Bulletin BoardThe Done in a Day committee is off to a fantastic start this league year! We completed our first project on saturday, July 25th, which was for the united Way success by six Back to school fair. success by six is an annual event held at Robarts arena and is free to the public. There are over 5000 people who come through the day-long event. Junior league has participated in this event for a number of years. This year, the Done in a Day committee had a Kids in the Kitchen booth in which we made “Monkey Mix,” a tasty and portable snack

of Cheerios, raisins, coconut, and chocolate. This is always a great crowd pleaser for children and adults alike. We also had a bike helmet giveaway. This was a huge success. approxi-mately 260 bike helmets were given away to children of sara-sota County. What a reward to see the face of a child light up when fitted and given a brand-new bike helmet. The Done in a Day committee was pleased to once again participate in this wonderful annual event and represent the Junior league of sarasota in such a positive light!

Simply Sarasota Tasting EventThe Simply Sarasota Cookbook Committee had a tasting at the lakewood Ranch Main street

Chili Cook-off on saturday, september 12th. Manatee County emergency services hosted this event. simply sarasota was promoted at a booth with one of our partners, Wish on Main.

The Junior League of Sarasota is in the second year of its three-year Child Abuse Prevention and Intervention Signature Project. We accomplished many wonderful things in our first year. The Junior League purchased one laptop computer and resource materials for the Child protection Center to utilize for Internet Safety Training. In addition, JL facilitated a great partnership with best buy to provide laptops for use at the countywide parent training hosted by philippi Shores and at the Spring Fest event.

This past year, the following Internet Safety trainings were conducted:

48 student workshops for students from Kindergarten to 8th grades at the following schools and programs: girls Inc., englewood elementary School, pine view, St. Martha’s, Infinity, goldie Feldman Academy, Trinity youth United Church, and the parks and recreation youth program at Colonial oaks park.

5 Community presentations and events that included information shared at Junior League general Membership Meetings, the Junior League Child Advocacy Luncheon, Carlie brucia Safety rally at Central Church of Christ, guardian Ad Litem volunteer Training and SpringFest.

5 parent presentations at pine view, Imagine School, gulf gate elementary, goldie Feldman Academy and phillippi Shores Ib World School.

In total, 2765 children and adults were provided with internet safety information and education through these events. We were also able to give an additional $2,000 for supervised visitation. This enables the Child protection Center to add 6 more visitation sessions for families. A few of our Junior League Members have already been trained and have enjoyed doing this.

The Community Council wants to encourage each and every one of you to get involved in some way with our signature project. We all can make an incredible difference in the lives of children in Sarasota County and we need your help. please visit the JLS website (www.jlsarasota.org) for more details or contact one of the following committee chairs.

Supervised Visitation is chaired by LaLanya robertson. The Children & Families Supervised visitation program provides a capable, responsible visitation volunteer who oversees court-ordered visits between a child and his or her non-custodial parent in a physically and emotionally safe environment. visitation supervisors are trained to understand the needs of the child, the parent and the court. please

Signature Project Updatesee the Junior League website (www.jlsarasota.org) for all the upcoming training dates.

The Playground portion of the signature project is co-chaired by Monica barth and Leslie busler for the second year. The installation of the playground at the new Child Advocacy Center on orange Avenue is scheduled to begin this fall and completed in time for the dedication tentatively being planned for early 2010. The playground will give children and adults time to play and to interact with each other during these stressful times.

borders conducted a second annual book drive to benefit the Junior League of Sarasota’s Signature project, the Intervention and prevention of Child Abuse. 10% of the value of all books purchased for donation were donated back to the project and will be placed in the new Child Advocacy Center library. These books will serve the children who are receiving services as a result of being victims of abuse and neglect.

