Lincoln (IL) is selected over Seward (NY) for the Republican nomination. –No expansion of slavery

Douglas (IL) Northern Democrat, -Popular Sovereignty

Breckinridge (KY) Southern Democrat, (VP under Buchanan), in favor of slaveholder’s rights.

John Bell (TN) Constitutional Union, Large slaveholder, but against the expansion of slavery in the West.

S.C. decides 9 November 1860 to meet 17 December to discussion secession

Buchanan in December 1860 issues a statement saying secession is unconstitutional

Many Southern states believe Lincoln is an abolitionist and begin withdrawing from the Union (Dec 1860 – June 1861)

February 1861: The Confederate States of America is founded, Jefferson Davis (MS) becomes President 22 Feb. 1861

Lincoln is sworn in 4 March 1861

12 April 1861 the Civil War begins at the battle of Fort Sumter (A Union loss)

It is true Lincoln was slow to act regarding the growing discontent of the South while serving as President-Elect (Nov 1860-March 1861). Lincoln thought that he had little authority to act and was reluctant to issue further statements regarding his position on slavery.
