Editorial February 28th, 1999 Posted March 4th, 1999

Dear friends, members and readers,

Welcome to the April issue of SWN, which should be in our members hands in due time before our AGM - if the Danish Postal service permits! I wrote in my last editorial, that our bulletin was delayed here in Denmark because of a mistake by tbe above mentioned authorities. And the very same thing happened also last month, despite I have made some big labels, in which I wrote “A Prioritaire” and put those in the boxes with the Danish letters.

Now, this month I’ll speak with the postmaster himself, telling him that our bulletin must be send as first class letter, hoping this will help. I will keep you informed next month.

This April issue can however be delayed a little due to the Easter holidays. And already now, 1 can tell you, that also the May issue will be delayed a little because of our AGM which will held on the very same week-end as I use to edit and compile the bulletin.

Speaking about our AGM (Annual General Meeting for those who are not familar with this abbreviation), it will, as you know, be held during the week-end April 30-th to May 2nd, at the West coast of Jutland. On page 13 you can read more detailed information, and on page 14 a detailed map can be found. If you have further questions, you are welcome to contact our treasurer, Bent Nielsen. His addres cm be found on page 2.

But already now, we can tell you - that as usual - we will see some of our welknown members, such as Andy Schmid, Harald Kuhl and Dario Monferrini. And we know that more on it’s way. But of course we also want very much to see= at this annual event. It is not just an AGM, but also a friendly get-to-gether, where we enjoy each others company. So, let us also see you at Vejrs Strand, but please make your reservations fast - very fast, so to say!

Again I’m happy to say, that an almost complete SWN containing 32 pages is ready for you. The Utility shack is also included this month, contrary to last month, where I received Joachim’s pages five days after the deadline, despite that Joachim had send his pages in due time. Again it must be the Danish Postal service - or the German? - we can claim. The only section that is missing is the Unofficial Radio! I think that the rest of the contents speaks for itself, namely worth reading.

With those words, I wish you all the very Best of 73’s, hoping to see many of you at the end of April.

The front page picture does not shows the DSWCI chairman and Editor-in-chief on their way to the next AGM. But it could well be!

When these words are nTitten Spring has come to my part of the world with plenty of sunshine and temperatures around 18 degrees C. It ought to be exact the right wcathcr for feeling happy. but who can feel happy when madness reigns the world’? For this edition 1 have only a few logging% but hopefully you can USC them. Here they come:

ARGENTINA: 930 kHz, Lf’7Radto 7ix~rnnn. San Miguel del Tucuman was reported on this ne\t frequency (es 11 IO kHz).

970 ~HL, i,?‘Z AM 970 Ln Cbz de /cl Lthertad. Cordoba former radio General PaL. (MA(‘)

AUSTRIA: The only independent radio station in Belgrade was closed by Serbian authorities last week. As well as continuing with extended news bulletins via the web, B-92 started nightly broadcasts \ia a mediumwave transmitter near Vienna. the frequency is 1476 kHz and the time is 20 15 UTC. The broadcast of 5-92 include several English news segments. Around 12 stations elsewhere in Serbia are also broadcasting the statlon’s output. (SW via MWC E-list in Medi DX news # SO)

CHILE: CH106 Radto Minerrn, 1060 kHz, after 57 years is closing now the station on 1 April 1999 at 0300 UTC with ‘gongs’. They sell the station due to the economic problems. according to comments b\. the director Mr. Hcmani Banda. AAer this hour. will began its transmissions. the new station that will broadcast on 1060 kHz called ‘Rtrdio Santa Marta de Gttadelupe’. a religious station. (GW

FALKLAND ISLANDS: New transmitter and more power for FIBS. A structure soon to qualify as the tallest in the Islands \\ ill in the near future mean local radio will return to mediumwave, and on increased power. KMZ Electronics are prescntl? installing a 132 metre high mast at the west end of Mount William which will radiate a 15 kW signal Island wide. The transmitter was purchased in Santiago, Chile, and a team of four professional riggers from Santiago are now assisting Mario Zuvic of KMZ Electronics to erect the mast and mstall the t.ransmittcr. FIBS were taken off the present medium wave transmitter in December 97 and replaced totally by BFBS 2 which will continue to broadcast. It will bc approximately one month before the transmitter IS ‘up and working’ and some time after that before transmissrons on the new frcqucncy will begin. (SW in Medi DX News # 49)

GERMANY: At the end of March a new 500 kW telefunken-brand transmitter for Deutschkandradin Berlin on 177 kHz will inaugurate at the Zehlendorf site north from Berlin (usually listed as Oranienburg, a town some 15 km west from the Zchlendorf village). Currently they operate still the ancient transmitter installation from 1956, a combination of three 250 kW PA stages, each using four SRW-357 lubes.

