I{EP()RT FOR 1914-15.

Hev. AR'l'HUR GILES, Secretary in India.

l "HE Society exists for the sole purpose of administering to the twos and threes in widely scattered districts, and the very nature of

QUI' en~erprise precludes the possibility of impressive statistics either in the way of novelty or numbers. Nevertheless, reviewing the work as a whole, there is every reason for tJhanksgiving and praise. Much of this work is, apparently, casual and by the way. Yet not .really so, for the object we have kept steadily and always in mind, .has been to get into touch with that man' or woman who is, as it were, out of the yray: a conversation with some fellow-traveller, a :service in a railway waiting-room with an audience of half-a-dozen; an hour or two spent in the home of some railway servant, who with his 'wife are the 'only Europeans there, surrounded perpetually with people whose religion and rules of life are altogether non-Christian, .and whose influence is depressing and detrimental to vigorous and joyful religious experience. Such work never can be showy nor its results tabulated. It is carried on beyond the ken' of the regular Ohristian congregation, and without their invaluable sympathy and ,encouragement and aid. It has to be maintained in the absence of meetings and conferences and fellowships, such as help to sustain and inspire the. Christian minister in large centres of religious life. So that, at times, it must be the sheer" glory of going on" that keeps our men going.

Iji would be difficult to name any branch of Christian service in India in which the workers needed the sustaining grace and power that comes through the prayers of interested souls more than this; which goes to prove that many such prayers are offered continually. For the work has gone on, the men have kept at it faithfully and

.assiduously, success has been maintained, and souls have been won. So to-day, as in former y~ars, we in India ought to be grateful.and

.are grateful to God for His great goodness. In a brief report it is impossible to review fully and in detail the

work of a year. Rather is it in the Evangelists' monthly reports that illuminating instances denoting the value of our work· appear from time to time. Here is one of them :-," At G--- I h~· a;

10 Anglo-indian Evangelisation S()ciet.y.

visit from a young man' with whom I had conversation some months ago. He came on this occasion to tell me of his decision to. become a Christian. He is .a European, had professed the Mohammedan faith, been to Mecca, and dressed as a Mohammedan. It takes. some courage to do all this, and the manner in which he spoke showed his determination to be equally true Vo Christianity. But I hope and pray that he will be led to know the Saviour Himself." Here is another :-" Mrs C---, our Sunday School Superintendent, at J--- has had to leave the station with her husband. We shall miss her much, as she had been a faithful worker for over two years. We are glad to find Mr and Mrs P--- willing to take over the school, which is to be held at their home. They are good Christian people, and we are glad of their help." And another:-"At G--- I held a meetmg in a driver's house on Sunday morning which: the people seemed to enjoy and wished it could be -repeated every. Sunday morning." We heartily wish 'the same. Still another instance is that of a discovery made away in a lonely valley among the Ghats of a community of a dozen or more Europeans superintending the work of some five thousand coolies in the construction of a.. ~igantic dam. A young consulting engineer and his wife, members of the Society of Friends, formerly members of the Student Volunteer movement in England, and to-day keenly interested in all Christian work, had for a long time prayed that some minister might find his way to this out-of-the way place and hold service in the camp. When they had almost given up hope one of our ministers visited them, an~ the servioe which they had prayed for. was held. It was an interesting'gathering too. A congregation of eight gathered in.a corner of a great store-room, sandwiched amidst drums of oil, trolley wheels, bags. of screws and nails, door and window frames, stacks of corrugated iron, and a hundred other things; no robing, no ecclesiastical embellishments, no organ; yet" J esu, Lover of my soul," rose a,s feelingly from hearts gathered there a.s from any cathedral congregation'that day.

Such are a few sidelights on our doings. N rithing very thrilling or romantic, any more'than are the conditions under which these things are done. To get to the camp for that congregation of eight may lTnean long waiting at an uninteresting railway siding, followed by a: ]ong cold journey of hours across a bleak valley after· sunset. To,reach the station where services are held from time to time in the· institute or waiting-room, it may mean, in the summer, a six to ten hours railway journey, which feels like being driven through a neverending furnace ; or, if in winter, it may mean continual tumoling out :and in of trains at an hours of'the night with the thermometer at 40, and a keen biting wind cutting through you; not at all romantic.

Only those who have lived in India or have friends living here can appl'eciate the value of this work. The number of Europeans in India increases, a.nd there should be a proportionate increase of themeans of Christian fellowship for these. There are still very needy distriots which only a Society such as ours is likely to reach, but even:

A.nglo-Indian Evangelisation Society. 11

for us to do so there must be an increase of interest, increase of funds, and increase of staff.

