LSU's women's basketball program will host the Katrina Relief Basketball Classic in New Orleans aspart of "LSU Operation Rebound" with all the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity and the Friends of NewOrleans Recreation Department (NORD).

LSU will face Louisiana Tech in New Orleans Arena on Dec. 30, 2006 as the center point of a weekendof events to benefit "LSU Operation Rebound."

"LSU Operation Rebound" is the a brainchild of LSU head coach Pokey Chatman, a native of the NewOrleans area, and was created to help the Lady Tigers basketball program rebuild Louisiana.

In addition to the game, a banquet and auction will be held during the Katrina Relief Basketball Classicweekend.

Along with the funds raised by the game, banquet and auction, the Pokey Chatman Foundation has cre-ated the Pokey Chatman Century Club, an organization of 100 people each contributing $1,000 to join.

The Lady Tigers program, along with the LSU Athletics Department, the Tiger Athletic Foundation, LSUSports Properties and the Fast Break Club, has set a goal to raise at least $150,000 for the two charities.

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller and has built and rehabilitated more than 200,000 houses, shelteringmore than one million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

Friends of NORD was founded in 1994 as a non-profit corporation created to increase community involvement by providing volunteer servicesand interest in recreational activities and to raise funds for special projects and improvements for the New Orleans Recreation Department.

BACK-TO-BACK SEC TITLESTHREE STRAIGHT NCAA FINAL FOURS

Page 6: K?I?K =@E8C =FLIJ98:B$K'$98:B J

Q: Well, two years, two Final Fours and two SEC titles. What can youdo to top that?

PC: When you begin with the end in mind, you set the standard for the high-est level of preparation. And that's all I can ever ask of everyone involved.Players, coaches, trainers, managers, and support staff. If that culminatesinto titles and or championships, then we're moving in the right direction. Ifit doesn't, I still believe we're moving in the right direction.

Q: You lost almost 50% of your offensive production with the depar-ture of the three seniors. How will you be able to make up for that?

PC: Not only did we lose 50 percent of our scoring we lost one of the bestdefenders in the nation in Scholanda Hoston. To fill the offensive void wewill first look to be a more productive offensive transition team. Once in thehalfcourt Sylvia Fowles' game will continue to garner attention and with theemergence of Ashley Thomas, continual development of Kristen Morris andadditions of Porsha Phillips and Mesha Williams, I envision the much need-ed depth in the post to help with spacing for our perimeter players. Theperimeter attack, lead by Erica White will get a huge boost from transferKatie Antony and freshman Allison Hightower. Khalilah Mitchell, MarianWhitfield and Quianna Chaney are all players capable of getting the jobdone for us and RaShonta LeBlanc is the point guard that started our marchfor another SEC title and Final Four appearance. The opportunity and expe-rience exist for a number of individuals to step up and fill the void. It will beexciting watching this team grow and develop.

Q: Probably the biggest question the fans and the media have is howwill you replace Seimone Augustus?

PC: The irony of talking about replacing Seimone is I can take a familiarchapter out of her book. And that was the chapter on TEAMMATES.Seimone's game, as well as LSU Lady Tigers Basketball has always beenabout team. That's how you replace the most storied player in the history ofyour program.

Q: Last season two point guards emerged. Now that they are bothhealthy, how will you handle the position?

PC: It was great having RaShonta and Erica competeevery day in practice. It resulted in 14 Straight wins. But more importantly when RaShonta was injured,

Erica was ready, and the result was success forour team. Players decided who play with their

performance in practice and games.

Q: You lost one of the best defensiveplayers in the nation with the depar-

ture of Scholanda Hoston. How will youtry to replace her?

PC: It is extremely difficult to duplicate whatScholanda brought to the table as an individ-ual from the physical aspects. Her length,

speed, and anticipation is something that is nottaught, just enhanced. Physically, AllisonHightower brings a lot of the same attributes tothe table, but will only be a freshman, thereforemaking the adjustment to college basketball. However, several returning players includingRaShonta and Khalilah, will be anxious tohelp us become an even better defensiveteam than last year.

Q: How is Sylvia Fowles shoulder andhow much will it affect her for thisupcoming season?

