Fears & Phobias

2 Timothy 1:7

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

3 Points to Remember

Fear is a spirit. The spirit of fear is not from God. God gives us power, love, and a sound mind to combat

this spirit.

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle,

And more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go,And you shall eat dust all the days of your life.15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,And between your seed and her Seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

16 To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;

In pain you shall bring forth children;Your desire shall be for your husband,And he shall rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

Genesis 3 (The Temptation and Fall of Man)

“Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of itall the days of your life.18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are,and to dust you shall return.”

3 Spiritual Alternatives

Spirit of Power Spirit of Love Spirit of a Sound Mind

Power

You are weak. You can’t do anything on your own. You’re helpless. You need help, but I’m not even sure that you CAN be

helped. You’re in way over your head. Don’t even bother asking for help because all you’ll do is

bring them down with you. I don’t even know why you got hired for this job.

Power (cont.)

You’re not qualified. You don’t have the experience to do this. You’re an embarrassment. And you call yourself a creation of the Most High? He’s probably ashamed of you right now. He’s probably ashamed of Himself because He created

such a weak, pathetic soul such as you.

Love

You’re unlovable. You have no idea what true love is. Your mom & dad didn’t know how to love you, and you’re just going

to keep passing that model down through the next generation. Your spouse and/or kids don’t really love you, they just tolerate

you. How can you expect someone to love you with all their heart when

your heart is focused on something/someone else? You don’t deserve to be loved.

Sound Mind

Are you crazy?!? You’re losing it. You can’t keep it together anymore. Things you used to have control over are now out-of-

control. You’re going crazy. What were you thinking when you made THAT choice?

Job’s response to his 1st Test (Job 1:21)

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

God confirms Job’s righteousness (Job 2:3)

Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.”

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 3:10-11)

10 Curse that day for failing to shut my mother’s womb,    for letting me be born to see all this trouble.

11 “Why wasn’t I born dead?    Why didn’t I die as I came from the womb?

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 6:9-10)

9 I wish he would crush me. I wish he would reach out his hand and kill me.10 At least I can take comfort in this: Despite the pain, I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 7:7-11)

7 O God, remember that my life is but a breath, and I will never again feel happiness.8 You see me now, but not for long. You will look for me, but I will be gone.9 Just as a cloud dissipates and vanishes, those who die will not come back.10 They are gone forever from their home, never to be seen again.

11 “I cannot keep from speaking. I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain.”

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 13:3, 22-24)

3 As for me, I would speak directly to the Almighty. I want to argue my case with God himself.

22 Now summon me, and I will answer! Or let me speak to you, and you reply.23 Tell me, what have I done wrong? Show me my rebellion and my sin.24 Why do you turn away from me? Why do you treat me as your enemy?

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 21:17-21)

17 “Yet the light of the wicked never seems to be extinguished. Do they ever have trouble? Does God distribute sorrows to them in anger?

18 Are they driven before the wind like straw? Are they carried away by the storm like chaff? Not at all!

19 “‘Well,’ you say, ‘at least God will punish their children!’ But I say he should punish the ones who sin, so that they understand his judgment.

20 Let them see their destruction with their own eyes. Let them drink deeply of the anger of the Almighty.

21 For they will not care what happens to their family after they are dead.

Job’s Response to his 2nd Test (Job 27:2)

1Job continued speaking: 2 “I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by

the Almighty who has embittered my soul— 3 As long as I live, while I have breath from God, 4 my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. 5 I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my

integrity until I die. 6 I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My

conscience is clear for as long as I live.

Power

Job’s power was in his status among the people. Everyone knew him, liked him, and respected him. The first thing he did was struck Job with boils all over his body. He speaks to that in Job 17:6-9

6 “God has made a mockery of me among the people; they spit in my face.7 My eyes are swollen with weeping, and I am but a shadow of my former self.8 The virtuous are horrified when they see me. The innocent rise up against the ungodly.9 The righteous keep moving forward, and those with clean hands become stronger and stronger.

Love

While Job was scraping the boils off of his skin, Satan went after his wife. She told Job to go curse God and die.

Sound Mind

After the attack on his wife, he went after his friends, who continually questioned the validity of Job’s righteousness. Eliphaz thought that Job was suffering because he sinned, Bildad thought he was suffering because he wouldn’t repent, and Zophar went as far to think that Job deserved even more suffering than he was already experiencing.
