It is our pleasure to help maintain the City’s rich architectural legacy and honor the distinguished people who contribute so much to New York. The New York Landmarks Conservancy is dedicated to celebrating, preserving and protecting the iconic buildings and diverse neighborhoods that define this vibrant and extraordinary City. The Conservancy is the only private organization that provides both financial and technical support in this effort. Since its founding in 1973, it has loaned or granted more than $36 million to help people save their homes and communities, including cultural, religious and social institutions. These grants and loans have in turn mobilized over $1 billion in more than 1,500 renovation projects throughout New York providing much-needed economic stimulus and local jobs. No other organization is engaged in such a hands-on way in sustaining the City’s architectural fabric. LIVING LANDMARKS IN THE HEADLINES

Candice Bergen was a presenter at this year’s Tony Awards. She also starred with fellow Living Landmark Angela Lansbury in The Best Man.

In September, Judy Collins completed a highly successful run at The Carlyle, among her many other scheduled appearances throughout the year.

Based on years of experience, Lewis B. Cullman published How To Succeed in Fundraising by Really Trying, which offers practical advice to fundraisers along with do’s and dont’s. This follows his earlier book Can’t Take It With You : The Art of Making and Giving Money.

The 10th annual Ischia Global Film & Music Fest in Italy honored Clive Davis with the prestigious William Wolton Ischia Legend Award.

In February, Howard Dodson was named the new director of Moorland-Spingarn Research Center and director of the Howard University Library System.

Diane von Furstenberg chaired the exhibit “Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA” (Council of Fashion Designers of America) at the Fashion Institute of Technology marking the CFDA’s 50th anniversary.

In May, Whoopi Goldberg guest starred on the highly rated television series Glee. Goldberg was also honored by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Made in NY award ceremony, receiving its lifetime achievement award. She continues producing her hit Broadway musical Sister Act which recently premiered in Vienna.

In March, Barbara Goldsmith was honored by the Women’s Project Theater with their Women of Achievement award which was presented by the late Nora Ephron.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly was inducted into Irish American magazine’s Hall of Fame.

The American Friends of Beit Morasha of Jerusalem honored former Mayor Ed Koch at a dinner held at Guastavino’s, beneath the newly renamed Ed Koch/Queensboro Bridge. Also, the Robert M. Beren College of Beit Morasha announced the establishment of the Edward I. Koch Center for Public Policy and Jewish Ethics.

Arie Kopelman’s recently restored 19th century Nantucket home was featured in Architectural Digest.

Angela Lansbury was honored with the B.C. Forbes Peopling of America Award at the 11th annual Ellis Island Family Heritage Awards. She also starred in Gore Vidal’s revival of the Tony Award winning play The Best Man.

Danny Meyer continues to open his very popular Shake Shack restaurants in such cities as Coral Gables, Philadelphia and Washington. His newest

restaurant venture, North End Grill, recently opened in Battery Park City.

The Frank Ohman School of Ballet/New York Dance Theatre honored Arthur Mitchell at its spring gala for his ground breaking artistry.

In April, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia honored Jessye Norman with their lifetime achievement award. She was also honored by ACE NEW YORK with their ACE Award for the Arts.

To celebrate their 8th annual Board of Directors Din-ner, St. Christopher’s Inn honored Regis Philbin with their Humanitarian Award. He also won an Emmy for best Talk Show Host along with his former co-host Kelly Ripa.

Representative Charles Rangel won the Democratic nomination for New York’s 15th Congressional District.

The Fashion Institute of Technology honored Oscar de la Renta with their 2012 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion.

In June, Joan Rivers published her 11th book, I Hate Everyone … Starting With Me. She also stars with her daughter Melissa in WE TV’s Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? which has concluded its second season.

In January, Charlie Rose began as co-anchor of CBS This Morning. He is also co-host of the revived series Person to Person, which began airing in February.

The Cornell Real Estate Review named Larry Silverstein as the recipient of their 2012 Industry Leader Award.

Jonathan Tisch, along with other members of the Tisch family, was honored with the Icon of the Indus-try Award by Cornell University. Recently, his Loews Hotels have added to their growing number of luxury hotels throughout North America with the opening of the Loews Hollywood Hotel.

In January, Marlo Thomas starred in Broadway’s Relatively Speaking, an evening of one-acts written by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May. In addition, she was awarded the 2012 Partners in Progress Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her dedication to raising public awareness of pediatric cancer.

During its 125th anniversary gala celebration, Capezio honored Tommy Tune with its 61st annual Capezio Dance Award. He was also the recipient of the Boston Theater Critics Association’s 30th Anniversary Elliot Norton Lifetime Achievement Award.

In May, Barbara Walters delivered the 2012 com-mencement address at Yale University. She contin-ues to co-host The View with fellow Living Landmark Whoopi Goldberg.

The Conservancy mourns the passing of beloved Landmark Mike Wallace.

2011 LIVING LANDMARKS CELEBRATION

The 18th Living Landmarks Celebration was one of the most successful ever raising nearly $750,000 and packing The Plaza Grand Ballroom, which was landmarked through our efforts. 2011 honorees were businessman and philanthropist Lewis B. Cullman, theater historian Louise Kerz Hirschfeld, legendary actress Angela Lansbury, restaurateur Danny Meyer and media personality Regis Philbin. Former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins accepted the prestigious Lew Rudin Living Landmark Award for Outstanding Public Service.