The new commercial Power-Radio Mecklenhur@‘orpommern originally intended to start broadcasting at May 4th, but these date was postponed by half a year, also due to technical difficulties: A first attempt to

reactivate the old 20 kW transmitter at Restock-Stadtwcidc nftcr qcars of silence resulted in a complete failure, looks like they have to replace it b! a new one. Power-Radio will broadcast from Restock and Neubrandenburg-Helpterbcrg on 558 kHL with 20 kW each. from Wiibbeiin (usually listed as Schwerin, although the facilities arc situated some 25 km south from this town) on 999 kHz Gth 20 kW too, and from Putbus (Riigen Island) on 531 kHz (no longer 729 kHz, as original]!, announced) with 10 kW.

(KL via PP in Mcdi DX News # 50)

ITALY: The following MW stations have been reactivated aflcr a long period of silence: Rndio Studio X (Momibmo) and Radio Sonktchino (BoloLma) are now active on 1584 kHz. (FM in Mcdi DX News # 49)

NETHERLANDS: Today the Dutch government gave permission to build two antennatowers 3C kilometres off the coast of Ihe Netherlands. the towers will be used b\ Delta Radio to transmit their programmes to theUK. probably on longwal-c. Earlier Delta Radio tried to get permission to build antennatowers in the Netherlands near the town of Apeldoom. this pemlission was not gi%-en due to mam protests of people living in the neighbourhood but also’due to em’ironmental reasons because tho antennatowers will be 400 (!) meters in height. The government has no possibilities to stop the building of the towers in the North Sea. even the dcalife will suffer from the electromagnetic currents and the birds from the towers. (MvA in Medi DX News #I 49)

Finally one of the new private Dutch medium wave stations <are due to hit the aimah-es. ~tfo,r All4 is scheduled to commcncc broadcasting late April or early May 1999 on the frequency of 1557 ~HL w-ith a power of 2.5 kW. Perhaps only 1 kW in the beginning. Format will be all news and a dad> English broadcast is planned - probably al 1X00-1900 hrs local time. the transmitter site will be somewhere near Amsterdam.

(SHN in Medi DX News it 50)

UNITED KINGDOM: Things are moving fast on the Low Power AM stations here in the UK. 4s many as several dozen stations arc likclg to appear soon on a limited number of channels so catching stations will gel increasingly more difficult as stations activate. For instance 1350 kHz is now used bv Radio Cave11 but shortly Hospital Radio Yare at the James Paget Hospital, gorleston, great Yarmouth will join them on the same channel. I am reliably advised that Hospital Radio Crawley nil1 appear on 1287 kHz. My sources also indicate that the most widely assign& LPAM channels will bc 1287, 1350 and 1386 kHz. From a DXcrs point of view the latter two channels will make inleresting listening overnight provided stations produce their own programmes and don’t just rclg a sustaining service. Keep your cars open for this ne\\ uavc of stations (SW)

I can add to Steve’s report that. in addition to a number of hospital radio stations. 1 watt LPAM freely-radiating transmitters arc also being licensed by Radio Authority at several colleges/universities and also possibly at a number of UK army bases and even churches. Do particularly cheek 1278. 1350 and 1386 kHz over the coming weeks and let us know if you hear anything as official information is hard to come by and station operators are being told not to publicise their broadcasts outside the hospital/college etc. for fear of upsetting the local commercial stations...! YUGOSLAVIA: Pristina on 14 13 l&z really seems to be off the air. My monitoring brought negative results during the last few days (I heard the station for the last time some two weeks ago). According to reports seen on TV the city is partly in ruins, so maybe also the transmitter site has been damaged..

CANADA Three of the remain& four(?) local SW outlets have been propagating into the UK and two have replied with QSL’s and information : CHNX 6130 broadcasts from facilities in Halifax Nova Scotia with a power of 100 Watts. The antenna is a dipole with the axis of maximum radiation on a bearing of approx 065” - 245”. We broadcast 24 hrs a day simulcasting Oldies 96 CHNS (960 MW). Although not stated by Wayne S. Harvey, Chief Engineer, the transmitter is using USB only.

CFRX 6070 Toronto began broadcasting in 1937. The present transmitter of 1 kW power was commissioned on Dec.31 1983 and uses one 50’ vertical tower antenna radiating omni-directionally and is installed at Clarkson-ONT, co,sited with CFRB 1010 MW. The programming is a simulcast of CFRB’s, except for a CFRX ID that runs twice an hour. Thanks to the’ Ontario DX Association who issue QSL’s.

