An old man and a young girl were
fishing from the dock. They were watching
the tourists boarding the glass bottom boats
for Managaha. The girl looked puzzled and
turned to ask her grandfather, "Where do
those people come from? Why do they look so different from us?"
The old man smiled . He knew his
granddaughter was intelligent and he enjoyed
answering her questions. "They are from
Japan. Japan is an island north of the Mariana Islands."
The girl put down her pole and asked, "Is it far from here?"
"Yes, it ' s over 1,600 miles away. It
takes over four hours to fly there."
"Is it as big as our island?"
"Oh, it's even bigger," the grandfather
answered. "It ' s bigger than all of the
Mariana Islands put together."

"Wow! Are there any other big islands in the Pacific?''
"Yes, there are many islands . l' 11
show you a map when we get home. There are
the other islands of Micronesia like the
Marshalls, Truk and Ponape and other groups
of islRnds in the Carolines. There are also
the Polynesian islands like Samoa and
Tahiti."
"Grandpa, are any of those islands as
big as Japan?"
"No, but on each side of the Pacific
there are continents much bigger than Japan . "
"Bigger?" the girl asked.
"Yes, to the east there is North and
South America. To the west you'll find
there is Asia and to the south there is
Australia."
As they were talking a large ship
appeared in the harbor. It seemed to grow
bigger and bigger as it neared the island.
"Wow, that ship is really big," the
girl said.

A grid helps us to locate things on a
map. A grid is made of lines. Some lines go fro~ North to South. Some lines go from
East to West. The lines cross each other.
Use the grid on this page to locate the
objects. The key tells you where they are.
The church is in box 2D. Find the 2 and the
D with your fingers. Follow the lines until
your fingers meet at the church. The coco
nut trees are in lB. Can you find them?
Where is the flower garden? Where is the
big tree? Can you tell a friend where to
find the bicycle? There are houses in two
boxes. Where are the houses? Give the let
ter and the number for each.

Which way?
Two children decided to walk to
their class picnic. They lived
near Capitol Hill. The picnic was
at Micro Beach. We have walked past this tree
before. I think we are lost.
No, we are on the right trail. I
looked at the map. This trail
goes to the highway. The highway
goes to Micro Beach.
I hope you are right. I want to
get there before they eat.
The children walked and walked.
They worried because they could
not see the beach. Juanita
worried too. Suddenly she spoke.

A Map tells Direction
Maps are important to us. They show us
directions. They tell us how to go from one
place to another. Look at the map. Which
direction is the church from the hotel?
Which direction does the highway run?
Look at the map of the Marianas Islands.
Some islands are North of Saipan. Some
islands are South of Saipan. Can you name
the islands which are North of Saipan? Can

Maps
Maps are useful to us. There are many
kinds of maps. Some maps help us find
places. Some maps help us find our way.
Maps use symbols. Symbols are pictures
of real things. The symbols are explained in the key or legend.
A compass rose is used on a map to show
directions. It shows North, South, East,
and West. Usually the top of a map is North
but you should look at the compass rose to be sure.
Look at the map of Juan's back yard.
Use the symbols, key and compass rose.
Tell a friend everything you know about Juan's back yard.

Dear Mariko,
My name is Maria. I am in the third
grade. I want to be your pen pal. Can you
tell me about Japan? Is it really as big as
all of the Marianas Islands together? Here is a map of my island. I want to
tell you about Saipan. There are many
beautiful places to go. There are many
beautiful things to see.
The mountains are the highest part of
our island. It is cool on top of the
moun tains. We can see beautiful views from
the mountains. The hills are lower than the
mountains. There are high cliffs on the
edge of the mountains. We can find caves
along the cliffs.

The ocean around our island is also
beautiful. The reef protects our island from the rough sea, and there are long sandy
beaches. Between the reef and the shore is
the lagoon. The water in the lagoon is
clean and clear. At low tide it is shallow and you can walk into the water without fear
of drowning. There is a channel through the reef so
that the big ships can come into the harbor.
Most of the people live on the west side of
the island. You can see many houses and
villages on the west side. In the center of our island there ls a
lake. There are many fish in the lake and
many wild birds live there. You can even
see white ducks.

On the east side of the island is a
beautiful bay. You can enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches there. But to the north
there are steep cliffs which drop into the sea.
There are many interesting places to
visit on our island. One is an interesting rock called the Old Man by the Sea. It is
a big rock which looks like the face of an old man. Another is the Grotto. From the
ocean it looks like a cave but if you look
down from above it looks like a tea kettle.
At the bottom there is a beautiful blue
ocean. Many tourists and islanders walk
down the steep path to swim in the pool.
Others just enjoy the beautiful view.

The reef is a big help for our island,
people, and the small animals in the ocean.
It is good for the people because we
got many fish from the reef. We also get
octopus, lobster, and crab. They hide in
the coral rocks. The big, harmful fish
can't find them.

