A Word from the BoardHi Everyone,

One last reply to the fantastic volunteer leaders of Outagamie County 4-H. We really need a vice-president for our 4-H Adult Leaders Association. This position helps our 4-H program, which helps so many of the 4-H members in our County.

I know you are busy just as I am, but there must be one of you 4-H volunteers that can make some time available to help our 4-H members. Thank you for taking the time to read this message and I hope to hear from you soon so your name can be put on the ballot.

Cordially,Robin KettnerVice-President of Leaders [email protected] 920-851-5116

2021 4-H Family Learning Day Workshop Proposals Due December 184-H Family Learning Day is an opportunity for youth, volunteers, and parents to learn a new skill and explore 4-H opportunities. As like most things this year, Family Learning Day will look a little different. We are asking our volunteers and youth leaders to be creative with their workshop ideas. Participants will receive any handouts, supplies, instructions and a link to their virtual workshop ahead of time.

Examples of workshop topics are fly fishing, robotics, basketry, photography. Workshops can be presented in a way where it’s a make-n-take, or a how-to, or bringing in a speaker on the topic and can be presented by individuals or teams of youth and/or adults.

Please help make this day a success by sharing your time, talent, and knowledge with others.

Don’t want to teach a full workshop? Have a poster or information to share about a project, activity or upcoming event? Request space in our “4-H Showcase Flyer”.

If you have questions or are interested in becoming a presenter please contact Alicia at 920-349-7377 or [email protected]. All submissions will be reviewed and will be notified when their workshop has been accepted.

2020/2021 4-H Music Festival Sadly, we will not be able to have the Music Festival as a face-to-face event with large groups as we normally would in December due to the current local health crisis. The Music Festival Committee is entertaining a few different options of trying a virtual event with more of a talent show feel as well as different dates. At this time the festival is being postponed with hopes of rescheduling soon. Alicia would love to hear from you via email with any ideas or suggestions as it would be very sad to see this event completely disappear.

Why do we have to do 4-H record books?

Records are a part of life. When 4-H’ers do a complete record book, they learn

Organizational skills To plan and make decisions To identify and set realistic goals To objectively evaluate and critique their own work To accept and apply constructive criticism To analyze and manage project finances

Record Books for 2021

The 2019-2020 4-H year was unique and unpredictable. Moving forward for 2020-2021, record book guidelines and awards will continue as they have in the past. Start thinking about writing those goals for what you want to learn and do in each of your projects. Here are some tips for completing or improving a record book:

Try to list at least 3 goals for each project. Be more specific when you tell what you learned and did in each project. Don’t forget to talk about the financial portion of your project. Adding photos will enhance your record book.

Record Book forms are available on the website at https://outagamie.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/member-resources/

If you have questions about 4-H record books or record book awards, please contact the Awards and Recognition Committee:

Rose Rynish – [email protected] – (920) 450-9653

Tammy Stille – [email protected] – (920) 997-0363

Thank you to all the members who completed a 4-H Record Book this year!!!

It starts with a project and ends with a record book.

friends, and my greatest lessons from

this organization. I will forever be

thankful for 4-H.”

“4-H has taught me many important life lessons.

The most important lesson that I have learned would

be that if you put your mind to something it can

happen. All you need to do is work hard and ask for help when you need it.”

Tony

“I am thankful for my years as a 4-H member. 4-H has given

me opportunities for leadership, travel, and service.

