Welcome to our new Arts and Music

brochure. We aim to offer a

programme of music, art and spoken

word events that will appeal to a

wide range of tastes and interests as

well as enhancing the beautiful

building that is Bradford Cathedral.

Musical events this season include a

singing workshop with Iona musician

John Bell, Bradford Chorale’s spring

concert, the Cathedral Choir’s

summer concert and the opportunity

to ‘Come and Sing’ Evensong, as well

as our regular series of Tuesday

morning coffee concerts and

Bradford Council’s Friday evening

chamber music concerts. We are

delighted that the Cathedral Choir

will again be singing with the

European Chamber Orchestra on

7 Apri l , performing Haydn’s

St Nicholas Mass.

8 March is International Women’s

Day and Irene Lofthouse will be

reading the poetry and telling the

stories of women of the First World

War. We are very pleased to host, for

the third year, Bradford Literature

Festival’s closing Sacred Poetry event.

And this season we also launch a

series of Art and Theology lectures,

with Professor Ben Quash, the

Cathedral’s Canon Theologian, giving

the first lecture.

Our exh ib i t ion p rog ramme

promises to be a rich feast, with

Sarah McWhinney’s video installation

Rhythm o f the Da les , and

photographic exh ib i t ions by

Ian Beesley and our Head Verger

Jon Howard. Lisa Kilty gives us

spiritually inspired paintings, some

created especially for Bradford

Cathedral, and Sharon Snaylam offers

us her paintings of landscapes. Finally,

we welcome a pop-up exhibition

only three days long, of hand-made

knitted items in celebration of

St Bla ise , the Patron Saint

of Woolcombers.

I look forward to welcoming you to

Bradford Cathedral.

SARAH McWHINNEY: RHYTHM OF THE DALES

Sarah McWhinney is a final-year student at Glasgow School of Art. Her

installation explores the natural beauty of Yorkshire Karst limestone gorges

through moving image and sound.

The imagery of these films has been inspired by the underground systems

and caves which famously punctuate the landscape of Yorkshire, formed

over thousands of years by the movement of water. Sarah’s films reference

1930s experimental film techniques digitally enhanced and layered to

synchronise with cello music composed after weekends spent roaming the

Yorkshire Dales.

Opening on Sunday 12 February at 12noon, with live music, following the

morning service.

forty-two days in the wilderness.

Trenches: the Roses of No Man's Land', 'Female Poets of WW1' and other

investigations. Come and discover some of these hidden histories and secret

PROFESSOR BEN QUASH:

CAN CONTEMPORARY ART BE DEVOTIONAL ART?

Ben Quash is Professor of Christianity and the Arts in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King's College London, and Canon Theologian at Bradford

Cathedral. He launches our new series of lectures on Art and Theology.

As the Roman Catholic Church opens a pavilion at the Venice Biennale and many

Protestant traditions cast aside their traditional distrust of images and storm back

into the arena of contemporary visual art, a new set of critical categories may be

called for. To be valuable, these should probably be both aesthetic and theological.

What makes a work of art ‘work' in an ecclesial setting? And what ‘work' should

be expected of it anyway?
