Grand Opening of Loscam’s First Super Operations Center in ChinaLoscam’s first super depot in China was officially put into service in June 2019 after more than two years of planning and construction. It is the first large-scale automated pallet pooling operation center in China. Located in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, this super depot is ideally located and equipped with the nation's first automated sorting, repairing and painting line. It will be opened in two phases, with the 12,000m² warehouse of the first phase already in operation.

The Jiaxing Super Depot will become the operational hub of the East China region serving the entire Yangtze River Delta area. According to statistics, more than 80% of Loscam's customers in East China are located within the 1-1.5-hour economic circle centered in Jiaxing. The East China logistics centers of major customers such as Wal-Mart and China Resources Vanguard (CRV) are also located in Jiaxing and its surrounding areas. Jiaxing is the prime location for the establishment of a super depot because it optimally balances the average transportation distance between Loscam and its major customers, as well as that between the various warehouses in East China.

The construction of the Jiaxing Super Depot is Loscam’s key step in the upgrade of its two-tiered operation model of “Regional Hub Depot + Front-end Small Service Depot” in Greater China. This operation model upgrade will prepare Loscam well for its upcoming large-scale palletization. The full set of automation equipment will greatly improve the processing capacity of the Jiaxing Super Depot: the first phase warehouse can support the pooling operation of more than 3 million pallets, and the second phase will be able to effectively support static usage of 10 million pallets, or pallet pooling of over 3 million pallets.

Together as a group, we will succeed in our safety “Mission Zero”!Across the Loscam group, achieving best practice in health and safety is a core responsibility for every single one of us. Excelling in the provision of a completely accident-free operation will always be a number one priority for us as a group, and our talented, diligent, highly valued employees understand that their occupational health and safety is of the utmost importance to us. We are devoted in promoting a safety-first working culture. In 2019, many of our Loscam operation area achieved the goal of zero accidents through a series of occupational safety promotion activities.

Under the umbrella of our proud “Mission Zero” 2019 program, the Loscam team will continue to maintain a truly excellent safety record, including zero injury-caused deaths and little time lost to injuries. Moving forward together in Mission Zero, we will vigorously pursue our zero-injury targets with the implementation of leading safety practices to ensure we’ll be as free as possible from known and hidden dangers or hazards.

Ensuring a safe environment in every corner of our operation requires astute attention and close collaboration at all levels of the organisation, including productive communications between our higher level team members and managers across all our regions.

To enhance these communication channels, Loscam held our first “Group Operational Health & Safety Conference” in JiaXing, China, between 25th and 27th June, during which upper management and team members from all regions converged to discuss and contribute ideas in the name of best practice health and safety across the workplace.

Many achievements and innovations were shared, such as the Emerging Market team’s suite of solutions which significantly improve safety and boost productivity. For example, in an Indonesian depot upgrade this year, new lighting and ventilation systems drastically reduced the inhalation of harmful dust and chemicals.

LOSCAM’S UNCOMPROMISING COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

To ensure we comfortably comply with all relevant legal statutes and regulations, it’s Loscam’s policy to adopt the very best industry practices and international standards across health and safety… including the provision of cutting-edge training to all staff on machinery and tools, and accessible communication channels to raise issues and solve problems.

June 2019 marked the 18th “Safe Production Month” for Loscam China. The theme of this year was “Preventing Risks, Eliminating Hidden Dangers, and Curbing Accidents.” Under the coordination by the company's safety committee, the depots and offices within the Greater China region carried out various activities such as safety presentations and training sessions, theme banners, online and offline safety consultations, safety knowledge contests, safety hazard investigations, fire and first-aid drills, and “safe shooting” photography, etc. Colleagues from the company showed much enthusiasm in participation. After the event, some colleagues expressed their feelings: “There is no second life, safety first. The safety of the operation site is never negligible.”It was a superb collaboration between our colleagues across all the activities, with one team member speaking for us all in remarking: “We only have one life and nothing is more important than safety. No stone should be left unturned in the name of safety, on every single Loscam site.”

Earlier this year, the Loscam’s Wingfield repair facility in South Australia celebrated the completion of an external hardstand surface upgrade, which supports enhanced product segregation and the growth in Loscam’s new product offering - including IBC’s, fold down bins and display pallets.

Importantly, this exciting upgrade investment also facilitated numerous improvements in site safety, not to mention the creation of an additional loading bay which triggers faster vehicle turnaround times. “I’m really proud of the Operations team and their ambition for success in our ongoing improvements. This completes the first of numerous 2019 site initiatives currently underway in South Australia… these are very exciting, very safe times”, remarked James Russell, proud state manager for South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Loscam Thailand receives the silver level of good practice in occupational safety and health management certificate and certificate of participation in the campaign project on driving of Inspection and development of the occupational safety, health and environment management system in high establishment and passed the evaluation criteria, this is presented by Ayutthaya Provincial Governor at the Ayothatya Municipality. Loscam Thailand will continue to maintain OHS development for protecting our people along with supporting the business achieve the target of injury free.