Earnestly, therefore, do we appeal to all our friends and helpers to read with a sympathetic interest the brief records of service in, the following pages, and to redouble their efforts for the furtherance of the Gospel among OUR OOUNTRYMEN IN INDIA.

INDIAN SECRETARY'S DEPUTATION WORK.

This has been to a very large extent curtailed owing to the demands of purely district wo:tk, particularly at Abu Road. From North and South opportunities for preaching and speaking with a view to increasing interest in the Society's work have been offered, but only a few could be made use of. This is unfortunate, as too much importance cannot be attached to such a form of service, if the Society is to secure and maintain that co-operation of Anglo-Indian Christian communities which the broad evangelical nature of ita enterprise ough.t to evoke. In the little he has been able to do, the response has been both hearty and generous, although war conditions have prevented friends from giving as largely as they otherwise would have done.

GLIMPSES OF WORK FROM THE FIELD.

Rev. ARTHUR GILES, Bombay to Raichur G.I.P. Railway, writes :-" The demands in more needy districts have made visits along this one less frequent than hitherto.

"In the month of May ten days were spent at Hutti Gold Mine, which is fifty miles from the railway at Raichur and four hundred miles from my headquarters. As usual, a very hearty welcome was received, and all interesting, as well as, I trust, a profitable time was spent. Services on the two Sunday evenings were well attended, and the week intervening afforded opportunity for meeting the people in their homes.

"Services have been conducted also at Raichul', Shahabad, Kurduwadi, Sholapur, Dhond, and Kalyan; whilst Ahmed nagar, and Hotgi were also visited.

"The following extract from the American Marathi Mission Prayer Circular for July serves to show that one's work is· not altogether unfruitful :-' Thanksgiving and praise for the manifestation of tQe ·working of the Spirit among Europeans in Sholapur. Twohave become Christians as the result of Mr Giles' visit here and his talk to the Scripture Union l\ieeting, which is in charge of Miss Fulcher.' Such testimonies as these are encouraging, for the itinerant and disconnect,ed nature of our work makes it almost impossible to discern ·even a promise' of satisfactory results."

12 Anglo:..Indian EvangeUsa,t.ion Society.

Mr A. P. TAYLOR, East Indian Railway District, writes;" In looking back over the year's work, one has to acknowledge, with ;thankfulness, the guidance and blessing of God. The work has grown in many ways. There has been more interest shown, and theHoly Spirit has been influencing individual lives, creating within them a desire to live and work for the glory of God. At the same· time, our hearts have been made sad by seeing so much sin around tS, and we feel to be scarcely touching the great needs of the AngloIndian community.

"Railway Services.-These gatherings have been better atte~ded. Some of our members have given much time and thought to the work, in the way of visiting, distributing Christian literature, and giving invitations to the meetings. Monthly services have beell established at Sita.rampore, and Messrs Rowat and Rees of the Open Brethren Mission, have made themselves responsible for the work there. They report good numbers and times of blessing. The Rev. Geo. Hicks, of Gya, reports that the Railway gatherings there have improved considerably during the year, and that the average attendance is about twenty. I had an interesting meeting at the home of Mr Pollock at Jamalpur, who is doing such a good work in that large Railway centre. Other services have been held in private homes, where the numbers have been much smaller.

"Su'r£day Schools.-In the beginning of the year the schools suffered considerably for want of officers. All the Superintendents had. been transferred as well as most of the teachers. But, in time, their places were filled, and at present-both at Bandel Junction and Jhajha-we have never had better numbers, or better teachers. Through the kindness of friends, we have been able to give prizes to the children.

" Visiting.-As our people have been transferred, more visiting has been necessary. We make a special effort to keep in touch with aU our members, after they have left us. Much kindness has been shown us, and there have been many openings for service in their homes.

".Distribution of Scriptures and Christian Literature.-.About 500(:) Scriptures, periodicals and tracts have been distributed during the year. Most of our members have been supplied with Christian papers, week by week. The larger railway station waiting rooms have been supplied with suitable tracts, and Scriptures have been given to many of our young people. We are gratefully indebted to all who So thoughtfully supply them.

"Other Services.-Services,prayer meetings, and lectures have been given in other churches and halls, and several meetings have been h~ld for native Christians, by kind invitation of missionaries.

" Help Received.-During the year we have .had the assistance of" severa) gentlemen from Calcutta, who have willingly given their weekends; whilst others have helped financially. Weare thankful to an who have4helped the work forward.: We are greatly indebted to themembers of the Oalcutta Oommittee; who, though unable to·'meet together very of;t.en, show much intf"rf"st and sympathy in our work.

