11 March 2015 Just Think: Why is controlling New Orleans important for our country? Did we have control of New Orleans in the late 1700s / early 1800s? Today, I will be able to explain how events in Europe influenced the U.S. in the early 1800s. I will also be able to tentatively explain how the U.S. acquires the Louisiana Territory. Turn in chapter 9 assignments (9.1, 9.3, 9.4 and poster) 10.1 is past due (10 pts). Check your current grade, (if you don’t like your grade: turn in the assignments, study, and ask for help…not during current class time).

Just Think: Why is controlling New Orleans important for our country? Did we have control of New Orleans in the late 1700s / early 1800s?

The French, led by their ambitious general Napoleon Bonaparte, agree to the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso of 1800 giving them control of the Louisiana Territory.

Europe Influences the U.S.

Napoleon becomes Emperor of France in 1804.

He continues his costly conquest of Europe.

Haitian Revolt led by Toussaint L’Ouverture occurred in 1801: Fallout. French forces are able to regain control of the island, but

eventually the Haitian win and declare their independence from France.

Haiti was France’s most profitable colony in the Western Hemisphere (Sugar)

Remember, Napoleon is leading a major war in Europe and needs money.
