Dr. Kelly O.P. Goodwin , of 50 I N. W. 26th St., pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, and the former pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Mocksville, died July 7 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Washington, D.C., and attended the public schools of Steelton, Penn. He held a bachelor's degree from Howard •University in Washington, a master of divinity degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and a doctor of divinity degree from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. Additional post gradu- ate studies and training were undertaken at Temple University, Virginia Union University, the Urban Training Center of Chicago, and at North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Pastoral Care. Licensed to preach in 1935 and ordained in 1938, Dr. Goodwin his ministry as a student minister at Friendship Baptist Church Ijn Washington. Prior to accepting the pastorate of Mount Zion Baptist. Church in Winston-Salem in 1946, he was the pastor of Zion Baptist Ch urch in Readjng, Pa. As the third pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Dr. Go odwin led the membership through a pronounced pe riod of programming, growth and development, including its relo- cation from the old church site· of 47 years to its present location at Ninth and File Streets. After 31 years as pastor of Mount Zion, he tetired from its pulpit in 1977, and continued his senior pastorate at Cedar Grove Baptist Church until his subsequent retirement from that post. In the community he was a past commissioner and vice chairman of the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, former chaplain at Winston-Sa le m State University, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and member of the Winston-Salem Ministers' Conference, as well as many denominational affiliations at the local, state and national levels. He was a Heritage member of the NAACP. He is survived by his devoted wife, Emmalene Hart Goodwin, of the home: a goddaughter, Dr. Barbara K. (Garret) Phillips, of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Sherrie Goodwin, of Richmond, Va., and Terry Hart Lee, of Washington, D.C.; one nephew, Rotan Lee, of Philadelphia; a brother-in-law, Dr. Rotan (Gracie) Lee, of Philadelphia; several cousins; dear family friends, Shirley Cloud, Ellabelle Tillman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gadson, the Jones and Sales families. the 26th Street neighbors; loving caregivers; The Mount Zion Baptist and Cedar Grove Baptist Church families; and many friends. Funeral services were held at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Inhumation followed at Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev KOp Goodwin has been named the 1989recij)ient of the award and will be recognized at the NAACPs annual Freedom Fund Banquet Friday evening at the convention center

Goodwin a long-time pastor and commuDlty activist was stunned by the news of his selection for

Since coming to Winston-Salem in 1946 Dr Goodwins leadership has added strength and confishydence to many organizations and community efforts Neely said In addition to his work with the church and his rtbullbullmy community activities Dr Goodwins pershysonal commitment and influence were major factors in

Forsyth Countys efforts to successfully transition to integration in housing health care and education He has always been willing to stretch his time and energy and we believe he exemplifies leadership middotqualifies at their frnest

A native of Washington DC Goodwin is the son of a Baptist minister He ~tended Howard University and entered the schools graduate program in religion after completing his undelJ8duate studies Goodwin said that he never really considered becoming a minisshyter until he was well into his college years

HI fought it as long as I could he said I went into the ministry as I graduated from college at Howard I went to the graduate school of religion at Howanl for a year I was chosen to serve at a church in Pennsylvania for a summer and I went to stay over the summer I served in pulpit supply I went to stay from June to August and I ended up staying for more thanmiddot 10 years I like them they like me so I stayed

After leaving Pennsylvania Goodwin came to Winston-Salem to continue his ministry He served at the church for more than 30 years and retired in 1978

TheDuring that time he also served as chaplain at WinstonshytheSalem State University and as pastor of Cedar Grove

Baptist Church in Mocksville Goodwin still preaches has two Sundays a month at a Davie County church cam

Thats the way my life has been I was brought up as a ministers son who felt that everyone should give baclc to the community some of what they received Goodwin said Thats something I have always felt strongly about

Since the day he arrived in Winston-Salem and joined a workers strike at RJ Reynolds Goodwin has been outspoken about civil rights in the city He is

happy to report that things are better for the cityS AfroshyAmerican population but not convinced that all is as it should be

Winston-Salem has changed signiflC8lltly Pan of the reason we have had changes in Winston-Salem is largely because folks who are the powers-that-be have rolled with the punches said the 77-year-old Goodshywin Places like Reynolds Hanes and Sara Lee have helped They saw things that needed to be seen and they have done something about things that needed to be done This is a long way from heaven but weve come a long way I hope we will continue to make progress We have segments of racial prejudice of the