The Internet Safety Committee, chaired by Concetta hollinger, is focused on providing education and awareness targeting children, teens, and adults in the better understanding of staying “safer” on the internet. Using a workshop called NetSmartz, we are dedicated to the technological health, well-being, and safety of our community’s children. We are also educating parents, teachers, and other adults on how to keep children safer on the internet. The Internet Safety Committee will be hosting educational workshops on NetSmartz throughout the year and ending up with a large evening seminar.

The Education Committee, chaired by Shana Zamikoff, will work closely with the Child protection Center in the planning of many events during the month of April for the “paint the Town blue” campaign. “paint the Town blue” is a month long initiative to bring awareness and prevention of child abuse to the forefront and to make a positive difference in our community leading the way to end this abuse. In addition, the education Committee will attend Spring Fest at the end of March. This daylong event is hosted by the Child protection Center and combines awareness, education and fun for a day focused on our future’s most valuable asset: ChILDreN.

The Luncheon Committee, chaired by Nikki Taylor, is hosting an informative luncheon on Tuesday, April 6 at Michael’s on east. our speaker will be Jeni Silver, who now works at the Child protection Center and who is a survivor of child abuse. She will share her story and then we will be honoring a number of individuals who have made a significant difference in the lives of children in Sarasota County.

bSupervised visitation

The Best Supervisor Ever!Supervisors and great because they

volunteer their time,They always have a great big smile

and that makes me feel fine. They encourage me and keep

me safe and make me laugh out loud.

And if I’m having a bad day they wipe away that cloud.

They take time out of their busy day To watch me have some fun.

They are so bright and funny they shine just like the sun.

When it’s time for me to go they’ll wipe away my tears,

but then comes next Saturday when I will reappear.

Thank you for spending this time with my mom and me.

you took something that was so hard and made it e-Z.

This was written by a 12 year-old in the Supervised Visitation Program. Shortly after she wrote this, her mother disappeared again and has not returned. This beautiful child’s sincere appreciation for the time and impact that this volunteer had on her is quite evident. If you would like to learn more, call the Child Protection Center at 941-492-6491.

jWords of WisdomjJenny Junior League

dear Jenny,I’m trying to save money so that I can go back to grad school in the fall. Any suggestions?Signed, Cash Strapped

Dear Cash,

The easiest way to save money is to look at your food expenses. Faster than you can say, “bottomless breadsticks at olive garden,” Jenny has found a way to cut your grocery bill by 25%. While Jenny is delighted with the idea of making a meal of the free lollipops at bank of America (red are the tastiest), as always, she suggests looking no farther than the League for your nutritional sustenance.

Sign up for a shift working at a Kids-in-the-Kitchen event. It is Jenny’s experience that when the kids get to the end of the “Monkey Mix” assembly line, they generally shriek, “eeeeW! No coconut!” My guess is that, at the end of your shift, the Done-in-a-Day project coordinator will be happy to give you the unused 28-pound Sam’s Club bag of flaked coconut. Score!

What better place to find free food than a Simply Sarasota cookbook tasting event? We haven’t sold over 10,000 books for nothing. A quick visit to border’s will yield you endless samples of “eat the Whole Thing” chocolate cake and you can stock up on cookbooks for the upcoming gift-giving season. As you know, all profits from the $24.95 sale price go directly to the projects the League supports. philanthropy never tasted better.

Finally, Jenny says that general Meeting is a not-to-miss event for food scavenging. Three cheers to the Arrangements committee and their supply of candy on the tables. Jenny remembers one brief moment of culinary bliss last year when she arrived fifteen minutes early for meeting and found both Dove chocolate and strawberry Nerds on the same table. Mmmmmmm.

Brooke Cherry ActiveI have at least ten books on my bedside table. The two I am currently reading are Walk-ing the Bible and Lost on Planet China. Under my bed is my cat,

named Doggie, and my husband’s old 1980’s style electric keyboard.

Amy SankesActiveI have a stack of books on my bed-side table. I am reading three- The Outliers, Wednes-day’s Sister and Toddler 411. I just cleaned under my bed so there is

nothing there; not even a dust bunny.

