Dothan Business Hall Of Fame Announces 2018 Banquet and Induction Ceremony

The Dothan Business Hall of Fame is currently planning the eighth annual Banquet and Induction Ceremony. This year’s event will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, at Calvary Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m.

Initially a collaboration between the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dothan Area Young Professionals, the Dothan Business Hall of Fame was established in May 2011 to recognize the individuals who have made a significant impact in the development of this area. Individuals who have made such an impact by promoting the free enterprise system of entrepreneurship and spent a lifetime demonstrating civic leadership, philanthropy and humanitarianism toward their fellow citizens.

The Hall of Fame’s mission is to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of these outstanding business leaders, to perpetuate and inspire values of entrepreneurial spirit, personal integrity and community leadership in all generations. The mission is achieved by honoring past and present business leaders and by inspiring the leaders of the future.

Located at the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hall of Fame is in a prominent area of the Chamber so those honored may be seen by Chamber members, prospective members, industrial prospects, visitors and the general public.

In May and June of each year, the Hall of Fame’s Board of Advisors opens the nominations for laureates through the Chamber’s newsletter. The following four laureates will be honored this year:

Velma J. TribueVelma Tribue State Farm

C. Charles NailenBBG Specialty Foods Inc. – Taco Bell Corp.

Sam WainwrightWainwright Engineering

“We are once again planning an extraordinary evening to honor these wonderful individuals,” said Janice Shepard, event organizer and Chamber’s vice president of administration. “Without their dedication and commitment to the growth of this area, Dothan would not be where it is today.”

These individuals and their contributions remind us of the constant need for renewal and change and the opportunity for economic success. The inductees each year also serve as role models for our students, those persons just beginning their careers and for new entrepreneurs.

All are invited to attend this special event. Individual tickets for the event are $50 and corporate tables (seats eight) are also available at $750. To purchase tickets or a table, contact Janice Shepard at (334) 792-5138 or email. [email protected].

Two Great Publications,One Great Idea!

Are You Missing The Opportunity ToReach Thousands Of Potential Customers?

You want to reach new residents and the business community. They want to know how to find you. The best way to achieve both goals is to advertise in the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Dothan’s Official Welcome Guide and the 2019 Membership Directory & Business Guide.

The Dothan Area Chamber and Print Services Inc., the Chamber member awarded this project, have begun the ad sales campaign for these 2019

publications. Chamber members (primary contact and/or advertising agent) recently began receiving the Chamber’s project introduction letter, verification form(s) and a “Reserve Your Space” brochure.

Print Services will be contacting members about the advertising opportunities and has a media kit available online at www.psiprinter.com.

The Welcome Guide and Membership Directory & Business Guide will be mailed to Chamber members in late January 2019. High visibility through great distribution has been the key to the Welcome Guide’s success. Increased usage of the Membership Directory is a direct result of its convenience to find fellow business members to promote our business-to-business relationships. Don’t miss out on these important publications! Your company will benefit greatly by reaching all who look to the Dothan Area Chamber for information about Dothan businesses in 2019.

Distribution of the Welcome Guide (10,000) includes economic development prospects, new residents, prospective retirees and relocation families requesting information through the Chamber, 15 Chamber member apartment complexes for new residents, 15 Chamber member hotels/motels in-room distribution and the Dothan Utilities and Wiregrass Electric Cooperative offices to all new service customers. Great web exposure is another avenue of distribution for the 2019 Welcome Guide. The publication will be on the following websites: The City of Dothan, Houston County, Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and Print Services Inc.

Wesley Place on Honeysuckle was among nine facilities in Alabama to be awarded the 2018 Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award. The distinction is the first of three progressive award levels through the National Quality Award program, presented by the American Health Care Association, AHCA and National Center for Assisted Living. The program honors association members across the country that have demonstrated their dedication to improving quality of care for seniors and persons with disabilities.

“The real beneficiaries of this quality award are the people who make their home with us,” said Patrick Davies, Wesley Place on Honeysuckle executive director. “When you combine the achievement of this quality award with the recent adoption of the Household Model of care at Wesley Place, you get truly unequaled quality and service. Generations of families have called Wesley Place their home and continue to do so.”

Established in 1996, the National Quality Award program has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Providers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop an organizational profile with essential performance elements such as vision, mission statement, and key strengths and challenges. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement a performance improvement system.

The Award Program, established by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, is based on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which also serves as the foundation for the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative. The Baldrige framework helps organizations among different business sectors improve organizational effectiveness and achieve strategy-driven performance.

For more information, contact Holly Whitehead, marketing and admissions director, at (334) 790-7469 or [email protected]. Or for more information about the award program, visit www.ahcancal.org/quality_improvement/quality_award.