CBC Radio One is heard on 6160 from tune in around 0730 until covered by D.Welle-ATG at 0900 and this is thought to be coming via CKZN St.Johns-NF rather than CKZU Vancouver which also uses this freqcy. Both Passport & WRTH’99 show CKZN active only 0930-0500. Weekdays carries “CBC Overnight”, re- broadcasts of English pgms of Channel Africa, YLE (mcl their weekend Latin on Mondays) D.Welle & ORF, as heard. NG CHINA CR1 transmissions moved to a number of new higher frequencies 9n March 10, or possibly one or two days earlier. BBC Firings & Hirings from Mark Veldhuis, the Netherlands

Two remarkable things have taken place at Bush House during the past fortnight It closed down its German service, which had been on the air since the Munich crisis of 1938 and whose decadent wartime jazz so infuriated Hitler.

The day before, it suddenly expanded most of its language services for the Balkans. Overnight, Albanian broadcasts went up from nine hours a week to 17, Serbian from IO to 15, Greek from L I to 14, Bulgarian from 14 to 16 and Macedonian from four to fike. hot for the first time, the BBC World Service - external v,ing of what is often regarded as a lumbering monolith - reacted speedily to an international emergency. It did so in the Falklands, the Gu!f and RLvanda, and has again nobi

Just as firings are more dramatic than hirings, job losses more emotional than job creation, so the BBC gets bigger headlines when it axes language services than when it creates them. Over the past decade it has killed off its Finnish, German, Japanese, French for Europe, and Portuguese for Europe services, but also launched Azeri. Kinyarwanda (for central africa), Macedonian and Ljzbek, and, following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia at-ound I99 1, replaced its former Serbo-Croat sel-\/ice with a Serbian one and a Croatian one So births and deaths are about equal.

llore significant is the fact that the BBC’s list of the languages in which it broadcasts (which tends to be drawn up with Foreign Oflice guidance) is usually the most reliable guide to which countries are currently regarded as actually or potentially important and volatile

51) Years of SW broadcasting from Radio Denmark

Although a little old information. 1 think it is still interesting for vou to kno\\ thal..

On October 1. 1948 Danish King Frederik IX inaqurated the Danish Shortwave Broadcasts In a commemorative programme of “Stil ind” on Radio Denmark broadcast via the Norwegian transmitters. Erik Koie on September 26 1998 told about the 50 !‘ear long history of Radio Denmark

For many years the transmitter was at Herstedvester west of Copenhagen, but this station is now dismantled and the programmes broadcast from Norway., at least until 2003. Besides recordings from the speech of the King in 1948, Erik also played recordings from the DSWCI programme “DX-Window” produced in 1967-7 I by the late Christian Flagstad and DX-ers from Copenhagen. Don Phillips

It was 8* March at about 20.00 as I sat at my computer. listening to 15475.8 kHz. First there was some accordion music. then some heavy pops. then some soulful romantic songs. It was Antarctica with their new transmitter. coming in so well that I spared a thought for some of our fraternity who will no longer listen to it. as it is “no longer DX.” I am aware that Radio New Zealand has never been regarded with the same enthusiasm by Dxers since it upgraded from its old 7.5 kW transmitters.

But this logging brought back to me the same thrill that my first adventures in Short Wave Listening gave me. I turned to my computer and loaded C&clock - a programme which provided a world map to allow me to look at the signal path. It was wonderful that on this winter evening in the northern hemisphere that I could eaves drop on activity at the south pole. Although my audio quality was room- listening-good, it was nothing compared with modem possibilities. If, God forbid, there were to be a natural disaster or a small war on the south pole. CNN would send

and the shortwave DXer know something that nobody else, who does not already know it, could possibly understand.

As I have been preparing the next part of this column, I have been spinning the dial of my radio - something I regularly do to provide a background sound. I tuned to 6.940 kHz without much thought and enjoyed the thin reed and string music and gentle chanting. Yes, you’re ahead of me. At 1930 I heard an identification, Radio Fana. A first for me.

Which logically leads me to think of my antennas. I have had a couple of requests to say something about my set-up here in Bridlington. It is nothing spectacular. Never do 1 get a wild elk wandering into my lengthy beverages, only perhaps a sea gull observing me condescendingly as it lands on my antenna pole.

As 1 explained when I moved here a couple of years ago. I put a lot of effort into finding the best compromise for antennas. For, in the domestic environment, an antenna has to be a compromise, and its design a bit of a black art. Antenna theory is simple in perfect conditions, but in real gardens near real telephone wires with irregular ground planes, water pipes, local interference sources. (and it must be said) aesthetic demands of wives or loved ones. you have to cope with what is acceptable.