Elizabeth WildhackSustainerThe Gaudi Key is the book on my bedside table. It’s about an archi-tect who built a church in barce-lona. The leaves of my dining

room table are under my bed.

Concetta Hollinger/ActiveProvisional: 2008-2009 Co-chair for the provisional Class project

Double placing in 2009: Co-chairing the Signature project Internet Safety Committee and working on Sand Script.

Vocation: I am a social worker by background and victim advocate by trade.

Money saving tip: I love bath and body Works hand soap, but we go through a ton of it at my house. So, when a new bottle of it gets about 1/3 used, I fill it back up with some water, shake it around, and stretch out its life without taking away the qualities that make it great!

Laura Baumberger/ActiveProvisional: 2006-2007

JLS statistics: holiday Tour of homes Committee for 2 years prior to starting on the publications Committee.

Vocation: I am an environmental engineer specializing in the water and wastewater treatment field.

Hobbies: “My favorite hobby is hmmm, who has time for hobbies! I guess if I had time, I would love to read, scrapbook, and travel.”

Money saving tip: being a new mom, my best money-saving tip right now is to make homemade wipes. They are much less expensive and are so gentle on the baby’s skin. No more diaper rash!

Lisa Taylor/SustainerProvisional: 1983-84

JLS statistics: active member through 1996. on the League’s first cookbook

committee (Fare by the Sea), Nominating/placementcommittee, and a member of Leagattos.*

Vocation: currently working with my husband, Scott, in our business, All-Star equipment, a construction equipment rental firm.

Hobbies: travel, tennis, walking, and singing with the local vocal ensemble The Florida voices.

Money saving tip: The one money saving tip I can offer is want versus need - I decide whether or not I really need that item or is it something I just want. Doing that has truly helped in keeping my credit card expenses lower!*Who are the mysterious Leagattos? See the Sustainer pages for details!

Amanda McCrackenProvisional: 2007-2008 Cookbook committee

JLS Statistics: Sand Script photographer (second year) & handbook editor

Vocation: Managing partner of K&A Audio, Inc for the past 15 years (opened the Sarasota office in 2004).

Hobbies: decorating and staging homes and “pretending I am the next Food Network Star!”

Money saving tip: Cut Large Fran leaves from your yard leaving about a foot of stem. place them in clear glass vases with water and small stones at the bottom. It’s a fast and economical way to decorate a table.

Keri KuhnProvisional: 2006-2007

JLS Statistics: Cookbook committee Treasurer, Writer for Sand Script, and

this year, editor of Sand Script

Vocation: Industrial Designer specializingin marine product and millwork architecture. “I have recently started my own line of modern children’s furniture called Sheridan 151.”

Hobbies: singing with The Florida voices and section hiking the Appalachian Trail with husband brian, daughter Nora (5) and son Cyrus (3).

Money saving tip: Never underestimate the power of nostalgia when gift giving. Shop on ebay for great buys on unusual, vintage memories. Not only are you saving money, you are saving the earth’s resources by repurposing old stuff. And that 1952 purdue yearbook with a buy-It-Now price of $19.95 may just bring a tear to your grandma’s eye.

Ginny Coursen WyattProvisional: 2008

JLS Statistics: Sand Script Assistant Chair

Vitals: ginny is a local Sarasota girl who graduated

from FSU with a degree in business Communication. She has the good fortune to be married to her super-cute hubby eddie for fifteen years and has three lovely and well-behaved children- Susan, 3rd grade, bruce, first grade and Maggie, kindergarten. As a Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, she enjoys helping women look and feel their very best. ginny enjoys photography, is slightly addicted to making Shutterfly books, and is currently trying hard to be motivated to exercise. In her free time, ginny enjoys being involved at The Church of the redeemer, The Ashton elementary School Advisory Committee and The “I Will get organized Tomorrow” Club.