In her annual State of the Dream speech at Ebenezer on Sunday King urged Amerishycans to join a national march on Washington this summer to awaken the slumberiqg conshyscience of our democracy The march will mark the 30th anniversary of her husbands I have a dream n speech on Aug 28 1963

King said she finds hope in the new Demoshycratic administration We go back to Washshyington with high hopes that the new leadershyship will sound the (death) knell for the age of apathy and indifference aud ring in a new era of healing hope and opportunity

This years Sara LeeCharles McLean Community Service Award goes -- coincidentaUy -- to McLeans fonner next door neighbor and a virtual legend in the community

The Rev KOp Goodwin has been named the 1989recij)ient of the award and will be recognized at the NAACPs annual Freedom Fund Banquet Friday evening at the convention center

Goodwin a long-time pastor and commuDlty activist was stunned by the news of his selection for

we honor Im thrilled at this It was totally unexpected said

Goodwin the fonner pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church They called and asked for some information for some kind of selection committee and I sent it to them But I was completely surprised that I was the one selected

Joseph P Neely senior vice president of Sara Lee Corp said that Goodwins extensive history of service qualified him for the award

Since coming to Winston-Salem in 1946 Dr Goodwins leadership has added strength and confishydence to many organizations and community efforts Neely said In addition to his work with the church and his rtbullbullmy community activities Dr Goodwins pershysonal commitment and influence were major factors in

Forsyth Countys efforts to successfully transition to integration in housing health care and education He has always been willing to stretch his time and energy and we believe he exemplifies leadership middotqualifies at their frnest

A native of Washington DC Goodwin is the son of a Baptist minister He ~tended Howard University and entered the schools graduate program in religion after completing his undelJ8duate studies Goodwin said that he never really considered becoming a minisshyter until he was well into his college years

HI fought it as long as I could he said I went into the ministry as I graduated from college at Howard I went to the graduate school of religion at Howanl for a year I was chosen to serve at a church in Pennsylvania for a summer and I went to stay over the summer I served in pulpit supply I went to stay from June to August and I ended up staying for more thanmiddot 10 years I like them they like me so I stayed

After leaving Pennsylvania Goodwin came to Winston-Salem to continue his ministry He served at the church for more than 30 years and retired in 1978

TheDuring that time he also served as chaplain at WinstonshytheSalem State University and as pastor of Cedar Grove

Baptist Church in Mocksville Goodwin still preaches has two Sundays a month at a Davie County church cam

He said that he has seen some changes in churches Indu over the years but their basic function has remained the Hic same NAI

1cross the country - from Phoenix where the legislature recently recognized the holishyday to Atlanta where Kings widow called for world peace Today on Martin Luther Kings birthday we call for a moratorium on violence Coretta Scott King said at Ebenshyezer Baptist Church where King and his father were co-pastors We call on a multishycultural revolution of values in our nation and in our community

In her annual State of the Dream speech at Ebenezer on Sunday King urged Amerishycans to join a national march on Washington this summer to awaken the slumberiqg conshyscience of our democracy The march will mark the 30th anniversary of her husbands I have a dream n speech on Aug 28 1963

King said she finds hope in the new Demoshycratic administration We go back to Washshyington with high hopes that the new leadershyship will sound the (death) knell for the age of apathy and indifference aud ring in a new era of healing hope and opportunity

Hundreds marched from the legislative building in Raleigh to Memorial Auditorium where politics and religion mixed freely in a celebration of Kings birthday A little short walk is nothing compared to the many miles he walked for freedom and for justice for the people said AI Roberts 35

Gov Jim Hunt invoked Kings memory to support his programs for children

We must commit ourselves to making this state a place where every child will have good health care Hunt said Let us work to provide quality early childhood education

Every child must be treated as Martin Luther King would want us tQ do Ifwe will do that my friends we will truly honor this great leader and will do the work that God put us on this planet to do Hunt said~

House Speaker Dan Blue said that the new Democratic administration gives him hope too That makes me truly believe that weare getting closer to Martin Luther Kings dream Blue said But were not there by any means What matters now is our willingshyness to stand together as a country in this renewal of American spirit