/1 nglo-Indian Evallgelisation Society. 13

" Perso'ltal.-During part of the year; my wife has been holding a Bible Olass for the wives of soldiers at .T alapahar, and has carried 011

systematic visiting week by week. The attendanc·e at the Bible Glass has varied, but there has been much blessing. More has been done in visiting, as, alJ such times, there is more opportunity for personal work."

Abu Road District, B.B. & 0.1. Railway, Bulsar to Beawar. -" The unstvoidable absence of Rev. Arnold and Mrs Thomas has left this district without a resident worker for a considerable part of the year. This does not mean, however, that it has been wholly neglected. Occasional services have been conducted in Abu Road by Rev. George Garstail's, B.D., of Beawar, and by Rev . .J Blair, B.A., of Deesa. In addition to this, the Indian Secretary resided in the District during July, August, and September, and again in December, January, and part of February. Thus services were held fortnightly, both at Abu Road and Ahmedabad. Besides these, thanks to the devoted cooperation of certain ladies, Sunday School has heen regularly held in each of the Stations named. Besides these regular services at Abu Road and Ahmedabad, visits were paid to other places along the District, and, although services were not possible, residents were visited in their homes.

"In December the Sunday School at Abu Road had a most enjoyable treat in the way of games, tea, and gifts of books and Bibles. These were provided partly by the generous grants from our Ladies' Union at home, a:qd partly from the children's own weekly contributions. Mrs Jones, wife of one of the local railway officers, kindly distributed the books, and in doing so expressed a surprised "but very real and sympathetic interest in this work among the young people of the Station. Needless to say, the children received their prizes with unfeigned delight, and their parents also were not a little pleased.

"At Ahmedabad a s:imilar gathering was held early in January. Each scholar on this occasion received a handsome toy, and in two instances a book also was given.

" The services at both Stations have been well attended, and interest has been maintained. The residents at Abu Road have contributed well towards the upkeep of the Union Hall, the centre of our work t,here; and also to the general funds of the Society. Moreover, in spite of extra demands made, and generously responded to, in connection with various war funds and appeals, an extra effort has been made, quite Rpontaneously, to augment the monthly contributions.

"It is thus evident that the Union Hall is dear to the people of Abu Road. It is their own; was erected and paid for years ago by voluntary contributions entirely through the enterprise of former officers and men, and is still maintained on the same principle. Even as I write, friends are preparing for a concert, the proceeds of which are to pay for repairs to the organ, and some small repairs necessary to the hall itself "

14 A uglo-Indian Eva1!geli8ation Society.

Mr JOHN M'DOW ALL, Gangapur District, B.B. & C.I. Railway, writes :-" The district is a somewhat lengthy one, and sparsely populated, with the exception of Gangapur, where a fairly la.rge number of rail way people reside. Amongst these regular services ha.ve been maintained throughout the whole year, and every opportunity afforded for hearing the Word of Life. The blessing of God has reste.d on these gatherings, and often I have heard of the pleasure and profit afforded to those attending.

"In addition to the Sunday Services, my wife has maintained a splendid work among the women. In a station such as this where there is no institute, and little opportunity of social intercourse, these meetings have accomplished a very great deal in bringing the people together, with the chief end in view of influencing them for Christ.

"The Sunday School work has continued without a break, with all the available children attending. We suffer in numbers at outstations owing to the elder children being sent to boarding schools to continue their education. The gifts of the Ladies' Union, through Mrs. Adolphus Orr, to those attending were highly appreciated, and the Bibles in some instances went to homes where, through indifference Clr neglect, no copy had hitherto existed.

"Besides the services at the various stations up and down the district, we have maintained the work of visitation. The importance of this is manifest when we remember the idea which prevails in some quarters, tha.t to attend a service is to make a profession of a more or less pronounced Christian life. The reaching of all s11ch can only be accomplished in this way, since, in their estimation, some prior decision to be Christ's should precede their attendance at the united gathering. By this means much good seed has been sown."

Rev. JAMES SHAW, Quetta, Baluchistan, N.W. Railway, writes :-" The visitation of puints on this district at which Europeans are stationed has been carried on during the year; and my thanks are due to the railway management for the kindness and courtesy I have continued to receive in the supply of passes over the Bolan and ScindPishin sections. 'The conditions now obt.aining are, however, and have been, much less favourable for the work of an Evangelist working under the rules of the A.I.E.S. than formerh'. The number of Protestant ministers available for regular visitatio~ has ver)' much increased. It is the recognised policy of the Society, and the duty of the Evangelist, to give way where the services of ministers of religion are regularly supplied, and to seek rather such as are without religious privileges.

