Gila monster: a species of venomous lizard native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. It is a heavy, slow-moving lizard, up to 60 cm (2.0 ft)

long. … Though the Gila monster is venomous, its sluggish nature means it represents little threat to humans. However, it has earned

Task 2: Using complete sentences, describe either Ben or Madec. Use examples from the novel to support your opinion on their personality and their priorities. For each example, insert the page number it was found on in brackets after the example. For example: Madec seems to enjoy killing things because on the way out the desert, Madec shot at anything that moved, even a Gila monster that was peacefully laying in the shade.(10)

Chapter 15Task 6: Below is a list of events from Chapter 15. Carefully skim through the chapter and put the events in the correct order.

_1_ Ben & Madec arrive at Sheriff’s office. Ben walked into office leaving Madec in Jeep

_____Ben asks about Madec, and Strick responds “What do you care?” Strick explains he is mad at the things “people do to each other”

_____Ben strips down / doctor “helps” by yanking on the clothing stuck to him with his blood

_____Madec offers Ben $10 000 and threatens Ben with 10 years in jail if he refuses

_____Strick asks Ben why he tied Madec up then Strick tells Ben to untie Madec while Strick goes to get a car to take them to the medical centre

_____Ben tells Strick that he has “A dead man in the jeep” & the man who killed him

_____Ben unties Madec but still refuses the money. Madec threatens Ben “You thought I was tough in the desert…”

_____Ben and Souchek bring the old man (still wrapped up in the tarp) in a laundry basket, into the medical center

_____Deputy Strick was in (Ben was expecting to see Sergeant Hamilton)

_____Doctor begins exam, asking nurse to copy it down for the sheriff’s office. Doctor describes injuries – is acting cold and remote. Doctor recommends Ben be released to sheriff’s custody

_____Strick reads Ben his rights, Ben doesn’t understand and thinks he is here to report an accident. Ben refuses a lawyer and Strick asks for a signature indicating Ben understood and waived his rights. Ben signs waiver

_____Madec declares he needs a doctor and Strick sees dead body. Madec tells Strick that Ben tried to kill him

_____Ben and Souchek enter to find the doctor and nurse tending to Madec who is on the table

_____Nurse will not talk directly to Ben / Ben figures she must be tired. Doctor glares at Ben

_____Souchek asks Ben what happened to Ben. Ben answers “I slid”. Ben finds out Doc Myers is away and “the Boy Genius” (Saunders) is the doctor who is in

_____Ben sleeps until Madec is rolled out on a bed, and Strick calls Ben into a different room

_____Souchek opened the door and told Ben he was at the wrong door. Ben explained there was a dead man in the jeep and that Strick had told him to bring the body here

_____Strick and Ben walk out to the Jeep. Strick shines a flashlight then recognizes “Mr” Madec

_____Strick gently helps Madec into the car then Ben drove the jeep to the back of the medical center & rang the bell

_____Strick pushes Ben and Souchek out of the room and Ben sits. Tells Souchek that Madec had shot the old man and he (Ben) had shot Madec to keep Madec from shooting him (Ben)

_____Doctor sews up Ben’s feet, leaves, then nurse leaves. Strick comes in looking mad, telling Ben to come down to sheriff’s office for a statement. Ben just wants to sleep, but Strick gives him no choice

_22_Strick asks “Why did you shoot him so many times?” Ben answers “To keep him from shooting me” (meaning Madec) Strick still thinks Ben shot the old man and asks what Ben had against him Ben is still talking about Madec shooting at him – Ben tries to go home to sleep. Strick clarifies that Ben has been charged with Assault
