ARCANIA is a brand of bedpan washers dedicated to the hospital market and is manufactured by SOFINOR S.A.S. A family owned company founded in 1961, SOFINOR S.A.S. specializes in the manufacturing of stainless steel equipment.
By systematically integrating considerations of hygiene, ergonomics and safety into its designs, ARCANIA is today an important player in the global market for bedpan washers. This creative approach, which takes into account both hygiene and technical aspects is possible thanks to the manufacturing expertise of our single production site located in the north of France.
The bedpan washer CLINOX 3A AUTO meets the requirements of both European Directive 93/42/CEE (CE0197) and ISO 15883-3. Its disinfection cycle has been approved by the PASTEUR INSTITUTE in Lille (France).

Versatility and volume of washing
To supplement washing and disinfecting equipment and in order to respond to the diversity of user’s needs, tailored accessories have been developed to optimise washing capacity and to accommodate a wide range of equipment (for example cleaning buckets, glasses, urine bottles, toilet seat risers).
Top loading and sluice function
The first refinement of the CLINOX 3A AUTO is its top loading facility: its wide opening makes the ARCANIA bedpan washer highly ergonomic. Moreover, the CLINOX 3A AUTO is very hygienic in its operation – the washer has a sluice function with a flushing system. This replaces the traditional sluice, thereby freeing space inside the washer. This model automatically turns bedpans to prevent splashing and is fitted with 12 wash jets, 4 of which have a rotate function.
Space-saving
The top-opening door ensures that the space occupied by the washer is reduced to a minimum in comparison to front opening washers, which require more space for doors to open into the room. The CLINOX 3A AUTO is ideal for confined spaces. It is possible to create further space by fitting a storage rack for bedpans and urinals above the washer.

With its top-loading function, the CLINOX 3A AUTO makes it easier to empty buckets in comparison to a traditional sluice.
Moreover, regular use of the bedpan washer results in regular disinfection of the inner cavity. This forms an effective means of combating hospital-acquired infections on a daily basis.

Elimination of faeces and bodily fluids
After closing the lid, cold water is pumped into the chamber at a pressure of 4 bars through 12 jets to remove faeces. In the case of heavy soiling, increased washing power can be achieved by pressing the left pedal (intensive cycle).
Cleaning of equipment
After the cold water stage (prewash), hot water at a pressure of 4 bars is pumped into the chamber. Detergent and/or a descaler may be added at this stage, to ensure the effective removal of stains.
Thermal disinfection
After the pre-wash and hot wash, equipment is subjected to disinfection by steam which is maintained at a temperature of 85°C to 90°C, for 1 minute. This is followed by an automatic flush of cold water which reduces the steam inside the chamber. At the end of the cycle the lid will open automatically by 5cm. After 5 further minutes, the equipment will be dry due to the heat inside the unit. The lid opens automatically on applying the pedal.

Rotation method of bedpans and equipment
The main difference between manual washing and a bedpan washer is this: when using a bedpan washer there is no longer a need to note room numbers on bedpans.When a bedpan has been used, it can be taken directly to the bedpan washer to be cleaned and disinfected. As soon as a cycle has been set, a new bedpan can be taken from a wall-mounted shelf, and taken to the bedroom of the patient.This rotation method minimises the time taken to replace a soiled bedpan with a clean and disinfected one.
The storage area created by wall shelving is the therefore essential to ensuring an immediate supply of clean bedpans.
Mode of use
In order to effectively fight hospital-acquired infections, it is important to minimise manual contact with the unit.To achieve this, the fully automatic ARCANIA bedpan washer has been designed to be operated with foot pedals. The automatic model CLINOX 3A AUTO ALB04 minimises handling of bedpans thanks to its automatic return facility.Washers should ideally be located in the centre of a sluice room equipped with a hot and cold water supply, an electrical supply and a Ø 100 mm waste.

After consulting with their hygiene and operations teams, our hospital decided to invest in an ARCANIA bedpan washer. Two factors were key to this decision: the fact that the washer minimises manual handling thereby helping to prevent hospital-acquired infections, and the dual sluice and flush functions. The ease of usage of this washer is particularly appreciated by the staff who previously washed bedpans by hand, using chemicals. We also supplemented this purchase with an ARCANIA stainless steel shelving system and ARCANIA stainless steel equipment.

To optimise the efficiency of the bedpan washer, the following points should be observed:
• Avoid emptying faeces and bodily fluids into patients’ toilets. The bedpan washer is designed to contain these, (like a conventional toilet), and disposes of these automatically.
• Use lids on the bedpans while they are being transported, this will prevent splashing and ensures the convenience of staff members.
• Do not wait too long before starting a cycle. This will prevent the drying of residue on the bedpan which can compromise the effectiveness of the cleaning process.
• Use good quality bedpans. Over time, manual sponge cleaning results in small scratches on the surface of bedpans. The smooth surface of a new bedpan will optimise the removal of dirt.
• The use of a descaler or a detergent will optimise the effectiveness of the bedpan washer. A descaler will help to maintain the unit while a detergent will optimise the quality of cleaning.

Here we use bedpans less frequently than in hospital. Given that we are a small establishment, this was a significant investment for us and we were looking for a multifunction bedpan washer. We have chosen the 3A AUTO since it allows us to wash and disinfect toilet seats, bedpans and buckets directly in the tank, thanks to its multifunction accessories.
