A question was asked, if that is the case, would the annual assessment go down? The answer was that since Greatwood is an aging community, this money would be used to shore up our infrastructure and the HOA assessments would have to increase according to need. 6) Question about the property being developed at front of Greatwood. The publication of the Greatwood Community Association, Inc. August 2015

Quarterly Neighborhood Rep Meeting ReportThe Quarterly Meeting of the

Neighborhood Reps was held

at the Greatwood Golf Club on

Wednesday, July 1st at 7:00 pm.

The meeting was called to order

by HOA President, Jack Molho. The

financial Report was presented by

HOA Treasurer, Chip Smith.

Points of discussion were as follows:

1) Currently, there are no concrete

plans for the 3 acre tract owned by the

MUD across from Campbell Elementary.

There should be something to present

in several months. The HOA and MUD

are working to accomplish this. It’s

important to have a plan so that this

property remains part of Greatwood

and does not go to the City of Sugar

Land once annexation takes place and

the MUDs are gone. This property

will remain private for the use of

Greatwood residents only.

2) Discussion about annexation into

Sugar Land: annexation is set for 2017-

2018. When Greatwood is annexed, the

MUDs will be dissolved and Sugar Land

will take over the delivery of water

for Greatwood. This, of course, will

be using the present MUD facilities. A

question was asked about the cost of

water. Would it be higher? At this time

there is no answer to this question, but

some thought it might be lower as we

will not be paying a MUD tax.

Will annexation be good for our

property values? Greatwood will

benefit from city services, including

police. There is some indication that

taxes may be less.

3) Regarding security: when annexed,

there will be 44 more policemen

assigned between Greatwood and

New Territory.

There was discussion of the use

of cameras at our entrances. The

majority of the Reps were in favor of

this, although some Reps didn’t think

this was a good idea.

Police: we will have the Sugar Land

Police Department, instead of the Ft.

Bend Sheriff ’s Office, and Greatwood

may find that we won’t need as many

constables or off duty Sugar Land cops

after annexation. That decision is to be

made at that time.

4) The Board is looking into obtaining

legal protection against those who are

using the Greatwood name or logo.

5) HOA Dues – Since the city of Sugar

Land will pay our current street light

bill once Greatwood is annexed, there

will be about $250,000 more available

annually in the budget. A question

was asked, if that is the case, would

the annual assessment go down? The

answer was that since Greatwood is an

aging community, this money would

be used to shore up our infrastructure

and the HOA assessments would have

to increase according to need.

6) Question about the property being

developed at front of Greatwood. (See

article in this publication.)

Your deputies have commented that bicycle riders in Greatwood are neglecting to stop at stop signs and are committing other

traffic violations. Please follow the “Rules of the Road” based on Texas Transportation Code statues. These laws are designed to improve the safety of everyone who uses the streets and roadways. Don’t become a statistic! Remember to always use hand signals and body actions to communicate with motorists and other bicyclists. The following are Transportation Code statutes:

• Bicyclists have the same rights and duties of other vehicle operators. (551.101) That means you have to stop at stop signs, yield at yield intersections and stop at red signal lights, vehicles are required to yield the right of way to a bicycle when appropriate, just as any other vehicle.

• Ride near the curb and go in the same direction as other traffic in that lane. (551.103) Near the curb is recommended (within three feet) but the law gives a cyclist the right to take the whole lane when necessary for safety.

• Have at least one hand on the handlebars (two are safer). (551.102c) One when signaling but two when turning works well.

• Use hand and arm signals. (545.107) Point the way you are going, let the other operators know what you want to do.

• One rider per saddle. (545.107) You may ride two abreast as long as you don’t impede traffic. (551.103c)

• You must have a white light on the front and a red reflector or red light on the rear (for riding at night) (551.104b) The light is primarily so people can see you coming from the side, where their headlights do not shine on your reflectors. The law changed in 2001 that a red light can replace a red reflector.

• Brakes should be capable of making the braked wheel skid. (551.104a)

Follow the traffic laws in the neighborhoods and save the time event practicing for the closed courses and warm up rides for the main event benefit rides.