1 have reproduced a picture of our house. and retouched my antenna wires. I use two antennas. Antenna B is about 35 metres and runs through a plastic hoop fixed to the top of an aluminium pole mounted on the side of the house. It then goes to another pole further down the garden and is secured near to the ground. Antenna A can be seen to also use the rnain pole. It makes its way to the ground at the entrance to the front garden, which is approached from the right hand side of the picture. In all antenna A is about 25

- -A - . . ” . . . . & . .

from my kitchen I would be able to see live pictures of the undauntable Christ&me Amanpour describing the event.

DXing is fishing with a rod and line, not a trawler. I live on the Yorkshire coast, and am well aware that fishing from the beach is still very popular, I am always amused to see a row of men casting long rods in the cold wind trying to catch a fish very popular in this part of the world called cod. Not 20 metres away is a seaside shop selling cooked cod and chips. For me it would be preferable to put away my cold fishing rod, buy some cooked fish and chips and go home. But these fishermen

metres in length. Both antennas are buffered by using long wire baluns. One I bought at an AGM about eight years ago. The other has been donated by Wian Stienstra. I have mounted the baluns in the bushes at the front of the house - I have exaggerated their size in the photograph.

Similarly I have emphasised the width of the 50 Ohm coax which drops down to the ground to lay on the grass. and thence up into my listening room.

Below each of the baluns I have driven a metal stake into the ground, not as a method of laying to rest the Bridlington vampire, but as a way of earthing the coaxial

cable. It is important to do this. or much ofthe screening effect of the coax will be lost.

In the house, in the listening room. I have connected both antenna wires, by using normal phono plugs ‘and sockets into an aluminium switching box. I use cheap miniature toggle switches to enable each of two antennas to be connected to either of my receivers. Of course, if I were designing to a high specification, I would have used BNC plugs and sockets and coaxial relays. The cheap components I have used do not waste any appreciable amount of signal. From the switching box, I again use coax to connect to the 50 Ohm input sockets on my receivers.

Which is why, I believe, I am able to pick up Radio Fana while tapping away at my computer. Only when my daughter plays her electronic organ can I hear electrical noise from this house. There is a certain amount of television interference from some of my neighbours, but this is where I find the two antennas so useful. In many respects they perform identically. Switching from one to the other regularly gets me away from noise problems. The longer one is generally better on medium wave while the other seems quieter for Latin American tropical bands signals.

There has been much written about the use of long wire baluns. The word balun is simply a joining together of the first syllables of the words “balanced” and “unbalanced”: used to describe an item which attempts to convert a high unspecified impedance of a simple long wire into a lower. more manageabie. impedance suitable fol feeding into coaxial (screened) cable. There are long arguments to sumest that the baluns sold to Dxers are crude devices which could only theoretically do their job at on particular frequency.

Fans of the balun say that as they utilise an electromagnetic transformer action. the electrostatic component of the signal is reduced. (blast “static” is electrostatic by definition). Others point to the fact that the) are a good way of discharging high voltages f&n long wire antenna to reduce the risks in stormy weather. This may all be true. I have always noticed an insertion loss when using a balun, the S meter always cuts the signal down a little from what it would have been by simply connecting the long wire straight to the receiver.

If you would like to contribute anythins to this discussion about useful antennas for the domestic environment. do please let me know. Or if you are a member of the sizeable proportion of the world’s population who know more than 1 do about baluns, do share your views. You will notice that I have changed my Internet provider. There are several free ones in the UK. I am now with Tesco, the large supermarket chain. So far it has worked fine. No advertisements, no free coupons with every 100 e-mails, no long waits at the check-out!

Comments to the EDXC Land List

From DSWCI member, Roberto PavaneIIo, Italy. I have received the following comment:

“The 1998 Edition of the EDXC Radio Countries List 1998, a review by Henk van der Laan and Maarten van Deli?. on page 24 of the March issue of SWN. Henk and Maarten wrote: “but is there any such activity in Busingen and Campione?“.

Yes, in Campione there is radio activity. The private radiostation International Classic has in Campione one transmitter operating on 102.800 Mhz and the Italian public television RAI has three television transmitters in Campione: One for RAI 1 on the channel E2, one for RAI 2 on channel 4 1 and one for RAT 3 on channel 64. “

From Anker Petersen. the following comment: At the NorDX contest, I had the opportunity to compare the 1998 edition against the 1992 edition of the EDXC Land List.

Besides those remarks made by Olle Alm in the beginning of the list. I found that Transkei is now a p‘art of South Africa. and that Guantanamo Bay is now a part of Cuba. (.annoying. because I have heard the latter with AFRTS!).

Furthermore Kyrgyzistan has been added (forgotten in the 1992 edition?).

141~ personal score is now 239 countries heard, and 198 countries verified.
