INTRODUCTION

I am so encouraged you’ve chosen to take a deeper dive into God’s Word and to discover where your life fits in the unfolding of this epic drama. Far from being a rule book aimed at keeping you in line, or simply a trough of wisdom aimed at guiding you to the good life, the Bible is first and foremost the revealing of God — who He is and what He has done to redeem humanity and renew His creation.

Know that I will be praying for you daily that the Word will come alive and that your personal journey and our journey together as a church family will change us forever.

HOW TO USE YOUR JOURNAL

Welcome to your Jesus/The Church journal, the second of two journals that will guide you through This Is the Story. Our hope is that this intentional journey through select passages of Scripture will give you a sweeping sense of how the story of the Bible fits together. While it will require a little time each day and some perseverance, this reading plan is manageable and will prove fruitful. Obviously, there’s grace for missing a day. Just reengage the plan and move forward.

We’ve chosen 22 weekly topics that will walk you through the New Testament. Monday–Thursday you will read passages that relate to that week’s topic. On Friday, you will read a Psalm which will reveal aspects of God’s character and lead you to reflect on your life with Him. Employ each Psalm as a guide to growing your own prayer life.

In addition to daily readings, we’ve supplied two questions to spark personal reflections. Since God has designed us for a life of growing love — for Him and for others — we’ve tailored these daily questions toward these two themes. They will likely provide you with some material for which to pray. On Sunday morning we will gather together for worship, where the message will be drawn from that week’s passages. We’ve provided space in your journal for sermon notes, so bring your journal to church. Enjoy the journey!

This is the true story of the three-in-one God.

ORIGINSGod is love and has always existed. When He created the world, He created Adam and Eve to enjoy His love, to worship Him, and to bring the blessing of His reign to the world. But they rejected God and His mission. So, God rightly sent them away, and the whole world fell into sin and death.

But God was still unfolding His purposes.

ISRAELGod promised to bless the world through Abraham and Sara. When their descendants - Israel, became captives in Egypt, God graciously set them free through Moses. God gave them the Promised Land, where they could enjoy life with Him and become a blessing to the world. Sadly, like Adam, most of Israel rejected God and His mission. So, God rightly sent them away. And time passed. And God was silent.

But He was still unfolding His purposes.

JESUSHaving preserved a faithful few in Israel, God came into His world as a human — Jesus Christ. Jesus loved people and embraced God’s mission in the world. Though having done nothing wrong, Jesus gave Himself to be killed on a cross, where He absorbed all of humanity’s sin against God. Three days later, God raised Jesus from the dead, making Him King over all creation. King Jesus sent out His followers to fulfill God’s mission of blessing the world. People from every nation and tribe can enjoy God’s love and life with Him by receiving King Jesus.

THE CHURCHWhen you receive Jesus as King, God graciously forgives all your sins, and makes you part of His forever family — the Church. God gladly places His own Spirit within you, so you can live every day with Him and for Him — loving God, loving people, and helping others do the same. And God delights to give you hope; King Jesus will return, everything wrong will be set right, and God’s people will enjoy His loving presence in His new creation forever.

This is the true story of the three-in-one God —

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

And we find it in the Bible.