Loscam participated in the 17th ECR China Conference in 2019 and was honored with multiple awards

Digital Collaboration, New Intelligent Retailers & Suppliers

The “17th ECR China Conference” hosted by the China ECR Committee was grandly held in Qingdao, Shandong on 4-6 June, 2019. The theme of the conference “Digital Collaboration, New Intelligent Retailers & Suppliers” was elaborated with in-depth discussions on the development of online and offline supply chain integration. Loscam, as a member of the ECR Board of Directors and system service provider, was invited to give the keynote speech. In addition, Loscam received multiple prestigious awards at the conference: the ECR China Conference Annual System Service Provider 2018 and the ECR China Conference Best Exhibitor 2019.

In addition, Leo Hu, Head of key accounts of Loscam Greater China, also shared his thoughts on supply chain optimisation and palletisation promoting the integration of information flow in the supply chain. Loscam’s service to its large customer base in the fast-moving consumer goods industry has laid a good foundation for the upstream and downstream palletisation. However, at present, the true value of pallet pooling to the supply chain is still under the exploring stage.

Palletisation with serial shipping container code (SSCC) will be the key to unlocking this gold mine. The electronic data transmission of ASN through SSCC can greatly improve the cargo handling capacity of the distribution centers; this has also been proved successful after being widely utilised in mature markets.

Xu Ting, Head of Sales Management of Loscam Greater China, was an important guest at the conference. She gave an excellent speech on the Opportunities and Challenges of the Digitalis ation of Pallets in Omni-Channel Retailing, respectively expounding the opportunities that come with the digital upgrade of retail supply chains, and the trends of pallet digitalisation.

Xu Ting believed that with the deep integration of the supply chain in this age of information, the extensive practice of unitized logistics and the integratiovn of upstream and downstream information flow will inevitably become a trend. The launching of smart supply chains with smart logistics vehicles as the nodes will be the direction of future development. At this stage, the most important value of pallets with RFID is to provide customers with technical means of asset management in dynamic circulation, and also to meet the needs of pallet service providers on quality control management. After eight years of basic service system construction, Loscam is exploring the digitalisation of pallet pooling to further assist in supply chain innovation.

CUSTOMER STORY: NESTLÉ CHINA

Intelligent and Efficient Supply Chain Strategy

Why Pallet Pooling is an important strategy for Nestle’s China Logistics costs have always been a concern for many big businesses. After all, if we can reduce the cost of logistics, we can price our products more competitively, and thereby drive up company profits. How to effectively reduce logistics costs has become an important issue for the industry.

In June of this year, the marketing department of Loscam China together with Professor Li Sujian, editor-in-chief of Logistics & Material Handling magazine, Dr. Wu Jingpeng, director of the magazine, and reporter Wang Yu—went to the headquarters of Nestlé Greater China to interview Mr. Tony Domingo, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Purchasing, Nestlé Greater China. He explained in detail Nestlé Greater China's supply chain, efficient operation of procurement, and how they make “pallet pooling” an important strategy.

He took the Wyeth baby formula powder business of Nestlé as an example. 99% of the formula powder produced by the factory is transported to the dealers and major customers by pallet pooling, and the transport volume is over 100,000 pallets per year. In China, products are transported 7-9 times on average from manufacturer to consumers. The implementation of pallet pooling reduces the number of handling to 4 times, reducing manual handling and product damages; The average loading and unloading time is shortened from 2.5 hours to 30 minutes. Since the speed of logistics has increased significantly, Wyeth and dealer distribution center throughput has increased four times; truck turnover has increased by 25-27%. This environmentally friendly logistics method should be vigorously promoted and implemented.

In addition, Tony Domingo also shared the strategies Nestlé used to implement palletisation, as well as their experience and the problems they encountered. In summary, Nestlé Greater China is constantly seeking new applications for its pallet pooling model, and stresses on continuous process improvement. The joint efforts of Nestlé and the upstream and downstream corporations in the supply chain will promote the standardization and automation of the logistics industry and improve operational efficiency.

See Logistics & Material Handling for the full text.

Pallet Pooling strengthens the competitive edge

In the interview, Tony Doming discussed concerns such as the low efficiency of traditional supply chains and the rising labor costs in China. Nestlé has long promoted “palletisation” as an important strategy. We have a strategic partnership with a pallet rental service provider. Full palletisation can not only greatly improve loading and unloading efficiencies, reduce the costs of supply chain and logistics, but also ensure the safety of the products in the process of operation and handling, and thereby avoid product damages.

