verge of being taken from him, Kanye retreated in a soft of self-
imposed exile, so he could rise form the ashes like a phoenix. He
went on to share, “I really stepped away from things for the first
time since my mom passed… I even contemplated suicide… I used
to have women all around me, now I have none. I have no mother,
no grandmother, no girlfriend, no daughter. Nothing… and I’m
realizing that’s impacting everything about me.”
It was this during period of soul searching that has led Kanye to
where he is with his latest studio offering, My Beautiful Dark
Twisted Fantasy. Even amidst deep tragedies, firestorms of
controversy, and backlashes from his brutal honesty, Kanye’s
brilliance as an artist still burns bright. At the screening, the 14-
time Grammy-winner turned director went on to reflect, “I started
thinking of the conversation regarding art versus music. There is a
saying that goes, ‘The best artists [painters] get paid the most, and
the worst get paid the least.’ However, in the music industry it’s
vice versa. The best musicians get paid the least, while the worst
musicians get paid the most.” When sharing this thoughts, it was
as if Kanye has been asking himself, which side of the saying he has
been on. Since the debut of his short film, Kanye has once again
began receiving accolades for his art. Filled with vivid colors and a
story told in contrasting images, the French New Wave influenced
project was written and directed by West, and stars Kanye and
Selita Ebanks. Completely comfortable within his current artistic
zone, Kanye proclaimed, “It is okay to create things no one else
may understand… Now my creative sweet spot is to think like a
5 year old. What would I like, if I wasn’t taught what to like?” This
approach appears to be working. After the film’s viewing, Island
Def Jam’s VP of Music Promotions, Noah Sheer stated, “Every time
Kanye does it, he raises it to new levels. Now he has really taken it
to a higher plateau.” With the release of his first short film and new
album, Kanye has officially turned one of his own fantasies into a
reality. At the close of the premier, the emcee, writer, director,
designer, and artist articulated his final thought of the evening
saying, “The world takes what is naturally different and tries to
change it…I feel like God has given me this opportunity and I have
to figure out how I can paint, and bring to color what he has placed
in me to share. Both as a philanthropist and an artist… and as
long as I have this opportunity, then with every bone in my body,
I’m going to live every moment, to use this gift I have been given,
without being afraid.”

Kanye: A Platinum Artist with
a Philanthropist’s Heart
“To whom much is given, much is expected.”
Founded in 2003, the mission of the Kanye West Foundation,
also commonly referred to as the “Donda West Foundation” is
to help combat the severe dropout problem in schools across
the United States by providing under-served youth access to
music production programs and facilities that will enable them
to unleash their creative ability and reach their full potential.
West himself has directly contributed over $500,000 to his
organization. The foundation consists of three main programs:
1. LOOP DREAMS which teaches students crucial life
skills, such as communication, financial literacy, goal setting,
integrity, respect, responsibility, self-discipline and time
management. By combining music education with a youth
development approach, Loop Dreams encourages its
participants’ musical aspirations and creativity while giving
them the skills needed to reach their goals.
2. THE COLLEGE DROP-IN PROGRAM which
exposes Middle School students to UCLA faculty who are
conducting research pertaining to Hip-Hop, jazz and African
American culture and introduces them to college level
curriculum, activities and campus life.
3. THE KANYE WEST FOUNDATION S.H.O.W.
was created to address academic performance, attendance
and behavior problems in public high schools. As an incentive
to stay in school, S.H.O.W. (Students Helping Our World),
offered free tickets to see Kanye West perform. More than
2,500 students improved their grades and attendance, and
were in the house on June 11, 2009 to see a special Kanye
West concert in their honor.
In addition to these excellent programs within his own
foundation, Kanye also keeps close ties and lends his talent to
support other artists’ foundations’ efforts, including Common’s
“Common Ground”.
On November 22nd, Kanye
West’s long awaited
4th studio album, My
Beautiful Dark Twisted
Fantasy, was released by
on Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Recordings. Up to
this point, it can be undisputedly stated that
both Kanye’s career and personal life (that
the public is privy to) have been filled with
stratospheric peaks and deep valleys. As a
result, Kanye has emerged as one of Pop’s
most consistently intriguing figures of the
new millennium.
This year, West appears to be working overtime
in an attempt to “socially recover” from his now
infamous incident at 2009’s MTV Video Music
Awards during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech.
Although some took the impromptu outburst
to be one of the more entertaining moments
of the night, most mainstream critics and
viewers responded as if Kanye committed
a serious crime. Recently, at a private Los
Angeles industry screening for his film debut
“Runaway”, Kanye shared with the small
audience on hand (including The Frequency
News), the impact that moment is still
having on him mentally. “It’s like you
spend your whole life trying to hit
the right note. Then, even when
you have hit every one correct,
and when you make one wrong
glaring note, all of a sudden
all the other right ones no
longer exist.” Feeling as if
