Breaking News: Forever Lives the
Tree!By: Emily Soto
Tuesday night, August 24, 2010,
there was a storm with heavy rains
and strong winds. The tree outside
Mrs. Nair’s room was blown down
during the storm. The school is very
lucky that it didn’t fall towards the
classroom. Some people wonder what
we would do if the big tree in the front
of the school fell towards the
classroom.
Juliana says, “I will sort of be
happy because we wouldn’t have
school and I wouldn’t have to do
language. I would also be sad because
I would miss the tree.”
When the tree bloomed, it was very
pretty, although the smell was
appaling, Rose and Erin say, “It’s very
sad, but on the bright side it won’t
smell.”
The tree will always be in our hearts.

The Ice Cream Social was a fun activity where parents, teachers, pupils, friends, and family
all got together at the school and socialized. Students served ice cream, beverages, and
listened to music. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed getting to know each other.
“The Ice Cream Social was very successful. I think the children enjoyed it because there was
irrigation and they could play in the water!” said Mrs. Nair. This was a sweet, sweet social
that MIS will never forget!
MEET THE EDITORS: ERIN AND ROSE!
Let’s meet the editors, Erin and Rose! The two 8th graders hold the
most important role in the newspaper. They have been doing a great job
keeping people in line and things in order. Erin says, “It’s really fun to
do this because I get to see what the other students are capable of.”
Students’ ThoughtsThe students have great faith that Erin and Rose will succeed not only in
this issue, but in the issues to come.

Meet Mrs. Karen, an awesome science teacher.
When she was a child, she wanted to be an
astronaut or doctor. But, later she didn’t want to be
an astronaut because she realized that she gets
motion sickness. When she was older, she went to
college, but she had 15 years left and decided not
to finish. She has been teaching for 15 years, and
says she loves it. “It is fun because the class gets to
do cool experiments, and I get to make a difference
in my students’ lives by teaching them facts and
ideas.”
Some of her pastimes are traveling, golfing with
her family, and going to the movie theaters. Her
best talents are creating new ideas, and making
new things. “I wake up at night and come up with
good ideas,” she says. The students are very happy
to have Mrs. Karen as their new science teacher.

The Year Has Gone By
The year has gone by,
It can be sad and depressing
Or it can be happy and cheery
The world can come to war,
But the year has gone by.
And a new one has begun.
But war still goes on
And soon peace comes.
Peace is here all year,
Peace is here ‘till the end of life.
And we are here, too.
And I am glad.

Flowers in the Sunset
Flowers in green glass
With a ribbon around.
No forest, no ocean,
No fields of grass.
A single small table
In a sunset of vibrant colors.
Only a scene found in
A story or fable.
Vivid flowers from purple to red
Of buds and leaves,
Not a single one dead.
On the small table;
The vase is placed
It’s beauty not hidden.
By glass, not cased.

Homework! Oh
Homework!
Homework! Oh, homework!
I hate you! You stink!
I wish I could wash you
away in the sink.
If only a bomb
would blow you to bits.
Homework! Oh, homework!
You’re giving me fits.
I’d rather take a bath
with a man eating shark,
or wrestle a lion
alone in the dark,
eat spinach and liver,
pet ten porcupines,
than tackle the homework
my teacher assigns.
Homework! Oh, homework!
You’re last on my list.
I simply can’t see
why you even exist.
If you just disappeared
it would tickle me pink.
Homework! Oh, homework!
I hate you! You stink!

I Can’t Come to
School Today
I can’t come to school today
An avalanche of books trapped me
in my room
I quote the 33rd reason not to have
homework,
My room is flooded with papers
If only I learned how to swim
I can’t even find my way out
There’s a new flu I have
You wouldn’t believe me if I told you
But I have homework-itis.
I told you, you wouldn’t believe me.
I have sags in my eyes
From staying up late doing
homework.
I have tape, paper, gum, pencils, and
pens in my hair.
I’m nailed in bed by pencils and
pens.
What? You want to talk to my mom?
You don’t believe me? Fine!
What? It’s Saturday!
Okay, then good-bye, I have to go
out and play.

! IT WAS A COLD AND
SNOWY NIGHT IN NEW YORK.
EVERYONE WAS IN THEIR HOME
ASLEEP BUT ONE CHILD. HE
HAD BEEN AWAKE ALL NIGHT
LONG, AND HAD NO HOME
AND NO FAMILY.
He sleeps under a bench in
the park and thinks about
what tomorrow is going to
be like. During the day, he
would hide in one of the
alleys, so he wouldn’t be
found and put into an
orphanage.
" It was a frosty night, the
snow came down hard, his
nose turned as red as the
berries that grew on the
bushes during spring. His
face and fingers turned
purple and blue. His little
toes and feet were buried
under the snow. In the
distance, he saw
something. He was scared
and too cold to see what it
was, but he had the
courage to say something
to it. His lips were as dry as
a rusty wheel. He hadn’t
spoken to anything in days,
and he trembled while he
spoke. He asked who it was.
It looked at him and
started coming up to him.
He was frightened, but
when he saw what it was,
he felt a little better.
" “It’s a dog,” he said to
himself, and the dog
cuddled up to him and laid
on the boy’s little cold feet
all night, and he fell asleep
with the dogs help of
keeping him warm.
" It was the next morning,
and the dog was gone. He
wondered where it was, but
he just figured that it went
to its owner. He went to the
alley and found the dog
sitting there waiting for the
little boy. The dog had
brought him food from the
bakery a block away. The
boy didn’t want to steal it,
but he hadn’t eaten for
days. He smelt the fresh
loaf of bread and wanted it
very badly so he took it.
The dog stared at him
blankly. The boy wasn’t
sure what the dog wanted,
but he offered the dog a
piece of bread and the dog
ate it quickly.. The boy
thought to himself and
decided to call him Boney.
The boy felt that there was
something wrong, and
decided to name himself.
He wondered what a good
name would be for him. He
called himself Harley.
That’s a good name, he
thought.
" Harley and Boney stayed
together for years and were
happy together. But, the
dog got sick and was going
to die. The dog was in
misery, and the boy was
sad for the dog. He had to
take him out of his misery.
Harley got a knife out,
tears running down his
face. It was the only friend
he had ever had. “I’m not
ready to do this,” he
thought, but he lifted up his
hand and got ready until
someone shot and killed
the boy and the dog.
! Eventually, autumn
came and leaves buried
them. Then the winter
came and buried them in
snow. Then in the spring,
the grass buried them,
almost as if they were
never there. But, they are
part of the seasons.