Why Is the Reef Important?
A barrier reef is usually long and narrow. It stretches as long as the island.
It is very helpful to our island. The
barrier reef protects our island from the
ocean. It stops the big waves from coming
onto our island. It slows the waves so that
they do not harm us.
Look at the map. Do you see the barrier reef on the west side of the islands?
There is a fringing reef on the east side
of our islands. Can you see it on the map? Do you know why?

Where Does The Reef Corne From?
The~e are many small animals called
polyps. Polyps look like jellyfish. These
animals live in groups. They gather iu
warm, shallow water. When they <lie their
skeletons pile up. They form a wall of
coral around the island. The coral forms
many shapes an<l figures. It looks
like trees, flowers and deer horns. Coral
walls build and build until they reach
the surface of the water.

When it rains, the water goes int o the ground. Water and sun make the plants
green and healthy. Farmers like rain because it makes
their plants grow. The animals eat the
plants. We use their plants and animals
for food. Without food we could not live.
We all need water. People catch the
rain water and keep it in tanks. We use water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Too Much Rain
Sometimes we have too much rain. That
is a problem. The water fills up the space
in the ground. No more water can go into
the ground. The water floods the land.
The extra water fills the streams. Hard
rain also damages the leaves on the plants.
Too much rain is bad for plants. Compare the two pictures.

Too much rain causes other problems.
When it rains for days and days and does
not stop, it causes erosion. The rain
washes the dirt away. The dirt goes with
the water. It flows toward the ocean.

Jose's mother called, "Go outside and pick up the lumber and tin in our

Jose asked, "What's a typhoon 7"
"It is a strong wind," she answered.
"It can blow down houses and trees. 11
Jose ran outside. He put the tin

He put the lumber in a pile and tied it with rope.
His mother cooked and washed the dishes. When his father came home he

His father said, "It is condition
two. The governor asked all workers
to prepare for the typhoon."
"Do some people work during the
typhoon?" Jose asked.
"Yes," his father answered, "the
police, doctors, public works and radio
stations are working."
Next, Jose helped his mother in
the house. They moved the furniture
away from the doors. They took the
pictures off of the walls. They put
the s t atues in the trunk. They filled
containers with water and packed their
sleeping mats and blankets.

During the night they could hear noises outside. They were worried so
they said a prayer. They listened to
the radio. Some people slept. Some
people played cards. Jose was just
lying on his mat when his father asked, "Are you frightened?"
"No, I'm worried about my chickens," he said.
"Don't worry. The chickens know
where to hide. Go to sleep," his
father said. So Jose feel asleep.

When t he elec tric lights went out, Jose's father lit their lamp. The radio

Jose looked out of the window. He could

Jose ' s father called him, "It is

When his father returned Jose asked, "Is he alright?"
"Yes, he stepped on a nail. His father pulled it out."
"That must be painful," Jose said. His father agreed. "That's right.
That is why I wanted you to stay inside."
Jose went back to his mat. BANG! There was a loud noise. He ran to look
out between the cracks in the metal
louvres.
"What happened?" his father asked.
"The whole warehouse blew away."
Jose said.
"That warehouse was 30 years old.
Many typhoons passed during those years.
It was strong enough until now."

All wind is not the same. Strong wind can be dangerous. It can blow down houses and trees.
When the wind blows in a big circle it is called a typhoon. Typhoons
are formed in the Pacific near the equator. They move northwest towards
the Marianas and the Philippines.
The air at the equator is warm. Cool air comes from two different directions
the tradewinds. The warm air spins
upward . It picks up water . The wind
blows very fast in the circle but the
typhoon moves slowly across the Pacific.
People have time to prepare if they
listen to the storm warnings.

One Saturday, I went to the store with
my mother to do some shopping. I was happy
because my mother promised to buy some
apples for me. I like apples . They are
sweet and crisp.
We stood in front of the fruit section.
I saw the apples which Tun Juan was putting
on the shelf. They were very red.
"Mom! These apples are really red,"
I said.
"Yes, Lisa they are. Maybe they just
arrived from America, 11 she answered.
''Oh! Don't we grow apples on our
island?" I asked my mother.
"Lisa, these fruits are not grown on
our island."

We eat only the leaves and stems of

Not all plants are good for us. There
are s ome plants that are harmful. There are some plants that we should not touch and
some plants that we should not eat.
Poisonous plants often have white sap. There are many plants on our island that make
our skin red. We may get a rash or itchy
skin from them. Some examples are the Star of Bethlehem and the piga hagon suni. The
white sap of the plumeria can hurt our eyes.
There are some plants on our island that make us sick. We should not eat these
p lants. We may get very sick if we eat oleander or Be-still plant.
Some plants cause problems. The roots of the cottonwood tree can break
cement houses. The tangantangan kills the good plants in our garden.
Can you list o ther plants that are harmful to us?

Why Are They Poisionous
Many plants are pretty. Many plants are also
harmful & poisionous.
There are times when we let them grow around
our house. Without care, they bloom
& bear fruit. But we did not know
that they were harmful to us.
From blindness to skin rash and sometimes accidentally
we are poisoned by them
when we eat.
