WHAT IS GLAUCOMA ?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases causing optic nerve damage. The optic nerve carries

images from the retina, which is the specialized light sensing tissue, to the brain

so we can see.

Early detection and treatment by your ophthalmologist are the keys to preventing optic nerve damage and vision loss from

glaucoma.

Primary open-angle glaucoma signs and symptoms include: 1.Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes

2. Tunnel vision in the advanced stages

Acute angle-closure glaucoma signs and symptoms include:

1. Eye pain2. Nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain)

3. Sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light

4. Blurred vision

5. Halos around lights

6. Reddening of the eye

If you have glaucoma, it can take a long time before you realise you have a problem with your eyesight. This is because glaucoma usually damages the outer edge of the eye and works slowly inwards. You may not notice a problem until the glaucoma is near the centre of your eye.You should have an eye test at least every two years, there are:1.Eye pressure test (tonometry)2.Central corneal thickness3.Gonioscopy4.Visual field test5.Optic nerve assessment

Eye Dropsalmost all eye drops may cause an uncomfortable burning or stinging sensation at first, the discomfort should last for only a few seconds. After administering the drops close your eye for one to two minutes press your index finger lightly against the inferior nasal corner of your eyelid to close the tear duct which drains into the nose.

Pillswhen eye drops don't sufficiently control IOP, pills may be prescribed in addition to drops. These pills, which have more systemic side effects than drops, also serve to turn down the eye's faucet and lessen the production of fluid. These medications are usually taken from two to four times daily.

Surgical ProceduresWhen medications do not achieve the desired results, or have intolerable side effects, your ophthalmologist may suggest surgery.

Laser SurgeryLaser surgery has become increasingly popular as an intermediate step, but the success rates are variable. This procedure takes between 10 and 15 minutes, is painless, and can be performed in either a doctor's office or an outpatient facility.

CAUSE OF GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is caused by a blockage in part of the eye. This prevents fluid draining out of the eye and increases pressure in the eye, called intraocular pressure.

What can increase the risk of Glaucoma?

• age (glaucoma becomes more likely as you get

older) – in the UK, chronic open-angle glaucoma affects up to two in every 100 people over 40 years old and around five in every 100 people over 80 years old

• ethnic origin – people of African or Afro-Caribbean origin are at increased risk of developing chronic open-angle glaucoma and people of Asian origin are at increased risk of developing acute angle-closure glaucoma

• short sightedness (myopia) – people who are short-sighted are more likely to develop chronic open-angle glaucoma

ocular hypertension (OHT – raised pressure in the eye) – your optometrist will be able to diagnose OHT (see diagnosing glaucoma), which increases your risk of developing chronic open-angle glaucoma family history – if you have a close relative, such as a parent, brother or sister who has glaucoma, you are at increased risk of developing the condition yourself medical history – people with diabetes may be at increased risk of developing glaucoma