"The year has seen the closing to the Evangelist of the most important sphere of work amon~ the railway community of the district, by the settlement of a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Ohurch at Quetta. I had· carried on undenominational evangelistic work among the railway community at Quettafor ovei· a, quarter of a cen tury ; but about the middle of 1913 the Methodist Conference sent a miss·ionary to Quetta for native work. This minister Jives quite-

Anglo-Indian Evangelisation Society_ 15

-close to the railway colony, and regular religious and social work is now carried on under the auspices of the Methodist Episoqpal ChurcH.

"Turning now to the cantonments, very many opportunities occur .among soldiers for direct evangelistic work of an undenominational character to a worker who is willing, or not too busy otherwise, to buy them up. In a large garrison there is always a large percentage of thoughtless and worldly men, and efforts to reach such, provided no attempt to proselytise is made, have the sympathy of ministers of all Protestant Denominations. Services which,· however desirable, .are compulsory, are much disliked by the men. Much work of this description has been carried on by me, often with direct results; a number of men during the year having experienced a real change Qf heart, while a much larger number have been quickened in their ;spiritual life. Among many little expressions of the appreciation by the men of these evangelistic efforts on their behalf, I may mention the following :-It had got to be known by some of them that my birthday was drawing near, and one night a.fter I had conducted a Gospel meeting a representative of the men addressed to me some kindly words, and on behalf of the rest begged my acceptance of a. closed envelope, with the request that I would purchase something useful as a birthday present, or otherwise use it as I pleased. I had ()n another occasion been presented by the men with a han<;lsome inkstand, which is a sufficient memorial of them, now all gone to the war, so I shall best please myself by placing the contents of the ~nvelope to the credit of the Society'S funds. The amount was, I think, quite as handsome as it was surprising to me, the equivalent in Indian bank notes of five pounds sterling."

Rev. J. PARKER, Bellary District, M.S.M. Railway, writes :-" I have had much pleasure in visiting the stations on my d.istrict regularly every month, and in house to house visitation, which has enabled me to make many friends, who not only welcome me, but freely relate' their trials and difficulties as well as their joys to me, expecting and receiving the sympathy and advice I try, by God's grace, to impart.

"The services at the railway stations are attended mostly by the wives and childr.en of the railway employees; very few men are able to attend, as they are either on duty at the time, or resting. They are, however, visited in their homes, and Christia.n literature is distribu ted.

"Opportunities offer for religious conversations in the trains, which are appreciated more by English-speaking Indians, who are always glad to receive a booklet, or a religious paper, and sometimes offer to pay for them. I could use a great quantity of these if I could get them. _,

" Valuable opportunities are given to the workers of the A.I.E. Society to help in extending the interests of the Redeemer's Kingdom."

The. attendance. fluctuates, which must be expected in a Railway Station where so many ha.ve to be away on the line.

"Our Sabbath School continues .to flourish and keep up to its average strength. I have very great pleasure in recording the exceedingly unselfish spirit of the children in voluntarily giving up the eost of their annual prizes to the Imperial Indian Relief Fund, and, in addition, some of the scholars gave a concert and added the proceeds, Rs. 90/11, to the above Rs. 20/5, making a total of Rs. 111 sent .direct on their behalf to the Fund. The agent of ,.our railway also kindly gave his usual grant of Rs. 30 towards the purchase of prizes, and he sent this amount direct to the Fund in name .of the school.

"The Young People's Christian Union, the Young Men's and Young ~romen's Christian Association Meetings have been regularly held dpring the. year, .likewise the weekly Prayer Meeting, which has again proved a great source of strength and blessing. Rev. J. Parker has continued·his regular monthly visits, which have cheered us.

"I wish to acknowledge my devoted and able helper, Mr J. Wa.tson in all the work above mentioned, also the efforts of my dear wife as Hon. Treasurer of the socie.ty here."

Mr R. LISH GORDON, Podanur, M.S.M. Railway, writes:"I.n reviewing the year, we are able to report with thankfulnesss that Sunday and Midweek Services have been kept up. The attendance fluctuates very much, and has varied on Sunday Evenings from twelveto forty or more; one noticeable feature this year is that more young 'people have been attending the services. The friends at Coimbatore have gladly helped us, as usual.

"011- Wednesday evenings we have an informal Bible reading, and have been going through the Acts of the Apostles:

"We lost several children early 'in the year from our Sunday School, their parents having been transferred; but we have more than made up the loss by transfers to this Station. The number pn the roll at the end of 191.3 was 50; the number now is 70. The averageattendance for .the year: is 38'5. The lowest number 'present any Sunday was 23, and the highest 58. 'rheannual Sabbath School treat and prize-giving took place in March. The Bibles, so kindly. sent by the Ladies' Union in London, were reserved as prizes for' reglllar attendance. Two. of the children had not missed a single Sunday.

