Moot Court Society Annual Report (2014-15)

In order to achieve excellence in the field of Legal Education, we need to cross the barriers of traditional learning methodology; legal education must be imparted in a holistic way. Moot court activity in general and moot court competitions in particular have come to be regarded as the best tools to overcome these barriers.

Lokmanya Tilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition

Carrying forward its legacy of past 6 years, the college along with the Moot Court Society had organised the 7th edition of the Lokmanya Tilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition on the 30th and the 31st January 2015. The unique selling point of our competition is of being the only Appellate Moot Court Competition, in which, unlike any other moot court competition the problem is based on an actual Trial Court case. Ours is a unique style of mooting format at Appellate Level in both Civil and Criminal domains involving real life cases and arguments which will expose the participants to a range of soft skills which a professional practitioner is supposed to imbibe in his presentations.

The problem was based on real civil case. By making necessary changes, Civil Paper-book was prepared and provided to the participants for the arguments.

Like every year, teams across India participated in the event. This year we had the participation of maximum number of teams, with 18 teams of which 6 teams were out of the state of Maharashtra.

This year’s edition of the competition was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Retd. Justice D. G. Karnik, Bombay High Court and the Guest of Honour were Adv. Uday P. Warunjikar, Member, Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa. The competition was scheduled for 2 days. The competition commenced with the orientation of the teams followed by the Preliminary Round.

18 teams were judged by 8 Judges in 4 court rooms. The preliminary round advanced for the whole day. The result for the teams qualifying for the Semi-Final round was announced in the late evening, which was followed by a feedback session from all the judges to the participants.

The Semi-Finals and the Finals were scheduled on the second day. The teams qualifying for the finals were University Law College, Bangalore and Rizvi Law College, Mumbai. mooters from both the sides argued vehemently, rebutting each other’s arguments and answering the queries posed by the Judges. After an interesting battle among the finalists, the judges ruled the case in favour of the defending champions, Rizvi Law College, Mumbai.

The Final Round was followed by the Valedictory function. The following awards were awarded by the Chief Guest Adv. Jamshdji Cama and the Guest of Honour Adv. P. T. Dighe.
