inside to give you a straight edge when topstitching.

    18. Topstitch around the entire base of your scrub cap making sure to catch your turning edge seam that you pressed towards the inside.

    19. Tie the cap comfortably on your head & mark with a marking pen where you would like to have your mask straps rest above your ears. We set ours at the top point of our ears.

    20. Remove the all purpose presser foot & place the button foot on your machine.

    21. Select the button stitch on your machine. If you don’t have a button stitch, select your zigzag stitch.

*OR You could hand sew the buttons into place if you choose.

    22. Lower the feed dogs or place the plastic cover (darning plate) that is packaged with most SINGER® sewing machines over your feed dogs.

    ● Pro-Tip: This keeps your fabric from progressing while you sew the button into place.

    23. Place one button on one side of your scrub cap where you marked. Line up the buttonholes with the inner area of your button foot.

    24. Line up the needle with one of the holes on the button, turn the hand wheel toward yourself to make sure that it will line up accordingly & that the needle will NOT hit the button.

    25. Turn the handwheel towards you until the needle lowers into the fabric through the buttonhole & comes back up. It should then move over to the opposite hole of the button. This is where you can adjust your stitch width to line up with the center of the other hole of the button. You’ll repeat the same process to verify that the needle will go through that hole without hitting the button.

    26. Once you’ve verified that the needle will NOT hit the button you can press the foot pedal to allow the machine to sew back & forth into the holes sewing down the button. We did this about 10 times back & forth.

    27. Repeat steps 23 through 26 for the other button.

    28. Your scrub cap is complete!