"We have been glad to welcome to Podanur Mrs Williams and her two daughters. Mrs Williams was for many years Lady Doctor in Cochin State. On retiring, last August, ,she came and settled in this Station (where another daughter has for years been a teacher in the· Railway School-the only Protestant teacher.) The Misses

Williams have taken classes in our Sunday School, and thus supplied a. real want. The tone and discipline of the Sunday School is much better 'now. They all also take an active interest in the Y.W.C.A. There are at present twenty-one members. The Library now contains over two hundred volumes. In October the Y.W.O.A., with the help of 'some friends, relldered the song-service 'Eva.,' in aid of the War }'und. It succeeded beyond our expectations, and they were able to send contributions both to the War Fund and the Belgium Relief Fund.

"We had our usual Christmas Morning Service, which was more largely attended than for several years. The Watch-Night Service also was crowded; motto'iexts were taken round while the last bymn was being sung, and everyone took a motto.

"Mrs Gordon and I have kept up our visiting during" the year. "The thing which has impressed us most during this year has

heen the confidence that many people have expressed in the power of prayer. We have had appeal after appeal for prayer-both public and private-for sick and afflicted ones. I think I may truthfully say that in every case prayer has been answered."

Rev. R. J. WARD, M.A., Coonoor and District, writes:"I have had opportunity during the year of working among the soldiers. Some of these have been definitely brought to Christ or brought back to Him during their sojourn at this Station. Among these there are some very fine Christians who have gone to the seat of war, and we are praying and believing that their testimony there may be the means of bringing othel's to the Lord. One of these, though only a young Christian, is a keen Bible student, and in recent examinations in connection with the' Back to the Bible' course in the 'Life of Faith' he obtained successively 97, 98, and 99 per cent. of marks.

"The Regulars having gone to the front, their place has been taken by Territorials from Somersetshire and Devonshire, and we have reason to believe that these men have been brought to India that they may 'Qe eternally saved."

INDIAN RAILWAY COMPANIES.

The Directors are again indebt.ed t~ the Indian Railway Companies for granting passes to the Society's agents on their respective districts. Such assistance is invaluable to our work, and without it this could not be maintained. The work done by the Society is appreciated, and many officials of the Railway Companies have testified to this. It would be a very great boon if a pass over all the Indian Railways could be granted to our Indian Secretary for purely Society work, which is so very largely for and among the railway communities.

WORK A THOME. J u,st at the tim~ when we were making plans for our winter's wor:k

the nation was plunged into the most awful war in history. ThiEl could not, but affect the work at home, as people could think of little else except the war. With the help of Mrs Giles, the wife of our Indian Secretary, we hoped to have a fine series Of meetings both in E,ngland and Scotland, but out of some 150 letters sent out asking for meetings scarcely one favourable reply came to hand. This can hardly be wondered at, and the marvel is that things have turned out even so well. The Secretaries, Treasurers, and Lady Collectors throughout the country have done nobly. In some places it seemed hopeless to try and collect, but in almost every case' the response exceeded expectations. In Grangemouth, one of the places which has suffered most severely owing to the war, it was thought it ~ould be impossible to collect the subscriptions, but our Lady CoHector met with quite a remarkable response, with the result that her long list was only a few shillings less than last year. This is ~ncouraging, and leads us to remember that the work is not ours but God's, and He is abundantly able to carry it on in spite of all the terrible trouble which has come upon the world at this time. But God certainly expects us to do our pa.rt, and if the work is to prosper all connected with the Society must ,do everything possible by prayer and effort to increase the income and seek to interest others in the work.

The workers in India have made strenuous efforts to increase the income there, and have done remarkably well, the total being only :.t

few pounds less than the previous yea.r. They realise in India the great need for this work and are doing all they can to support it, but they look, and rightly, to the friends at home to make up what is lacking.

The reduction in the income at home is due not so much to people refusing to contribute as to death of subscribers, of whom quite a large number have passed away. The Directors appeal to all who a.re interested in India, or who have commercial interests or friends there, to support the work. The income must be increased by nearly .£300 to meet the expenditure this year. This c,an be done if all the friends of the Society will do their part in interesting ot~ers. India has done nobly in sending of her best for the pr~tection of the Empire, and anything which we can do for India in return should be gladly done. In helping the work among our countrymen in India. we, are very directly helping to further the ca.use .0£ Christ in that land, and of hastening the time when India shall be won for Christ.