PC: Sylvia is recovering well from heroff-season shoulder surgery and itshouldn't have any affect on theupcoming season. We were fortu-nate that her injury was not as seri-ous as initially anticipated.

Q: Sylvia showed moments oftotal domination last season. What does she have to do thisyear to maintain that dominancefor and entire season?

PC: When Sylvia maintains “the men-tal,” she will dominate. However, that'seasier said than done for any player. That's why the mental is to physical as fouris to one. It's almost unfair that what shebrings to the table often times goes unnoticedbecause it can't truly be appreciated. She takes upspace, she screens, she blocks shots, she alters shots, she dives on thefloor, she rebounds, she leads the team in deflections and she scores. We're pleased with her progression but won't ever be satisfied. Neither willSylvia. That is what makes her special.

Q: Describe how important a player like Ashley Thomas is to your pro-gram?

PC: I think Ashley's performance in our Elite Eight matchup againstStanford best signifies her importance to our team. She has a defensivepresence, energy, the ability to chase down loose balls, or can score amuch needed basket. She's blue collar, she's consistent.

Q: It was hard enough to repeat as SEC Champions, but how difficultdo you think it will be to pull off the three-peat?

PC: The nature of the question actually provides the answer of how com-petitive it is in the league. We will prepare at the highest level and we willcompete at the highest level.

Q: The two freshmen coming to the program are highly regardedaround the nation. What type of influence on the season do you expectthem to have?

PC: I expect both Allison and Porsha to immediately improve our basketballteam. They have the mindset and attitude that will allow us to help themreach their full potential. Porsha has the ability and wing span to be effec-tive around the basket on both ends of the floor. And Allison can play anyposition on the perimeter at the same time she takes great pride in her abil-ity to defend.

Q: Mesha Williams is the first JUCO players LSU has had in a fewyears. What do you expect from her this season?

PC: Mesha's a mobile power forward that loves to rebound the basketballand runs the floor like a guard. She will give us more quality depth in thepost with her ability to be a presence on either end.

There are few coaches in basketball history that can match the success that Pokey Chatman hasenjoyed in her first two full years as head coach of the LSU Lady Tigers basketball program.

In her two seasons, LSU has advanced to two NCAA Final Fours, won two SoutheasternConference regular season titles and earned a No. 1 seed in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments. In fact, in Chatman's first 50 games as a head coach, she won an astonishing 47 times. That record of47-3 is the second best record after 50 games in women's basketball history.

This past season Chatman guided LSU to a 31-4 mark, including a perfect 15-0 record at homeand 11 wins against top 25 opponents. In her first season in 2004-05, Chatman led the Lady Tigers to a33-3 record with the program's best regular season record of 27-1. That season the Lady Tigers wereranked No. 1 in the polls for 11 weeks between November and March.

Chatman has not gone unrecognized for her success as a head coach. She was named the 2004-05 National Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and theWomen's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and received the Naismith Award and the VictorAward as the country's top coach. Chatman, the fourth head coach in the program's history, was alsonamed the 2005-06 SEC Coach of the Year and has earned the honor of being named the BlackCoaches Association (BCA) Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

The off season is not any less hectic for Chatman. She enters her second year serving on the 27-member WBCA Board of Directors as the BCA representative. Chatman also helped lead the 2005United States World University Games team to a gold medal as an assistant coach. With Team USA,Chatman coached with Harvard head coach Kathy Delany-Smith to win her second medal in internation-al competition, having also won a medal as a player with the 1990 USA Select Team.

Chatman, a part of LSU's program as a player and coach for 17 years, became head coach in Aprilof 2004 after the late Sue Gunter, a Hall of Fame coach and Chatman's mentor retired, but the task ofguiding the team had began before that for Chatman.

Gunter fell ill during the 2003-04 season and Chatman stepped to the front and seamlessly ledLSU to the first NCAA Final Four in school history and a second-place finish in the SEC. Chatman ledthe Lady Tigers to a 15-5 record in the absence of Gunter from the sidelines. Included in those victorieswere five wins over top 25 teams, including the school's first victory over a No. 1 seed in the NCAATournament, a 71-55 drubbing of Texas in the West Regional Semifinal prior to upsetting SEC foeGeorgia in the regional final to advance to the Final Four.