The Dothan Express Employment Professionals recently participated in the Brand It Blue initiative and raised over 10,000 pounds of food for the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. The Brand It Blue Initiative was born out of a desire to serve and partner with a variety of nonprofit organizations in more than 800 Express locations in the US, Canada and South Africa.

In mid-May, Dothan Express Employment placed food collection boxes with 17 businesses in and around Dothan. The boxes were then retrieved and all the food collected was given to the Wiregrass Food Bank. Several members of the Express staff volunteered on that morning of collection day to help sort and bag the donated items.

“I cannot say enough about the people that worked so hard to make this happen,” said Terry Stansell, Dothan Express franchise owner. “Brand It Blue is something in which we participate every year and we will continue to

participate and strive to do even more.” Expressing the Food Bank’s appreciation,

Executive Director David Hanks stated, “We are so very thankful to Terry and the staff at Express Employment for this wonderful donation, added “It will help us tremendously in our mission to serve needy families throughout the Wiregrass area.”

For more information, contact Stansell at (334) 671-1315 or visit www.expresspros.com.

The Dothan Area Young Professionals have started hosting a monthly “Meet-n-Mingle at area restaurants. The next scheduled Meet-n-Mingles will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at The Cellar and Sept. 26, at Barberitos - A Southwestern Grille and Cantina. All current DAYP members and future DAYP members are invited to attend.

“We feel it’s important that we get together and network while also supporting our local chamber-member restaurants,” said Michelle Enfinger, DAYP chair. “If you haven’t been able to attend any of the DAYP’s after-hours networking events, this could be a fantastic way to start meeting up with people who you do business with, want to do business with or share the same interests.”

What to know before you go ... bring a friend or co-worker, don’t be shy, just come relax and enjoy. And if this is your first DAYP event, remember everyone is there to “Meet-n-Mingle.” So look for a person with a green name tag, which are worn by DAYP board members and Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce staff, grab one of them and they will have introductions.

Attending an event where you may not know anyone can be intimidating, but if there is one thing you should know is that you are not alone. If you’re thinking of attending a Meet-n-Mingle and have not done any networking before, here are a couple tips to help you make the most of it:

Invite a friend to sit with you. DAYP is always looking for new members. Plus, you never know what business connections you can make over a meal; and

Everyone is there to network and meet new people, so don’t feel awkward about walking up and talking to new people; and

DAYP was created to enrich our community by uniting and developing young professionals (ages 21-41). For more information on how to get involved with the group, visit www.dothanyp.com or email [email protected].

A report by Jaison Abel and Richard Dietz of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York provides some interesting data about occupations filled by college graduates. Using 2010 data, they found that 62 percent of college graduates held a job that required a college degree and that only 27 percent held jobs that were closely related to their major.

The probability that a college graduate was working in an occupation related to their field

of study rose commensurate with the size of the metropolitan area. The probability of this occurrence was found to be 6 percent greater in the larger metropolitan areas than in the smaller. This circumstance of more people working within their field of study tends to raise productivity.

Several years ago, I gathered data on all of the metropolitan statistical areas in Alabama and found that there is a point, above which, per capita GDP contribution exceeds per capita income, and below which, per capita income exceeds per capita GDP contribution. That point was approximately 100,000 workers. This is the economic advantage of agglomeration.

In 2007, within the U.S., a full 30 percent of Americans inhabited 16 large metropolitan areas. Authors and researchers Pierre-Philippe Combes, Gilles Duranton, Laurent Gobillon and Sébastian Roux are currently working to determine if productivity increases density or density increases productivity.

It is obvious that the Huntsville MSA has a totally different employment profile than the other metropolitan statistical areas in the state caused by the high number of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs, most of which require a college degree. And while Madison County, the core of the MSA, has many more jobs than Dale County, because of Fort Rucker, Dale County actually has the highest wage per job ($56,806) of any other county in the state. Washington County (chemical and metal manufacturing) is a close second at $56,614, with Madison County third at $56,050/job in 2016.

As can be seen on the following graph, Huntsville has more in common with Silicon Valley than it does with the rest of Alabama.

The driving force that created Silicon Valley was Stanford University, which aggressively supported technological innovation by partnering with business and industry. The impetus for Huntsville was the space race. In FY 2017, of the $10,432,271,036 in federal contracts that came to Alabama, 73 percent of the funding went to Madison County. That is $21,296 of federal contracts per capita flowing into Madison County in 2017. I point out these facts because I sometimes hear that we should work towards recruiting high tech industries like Huntsville. We have our own strengths, but we do not have a high density of STEM workers.