LEGACIES. It will be seen that our Legacy Fund, which has been such a help

to the work for many years past, is now exhausted. For J':Ieveral years no legacies have beeR received. What better or more needy work could money be left for than the spiritual care of our countrymen in India, which means so much to the advancement of the cause ()£ Christ there 1

Rev. and Mrs ARTHUR GILES .

. Mr Giles, who had saved up bis month's holiday for the past thl'ee years, according to the terms of his agreement, decided to come home, as he was run down and felt the need of a thorough change. He has been for a short time at home, and sails again with Mrs Giles on May the 8th. During' their visit to this country they have done much to strengthen the cause by visiting a number of places, and they have' also met with the Directors- in 'London and Edinburgh. As we go to press they have just finished an interesting series of meetings in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Crieff, and have also addressed the Annual Meeting in London. They haTe made many new friends, both personal and for the Society, and have impressed the hearts of all who have listened to their addresses. Mr and Mrs Giles have come ho,me and return to India at their own charges. They feel greatly benefited by their journey, and we feel sure the pray~rs of God's people will follow them in the work, trying and difficult as it is in many ways, and yet so very needy for the sake of "our boys" in that distant land.

Rev. and Mrs ARNOLD THOMAS.

It had been a..rranged that Mr and Mrs Thomas were to return to India in October, but, owing to the war and the state of the funds, the Directors decided to postpone their sailing for a time. This was a keen disappointment, but the time has not been lost. In the interval our friends have found ample scope for their energies in work among the troops at Swanage, under the Y.M.C.A. This work has been cheering and encouraging, though carried on under very trying circumstances, owipg to the exceptionally bad weather during the winter. Arrangements are now being made for Mr and Mrs Thomas to sail in September, and a special effort is being made both at home and in India to raise the salary, passage, and outfit, apart from the ordinary funds. Will friends please. remember this need in prayer 1 Mrs Thomas very kindly pays her own passage. .

The Bombay Committee have transferred Mr and Mrs John McDowall from Gangapur to Abu Road District, and another sphere of work will be found for Mr and Mrs Thomas.

THE NEED.

The need for more workers and for increased funds is very great. Ml' Giles has been pleading ~or two workers for planting districts, and· also for two more for the railways, one for Southern India and one for the Punjab. It is hoped that before long it may be possible to make some decided advance. Let us pray for this.

20 Anglo-Ind'ian Evangelisation Soc~et'!l.

THANKS. The Directors again desire to most cordially thank all those who

have assisted in the various branches of the work either at Home or in India-the Hon. Secretaries, Treasurers, and Lady Collectors j the Hon. Auditors, at Home and in India; the valuable auxiliary of the Society, the Anglo-India.n Ladies' Union, of which Mrs Adolphus Orr is Secretary, and the ma.ny other helpers.

PRAYER. The need of prayer for the work, in this year of turmoil and strife,

is realised more than ever. The workers in India feel this, and we earnestly urge a.ll who are interested in the welfare of our countrymen in India to remember the work, both at Home and Abroad, at the Throne of Grace. It is hoped that many who, perhaps, may not be able to do much otherwise, will become "helpers together by prayer," that the work may prosper; that the needed funds may be forthcoming; and that more workers may be raised up to go to needy districts.

OBITUARY.

MR E. G. GLAZIER, B.C.S.

The Directors record, with deep regret, the death of Mr E. G. Glazier, la.te of Bengal Oi viI Service, an old and valued friend and supporter of the Society. For many years, both while in India and at home, Mr Glazier took a keen and sympathetic interest in the work of the Society. During his residence in London he seldom failed ~o attend the committee meetings, where his counsel and advice were much esteemed, and 'he generously c~ntributed to the funds. The Directors extend to Mrs Glazier their very sincere sympathy in the loss which she has sustained.

THE EARL OF STAIR.

Early in the year the Earl of Stair .was appointed a Vice-President and Director of the Society, but before attending any of the meetings he' passed away. The Directors' extend to the family and relatives of the late Earl their deepest sympa~hy.

There has been much encouragement in one branch of the work, which is a matter for great thankfulness-and that is in connection with the distribution of Bibles, Testaments, and books by the workers in different parts of India, which some of the lady members have so generously helped in sending out this year. Letters have been received mentioning how much these books are valued by those to whom they are gLven, not only in schools as prizes at Christmas time, but by many dwellers in isolated parts of India, which are visited by the A.-I.E.S. workers. It is hoped the members will kindly Temember the " Sale of Work" to be held (J). V.) this year, and help to make it a great success by contributing more generously than eTer to it. All kinds of needle work and fancy articles will be most acceptable, and may be sent to Mrs ORR, 12 Pembridge Place, Bayswater, London, by the 15th June. India has done so much for Britain during this terrible war, by sending soldiers who have fought so bravely for us-let us show our gratitude by helping all who seek to make known Jesus Christ, whom to know is " Life Eternal."

