Duchess of Cambridge gives birth Lagos, May 2: Nigeria's military has rescued 234 more girls and women from a Boko Haram forest stronghold in the country's northeast, an announcement on social media said today. It brings the number of females declared rescued this week to more than 677. It comes as the army deployed ground troops following weeks of pun- ishing air raids on the Sambisa Forest. President Goodluck Jonathan, whose term ends this month, said Thursday that the forest is the last hold- out of the militants and he pledged to "hand over a Nigeria completely free of terrorist strongholds." There have been reports that some women fought the troops, with Boko Haram using them as an armed human shield for its main fighting force. It is not known how many girls, women, boys and men Boko Haram has kidnapped over its nearly 6-year- old rebellion. The military says it is screening the girls and women to find out what villages they came from. Some women the soldiers tried to rescue even shot at their rescuers, a military spokes- man has said, indicating that some might now identify with Boko Haram after months of captivity and forced marriages. It also remains unclear if some of the women had willingly joined Boko Haram, or are family members of fighters. The Nigerian military yesterday released photos of some of the girls and women they said were taken between Tuesday and Thursday in the Sam- bisa Forest. The photos show 20 or so women, children and babies looking generally healthy physically. But at least one child looks emaci- ated and some of the children have the orange-colored hair signaling severe malnutrition. Facebook introduces Anonymous Login for apps to let you hide personal info British crime writer Ruth Rendell dies London, May 2: Best-selling British crime writer Ruth Ren- dell, who wrote over 60 books in a career spanning five decades, died today at the age of 85, her publisher said. Rendell suffered a stroke in January and had been in a critical condition in hospital. In a statement, Penguin Random House said: "We are devastated by the loss of one of our best-loved authors." "We will miss her enor- mously," it said. Gail Rebuck, chair of Penguin Random House UK, said: "Ruth was much admired by the whole publishing industry for her brilliant body of work. "An insightful and elegant observer of society, many of her award-winning thrillers and psychological murder mysteries highlighted the causes she cared so deeply about," she said. Rendell was best known for psychological thrillers delving into the criminal mind as well as the successful tele- vision adaptation "The Ruth Rendell Mysteries". Her fictional creation, the sensitive Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford, featured in her first novel "From Doon to Death" (1964) and throughout her career. AFP Save your skin in summer with vitamin C London, May 2: Protect your skin from the harsh ultra-violet rays of the sun with vitamin C. Britain's expert nutritionist Jacqueline Newson shares the lesser known benefits of the antioxidant and talks about the best way to get vita- min C into your cells, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Vitamin C has antioxi- dant properties that help to counter any free radical cell damage caused to the skin due to toxins like smoking, environmental pollutants and excess sun exposure. This clever antioxidant also has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin E, giving added protection to the skin. Vitamin C will also come to the rescue if you succumb to sunburn or are unlucky enough to be targeted by mosquitoes. It has amazing wound healing abilities and can help to prevent the dan- gerous consequences of long term sun exposure which can potentially lead to skin cancer. The nutrient is vital for the synthesis of collagen, which is one of the most abundant proteins in our bodies and an essential component of the connective tissue that holds our skin together as well as a major part of our joints, car- tilage, teeth, blood vessels, bones, eyes, heart and prey much everything in the body! It is also important because it activates the enzymes nec- essary for initiating the reac- tions that create collagen in the body. For healthier, smoother and younger looking skin -- make sure you eat up your fruit and veggies and add vitamic C to your diet. AGENCIES London, May 2: Prince Wil- liam's wife Kate gave birth to a girl on Saturday, sparking cel- ebrations for the royal couple's new arrival, a princess who becomes the fourth in line to the British throne. "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am," the royal residence of Kensington Palace said in a statement. Mother and baby "are both doing well," it said. Prince William was pres- ent for the birth and all senior members of the royal family have been told the news, which was first announced in a tweet and then by the traditional colourfully-dressed town crier on the steps of the hospital. The new Princess of Cam- bridge, who weighed in at 8 pounds 3 ounces (3.7 kilos), comes after big brother George in the line of succession, below Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son Prince Charles and his eldest son William. The names favoured by bookmakers are Alice and Charlotte. Media teams from around the world rushed to the private maternity wing of St Mary's hospital in the early morning, joining a group of royal superfans who have remained camped outside for more than a week. There were cheers in the crowd after the birth, with supporters singing: "It's a girl! It's a girl!" "I'm so pleased," Margaret Tyler, 71, who wore a jacket in the colours of the British Union Jack flag and a badge in honour of William's late mother Diana. "William wanted a girl and Diana wanted a girl. I think it's just nice for George to have a little sister," she said.