REMEMBER!!!!! SCHOOL STARTS AUGUST 24, 2015By the time you receive this bulletin it’s already getting close

to that exciting time of the year when you prepare yourselves for a new school year with your children. I want to mention our annual reminder about school zone safety. The school zone speed zones are still in the same place with the same 20 MPH speed. The times are listed on the school zone signage. Remember, even though the yellow caution lights may not be flashing, the times noted take precedence. For you who are sending the kids to school on their own by bicycle, skate board, etc., plan the route you want your kids to travel to and from the school. During the week or two before school make a couple of practice runs with your children to make sure they know the safe way to go. Demonstrate how to safely cross the streets at intersections and cross walks. Obtain the crossing guard instructions from the school they will attend as they may each operate a little differently. Review those with your children to help them prepare for that first day back to school.

Please remember to lock vehicle doors when you arrive home!! The vehicle burglaries that have occurred in Greatwood recently were all from unlocked parked vehicles.

We know that summer time trips and vacations are ending, but if you are going anywhere for a few days you may request a house watch by going on line at www.fortbendcountytx.gov, departments, Constables, Precinct 1 and house watch. Complete the form. If you have an issue, please give us a call at 281-341-4536.

Group and Club News

Phew!

The 22nd season for your Greatwood Gators team is over. From the cold water in late April to the hot and humid swim meets

in June, almost 200 swimmers and their families survived another fun-filled and marvelous season. Lead by Head Coach Trenton Thome and a talented and expert coaching staff including Coaches Tori Dernehl, Andrew Greene and Evan Murray, the team became the Division I Champs. With hard work and great leadership, we enjoyed a 4-0 season. We came out as the leader at our Division one Meet of Champs meet as well. To top off the season, 44 Gator swimmers challenged the competition at the league All Stars meet on June 29th!

The Greatwood Gators would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous support during our season. Through monetary and in-kind donations, the Gators were able to purchase much needed equipment for the season and support many of our “fun” activities.

Many of you may have already noticed our beautiful, spacious shed at Pool #1. We are thankful to the HOA for allowing us the footprint to place the new storage shed and our sponsors for helping us pay for it. We also purchased an electronic starting system, new lifeguard buoys, and often needed first aid supplies. We would also like to thank Keller-Williams for donating a new event board for our meets. The board will illuminate the event and heat for all to see. It is a great addition to our meet equipment and we are grateful to our friends at Keller-Williams. Without the help of our sponsors at Bandito’s Taco Grill and Russo’s New York Pizzeria, our Lunch with the Coaches would not have happened. We enjoyed great food and great service at each event!

For those of you who were not fortunate enough to be a part of summer swim league, you may not appreciate what all the fuss is about. Swim team is so much more than swimming, learning strokes and competing for ribbons. Swim team is about forging bonds, striving for personal achievement, building team spirit, developing a sense of community, being a part of a team, and encouraging your friends to do the same. These values are not just enjoyed by the swimmers, as it takes many, many dedicated parent volunteers to make it all happen. In fact, it really a remarkable, well-oiled machine and it’s quite astonishing to see. Swim team is about finishing the season and saying on the very next day, “I can’t wait until next season.” Well, neither can I.

See you next year Gators!

The Greatwood Geysers finished up an undefeated dual meet swim season and say huge THANK YOU to our swimmers, volunteers

and coaches for making it a great one full of fun, friendship and sportsmanship. The Geysers were undefeated during the regular dual meet season and named Division 1 dual meet and Meet of Champions champions as well as Southwest Houston Recreational Swim League All-Stars Champions!

Congratulations to all the swimmers who placed at the Meet of Champions and All-Star events. All age-group relays represented the Geysers well with several first and second place wins!

Please remember to visit www.greatwooddistricts.com regularly for up-to-date information regarding your

municipal utility and levee improvement districts. This website is also a great resource for important information during severe weather or emergency events, such as storms and hurricanes. Also, please sign-up at www.greatwooddistricts.com to join our mailing list and receive updates directly in your inbox. Please note that during high water events, such as the one experienced during Memorial Day weekend, information may not be updated daily as river crest projections often do not change from the initial projection. The website will be updated if and when new information is available. Also, Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District No. 11 has an emergency action plan in place for such events and the District is monitored on a regular basis during an event. Also, during high water and emergency events, Fort Bend County posts regular updates. Visit that website at www.fbcoem.org for information and updates.