A P PEN 0 I X.

The Forty-Fourth Annual Meeting of the Anglo-India. Evangelisation Society was heJd in the Central Y.M.e.A., london, on Friday, the 30th April 1915, tbe Rigbt Hon. Lord Reay, K.T., (j.C.S.I., «c., presiding.

Lord Reay was accompanied ii9 the platform by Sir Andrew Wingate, K.C.I.E., Sir Frederic Lely, K.C.I.E., Sir Daniel Hamilton, :Mr William Coldstream, I.C.S.,Colonel E. Swinton Skinner, Mr J. B. Braddon, Mr J. Morris, Rev. Arthur Giles, Indian Secretary, Rev. -and Mrs Arnold Thomas, two of the Society's workers from Rajputana, a~d Mr W Ste~art Thompson, General Secretary and Treasurer.

Sir Andrew: Wingate opened the Meeting with prayer.

The Secretary apologised .for the absence of the Earl of Ronaldshay, M.P., a new Director and Vice-President of the Society, who had just been called away on military duty; also for Sir Henry Procter and Mrs Giles, who were to have taken part in the meeting. He then presented for adoption the Forty-Fourth Annual Report of the Society, reading interesting extracts therefrom, and the Financial Statement. Matters had turned out better than they had dared to hope at the beginning of the war, but in spite of- all their effort, both at home and in India, they had closed the year with a deficit of over £100, and the accumulated deficit of the past three years amounted to nearly £500. This was a serious matter, and hampered the work very much, and he appealed to those present to help to put the work on a better financial footing.

Lord Reay, who said he would reserve his remarks till the close of . the meeting, then called upon Mr William Coldstream, I.e.S., who Dloved the first resolution :-:-H That the Report, extracts- from which

, had just -been read, be adopted as the For.ty-Eourth Annual Report of -. the Anglo-Indian Evangelisation Society, and that it be printed and. circulated, and that the Directors and Office-Bearers .be -reappointed

'with p0'Yer to add to thei ... J?umbers." Mr Co}dliltream said tllat the· Anglo-Indian Evangelisation Society had two strong claims on us, and·-

4nglo-,Tndian., Evanffelisation 'Society.

tl,lat thestatement.of these ePlbraced the statement of t:he nat~re and pv.rport of the SOclety's operations. The first was the ~~ll of the ~uropeari in India-of our fellow citizens there. They often lived lonely lives, under depressing conditions; were surrounded by antiChristian influences, and exposed to temptations of th~ most insidious and powerful kind. To these we sought to bring brotherly cheer and help, and the hopes and encouragement of the Christian faith. The pelter call was that of the natives of India. The European in Ipdia in his daily life and conduct bore witness for or against Christianity. How important was it that the standard of European faith and morality should be. pure and .high.; for by his life and conduct his faith, the faith of Jesus Christ, was necessarily judged by the natives around .him. It .was with the aim of strengthening the faith of our fellow citizens, encouraging them in their trials, and in their resistance to' temptations, that our agents went into the outlying and lonely pla.ces in India. He now submitted fQr the approval of the meeting the resolution.

Lord Reay seconded this, and on the resolution being put to the meeting it was cordially adopted.

The Chairman then called upon the Rev. Arthur Giles, the Indian , Secretary of the Society. Mr Giles, who was spending an accumulated leave of three months in a visit to this country at his own expense~ expressed the great pleasure it gave him to meet here in London, as he had already done during the la.st fortnight in Scotland, so many friends of the Society. Mr Giles then moved the following resolution :-" That as those of our countrymen iri India who are removed from the ordinary means of grace had a strong claim on the sympathy and help of the people at home, and as their number is constantly growing, the objects of this Society, which was founded to provide for the spiritual welfare of such persons, were deserving of a generous and increasing measure of support." In doing so he said that although prior to his appointment, four years ago, his knowledge of the Society was very limited, he could now claim an acquaintance with its working that was both intimate and comprehemdve. During that time he had nad charge of a district, had carried on the secretarial duties, and in ilodoing had not only visited each of the districts occupied by the Society's agent~, but had trayelled over other areas which, though extremely needy, were almost entirely neglected. The thin.g that had impressed him very deeply after thus getting to know the field was the great .and increasing need of work such as the ~ociety is doing. ,He emphasised this by stating that after making careful inquiry he had disc9vered that whilst there were about one hundred missionary a:p.d kindred Societies at work for the. conversion of the heathen, this wa~ the only Society whose sole and direct aim was the conversion and Spiritual welfare of our countrymen there. The speaker then desGrihed visits to and services at a lonely railway junction, an engineering camp, and an i~olated gold mine, at each of which was a small com-