When Gunter announced she would retire after a career marked by 40 years and 708 victories,LSU athletics director Skip Bertman smartly turned to Chatman, an LSU Hall of Famer herself, and anAll-American point guard.

The call came on April 27, 2004, when Bertman named Chatman as only the fourth head coachin the history of LSU Women's Basketball.

Chatman had just completed her 13th season on the Lady Tiger staff, and her fifth as an associ-ate coach after being elevated to that position in September 1999. But in 2003-04, Chatman becamethe most famous associate coach in the country when she took on the role of acting head coach inGunter's absence, earning the BCA Coach of the Year honors for her efforts in relief.

The way Chatman guided the Lady Tigers through the second half of the season, into MarchMadness and a trip to the Final Four only added an exclamation point on what everyone already knewabout Chatman's coaching potential.

Chatman, who dazzled LSU fans for four years as LSU's starting point guard in the late 1980s andearly 1990s, developed a reputation as one of the nation's best recruiters, and one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the collegiate ranks. Chatman led LSU's recruiting efforts over nine years and as aresult, the Lady Tigers have had eight straight classes rank among the top 20 in the nation, including the2004 freshman class which featured three Parade All-Americans in Sylvia Fowles, Quianna Chaney andErica White.

Chatman helped LSU land another top incoming freshmen class in 2003, in All-American MarianWhitfield out of Georgia, Swedish National team member Hanna Biernacka and New Orleans nativeKhalilah Mitchell.

The previous years were also highly productive for Chatman. She helped the Lady Tigers landSeimone Augustus, who finished her LSU career as a two-time National Player of the Year and theWNBA's No. 1 draft pick. Chatman also helped sign Aiysha Smith, a Kodak Junior College All-Americanand the 2003 first-round pick of the Washington Mystics, New Orleans native and current WNBA playerDoneeka Hodges and Temeka Johnson, a first-round pick of the Washington Mystics and the 2005WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Chatman was also responsible for bringing DeTrina White, one of the top 15 rated players in thecountry in 1998, who went on to become the 1998-99 National Freshman of the Year.

Since joining the Lady Tigers staff, Chatman has tutored some of the finest guards in the country.Marie Ferdinand was a 2001 Kodak All-American selection and a finalist for the prestigious NaismithAward, given to the nation's best collegiate player. In addition to averaging over 21 points a game hersenior season, she was a finalist for the Shooting Guard of the Year Award given out by ESPN.Ferdinand, a first round draft pick in the WNBA, is currently playing for the San Antonio Silver Stars andis a three-time WNBA All-Star.

Chatman also worked with Cornelia Gayden, a three-time All-SEC pick who holds the NCAArecord for 3-point goals in a single-game with 12 against Jackson State. Other standouts under Chatmaninclude Elaine Powell, a two-time first-team All-SEC selection, Pietra Gay, an All-SEC pick in 1997, andLatasha Dorsey, a first team Defensive All-American in 1999. Powell was the starting point guard in the2003 World Champion Detroit Shock, while Gay was a member of the 1997 WNBA World ChampionHouston Comets.

Before being named to assistant coach prior to the 1992-93 season, Chatman served one season,1991-92, as a student assistant with the Lady Tigers. Chatman, a Kodak All-American point guard forthe Lady Tigers in 1991, graduated from Hahnville High School in 1987. She received her Bachelor'sdegree from LSU in December of 1991.

During her four years with the Lady Tigers, Chatman started all but one game and was the school'sall-time assists and steals leader with 570 and 346, respectively when she finished her career. Chatmanheld the assist record until the 2003-04 season when current Lady Tigers point guard Temeka Johnsonpassed her coach for the top spot. She also finished fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,826 points.Chatman played in the NCAA Tournament four times and posted a four-year record of 82-38.

Chatman was a three-time All-SEC selection and in 1991 led the Lady Tigers to their first-everSEC Tournament title. Chatman was named MVP of the 1991 SEC Tournament, also a first for LSU.

Chatman capped her career at LSU by being selected to the prestigious Kodak All-American teamfollowing her senior season in 1991. Chatman is one of only five Lady Tigers named to the Kodak team.Chatman set a total of 20 school records while at LSU with five of those records still standing.

Chatman was inducted into the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame in the spring of 1999.