7) John Bowen - Infrastructure Committee - reported work is continuing on travertine monuments and blade signs. They are being repaired and cleaned on an ongoing basis. The many brick walls in the community are continually being replaced. The walls made of regular bricks can many times be raised instead of replaced. Unfortunately, those walls using cement type bricks always need to be replaced.

8) There were questions about the never-ending problem of traffic backup getting out of the neighborhood in the morning. Board will again look to see what can be done. A resident said that Macek Road needs a left turn lane going into the Crossing.

9) There was a question about redoing the entrance at Riverbrook and Greatwood Parkway as well as the median in front of Landing 1 on Riverbrook. This will be addressed by the Landscape Committee.

10) There was a question about the Fire Dept. on Sansbury. This will be City of Sugar Land Ambulance and Fire and will remain with annexation.

11) Many residents are concerned about the many power surges. This has always been a problem, so it is suggested that they call Centerpoint Energy.

12) Landscape – The Board has approved the expansion of the beds at the entrances, which will provide much more color along with further refurbishing at the main entrance.

13) There is a lot of concern about the speeding in Greatwood. It was suggested that speed bumps might help with this problem. It was also noted that the striping dividing the road lanes was faded or non-existent. Fort Bend Road and Bridge will be contacted about these issues.

Greatwood residents have been

wondering exactly what is going

to be built, on the land that is currently

being cleared next to the main entrance

to Greatwood. This piece of land has

always been sited for commercial use. It

has taken a long time for it to finally be

developed.

The Millis Group, Inc. will be

constructing 18 specialized and very

elegant office condominium buildings on

the 5.78 acre tract of land on Greatwood

Parkway at US 59 S at the main entry of

Greatwood. The buildings will be the

same in size and basic design but will

have different elevations and will be designed per the buyer’s specifications. These buildings will be available for sale

or lease. The development stage is expected to be completed in the fall of this year with the first of the 18 buildings to

be completed by the spring of next year.

August Awareness

Community News

Brown Patch Awareness: Yes it is already time to start watching for this turf disease. The conditions for this to appear are excessive soil moisture, high nitrogen content and cooler temperatures at night. Two out of three of those conditions are possible now and the fungus could occur. Watch for small smoke ring like patterns in the turf, they appear yellow or orange on the edge and will grow in size left untreated.

Nutsedge Weed Control: This is a common weed that grows from tubers beneath the soil. Manually pulling these weeds is akin to pruning in a way. The weed breaks off below the soil line and creates additional nutlets which produce additional weeds! Treatment: pull all visible weeds, apply pre-emergent, mulch and then spray post-emergent as any weeds emerge. This will provide the most effective control.

Crape Myrtle Blooming: In late summer to early fall you may notice your Crape Myrtles produce seed pods after they have bloomed. Prune these off as they appear and most likely you will get an extra blooming cycle prior to defoliation in the winter.

Most herbs can be grown in small pots to add texture and functionality to your patio. Sweet Basil, Cilantro,

Mint and others can add aroma as well as flavor your culinary endeavors. Bring the outdoors in and spice up your life!

Tree Care: Unpruned trees tend to be smaller and less attractive than those properly cared for. Evaluate your trees for several common problems. Remove double leaders, cross branching, low limbs and of course any dead branches. If the tree still has staking material supporting it check to make sure it is not too tight or “girdling” the tree. This will literally kill the tree if not corrected. Allowing these conditions to exist slows the growth of the trees and diminishes the aesthetics of your property. Properly maintained trees will grow faster and have less structural, insect & disease problems. It will also avoid costly replacement down the road!

Until next time good gardening or whatever makes you happy!

GreatwoodNews

Greatwood Community Association, Inc.550 Julie Rivers Dr., Suite 310

Sugar Land, Texas 77478

On an ordinary day, my sister-in-law Kathleen had a gymnastics accident that changed her life forever. At the age of 16, not only did this change her life, it also changed the lives for so many others.

An extraordinary person, one with strength, courage and conviction. In her book, “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t”, she tells her story of how, with all the odds against her, she graduated with honors, got her law degree, married and traveled the world.

For her, it was never a matter of if…just when.

Thank you for letting us bea part of your neighborhood.