munity of Europea~s whose opport, unities for religious services or Ohristian fellowship were extremely rare. .These instant-es, he said, 'Could be considerably multiplied, illustrating the value and. need of the Society's. work. Mr Giles concluded his address by an earnest :appeal for prayerful and sympathetic support of the work.' ThiS' appeal he' based on three important grounds. First there was t~e moral· and spiritual welf~re' of 'our own countrymen themselves; second there was the influence of. the British community in Indiai. helping or hindering missions to the heathen; and third, there was our own political prestige in 'that extremely important part of our -empire. He had much pleasure in moving the resolution.

Rev. Arnold Thomas, who hopes to return to India in the Autumn, in seconding the resolution, said that. in helping to exte;nd the work -of the Society in India we were orily}~oing our duty to. our country:·men there by seeing' that they were given the epiritual help necessary to enable them to live Christian lives, then they would influence the natives among whom theylived in the right direction, for it must be admitted that the behaviour of the European in India is closely watched and often copied. Another reason why our own people should not be neglected is that sooner or later most of them intend .to settle in this country, and if they bring back the deadening weight of indifference to spiritual things, then they will be a menace to the work of Ohrist at.home. He begged to second the resolution.

This was unanimously carried by the meeting.

Sir Daniel Hamilton, in moving. the third resolution, "That the cordial thanks of the Society are due to the Hon. Secretaries, Treasurers, and to the Lady Collectors, and also to Mrs Orr and the members of the Ladies' Union for their devoted labours during the year," said, we knew something of the arduous and difficult :work. of the Lady Collectors, which we all appreciate. They were also greatly indebted to Mrs Orr for her devoted work in connection with the Anglo-Indian Ladies' Union.

Mrs Arnold Thomas, who baa. been very seriously ill in India aJ,ld invalided ·home, but had made a remarkable recovery, said, hl seconding the resolution, :that when the war broke out she and her

'husband were looking, forward with pleasure to returning to their work in India, but the Directors thought it advisable that they should postpone their sailing for a time. They had, however, spent a. busy and ha.ppy winter with. the R.F.A. in Swanage, and were glad to have had .the opportunity of 'doing a little for our brave defenders. They had just learned with pleasure that it was the intention of the Oommittee to send them· out in the autumn, and she asked their prayers and sympathy that the way may be made clear, so that they might go forward in this much .needed work:

This motion was also carried.

Anglo-lndianEvangelisation Society-

Lord Reay, in proposing a vote of thanks to the speakers, alluded to the critical circumstances that absorbed all our thoughts: The heroism of the Indian troops, the loyalty of all classes in British India, the many tokens Indian Chiefs had given of their desire to :co-operate with .all His Majesty's subjects by their splendid gifts of motor cars and other war and Red Cross equipment, made us feel that India was avery vital part ·of the Empire. We had to do our duty to our fellow~subjects, especially those in the European community, who were scattered all over India, along the railways, in forests, and in mines. They did not belong to any parish, they had no regular servioe on Sundays. This Society, therefore, provided for an essential need. It was not only that our Agents preached sermons, they paid visits, organised Sunday schools, and distributed Bibles and otherChristian literature. They were welcome visitors to these isolated little colonies of Englishmen, Scotsmen and Irishmen. This was not a Missionary Society, but it was an auxiliary of Missionary Societies iIi so much as it upheld the Christian character of the British settlers, and all efforts of missionaries among the natives were vain if the practice of the Europeans was not in accordance with the Gospel the missionaries preached. This Society is interdenominational. We must not introduce in India the divisions which unhappily exist among ourselves, and which are due to historical causes. In India we can unfurl the Christian banner which can shelter all of us without abandoning whatever. may be our particular tenets of faith. After the war was over, his Lordship was convinced, that a great and glorious future was in store for India. Our responsibilities and our sympathy for the millions, whose welfare God had entrusted to us, will be increased. Our best wishes accompany Mr and Mrs Giles on their· return to the field of their activity. We trust that both here and in India we may succeed in obtaining more support for this Society, which, from its modest nature, does not appeal to the public as other Societies do. We pray for the coming of Christ's kingdom in our Empire.

Colonel E, Swinton Skinner proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman for the excellent way in which his Lordship had carried the proceedings through, and the meeting was brought to a close by the Benediction, which was pronounced by the Rev. Arthur Giles.
