2. August 29, 2021 REFLECTION (951) 924-1968

Dear Holy People of God:

Our gospel today tells us this miracle story; it says:

Jesus put his finger into the man’s ears… touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven… and said to him, “EPHPHATHA!” that is, “BE OPENED!” And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed…

There are two miracles that evolved from this healing story; they are:

First: the miracle TO HEAR. Jesus empowered the man to listen, not only to hear the words of others, but to hear the voice of God, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him”; he became attentive to the voice of the psalmist: “When you hear God’s word, harden not your hearts”. And the man listened to the mandate of love, it says: “Love one another as I have loved you”.

When the man opened his two ears, he began to understand why words are spoken. Listening is the beginning of understanding.

Second: the miracle TO SPEAK. The man cannot only produce words to communicate with others, but Jesus empowered the man, to produce a language that everyone is longing for: the language of love! And love is what the world needs now. A reconciling love that encircles the globe and heals every human heart.

When we say, “I love you”, we allow others to experience care, affection, and that they are appreciated. This is life at its best. Speak the truth, and the truth will set you free. And remember, love is a ministry that never ends.

From this healing story, remember the genius of human anatomy, it says wisely: “we have two ears and one tongue; so, we would listen more and talk less”. Listening is about presence and not about being quiet. Speaking is not just making noise but speaking words of wisdom and with power.

Blessings, Fr. Romy, MS

Bendiciones, Fr. Romy, MS

WEEKLY READINGS 3.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 5, 2021 Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom? — James 2:5

GIVE GLORY TO GOD On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we proba-bly would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Say to those whose hearts are fright-ened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5). Gospel — Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