One of the highlights for me was the Citizenship

Washington Focus experience. I have also enjoyed the adult-youth partnerships in 4-H. I

am thankful for the many adult volunteers who help

make 4-H the great program that it is.” Katie

Bits & PiecesHappy 100th Birthday, Gale VandeBerg!Gale VandeBerg, a retired Extension staff person and a long-time and very ardent 4-H supporter is turning 100!! Gale was a 4-H member in Clark County, he studied at UW-Madison, and then taught high school for two years before taking an assistant county agent position in Outagamie County. This led him to working with 4-H youth. After completing his Masters and Ph.D., he became an Associate Professor at UW Madison. In 1960 he was appointed as the Assistant Director of Cooperative Extension. He served on the committee to plan the Extension merger in 1965. After the UW System merger in 1973, he became Assistant Chancellor and Director of Cooperative Extension. His national contributions were recognized with the Epsilon Sigma Phi Ruby Award in 1982. He was inducted into the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame in 2014. Gale established the Gale VandeBerg Endowment for 4-H Leadership Programs and is a regular donor to the 4-H Foundation. He was an avid gardener and raised champion fancy pigeons. He still plays a mean harmonica and plays his piano from memory as he can no longer read music due to his eyesight. Gale will celebrate his 100th birthday on November 24. After a tough summer, Gale is in relatively good health. His eyesight is very poor, but he has a magnifier that allows him to read a bit, and his son makes daily visits to help in his care. In appreciation for Gale, the WI 4-H Foundation is organizing a card shower. We know he will appreciate cards or notes very much as his mind and memory are very sharp - and he loves to hear from former colleagues and current 4-H staff, volunteers and members. Your card or note, whether you know him or not, will bring great joy to Gale. Please consider spreading some birthday cheer to a long time WI 4-H supporter!! Gale VandeBerg6205 Mineral Point RoadApartment 811Madison, Wisconsin 53705-4581 Or you can send us an email to the WI 4-H Foundation for Gale and they will print and share them with him. Signs, Signs, where are all the Signs?!Years back the Outreach committee designed and purchased 600 Join 4-H Signs. Traveling throughout the county we have noticed less than 50. If you have a Join 4-H sign, please proudly display it during the months of August, September and early October. If you no longer want to display your sign, please return them to the county 4-H office for others to display. If you know of past 4-H families that may have a sign, give them a call and ask them to display it or return to the Extension office. Thank you!

4-H Emblem Use Many clubs use the 4-H emblem to promote within our county. Promotions could include: making posters, banners, t-shirts for their club or signs. Before you send that document, t-shirt or sign to the printer, review the guidelines for proper use of the 4-H name and emblem.

They belong to the 4-H Youth Development program, under the authority of USDA and anyone wishing to use it must obtain permission. As a 4-H member or volunteer, you are permitted to use the emblem.

If you have a question about how you are using the emblem contact the Extension Office. You can download the 4-H brand guidelines under 4-H Professionals at www.4-h.org. For more information and to access the official emblem with the UW cobrand you can follow this link https://4h.extension.wisc.edu/resources/wisconsin-4-h-policies/4-h-name-and-emblem/.

Bits & PiecesDairy Bar Superintendents NEEDEDPlease consider joining the Dairy Bar team of Superintendents for the 2021 fair! Many of the current superintendents would love to enjoy the fair more by not working so many hours in the dairy bar! The more hands we have the less hours any of us have to work.

Reach out to Vicki Handschke in the office with questions about working in the dairy bar as a PAID superintendent. Thanks in advance for your willingness to join a team of dedicated workers who get the privilege to work with the many youth and adult volunteers!

Basketball Tournament Assistant Directors Needed!Rose Rynish is willing to once again train assistant directors to learn to run the scoreboard and record the books during the annual 4-H basketball tournament. If you’re interested or have questions, please contact Rose Rynish at 757-6824 or email: [email protected] as soon as possible. Thank You CornerClub and Group ChartersThank you to everyone who worked on your charter applications for the 2020-2021 4-H year! I appreciate everyone’s prompt and timely submissions. There is still some work that needs to be done on my side with getting them prepped for the state, but without your heavy lifting I would not be able to get that done. I hope that you found our charter informational meeting that we held in June helpful, I will plan to continue that every year for those of you that need a refresher. Thanks again for all your work! -Alicia

Thank you again to all who displayed the signs…4-H Pride!