Since 2013, Loscam’s Executive Vice President of Australia & New Zeland, Daniel Bunnett has been enhancing connections and widening communication channels across the ANZ region with his celebrated roadshow. After a busy 2019 roadshow which travelled further than ever, Daniel took the time to answer some-quick fire questions.

How long does the roadshow run for & how far do you travel?

“When I first started the roadshow in 2013, we would finish within two weeks. Now we’re including New Zealand and North Queensland, it’s more like three weeks… involving nine flights, 21 presentations and 17,000km!”

There are so many important messages behind the roadshow. What’s top of mind in 2019?

“I try to provide a broad and inclusive update over the course of the roadshow, as we reach staff from every department. However there is always a strong message on safety and financial performance, in tandem with new product development. These are exciting times for Loscam, with constant developments on safety initiatives, new market entries and innovative product development. Whenever the roadshow comes round there is much to update, collate and discuss… and it’s great to demonstrate to our team that, even as a mature business, we are not standing still.”

This is the 6th year in which you’ve run the roadshow. Any favourite story to share?

“Personally I think that being there at the roadshows to get direct feedback from the team is just as important as the message I am sharing. Every piece of feedback is highly valued, but I must share an example from the first roadshow in 2013. After delivering an update at a Sydney site, I was approached by a nightshift worker who had worked for Loscam for over 10 years. He told me he was really appreciative of the update, although it made him realise that after his 10 years’ service he barely knew anything about us. From that moment I became even more committed to the roadshow and the communication it facilitates with our staff, on any shift in any location.”

What have been the key highlights of the 2019 roadshow around the ANZ region?

“I really loved getting out and meeting all the team, having the time to better understand the subtle differences between sites. It’s rare in our industry to have every business unit performing perfectly at the same time, so the roadshow allows me to celebrate those who are doing well but also listen, consider and help motivate those teams which may be struggling. A key highlight in 2019 is the extension of our presentation to enable input from more speakers from different departments, including Key Accounts, Sales and Operations. This year our regional head of OH&S, Shane Crouch, joined me to deliver a key update.”

How has staff participation in the roadshow evolved over the years?

“In the early presentations I generally had a very nervous and quiet audience. But six years on, a certain comfort level has evolved, creating an environment which encourages the team to ask questions or even challenge me on certain issues, which is wonderful!”

And finally, if you had to pick one clear key positive from the roadshow, what would it be?

“It’s clear that the more we can communicate with our people, the better we’ll be for it on every level. The roadshow initiative was in response to a staff survey which showed our internal communications were poor, at best. Although I still spot the occasional ‘sleeper’, the vast majority of the roadshow audience is well engaged, and the communication channels we open always bring back some great insight into what’s happening at the coal face. The challenge is keeping content exciting, so I am fortunate to have plenty of evolving depots, products and regions from which to put plenty of interesting material together!”

In December 2018, Loscam Thailand was incredibly proud to announce our logistics partnership with BEST Inc., formerly known as BEST Logistics Technologies, a Chinese logistics company backed by the Alibaba Group and one of the largest express delivery firms in China.

We are delighted that BEST Inc. chose us to join the journey of its expansion in South East Asia via Thailand with a regular order of our standard ECR Pallet, so to celebrate on this 1st anniversary of the partnership we do a deep dive with Mr. Jason Qian, General Manager of Southeast Asia and CEO & President of BEST Inc. Thailand, for some expert insights into this exciting market.

BEST Inc.’s positioning in Thailand & the core business in the market.

BEST Inc. is a leading integrated smart supply chain and logistics solutions provider, and has eight successful supply chain businesses in China and across 19 countries globally. Their target is to expand into the entire Southeast Asia within three years, with Thailand as a promising hub for the region. So far BEST Inc. has already launched Express and Supply Chain businesses in Thailand and Vietnam, with a focus on the Express business which is highly competitive in Southeast Asia.

Along with the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce in Southeast Asia, BEST leverages its advantages in technology, management, and transportation resources to build a complete network and provides customers with smooth and seamless services. In the future, BEST plans to focus on facilitating the e-commerce logistics services in other Southeast Asian countries based on their experience from Thailand, exporting technologies and services to more countries in order to meet the growing logistics needs across the region.

With express services likely to become more significant in the near future, let’s look at the main factors key to logistics and express delivery.

Since BEST is the first and only logistics company with a franchising model in Thailand, they distinguish themselves from peers through their close collaboration with local partners. “Global to Local” is the classic key element to set them apart and make them successful.

With the development of e-commerce and the consumers’ rising demand for quality express services, BEST believes that keys to success are: 1. Sincere service; 2. Perfect technical support; and 3. Affordable price. They said that they need to give users more convenient service experience, with fast and safe delivery of parcels.

As BEST Inc. has gained valuable business know-hows from more than a decade of development and built a superb franchise network, they can quickly adapt to meet the growing needs of customers.

