Welcome to Trailside Discovery
Come and join us for a summer of fun! We’ll kick off our 35th year on May 30, 2017 with a variety of programs for children and youth ages 4 to 16. Located at the Campbell Creek Science Center, with well over 750 acres of forest and creek access, Trailside Discovery Camp off ers a big backyard that’s perfect for adventure, exploration, learning, and fun! We have extensive hiking trails, wildlife, and lots of camp fun!

Th is year we’re excited to introduce family programs! We’ll be off ering special ½ days at camp for parents of pre-schoolers, and have a calendar of family e vents from June through August to get you outdoors with your kids. Check out page 5 in this brochure for more information, and we’ll update trailsidediscovery.org as we get closer to summer.
Our dedicated staff of high school students, college students, and teaching professionals balance teaching and learning with traditional elements of camp. Trailside Discovery packs a summer of outdoor adventure into each week. Our fun-fi lled educational programs are described throughout this guide. So take a few minutes and choose the adventure that is best for your child. At Trailside Discovery, summer fun awaits.
Trailside Discovery is a private, non-profi t program of Th e Alaska Center Education Fund, which aims to provide environmental opportunities for young Alaskans of any age. Our unique “kid-to-career” approach connects with youth of all ages to build a movement of young Alaskans with the skills, knowledge, connection and inspiration to become future conservation leaders.

Preschool Programs for Ages 4-5Patient, enthusiastic instructors lead games, stories, and hands-on activities, encouraging campers to interact positively with the environment and each other. Programs aim to develop your children’s senses, motor skills and relationships as they discover the outdoors and personalities of fellow campers. We no longer offer a nap hour but a quiet time reading hour after lunch. Two staff per 10–12 Campers. Cost: $275 per week or sign up for any four weeks for $1072.00 ($268 each week).

Day Programs for Ages 6-7Naturalist instructors lead small groups, teaching the basics of ecology, geology, natural history, nature crafting, environmental stewardship, and outdoor survival skills. Staff encourages positive social interactions among campers through group activities and exploration. Fully packed, active days prepare campers for longer trips to come in future Trailside summers! Two staff per 14–16 campers. Cost: $275 per week or sign up for any four weeks for $1072.00($268 each week).

June 17thFamily Canoeing, Kayaking, & Paddle Boards (Ages 6 & UP)Goose LakeBring your family out for this Saturday of sunshine, splashes, and smiles. The water rodeo will begin at 10:00am and continue until 3:00pm. Trailside Discovery will supply canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards at Goose Lake. Families will be able to utilize equipment provided by Trailside at no cost.
July 20thTrailside Discovery’s 35th Birthday PartyCampbell Creek Science CenterParents, grandparents, campers of all ages; come one, come all! Join Trailside Discovery for our 35th birthday celebration. From 4:30pm – 6:30pm at the Campbell Creek Science Center there will be carnival games, a bounce house, face painting, a creek study and—most importantly—cake and ice cream!
July 29thFamily Fat Tire Bike Ride Campbell Tract (Ages 9 & UP) Abbott Loop ParkJoin this Fat Tire Bike FRENZY from 10:00am – 3:00 pm. Trailside Discovery will provide fat tire bikes for ages 9+ to take off and tear up trails in a free ride area set up at Abbott Loop Park. Campers will learn general bike safety, passing etiquette, and how to be wildlife aware on trails. If you own a fat tire bike don’t leave it at home to gather dust—join us and crush the Trails!
August 4thAK Native Culture KeepersTrailside’s AK Native Culture Keepers classes for ages 4-9 will be holding a potlach on Friday August 4th and parents are invited! Students will lead activities such as beading and dancing. Native Elders will be present to share their knowledge, emphasizing Alaskan art and culture.

Alaska Quest Trips I – Ages 8-9Our introductory trips are designed for campers who are ready to spend extended time away from the walls and windows of everyday life. After two days of checking gear, reviewing equipment, team building, wilderness safety, practicing basic skills, and Leave No Trace camping skills, campers head out for a three-day campout and discovery adventure. Alaska Quest Trips III – Ages 12-14Longer trips for teens combine backcountry skills with natural history as campers further develop their outdoor skills. After one day in camp practicing skills and preparing gear, campers leave on Tuesday morning and do not return until Friday afternoon. Trips are designed for campers with prior experience. Two staff per 10–12 campers. Cost – All trips are $475 No discounts available.

Training Programs for Ages 14-16We designed these courses for campers who are ready to share their passion, experiences, and skills with others. This course develops their leadership skills, preparing them for future jobs in the fields of environment, education, and outreach. Guest presenters join our specialized instructor team to lead this program. Graduates may be asked back for an additional week as a TDC staff volunteer in training. Cost – $275 per week.

Fees, Refunds, and Payment Arrangements:There is a mandatory $25 deposit for each class which will go toward your overall bill, along with a nonrefundable registration fee of $40 per child. Full class payment is due at least seven days prior to the start of camp. If full payment is not received by the beginning of camp, parents will be automatically charged the remaining balance to their credit card on file. If you have signed up for a payment plan you are still subject to the cancellation policy, and responsible for any fees that correspond. Payment plans are available during registration.
A 50% refund will be granted to those withdrawing from a course up to two weeks prior to the beginning of the course. Trailside Discovery will refund the full course fee (excluding nonrefundable deposits and the registration fee) for students who are unenrolled between January 3, 2017 and April 1, 2017. Or if the program is cancelled and space in a similar program cannot be accommodated. Any account sent to collections will be charged an additional 38% of their overdue balance.

After Care Late Fee Policy:Parents who arrive after 5:30 p.m. will be charged the following fees per student:
