MMA Champion Conor McGregor could not

take home a victory yesterday, but his fans in Bahrain were thrilled to see his breathtaking performance against boxer Floyd Mayweather.

The historic match was one of the most anticipated in boxing history.

The match delivered the promise, giving fans exactly what they were expecting.

MMA is hugely popular in Bahrain, growing exceptionally fast, partly thanks to the initiatives of The Supreme Council for Youth and Sports First Deputy Chairman, Bahrain Athletic Federation President and KHK MMA Organisation Founder HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s initiatives.

MMA student Tanvir Shaikh

said that he is not surprised by the result.

“It went exactly how I expected it to. I knew that only McGregor would win if he could finish the match within the first few rounds because if Mayweather stretches the fight he would have the upper hand because of his vast experience in boxing,” Tanvir said.

“Conor transitioned from MMA to boxing and it’s not easy to take home a win in the very first match as the rules are different from MMA,” Tanvir said.

“The duration of the match is also different which means the things like stamina and strategy comes into play. Despite all of this, Conor put in a great performance and the statistics speak for itself,” Tanvir said.

“He outperformed Manny Pacquiao’s statistics against Mayweather. I am happy with the performance of McGregor,

it was an interesting and unique match,” he said.

“I think if he had more time

to prepare and practice boxing, he would have fared better,” Tanvir said.

“We were not expecting McGregor to win, he was the underdog in this fight because

of his inexperience in boxing. But he did what we expected him to by giving it his all, “ said Ishaq Ahmed.

Member of the KHK MMA Ametuer team Hussain Mahdi said that despite being an MMA fighter himself he was rooting for Mayweather to win.

“Mayweather has so much experience and is a champion in the sport of boxing so he was expected to win. Regardless of this, McGregor put on a great show. He stepped up and took a chance, most people cannot do this and this is something I respect about him,” he said.

Another MMA fan Hussain Ali said that McGregor surpassed expectations by lasting ten rounds.

“It was a thrilling match, McGregor did not disappoint his fans, he made them proud by enduring that long in his debut match against such a strong opponent,” he said.

Houston

Tropical Storm Harvey unleashed catastrophic flooding in Houston

yesterday, turning streets in Texas’ largest city into raging rivers as trapped residents climbed to higher floors and the death toll rose.

Monster storm Harvey unleashed catastrophic flooding in Houston Sunday, turning streets in the largest city in Texas into raging rivers as trapped residents climbed to higher floors and the death toll crept up to at least three.

Overwhelmed emergency services warned residents to head for high ground or climb onto rooftops -- not into attics -- so they could be seen by rescue helicopters.

“It is bad and growing worse,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who added that the storm -- a huge hurricane that first crashed ashore on the Gulf Coast late Friday -- had inflicted billions of dollars in damage.

US President Donald Trump, who was spending the weekend at the

Camp David presidential retreat, said he would visit the Lone Star State as soon as he could do so “without causing disruption.”

“The focus must be on life and safety,” he said in a series of tweets about the disaster, his first major domestic challenge since taking office in January.

At least three people have died since Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, spawning tornadoes and lashing east and central Texas with torrential rains.

In Houston, a woman drowned when she left a car which had stalled in high water, city mayor Sylvester Turner said. Another man was found dead in a flooded Wal-Mart parking lot in Galveston, officials confirmed.

Local officials said Saturday that one person was killed when a house caught fire in the Rockport area, where Harvey made landfall with sustained winds of 130 miles (215 kilometers) per hour.

“This event is unprecedented &

all impacts are unknown & beyond anything experienced. Follow orders from officials to ensure safety,” the National Weather Service said on Twitter. Rain measured in feet

The National Weather Service said about two feet (60 centimeters) of rain fell in Houston and nearby Galveston in a 24-hour period.

“If the highest floor of your home becomes dangerous ... get on the roof!” Houston’s emergency management agency warned in a bulletin.

Flooding was expected to worsen as the most powerful storm to hit the United States mainland since 2005 lingers over the area.

“This appears to be either the worst or one of the worst floods Houston has ever had. We are measuring it not in inches but in feet,” Abbott told CBS’s “Face the Nation” show.

Harvey slowly weakened as it advanced, but it had the power to rip

off roofs, flip mobile homes and leave hundreds of thousands of people in the dark on the Gulf Coast, home to some of the country’s most important oil refineries.

Hobby International, one of Houston’s two airports, announced that all flights were canceled “due to standing water on runways,” while George Bush International was operating at limited capacity.

The city’s Ben Taub hospital was being evacuated after basement flooding caused power problems, local officials said.

Abbott said National Guard troops were deployed overnight in Houston, using high-clearance vehicles to help with rescues in inundated areas of the city of 2.3 million. Boats and helicopters also were being deployed.

The Coast Guard has so far rescued at least 100 people from the air.

Search and rescue operations were also underway in devastated coastal communities including Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas

and Corpus Christi, a city of some 325,000 people, Abbott said.

In Victoria, a town just north of Rockport, residents were shocked by the storm’s intensity.

“If I knew it was going to be what it came to be, I might have left sooner,” local resident Robby Villa told AFP.Oil industry prepared

Coastal Texas is a fast-growing area, with some 1.5 million people moving into the region since 1999. It is also home to a large number of oil refineries and a number of major ports.  US authorities said about 22 percent of crude production in the Gulf of Mexico, accounting for more than 375,000 barrels a day, was shut down as of Friday.

But Abbott said the oil industry was well prepared. “They hunkered down and were able to contain the facilities, and they have the ability to ratchet up back up there quickly,” he said on Fox News Sunday, predicting a “one- or two-week downturn.”

Beirut

Lebanese authorities yesterday located the remains of eight

people they believe to be soldiers kidnapped three years ago by the Islamic State group along the restive eastern border with Syria.

The announcement came hours after the army declared a pause in its nine-day assault on IS in exchange for information on the missing soldiers.

Head of the General Security agency Major General Abbas Ibrahim said IS fighters who had surrendered led his agency and the Lebanese army to the remains.

“We have removed the remains of six bodies. We are expecting the number to go up to eight,” he told reporters gathered in downtown Beirut.

“We believe that these remains belong to the soldiers.”

The army later released a statement saying the remains of eight bodies had been retrieved from the Jurud Arsal mountainous border area with Syria and taken to a military hospital for DNA testing.

The troops were among 30 soldiers and police kidnapped by IS and Al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate when they overran the Lebanese border town of Arsal in August 2014.

Four were killed by their captors

and a fifth died of his wounds while 16 were released in a prisoner swap in December 2015 that was also overseen by Ibrahim.

Nine troops remained missing, but on Sunday Ibrahim spoke only of

eight bodies and said he was “almost certain that the case is closed”.

He spoke to reporters after informing the families of the missing soldiers of the latest developments.

The families had gathered for hours in downtown Beirut amid blistering heat to await news of their loved ones.

They sat in tents they had pitched three years ago during protests to pressure the government to find the troops.

The army had said the missing soldiers were its “top concern”, as it launched an offensive earlier this month against an estimated 600 IS jihadists in the border region.

Before Sunday’s ceasefire, the army had squeezed IS into 20 square kilometres out of 120 held by the jihadists in the mountainous region of Jurud Ras Baalbek and Jurud al-Qaa, near the Syrian border.

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which had simultaneously launched its own assault against IS from the Syrian side of the border, also declared a ceasefire on Sunday.

Jerusalem

Palestinian officials are embarking on a project to transform a

presidential palace into a national library near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, the culture minister said yesterday.

President Mahmud Abbas and his cash-strapped administration had faced questions over the construction of the $17.5 million palace, which was initially intended as a presidential headquarters and location where foreign dignitaries could be received.

Abbas has now decided to transform the 4,700-square-metre complex into a Palestinian national library, culture minister Ehab Bessaiso said.

The complex sits on some 27,000 square metres of land. “The president believes the palace should be used for public benefit by turning it into a huge national library supervised by a board of trustees,” said Mohammed Shtayyeh, head of the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR).

Construction on the palace in the village of Surda began some five years ago and is largely complete, but it was not clear how long it would take to create the library. Its construction was paid for by the Palestinian finance ministry and PECDAR, an institution that handles donor funds.

The project, according to Director of Industrial Areas Development Directorate, Khaled Salman Al Qasimi, has commenced and is in the process of carrying out the first stage of the road network development. This will be followed by further road development and infrastructure as well as street lighting projects in 2018. Besides, the capacity of the Hidd Sewage Treatment Plant will be upgraded from 2,325 m3 / day to 6,500 m3 / day with a target completion date of late 2020.

“The focus is on bringing added value projects with good quality jobs to further support the national economy, by providing high-quality facilities and services to industrial investors,” added Al Qasimi.

In this regard, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, represented by the Industrial Areas Development

Directorate, continuously seeks to develop infrastructure in industrial areas through coordination and cooperation with various government and private bodies and institutions, such as Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs, Urban Planning and the Electricity and Water Authority to provide upgraded services to the industrial investor.

More parking spaceThe Ministry of Industry, Commerce & Tourism said that it would take necessary measures to ensure the quality of the main roads serving the industrial zones as well as

the current infrastructure in the Kingdom with the active cooperation of other service providers.

In the first stage, roads will be re-planned in the eight industrial zones to create proper parking areas for cars and trucks, which will be followed by projects to strengthen electricity and water services in the next phase by 2018.

Water network The Ministry said it is currently undertaking several projects, including but not limited to the extension of the water network in the south-western part of the South Alba

industrial area, in coordination with the Electricity and Water Authority. Approximately 50 industrial plots are expected to benefit from the project. According to the latest statistics, 96pc of industrial tenants benefit from electricity and water services.

Sewage treatment In the South Alba Industrial Area, works are progressing fast to increase the capacity of sewage treatment plant from 816 cubic meters per day to 2,500 cubic meters per day. The plant, designed to allow an overall capacity increase of up to 4000 cubic

meters per day, is expecting completion in 2018. The project will be handed over to the Ministry of Works in 2020.

Investment ParkThe initial phase of Bahrain International Investment Park is expected to finish by the beginning of 2018. The project includes reclaiming 630,000 m3 and associated infrastructure works in Salman Industrial City. The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism is currently preparing to host a number of international companies, most notably Mondelez Bahrain Biscuits W.L.L.,

formerly known as Kraft Food Company.

MEED awards The development of the sewage network and the water treatment plant serving the industrial zones of Al-Ma’ameer and North Refinery have been completed.

The project also included paving roads and lighting and replacing some main water lines in the two industrial zones. As a result of its adoption of high-quality, accurate and environmentally friendly technologies, it has won numerous awards in the Middle East, such as the MEED Quality Awards.

The future

War and chaosAyad Nasser, the property developer behind the Ouzville project, launched his project 18 months ago, inviting Lebanese and international street art-ists to beautify parts of Beirut -- Ouzai in particular.  Around 140 buildings have now been painted, with a handful done by the residents themselves.

It was once a sleepy sea-side village, with long stretches of beach that attracted sunbathers from miles away. But during Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war, civilians displaced from elsewhere built slap-dash housing in the area, often without permits, to accommodate their needs.Breaking stereotype

The project’s goal is to “break the stereotype” of Ouzai, which many in Lebanon see as a slum to be avoided. Much of the $140,000 (120,000 euros) Nasser has spent has gone on host-ing people elsewhere in Lebanon and abroad to encourage them to engage with Ouzai’s residents.

Thin news flow and upcoming Islamic

holidays towards the end of the week kept many long-term equity investors away yesterday, leaving stock markets in the Middle East vulnerable to profit- taking, but Kuwait’s index bucked the trend.

The Riyadh index retreated 0.3 per cent yesterday as some of last week’s best-performing banks fell; National Commercial Bank, which was up 5.4pc last week, lost 1.5pc.

Saudi Arabia Fertilizers Co fell 0.8pc after its board proposed a first-half cash dividend of 0.75 riyal per share, down from 1.5 riyals for the first half of 2016.

But Al Tayyar Travel Group rose 1.9pc in relatively active trade after the company said it was still “carrying on its business dealings” with the

Ministry of Education. In the UAE, Dubai’s index

fell 0.6pc as some shares favoured by speculative investors weakened, including GFH Financial Group, which lost 3.3pc.Abu Dhabi’s index slipped 0.3pc with the main drag coming from property-related shares; heavyweight Aldar Properties fell 1.3pc.

Qatar’s index declined 0.2pc, its third straight session of losses. Shipper Qatar Navigation (Milaha) fell 1.4pc but the largest listed lender, Qatar National Bank, rose 1.3pc, reversing some of last week’s losses.

In Cairo, the index fell 0.1pc in the lowest trading volume since September 2016. Six of the top 10 most valuable shares fell including Commercial International Bank , which lost 0.7pc.

Kuwait’s index rose 0.4pc in healthy volume, supported by

gains in blue chips. Boubyan Petrochemical jumped 3.8pc and Kuwait Finance House rose 1.0pc.

At the end of September, index compiler FTSE will announce its decision on whether to include Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in its secondary

emerging market index. Analysts at Arqaam Capital believe the chances for both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to meet FTSE’s inclusion criteria are high, but a bleak domestic economic outlook has been weighing on Saudi Arabia. (Reuters)

Israel has finalised a deal to purchase 17 more F-35

stealth fighters in addition to 33 of the ultra-high-tech jets already ordered, the defence ministry said yesterday.

Israel has already taken delivery of five of the jets, made by US-based Lockheed Martin, beginning in December.

It had previously announced its intent to purchase 17 more planes, bringing the total to 50.

“The F-35 will be a key element in assuring Israel’s defence both along our borders

as well as far from them,” Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said.

The cost of the next batch of 17 F-35s will be less than $100

million each, the ministry said, a significant reduction from the initial 33 planes.

Those were purchased at an average of about $110 million

each. Israel’s first jets are to be operational this year.

The single-pilot jets can carry an array of weapons and travel at a supersonic speed of Mach 1.6, or around 1,200 miles per hour (1,900 kilometres per hour).

The pilot’s helmet, at a cost of about $400,000 each, includes its own operating system, with data that appears on the visor and which is also shared elsewhere. Thermal and night vision as well as 360-degree views are possible with cameras mounted on the plane.

Forty years on,Miami

Are we alone? Forty years ago, NASA

rocket scientists sought to answer this question by launching the Voyager spacecraft, twin unmanned spaceships that would travel further than any human-made object in history.

They are still traveling. When Voyager 1 and 2

launched about two weeks apart in 1977 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, scientists knew little about the outer planets in our solar system, and could hardly imagine the scope of their upcoming space odyssey.

“None of us knew, when we launched 40 years ago, that anything would still be working, and continuing on this pioneering journey,” said Voyager project scientist Ed Stone.

Voyager’s main mission was to explore other planets including Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, but it also carried the story of humanity into deep space.

On board each Voyager is a golden record -- and record player -- that is built to last one billion years or more and contains key information about humanity and life on planet Earth, in case of an alien encounter.

The sounds include the calls of humpback whales, the Chuck Berry song “Johnny B. Goode,” Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,  a Japanese shakuhachi (a type of flute), a Pygmy girls’ initiation song, and greetings in 55 languages.

Late American astronomer Carl Sagan, one of the lead scientists involved with the project, also asked his son, Nick, who is now 46, to record his voice on it.

“Hello, from the children of planet Earth,”  says the young American boy.

A

total of 115 images are encoded in analog form, including the Great Wall of China, telescopes, sunsets, elephants, Jane Goodall with chimps, an airport, a train, a breastfeeding mother, dolphins and images of the human sex organs.

Exploring other worldsVoyager 2 launched first, on August 20, 1977, followed by Voyager 1 on September 5 on a faster, shorter trajectory that would eventually take it into the lead.

The timing of the mission took advantage of a rare planetary alignment that only happens every 175 years, along with “gravity-assist” boosts from passing by planets that minimized the fuel needed.

But Voyager faced many challenges from the start, from tight budgets to the limits of modern technology in the 1970s.

One project scientist famously recalled wrapping Voyager’s cables in aluminum foil -- the store-bought kind for kitchen use -- to protect the spacecraft from frying in heavy radiation.

Then-president Richard Nixon wanted to contain the mission to a two-p l a n e t

flyby and a five-year life, but scientists building Voyager planned for a longer mission just in case.

The cosmic duo went on to unveil planetary features unlike anything ever seen, including details about the surface of Jupiter with its raging storm the size of two Earths, known as the Great Red Spot.

“These were, at that point, better pictures than any ground-based telescopes could provide,” said Alan Cummings, a senior research scientist at Caltech who worked on the project beginning in 1973.

The Voyager mission also discovered the first active volcanoes beyond Earth on Jupiter’s moon Io, and signs of a subsurface ocean on Jupiter’s moon Europa.

‘Cherish that blue dot’Astronomy textbooks were rewritten on a wide scale, thanks to Voyager, which zoomed past Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus and “revolutionized the science of planetary astronomy,” NASA said   in an

online remembrance of the famed mission.

When Voyager had no more planets to be encountered on its trajectory, Carl Sagan pressed to have its cameras turn back toward Earth for a final snap of the planet that sent it.From four billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) away, the images were taken on Valentine’s Day, 1990.

The Earth appeared as tiny as a speck of dust in a sunbeam, less than a single pixel in the vastness of space.

“I think this perspective underscores our responsibility to preserve and cherish that blue dot, the only home we have,” Sagan told a press conference at the time.

Where are they now?Voyager 1 has traveled father than any human-made spacecraft, and made it to interstellar space, about 13 billion miles away from Earth, in August 2012.

Voyager 2 is on its way there too, and is the only spacecraft to have flown by all four outer planets in our solar system.

The plutonium-powered spaceships will continue until they finally run out of fuel, and will then orbit in the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

Cummings said the cameras stopped working a long time ago, but about five instruments still collect data.

Scientists still hear from the Voyager spacecraft daily, and expect to get data for about another decade.

“It is still discovering new things because it is going where nothing has been before,” said

Stone. (AFP)

The “Game of Thrones” actress starred in the 2015 film, directed by Taylor and the latter says that the experience was “rough” and not something they would like to repeat, reports newsweek.com.

“That was a rough one. It was tough, it was tough on Clarke and me. I think we came away feeling a little bit burned by the process. It was hard for her in ways that I didn’t have to experience, because it was her face up on the screen and facing the criticism we had to face. I’m not surprised she’s more content to carry on with her other fantastic projects than re-enter that world,” Taylor said.

And he says that even if a sequel was suggested, neither of them would be back. (IANS)

Actress Emilia Clarke and director Alan Taylor were both “burned” by the process of the film “Terminator Genisys”

(IANS)

If you’ve been feeling less like yourself lately, a surge of inner power could push you over the top and make you feel strong and healthy again. You could decide to finish the unfinished tasks around you today. You might get most of them done by day’s end. Don’t forget to enjoy yourself, however.

A surge of passion could dominate your day unless you find an outlet for it. An intimate evening with a lover would be a good idea. Creative passion is also strong, and you could be hit with sudden inspiration, perhaps influenced by distant places. Don’t be afraid to take time out from your mundane chores to pursue this inspiration.

A romantic evening at home with your partner could bring the two of you closer. Your emotions are intense right now, so you need to use your intuition to judge exactly how much of your feelings you should reveal. An intellectual passion could also come your way. You might discover a new field of interest and you’ll want to bury yourself at home studying it for hours.Information received from far away could excite your passion to learn more about a subject. You might be inspired to use your new knowledge in a project that includes a partner. Your mind is extremely insightful at this time, so if you face decisions, this is the day to follow your heart. Don’t be surprised if you find your telepathic abilities expanded as well!

Money matters are likely to be advanced today through your intuition and inner power. You may get a hunch that your idea for bringing in some extra money just might work. At least look into it. Don’t let anyone talk you out of it until you know the facts. You might also rediscover a neglected talent that you could find quite useful at this time.

A surge of inner power could have you feeling like you can move mountains. If you’ve been contemplating a course of action that others believe impossible, this is the time to get it going. Career matters, romance, and creative projects could all be advanced considerably by careful effort on your part. Give it some thought and write down your ideas.

Memories from your past could resurface. You might wonder why you’re suddenly thinking about them, but they probably represent a release of old emotional hang-ups that have been holding you back. By midafternoon you should feel more focused, determined, and ready to take on just about anything. This is definitely a great day to start new projects or complete old ones.Today represents a beginning in many ways. A friend from the past could reappear in your life, and bring up memories both pleasant and disconcerting. Don’t worry too much about it. This probably represents a much-needed release. You might also become involved with a group that embodies goals about which you’re passionate.

You should be feeling especially passionate at this, especially regarding partnerships. Romantic partnerships definitely call for an evening together! Professional and creative partnerships call for a new project that you believe in strongly. Look to events in other states or foreign countries for inspiration. Something begun in places far away could capture your imagination.

Emotions could be running high today. Someone in your entourage may have a problem with an authority figure, and political issues could come up. You may feel powerful right now and tempted to throw your hat into the ring. However, it’s best to stay out of anything political and channel that power and passion into your own project.

Heightened mental powers might have you spending a lot of time reading or doing research of some kind. Your curiosity is especially high right now. You might even consider advancing your education in some way, especially since new interests have been stimulating you for some time. New friends in fascinating fields might have started you thinking. This is a good time to look into this.

Your intuition is increased today to the point where you feel like a mind reader, like you could deduce the thoughts and motives of people you’ve never met before. Reading about news events might bring sudden insights as to how they’re going to turn out. You could decide to put this ability to work advancing your financial condition.

Tal Afar residents who fled are back to battle ISTal Afar

Iraqi Turkmen fighter Abbas Yussef is all smiles,

clutching his Kalashnikov near the front lines in Tel Afar after his unit retook his home neighbourhood from Islamic State group jihadists.

“I can’t describe my joy when I saw my house again,” Yussef says.

“I can’t describe how it felt to take it back, a gun in my hand.”

Three years ago, IS seized nearly one third of Iraq, including Tal Afar, in a sweeping offensive that forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Yussef was among them, but quickly, along with thousands

of others, he responded to a call by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the highest Shiite authority in Iraq, to take up arms against the jihadists.

Soon afterwards he enrolled in the paramilitary Hashed al-Shaabi, an umbrella organisation which is dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias but which also includes Shiite Turkmen.

The Hashed took part in the offensive to retake Iraq’s second city Mosul, which was liberated in July after a gruelling nine-month onslaught, alongside US-backed Iraqi military, police and counter-terrorism forces.

Now the paramilitary group

has been battling to recapture Tal Afar, where IS has been driven out of all 29 districts in the northern city a mere week into an assault by Iraqi forces.

Families fled southWith Iraqi forces poised to declare victory over IS, Hashed fighters like Yussef recall how three years ago they were driven from their homes by advancing jihadists.

“I had to leave with my family for Diwaniya” province south of Baghdad, “leaving behind the house I had spent a lifetime building,” Yussef tells AFP, wiping dust and sweat from his face.

The former Iraq army officer now in his 40s was battling IS holdouts in the western Tal Afar neighbourhood of Al-Kifah when he saw his house -- and that brought a smile to his face.

Akram Kambris was also driven out by IS from Al-Kifah.

Sitting on a rock, the Hashed fighter points to an out-patient clinic.

“I was posted there when I was in the local police,” he says before pointing to another rose-coloured red-brick building. “That’s my

sister’s house.”Kambris recalls that three

years ago he and his “entire family” fled south when the jihadists swept into Tal Afar.

Now, he says, all of Tal Afar’s residents are involved in the offensive to rout IS from the city. “The younger ones fight and the older ones organise (food) convoys” for the militiamen.

‘Masters of the land’Most of the city’s 200,000-strong population -- overwhelmingly Shiite Turkmen whose beliefs are considered heretical by the

Sunni jihadists of IS -- fled Tal Afar after IS seized it.

Some members of the city’s Sunni minority joined the jihadists and went on to form a contingent with a particularly brutal reputation.

According to Akram, “just a few families linked to IS” have stayed on in Tal Afar.

Yussef says that “most of the IS chiefs in Tal Afar” hail from prominent families.

According to him, “there are Kurds among IS and their leader is Abu Alaa al-Talafari”, who was close to the leader of the jihadist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“Actually most of the IS emirs are originally from Tal Afar. Foreign and Turkish IS members joined later,” says Yussef.

Another Hashed militiaman, Abu Zeinab, brands IS fighters in Tal Afar as “cowards”.

“They are not fighting. We entered one house yesterday and found a stockpile of weapons,” he says.

“They could have used them and held out for another two weeks, but they didn’t. They can’t resist us, because here we are the masters of the land.” (AFP)

Indian city barricaded as ‘guru’ awaits sentencingSirsa

Supporters of an Indian guru ended a tense standoff

with soldiers yesterday after the “godman” was convicted of rape, but authorities are bracing for more trouble on the eve of his sentencing after rioting by devotees left 36 dead.

Thousands of followers of Ram Rahim Singh had congregated in the spiritual headquarters of his sect in the northern state of Haryana over the weekend and refused to leave, despite calls from

police and troops for them to disperse.

Singh’s loyalists had gone on a rampage in many other parts of the state after the court decision Friday.

On Sunday, followers began trickling out from the compound in the town of Sirsa one by one under army guard.

Hundreds of soldiers and riot police had blocked approaches to the premises spread over 1,000 acres (404 hectares) and were urging those holed up inside to surrender peacefully.

A curfew imposed in Sirsa,

where soldiers patrolled empty streets, was briefly lifted Sunday morning to allow Singh’s followers to leave the headquarters as spiritual anthems blared from megaphones.

Indian authorities have been on high alert since rioting and arson broke out minutes after Singh -- who has starred in films and claims to have 50 million followers -- was found guilty of raping two of his devotees.

Police said at least 36 people were killed as tens of

thousands of followers took to the streets, attacking television vans and setting fire to dozens of vehicles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday it was “natural to be worried” as the violence even briefly reached the capital New Delhi.

“Violence is not acceptable in the nation, in any form,” Modi said in his monthly radio address.

“Those who take law in their hands or take to violence will not be spared, whoever they are.”

Five people were killed and a sixth seriously

injured after a climbing accident Sunday morning in the Austrian Alps, rescue services said.

The cause of the accident, which occurred below the Mannlkarscharte pass near Zell-am-See, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the central city of Salzburg, has not yet been determined.

“We think a rope may

have come loose,” said Anton Voithofer, head of the Red Cross rescue team.

Five helicopters were sent to the scene, and the injured climber was transported to a hospital in Schwarzach.

The victims have not yet been identified.

It was the deadliest climbing accident so far this season in the Austrian Alps, where several dozen mountaineering deaths are reported each summer.

Geneva

A young Japanese pianist has been awarded the

prestigious Clara Haskil Prize, organisers said yesterday.

Mao Fujita, 18, will receive 25,000 Swiss francs (22,000 euros, $26,000) after beating Hong Kong-born Aristo Sham and Italian Alberto Ferro to win the coveted award.

“With him, one forgets the competition and gives in

only to music and grace,” a statement on the award’s website said.

Fujita, who began playing when he was three years old, has already won a number of international awards for his performances.

The Clara Haskil Prize, named after the pioneering Romanian pianist, is competed for every two years, but no one managed to win the prize during the last competition in 2015.

Bangladesh has detained and forcibly returned

90 Rohingya migrants to Myanmar, police said Sunday, just hours after Myanmarese troops on the other side of the border had opened fire on people fleeing the country.

Police intercepted a group of 70 Rohingya late Saturday after they crossed the “zero line” border zone, where Myanmar soldiers earlier fired mortars and machine guns at villagers making the dangerous dash from the

northern state of Rakhine into Bangladesh.

The villagers were caught roughly four kilometres inside Bangladeshi territory en route to a refugee camp in Kutupalong, where thousands of Rohingya already live in squalid conditions, said local police chief Abul Khaer.

Police said some of those detained had entered Bangladesh via the Ghumdhum border area -- where the Myanmar forces unleashed the barrage of fire just hours earlier.

New York

Activists paraded shirtless through the streets of New

York on Saturday, flashing their chests to celebrate the 10th annual GoTopless Day Parade.

Walking to the beat of drums in a carnival-style atmosphere, dozens of men and women embarked on one-mile (1.6-kilometer) march from Columbus Circle to Bryant Park for the event, which this year falls on Women’s Equality Day.

Participants of all shapes and sizes held up placards

proclaiming “Equal Topless Rights For All” and “War Is Obscene Not My N*****, Meditate 4 Peace Topless.”

“I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” said Rebecca Barwick, 35, who traveled up from Virginia and works in the federal government.

“It’s important to send a message. These are our bodies. They should not be policed any other way than men’s. Men walk around like this all the time, so why is it such a big deal?”

Many inked “Go Topless” across their chests and wore

hair bands with ****** popping up from the scalp on springs. One woman wore a blue Wonder Woman cape, and a couple of men wore bras.

Heavily out-numbered by spectators, the march was organised by US-based rights group GoTopless, which has spent 10 years campaigning for women to be able to go shirtless.

It is already legal for women to bare their breasts in public in New York, America’s fourth most populous state. Parallel events were scheduled in other US cities. (AFP)

London

British police investigating Friday’s sword attack

outside Buckingham Palace in London arrested a second man yesterday, as authorities in Belgium, Finland and Spain probed their own terror attacks.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism at 10:15hrs (0915 GMT) today and he has been taken into custody,” a police statement said.

It came hours after Islamic State jihadists claimed Friday’s knife attack on patrolling soldiers in Brussels and as authorities in Spain revealed

the death toll from last week’s twin attacks in Barcelona had risen to 16.

British police said they had arrested a 30-year-old man at an address in West London and were searching a property as part of the inquiry.

A warrant for the extended detention of the 26-year-old man involved in Friday’s incident has also been granted, the statement said.

The suspect -- who was arrested under the Terrorism Act -- had reached for a four-foot sword upon being challenged by unarmed police officers after deliberately driving at them outside the world-famous landmark.

Police said the man, who

comes from Luton some 30 miles (50 km) north of London, had repeatedly shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) and was incapacitated with CS gas.

In an earlier statement, they said searches were ongoing in the Luton area and that they believed it was a lone-wolf attack.

In Britain, 35 people have been killed in three jihadist attacks in London and Manchester since March.

The assault in London came just two hours after a knifeman attacked patrolling soldiers in Brussels in what authorities said was an “attempted terrorist murder”.

India clinch ODI seriesPallekele, Sri Lanka

Opener Rohit Sharma’s sublime century combined

with a maiden five-wicket haul by paceman Jasprit Bumrah powered India to a series-clinching win against Sri Lanka in the third one-day international yesterday.

Chasing 218 for victory, Sharma hit a 145-ball 124 not out to steer the visitors home in 45.1 overs, although unruly crowd behaviour delayed their six-wicket win in Pallekele.

Angry home fans threw water bottles onto the field and play stopped as players walked off with India needing eight runs to win.

The visitors rode on an unbeaten 157-run fifth-wicket stand between Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who made 67, to take a 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

But it was man of the match Bumrah who set up the win for India after his career-best figures of 5-27 restricted Sri Lanka to 217-9 in 50 overs.

“Bumrah’s got 11 wickets in three games, he’s bowled really well, he’s among our top short-format bowlers at the moment,” Kohli said in praise of the 23-year-old.

“He hits the right areas, bowls at pace, and in the death overs he’s like a fish in water,” Kohli added.

Sri Lankan fast bowlers hurt India’s reply with two early strikes including skipper Virat Kohli for one, leaving the visitors at 19-2.

Sharma and Lokesh Rahul, who made 17, then tried to steady the

chase with their 42-run partnership before spinner Akila Dananjaya turned on the heat.

Dananjaya got Rahul and Kedar Jadhav for nought in his first two overs.

But Sharma, who made 54 in the team’s previous win, kept his cool amid the madness to register his 12th ODI hundred as he paired with Dhoni to thwart the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne scored a 105-ball 80

to give the total some respect after the Chamara Kapugedera-led side suffered from regular wicket-fall. (AFP)

championship, we thought it was an easy one to organise,” he said. “When we got the approval from the FIVB, we realised that it would be a challenge.”

“We were determined to make it a success, so we worked hard and started eight months ahead of the tournament and today, everybody has seen what we have done the last 10 days and they are very happy.”

Bahrain already has its next international competition lined up on the calendar.

The BVA has already been awarded the rights to host the 2018 Asian U20 Championship, which Khalfan says should be held around August.

Khalfan also noted that a bid has already been submitted to host the FIVB U21 World Championship in 2019 – a competition that Bahrain has already hosted twice in the past, first in 1987 and then again in 1997.

Michael Schumacher’s teenage son Mick

marked the 25th anniversary of his father’s first

FormulaOne victory with an emotional lap of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit yesterday.Just hours ahead of

the Belgian Grand Prix, the 18-year-old, who is

this season competing in the European Formula Three series, drove the Benetton B194 car which carried the seven-time champion to glory in 1994.

The 1992 car, in which Schumacher won his maiden race, was not available for him to use, but the 1994 car was the one in which Michael claimed his first drivers’ championship two years later.

“It was great, it was a pleasure for me,” said Schumacher, representing his family and his father who suffered serious head injuries in a ski accident in the French Alps in December 2013.

“For me to be able to do this, to drive this is emotional, fun and amazing. There is a lot of history with it and I was really happy that I was able to drive it.

“I never saw so many people in one spot in a race weekend -- so that was really entertaining and fun.”

The teenager wore a helmet that was made up of both his and his father’s favourite designs. “It’s a piece of history,” he said. “I learned a lot from him. I always look back at this career and it’s nice to see what he achieved.” (AFP)

Lewis Hamilton completed his 200th Grand Prix in

victorious style yesterday when he claimed a much-needed win for Mercedes to trim Sebastian Vettel’s championship lead to seven points.

The 32-year-old Briton made the most of his record-equalling 68th pole position to take the lead, but had to survive some concerted attacks from Vettel’s Ferrari

before emerging triumphant for the fifth time this season.

It was the three-time world champion’s third Belgian victory and the 58th of his career, lifting him back into serious contention for the title.

Another victory in next Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix could give him the lead for the first time this year.

Four-time champion Vettel came home second ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, Finn Kimi Raikkonen

in the second Ferrari and his compatriot Valtteri Bottas in the second Mercedes.

“It’s been a strong weekend for myself and the team,” said Hamilton. “Sebastian put up a great fight, but this is what I said I came to do here and so I did it.”

Vettel said: “It was good fun, but it was intense. I was waiting for Lewis to make a mistake – and he didn’t – and he was waiting for me – and I didn’t.

In perfect, if humid conditions, with an air temperature of 22 degrees and the track at 23, and in front of an estimated 125,000 crowd including an ‘orange army’ of 80,000, Hamilton pulled away from his record-equalling 68th pole position to lead into La Source and resisted Vettel’s attack at Eau Rouge. Hamilton built up an early head of speed. (AFP)

Chris Froome storms to victoryBenitachell, Spain

Chris Froome took another huge step

towards a historic Tour de France-Vuelta a Espana double by claiming stage nine of the Vuelta yesterday to extend his race lead.

Froome attacked with 500m to go on the

category-one climb of a 174km stage from Orihuela to Benitachell to win in a time of 4hrs 07mins 13secs from his closest

chal lenger

Esteban Chaves and Canadian Michael Woods.

“That was incredible today,” Froome told Spanish TV station Teledeporte.

“It’s such a good feeling to get to the end of this first block with the red jersey and also a decent gap on the rest of the GC riders.”

Colombian Chaves slips 36 seconds behind Froome in the general classification with Ireland’s Nicolas Roche 1min 05secs back in third. But Froome, aiming to become only the third man to win the Tour and Vuelta in the same year, is beginning to amass a significant advantage over the rest of his general classification rivals.

Vincenzo Nibali was 14 seconds back on the stage to fall 1min 17secs behind Froome in fourth with Fabio Aru a further 16 seconds back in

seventh overall.

And victory on the Cumbre del Sol was extra sweet for Froome having lost out to Tom Dumoulin on the same climb two years ago.

“It was still on my mind this morning,” added Froome.

“Watching the scenes of two years ago in the bus this morning just to really calculate the climb.” (AFP)

Liverpool rout Arsenal 4-0Liverpool

Arsenal’s early-season problems mounted at

Anfield yesterday after they were condemned to a miserable 4-0 defeat by Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Liverpool. Not even the return of Alexis Sanchez could inspire Arsene Wenger’s side as they fell to goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge.

Salah’s third goal, after 57 minutes, summed up Liverpool’s mastery of the opposition as Arsenal managed to concede from an attacking corner.

After the ball was headed clear, Hector Bellerin misjudged

the bounce and Salah sprang past him before sprinting over half the length of the field and converting clinically. Substitute Sturridge got in on the act with just his third league goal of 2017, completing the rout with a far-post header from Salah’s cross after yet another unstoppable counter-attack 20 minutes later.

The opening goal had come in the 17th minute after wave after wave of Liverpool attacks.

Finally, on a rapid break, Joe Gomez delivered a superb, hanging right-wing cross and Firmino sprinted in at full speed to head past Petr Cech from six yards. (AFP)

Conor McGregor placed himself on a potential collision

course with his mixed martial arts paymasters after refusing to rule out further boxing bouts following his defeat to Floyd Mayweather on Saturday.

The charismatic Irishman, a two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship world champion, performed creditably before eventually being stopped by boxing legend Mayweather in the 10th round at the T-Mobile Arena.

McGregor, 29, could pocket as much as $100 million from Saturday’s fight, eclipsing his entire career MMA earnings in a single night’s work.

While McGregor ended up being comfortably beaten by Mayweather, the MMA star -- who had never boxed in a professional bout before Saturday -- said he was open to continuing in the ring.

“I enjoyed the fight, It was a great contest,” McGregor said. “People ask me what’s next, I’m not quite sure. I’ve multiple titles in the UFC to think about.

“I could also continue in the boxing game...I have many options in mixed martial arts. I’m sure there’ll be options in boxing. Right now I’m a free agent.”

Many in the boxing world had

questioned whether McGregor’s bout with Mayweather, which is on track to become the richest fight in history, should even have been sanctioned.

McGregor revealed after the fight he had been stung by the criticism of the boxing establishment.

“There was a lot of disrespect and a lot of disregard for my skill,” he said.

“I was a little bit taken aback by the disrespect and the disregard that was shown. But I always knew that when the fight came around I’d give a good account of myself,” added

McGregor, who was competitive in the early rounds before being dominated by Mayweather.

One obvious boxing bout on the horizon for McGregor could be against sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi.

Malignaggi has spent the build-up goading McGregor publicly, creating a grudge-match narrative that is likely to appeal to fans.

But any plans McGregor has about continuing his flirtation with boxing are likely to be opposed by UFC chief executive Dana White.

White, who was instrumental in helping set up the Mayweather fight, said he would prefer to see McGregor return to the world of cage-fighting -- and stay there.

“I would rather he did not,” White said when asked if he wanted McGregor to continue boxing.

“This is not what he does. He’s a mixed martial artist. He goes in and he fights and he uses all of his weapons. Tonight he goes in and is only able to use his hands. I don’t think he has anything else left to prove. I would rather he fights mixed martial arts.”

White emphasized that McGregor’s bout with Mayweather was a one-off, which had built its own momentum due to the status of the two fighters as the kings of their respective crafts. (AFP)

McGregor open to boxing again

Irish media praise McGregor’s enduranceDublin

Irish media hailed Dublin’s Conor McGregor for a gritty

display yesterday following his 10th-round loss to Floyd Mayweather in their Las Vegas super-fight.

The pundits focused on the mixed martial arts star’s endurance and bravery in managing to stay upright for 10 rounds with an opponent of Mayweather’s calibre, particularly as it was his first bout in a boxing ring.

“This was, after all the hype and trash talk, a man entering a new sport and taking on the best and while it was a comfortable win for Mayweather, McGregor has been lauded for the effort he put in,” wrote The Irish Independent.

Online sports website Joe also talked up McGregor’s ability to hang in, having been clearly outclassed after the first three rounds.

“There was to be no almighty shock, but McGregor earned plenty of respect (as well as a helluva lot of money) and can walk away from the encounter with his head held high,” it said.

Other crumbs of comfort were to be found in tabloid newspapers, who knew their readership would be firmly backing the former plumber from the wrong side of the tracks who has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom.

“Conor McGregor landed more punches on Floyd Mayweather than Manny Pacquiao -- in two fewer rounds,” noted the Irish Sunday Mirror. (AFP)

McGregor awed by clinical MayweatherLas Vegas

Conor McGregor saluted Floyd Mayweather’s clinical boxing

masterclass Saturday -- but insisted he felt he could have fought on beyond a 10th round stoppage.

The 29-year-old Irish mixed martial arts star began bravely and won the first three rounds but was ultimately outclassed by the vastly more experienced Mayweather.

Afterwards McGregor, who had never boxed professionally before Saturday’s bout at the T-Mobile Arena, praised Mayweather’s composed demolition job.

“He’s composed, he’s not that fast, he’s not that powerful, but boy is he composed in there,” McGregor said.

“I thought it was close though and I thought it was a bit of an early stoppage. I was just a little fatigued. He was just a lot more composed with his shots.

“I have to give it to him, that’s what 50 pro fights will do for

you.”But McGregor, a world

champion in the brutal world of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, maintained that he should have been allowed to fight on past the 10th.

“I’ve been strangled on live TV and came back,” McGregor said.

“When you’re in here in the squared circle, everything is different. Let the man put me down, that’s fatigue, that’s not damage. (AFP)

Mayweather also said he had felt obliged to

“put on a show” after being accused of contributing to an underwhelming spectacle in his 2015 “Fight of the Century” against Manny Pacquiao.

On that occasion Mayweather was accused of being overly cautious, cagily keeping Pacquiao at arm’s length en route to a comfortable win.

“I could have made it boring. I didn’t want to do that,” Mayweather said. “I felt like I owed the fans a last hurrah. So I went out there and that was the game plan. I wanted to go out with a bang.”

Mayweather insisted that his legacy as one of boxing greats would remain intact following his controversial meeting with McGregor, which had been panned by many in boxing.

“After 21 years, I’ve had some great fights, I had boring fights,” Mayweather said. “But at the end of the day I’ll be remembered as a winner.

“I know how to dissect my opponent, break them down and stick to the game plan.”

Asked if there was any chance he may yet return to the ring, he replied: “You won’t see me getting in the ring no more. So any guy calling me out -- forget it.” (AFP)

Las Vegas

Floyd Mayweather insisted he would head into a permanent retirement after sealing his place in boxing history with a 50th

straight win against Conor McGregor on Saturday. The 40-year-old American boxer outclassed McGregor over

10 absorbing rounds at the T-Mobile Arena to defeat Irish mixed martial arts by technical knockout.

The win sees Mayweather, who had come out of a two-year retirement to face McGregor, surpass heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano with a perfect record of 50-0.

Afterward former welterweight king Mayweather insisted he would never be seen in a ring again.

“This was my last fight tonight. For sure,” Mayweather said, praising his beaten opponent. “Tonight was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with.

“Conor you are a hell of a champion.”Mayweather also rejected suggestions that his 50th victory --

against an opponent who had never boxed professionally before -- would be destined to have an asterisk against it.

“A win is a win, no matter how you get it,” Mayweather said. “Rocky Marciano is a legend and I look forward to going into the Hall of Fame one day.”

Mayweather meanwhile revealed the fight had followed a tactical plan as he took his time and allowed McGregor to become fatigued before pouncing in the later rounds. “Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch,” Mayweather said.