With an increasing consumer preference towards faster delivery, comes a requirement to focus on the challenges & issues of logistics in the Thailand market.

The challenges BEST faced can be summarized into two categories:

1. “Different customers have individual or variable expectations of service, so one of BEST’s biggest challenges is to design customized delivery services, for example fruit delivery, food delivery, large e-commerce items, to meet the customers’ demands.”

2. “There is a rising demand from consumers in upcountry provinces. Another challenge for BEST is

that they need to put more emphasis on upcountry provinces and allocate more resources to the networks there to improve our service in remote areas.”

BEST Inc. prefers to rent than to buy pallets, stating advantages of its asset-light model to express & logistic business.

The rental model requires smaller capital investment than the purchasing model, and it is easier to manage the deterioration. It is lower the costs of operation by reducing the management of warehouses and logistics.

Loscam is a massive wooden pallets company in Thailand, with many depots ready to fulfill all the pallet requirements across BEST’s warehouses, the price is very reasonable and entirely suitable for this market. This is exactly what BEST is looking for!

Loscam has provided a great price rental offering to the BEST supply chain business. From the initial step of supply chain warehouses used on the closed loop model, to Loscam recommending new pallets for rotation use in the warehouse, to Loscam providing the fasten delivery new wooden pallet from their depot directly, the service has been invaluable.

In future plans for the partnership, the BEST supply chain warehouse is expanding upcountry in order to find more customers, so the volume of storage thus is increasing, which means Loscam might offer them a special price to serve as the most effective cost platform for BEST.

They look forward to a future going together with Loscam as a BEST key partner!

Loscam Vietnam builds school & community hope in Ha Giang

The community driven initiative was the brainchild of our Vietnam General Manager, LanAnh DoThi, who traveled to Ha Giang province in 2018. “It is one of the most beautiful yet poorest areas in Vietnam on the Chinese border”, says LanAnh. “Chua Say village is a mountainous town, located about 600km away from Hanoi, and nearly 100km deep in the zigzag mountainous pass, at the far north east of Ha Giang province. Here 96% of local people are H’Mong ethnic minority, living in very poor conditions.”

The life of local residents here depends mainly on the cultivation of maize and cassava, so poverty is common place. Chua Say school is the only place of study in the village, and cares for more than 100 students between two and ten years old. The old building is deteriorated, decayed and leaks rain. It is no place for school.

The new classrooms provide badly needed basic facilities, giving these children a chance to receive a better education and laying a foundation of longer term benefit to community.

In yet another example of the charitable nature throughout Loscam’s staff in every region, between May and July 2019 Loscam Vietnam worked with charity fund TAM to build a small school of three classrooms in Chua Say village, Ha Giang province.

There were challenges and difficulties during the build, but with true spirit our whole team pulled together to navigate issues and deliver these children a real chance to receive a better education in a better school. Although the funding is not huge, longer term benefits to the disadvantaged children and the community are significant. As LanAnh perfectly summarises, “We help children in need so that one day they might have the opportunity to take their lives into their own hands.”

On the day of the handover, the Loscam team received a lot of appreciation from the villagers. One village representative said: “We are so thankful to Loscam and TAM for providing us new classrooms right at the start of the new school year. The students can’t wait to start and enjoy their newly built facility, playground and all the new books!”

The gratitude in the eyes of the children, their families and the teachers on completion of this education project was a great reward for us to receive for our work.

About TAMThe TAM Foundation charity fund was established in 2017 and has since undertaken 12 educational projects to date, including the construction and extension of many schools, as well as providing financial care to poor ethnic children in the remotest areas in Northern Provinces. TAM was founded by Phuong, a Vietnamese American woman.

A compelling call to action for better educationLanAnh explains the origins of the initiative: “I came across villages where I saw very young children surviving on their own, while their parents have no option but to work on the far away rice fields or by the border. There was a lack of schools and resources. Children who were not in school were roaming around aimlessly and it was dangerous.”

“We had heard about the charity fund TAM through one of our local authority contacts, and that they had previously done some charitable work in Ha Giang and we were subsequently introduced. TAM focusses on educational projects in remote areas of Vietnam, with strict finance parameters to ensure that 100% of donations to the foundation is used for core project realisation.”

In total the collaboration raised VND150mil for building the school, which allowed budget for a play yard, tables, chairs and book shelves. After three months hard, dedicated work, the new school was proudly handed over to the local authority on 11 Jul 2019.LanAnh continues, “We got strong support from the local authority in term of paperwork and other accommodation and transport arrangements during the construction period. However, infrastructure here is almost nil, and the network of roads is underdeveloped which made it very tough to commute to the village with materials. We had to travel through soil paths, crossing streamlines and mountains. All construction materials were transported to the project location by motorbikes!”
